Fast cycling HTS based superconducting accelerator magnets: Feasibility study and readiness demonstration program driven by neutrino physics and muon collider needs

Development of energy-efficient fast cycling accelerator magnets is critical for the next generation of proton rapid cycling synchrotrons (RCS) for neutrino research and booster accelerators of future muon colliders. We see a unique opportunity for having such magnets to be built on base of High Temperature Superconductors (HTS). Besides being superconducting at relatively high temperatures, rare-earth HTS tapes have shown very small AC losses compared to low-temperature NbTi superconductor cables. Recent tests of the HTS-based 0.5 m long two-bore superconducting accelerator magnet have shown record high dB/dt ramping rates of about 300 T/s at 10 Hz repetition rate and 0.5 T B-field span. No temperature rise in 6 K cooling He was observed within the 0.003 K error setting the upper limit on the cryogenic power loss in the magnet conductor coil to be less than 0.2 W/m. Based on this result we outline a possible upgrade of this test magnet design to 2 T B-field in the 10 mm beam gap with the dB/dt ramping rates up to 1000 T/s. The power test results of this short sample magnet will be used to project both cryogenic and electrical power losses as a function of the magnet B-field and the dB/dt ramping rates. Then these projections will be scaled to the range of expected accelerator magnet beam gaps and B-fields for the proton and muon RCS accelerators. We invite collaborators to join these studies and call for support of the R&D program aimed at comprehensive demonstration of this approach that includes design, construction, and power tests of a long prototype of the HTS-based fast-cycling accelerator magnet by 2028.

Friction Stir Welding – an Advanced Approach to Repair Nuclear Power Plant Components

Solid phase joining technique friction stir welding (FSW) has been shown to mitigate helium-related issues in fusion welding of irradiated steels. Here, we present detailed characterization results of the first friction stir weld of an irradiated 304L stainless steel (SS) coupon contained 5.2 atomic parts per million (appm) helium. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to characterize a cross section specimen removed from the friction stir weld. No macro helium induced crack was observed at the analyzed cross-section, and only 1 – 1.5 µm size pores were found in the stir zone (SZ) and the thermal-mechanical affected zone (TMAZ). Moreover, some minor helium aggregations (Maximum ~20 µm in length) appeared along grain boundaries inside the TMAZ. Thereafter, miniature tensile specimens were extracted from the SZ, TMAZ and heat affected zone (HAZ), and base metal (BM) and tested. All welded specimens showed high total elongations (> 60%) and strengths (> 75% BM strengths). Overall, the weld made by FSW showed much better results comparing with traditional fusion welding on irradiated SS.

Selective high-affinity polydentate ligands and methods of making such

This invention provides novel polydentate selective high affinity ligands (SHALs) that can be used in a variety of applications in a manner analogous to the use of antibodies. SHALs typically comprise a multiplicity of ligands that each bind different region son the target molecule. The ligands are joined directly or through a linker thereby forming a polydentate moiety that typically binds the target molecule with high selectivity and avidity.

Changes in Hydropower Resource Operations Following Participation in the CAISO Energy Imbalance Market - A Case Study

Portland General Electric (PGE), an investor-owned electric utility serving nearly 900,000 customers in 51 Oregon cities, joined Western Energy Imbalance Market (EIM) – a California Independent System Operator (CAISO) platform for sharing cleaner and more efficient generation resources among multiple states in the Western U.S. While participation in EIM brings a new set of economic opportunities for PGE by capturing flexibility needs in the market, it also changes operational patterns (e.g., more frequent start/stop, off-nominal power output, and ramping) of PGE’s conventional generation fleet, including hydropower units. With 492 MW of hydropower capacity, which constitutes 15\% of PGE’s generation mix, it is important for PGE (as any other EIM-participant utility) to understand how participation in EIM impacts its hydropower assets, and how a techno-economically sustainable operation of those assets could be accomplished. In this paper, a case study is performed with PGE's hydropower generation facilities to assess and quantify EIM-participation driven changes in hydropower operational patterns.

Deep Inelastic Lepton-Nucleus Scattering

I have worked at MINERvA for almost four years and I am involved in theanalysis of antineutrino interactions with the nuclear targets in the DIS region. Iam one of the first Ph.D. students to use higher statistics antineutrino data obtainedby the MINERvA detector. Before joining MINERvA, I have also workedat my home institution(Aligarh Muslim University, India) for almost three yearson the theoretical understanding of neutrino-nucleon and neutrino-nucleus scatteringcross sections. These studies were more confined to quasielastic scatteringprocesses. Therefore, my work is divided into two parts. First I will introduce thework which I am performing during my stay at the Fermilab and will be discussedin Chapters 2-6 and then I will introduce the theoretical work, which will bediscussed in Chapters 7-10. Finally I will conclude my findings in Chapter 11.

Review of HAYNES® 282® alloy for supercritical CO2 structural applications

In this paper, HAYNES® 282® alloy (282® alloy) properties, microstructure, high temperature oxidation resistance, weldability, and American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) code case highlights are reviewed. The long term performance of high temperature, high strength, creep resistant alloys is critical to the success of supercritical carbon dioxide equipment. Several modern power generation technologies require alloys that can operate continuously at or above 700oC. 282® alloy is a precipitation strengthened nickel based super alloy that meets these requirements. The results of 282® alloy research reviewed in this paper include longterm cyclic oxidation behavior in air and sCO2, independent research and validation of 100k hour creep life, and successful welding of the alloy in the age hardened condition. The latter is critical for joining of hardened components (flanges, piping, heat exchanger internal, etc.) and field repair. Several highlights from the code case for this ASMEapproved material are also presented.

Reagent to label proteins via lysine isopeptide bonds

Covalently cross-linked pilus polymers displayed on the cell surface of Gram-positive bacteria are assembled by class C sortase enzymes. These pilus-specific transpeptidases located on the bacterial membrane catalyze a two-step protein ligation reaction—first, cleaving the LPXTG motif of one pilin protomer to form an acyl-enzyme intermediate, and second, joining the terminal threonine to the nucleophilic lysine residue residing within the pilin motif of another pilin protomer. Informed by the high-resolution crystal structures of corynebacterial pilus-specific sortase (SrtA) and by developing structural variants of the sortase enzyme whose catalytic pocket has been unmasked by activating mutations, we have developed new reagents capable of forming isopeptide bonds in vitro. The reagents disclosed herein can catalyze ligation of isolated SpaA domains in vitro provide a facile and versatile new platform for protein engineering and bio-conjugation that has major implications for biotechnology.
