Search for MeV electron recoils from dark matter in EXO-200

We present a search for electron-recoil signatures from the charged-current absorption of fermionic dark matter using the EXO-200 detector. We report an average electron-recoil background rate of 6.8×10 4 ⁢cts ⁢kg −1 yr −1 keV −1 above 4 MeV and find no statistically significant excess over our background projection. Using a total 136 Xe exposure of 234.1 kg yr, we exclude new parameter space for the charged-current absorption cross section for dark matter masses between 𝑚𝜒=2.6–11.6 MeV with a minimum of 6×10 −51 cm 2 at 8.3 MeV at the 90% confidence level.

Basis light-front quantization for the Λ b and Σ b baryons

Within the basis light-front quantization framework, we compute the masses and light-front wave functions of the Λ b baryon and its isospin triplet counterparts Σ b + , Σ b 0 , and Σ b − using a light-front effective Hamiltonian in the leading Fock sector. These wave functions are obtained as eigenstates of the effective Hamiltonian, which incorporates the one-gluon exchange interaction with fixed coupling and a three-dimensional confinement potential. With the quark masses and the couplings as adjustable parameters, the computed masses are set within the experimental range. The resulting predictions for their electromagnetic properties align well with other theoretical calculations. Additionally, the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of these baryons are obtained for the first time, with gluon and sea quark distributions dynamically generated through QCD evolution of the valence quark PDFs. Observation of High-Frequency Transverse Phonons in Metallic Glasses

Here, using inelastic neutron scattering and molecular dynamics simulations on a model Zr-Cu-Al metallic glass, we show that transverse phonons persist well into the high-frequency regime, and can be detected at large momentum transfer. Furthermore, the apparent peak width of the transverse phonons was found to follow the static structure factor. The one-to-one correspondence, which was demonstrated for both Zr-Cu-Al metallic glass and a three-dimensional Lennard-Jones model glass, suggests a universal correlation between the phonon dynamics and the underlying disordered structure. This remarkable correlation, not found for longitudinal phonons, underscores the key role that transverse phonons hold for understanding the structure-dynamics relationship in disordered materials.

Measurement of the Spectral Shape of the $β$-Decay of 137 Xe to the Ground State of 137 Cs in EXO-200 and Comparison with Theory

Herein we report on a comparison between the theoretically predicted and experimentally measured spectra of the first-forbidden nonunique $β$-decay transition 137 Xe ( 7/2 - ) → 137 Cs ( 7/2 + ) . The experimental data were acquired by the EXO-200 experiment during a deployment of an AmBe neutron source. The ultralow background environment of EXO-200, together with dedicated source deployment and analysis procedures, allowed for collection of a pure sample of the decays, with an estimated signal to background ratio of more than 99 to 1 in the energy range from 1075 to 4175 keV. In addition to providing a rare and accurate measurement of the first-forbidden nonunique $β$-decay shape, this work constitutes a novel test of the calculated electron spectral shapes in the context of the reactor antineutrino anomaly and spectral bump.

Solid-Density Ion Temperature from Redshifted and Double-Peaked Stark Line Shapes

Heβ spectral line shapes are important for diagnosing temperature and density in many dense plasmas. This work presents Heβ line shapes measured with high spectral resolution from solid-density plasmas with minimized gradients. The line shapes show hallmark features of Stark broadening, including quantifiable redshifts and double-peaked structure with a significant dip between the peaks; these features are compared to models through a Markov chain Monte Carlo framework. Line shape theory using the dipole approximation can fit the width and peak separation of measured line shapes, but it cannot resolve an ambiguity between electron density n e and ion temperature T i , since both parameters influence the strength of quasistatic ion microfields. Here a line shape model employing a full Coulomb interaction for the electron broadening computes self-consistent line widths and redshifts through the monopole term; redshifts have different dependence on plasma parameters and thus resolve the n e – T i ambiguity. The measured line shapes indicate densities that are 80–100% of solid, identifying a regime of highly ionized but well-tamped plasma. This analysis also provides the first strong evidence that dense ions and electrons are not in thermal equilibrium, despite equilibration times much shorter than the duration of x-ray emission; cooler ions may arise from nonclassical thermalization rates or anomalous energy transport. Furthermore, the experimental platform and diagnostic technique constitute a promising new approach for studying ion-electron equilibration in dense plasmas.

Hot Spot Evolution Measured by High-Resolution X-Ray Spectroscopy at the National Ignition Facility

Evolution of the hot spot plasma conditions was measured using high-resolution x-ray spectroscopy at the National Ignition Facility. The capsules were filled with DD gas with trace levels of Kr and had either a high-density-carbon (HDC) ablator or a tungsten (W)-doped HDC ablator. Time-resolved measurement of the Kr He β spectra, absolutely calibrated by a simultaneous time-integrated measurement, allows inference of the electron density and temperature through observing Stark broadening and the relative intensities of dielectronic satellites. By matching the calculated hot spot emission using a collisional-radiative code to experimental observations, the hot spot size and areal density are determined. Here these advanced spectroscopy techniques further reveal the effect of W dopant in the ablator on the hot spot parameters for their improved implosion performance.

Ablating Ion Velocity Distributions in Short-Pulse-Heated Solids via X-Ray Doppler Shifts

Solids ablate under laser irradiation, but experiments have not previously characterized the initiation of this process at ultrarelativistic laser intensities. Here, we present first measurements of bulk ion velocity distributions as ablation begins, captured as a function of depth via Doppler-shifted x-ray line emission from two viewing angles. Bayesian analysis indicates that bulk ions are either nearly stationary or flowing outward at the plasma sound speed. The measurements quantitatively constrain the laser-plasma ablation mechanism, suggesting that a steplike electrostatic potential structure drives solid disassembly.

Search for Double Beta Decays of Xe134 with EXO-200 Phase II

EXO-200 was a leading double beta decay experiment consisting of a single-phase, enriched liquid xenon time projection chamber filled with an admixture of 80.672% ^{136}Xe and 19.098% ^{134}Xe. The detector operated at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant between 2010 and 2018 and was designed to search for double beta decay of ^{136}Xe. Data were acquired in two phases separated by a period of detector upgrades. We report on the search for 0νββ and 2νββ decay of ^{134}Xe with Phase II EXO-200 data, with median 90% CL exclusion sensitivity to half-life T_{1/2}^{0ν}≥3.7×10^{23} yr and T_{1/2}^{2ν}≥2.6×10^{21} yr, respectively. No statistically significant signal is observed for either decay mode. We set a world-leading lower limit on the half-life of the neutrinoless decay mode of ^{134}Xe of T_{1/2}^{0ν}≥8.7×10^{23} (90% CL) and the second strongest constraint on the two-neutrino decay of T_{1/2}^{2ν}≥2.9×10^{21} (90% CL), a threefold improvement over the EXO-200 Phase I measurement. New constraints are also set for the 2νββ and 0νββ decays of ^{134}Xe to the lowest excited state of ^{134}Ba.

Plasma flow generation and particle acceleration from expanding magnetic bubbles

Impulsive plasma dynamics in the laboratory are often driven by rising electric currents, yet their quantitative plasma response has not been well established. By means of fully kinetic particle-in-cell simulations and laser-driven capacitor-coil experiments, we show that a rising current expels plasma, forming an expanding magnetic bubble and accelerating particles. The expansion front velocity scales with the Alfvén speed determined by the magnetic field at its inner edge and the plasma density at its outer edge. This mechanism establishes impulsive current drive as a fundamental way that generates plasma flows and accelerates particles in laboratory plasmas, with potential relevance to astrophysics.

Towards a machine-readable literature: finding relevant papers based on an uploaded powder diffraction pattern

A prototype application for machine-readable literature is investigated. The program is called pyDataRecognition and serves as an example of a data-driven literature search, where the literature search query is an experimental data set provided by the user. The user uploads a powder pattern together with the radiation wavelength. The program compares the user data to a database of existing powder patterns associated with published papers and produces a rank ordered according to their similarity score. The program returns the digital object identifier and full reference of top-ranked papers together with a stack plot of the user data alongside the top-five database entries. The paper describes the approach and explores successes and challenges.

Union: An Automatic Workload Manager for Accelerating Network Simulation

With the rapid growth of the machine learning applications, the workloads of future HPC systems are anticipated to be a mix of scientific simulation, big data analytics, and machine learning applications. Simulation is a great research vehicle to understand the performance implications of co-running scientific applications with big data and machine learning workloads on large-scale systems. In this paper, we present Union, a workload manager that provides an automatic framework to facilitate hybrid workload simulation in CODES. Furthermore, we use Union, along with CODES, to investigate various hybrid workloads composed of traditional simulation applications and emerging learning applications on two dragonfly systems. The experiment results show that both message latency and communication time are important performance metrics to evaluate network interference. Network interference on HPC applications is more reflected by the message latency variation, whereas ML application performance depends more on the communication time.

A Digital Twin Approach to Study Additive Manufacturing Processing Using Embedded Optical Fiber Sensors and Numerical Modeling

One of the major challenges for metal-powder-based additive manufacturing is measuring and mitigating residual strain induced during the manufacturing processes. This article reports distributed fiber optic sensors embedded in Inconel alloy components as experimental means to validate numerical models of additive manufacturing process. Electroplating was used to deposit a metal protective jacket onto standard telecom single-mode fibers for strain measurements, Fiber sensors were embedded in an Inconel alloy substrate using the laser engineered net shaping (LENS) process. Here by using a Rayleigh-scattering optical frequency domain reflectometer (OFDR), temperature changes, and residual strain in the metal substrate were monitored with 5 mm spatial resolution during the LENS process. Using finite element analysis, temperature and strain profiles induced by the LENS deposition processes were also numerically studied. Discrepancies between the simulated temperature and strain profiles and those measured directly were less than 10%. Results presented in this article demonstrates a digital twin approach to fuse modeling results with distributed fiber sensor measurement data to study additive manufacturing process toward design and fabrication process optimization.

Reflectance of Silicon Photomultipliers at Vacuum Ultraviolet Wavelengths

Characterization of the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) reflectance of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) is important for large-scale SiPM-based photodetector systems. In this work, we report the angular dependence of the specular reflectance in vacuum of SiPMs manufactured by Fondazionc Bruno Kessler (FBK) and Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. (HPK) over wavelengths ranging from 120 to 280 nm. Refractive index and extinction coefficient of the thin silicon-dioxide film deposited on the surface of the FBK SiPMs are derived from reflectance data of an FBK silicon wafer with the same deposited oxide film as SiPMs. The diffuse reflectance of SiPMs is also measured at 193 nm. We use the VUV spectral dependence of the optical constants to predict the reflectance of the FBK silicon wafer and FBK SiPMs in liquid xenon.
