Coordinated Optimal Control of PV Inverters and HVAC Loads in Distribution Systems

The increasing integration of distributed energy resources (DERs), such as photovoltaics (PVs) and smart buildings into distribution systems complicate power system operation and controls. This paper proposes a coordinated optimal control strategy for PV inverters and Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) loads in smart buildings to minimize the total network loss in a distribution system. For the HVAC units, we enforce minimum on and off time constraints to avoid frequent switching that can degrade the unit. The proposed control will dispatch optimal control signals of active and reactive power to PV inverters and on/off commands to HVAC units while maintaining the nodal voltage within a secure range and the temperature of HVAC units at a comfort level. The simulation results on a modified IEEE 33-node distribution system demonstrate that the proposed coordinated control scheme can reduce the network loss.

Dynamic Phasor Modeling of Three Phase Voltage Source Inverters

With the increase in the development and implementation of distributed energy resources, application of parallel connected inverters is increasing and as a result having accurate modeling and simulation tools that can help in the design, analysis and stability assessment of the grid is of great importance. Development of fundamental methods that can achieve accurate, reliable, and computationally efficient results can be very beneficial. Application of Dynamic phasor (DP) modeling method has been limited to study of limited harmonics and small combination of interconnected converters due to the complexity associated with developing models that describe larger systems. In this paper, application of DP modeling method is expanded to model any number of parallel connected three phase voltage source inverter (VSI) with inclusion of a wider harmonic content including fundamental, subharmonics, inter-harmonics, switching frequency and their sidebands. Results achieved from this modeling method is compared with conventional average model as well as detailed switching model and the effect of inclusion of wider harmonic content on accuracy of DP modeling method is demonstrated.

Device-Centric Ransomware Detection using Machine Learning-Based Memory Forensics for Smart Inverters

Ransomware attacks are the fastest-growing form of cyberattacks worldwide. Recently, ransomware attacks have targeted industrial control systems (ICSs), including power grids. Lessons learned from recent incidents in ICSs show that ransomware groups can deliver ransomware into not only the organization’s control servers, but also the operational technology (OT) devices such as smart inverters and smart grid devices. This paper proposes a machine learning (ML)- based memory forensics method enabling the detection of ransomware binaries stored in the memory of a commercial smart inverter. Device firmware binary files are extracted from a Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) flash memory, and samples of both benign and ransomware binaries are generated by a binary manipulation method and a real-world ransomware encryption, separately. A deep transfer learning (DTL) method is used to retrain a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based ransomware detection algorithm using the generated samples. The experimental result validates that the proposed ML-based memory forensics method can accurately detect ransomware files.

An Innovative Energy Management System for Microgrids with Multiple Grid-Forming Inverters

As increasingly more grid-forming (GFM) inverter-based resources replace traditional fossil-fueled synchronous generators as the GFM sources in microgrids, the existing microgrid energy management systems (EMS) need to be updated to control and coordinate multiple GFM inverters that consider system control objectives under different microgrid connection states. For each state, we formulate an optimization problem and apply a real-time feedback-based control algorithm; altogether, the control algorithms seamlessly connect the states into a generic microgrid EMS that controls the nodal voltages and frequencies, becomes a virtual power plant (VPP) when connected to the main grid, and coordinates power sharing responsibility among GFM sources when islanded. We showcase the EMS on a real-world simulation of a microgrid under the different states to demonstrate its operational effectiveness.

Double-Side Cooled 1.2kV, 300A SiC MOSFET Phase-leg Modules for 200 kW, > 100 kW/L Traction Inverters

The packaging of a double-side cooled 1.2 kV, 149 A SiC phase-leg modules has been reported in recent years for making 100 kW, 100 kW/L traction inverters. Each phase-leg module consists of two SiC MOSFETs, one per switch position. Six of the phase-leg modules are assembled into a segmented inverter configuration to meet the power and power density requirement. In this work, the layout of the phase-leg module was redesigned to include four of the SiC MOSFETs, two per switch position, with the aim of doubling the power to 200 kW and increasing the power density beyond 100 kW/L, but with only a 10.25% footprint increase. Key features of the packaging technology developed in the previous work were implemented in the current work, which include silver sintering for chip bonding and porous silver inter-posts for bonding device source pads to substrate. Parasitic extraction simulation showed that the four-chip module has a low parasitic inductance of 4.7 nH, like the two-chip module. Static characterization of the four-chip prototypes showed a low average on-resistance of 9 mΩ and a low average leakage current of 5 nA at Vds of 1.2 kV.

Advanced control techniques for modern inertia based inverters

In this research three artificial intelligent (AI)-based techniques are proposed to regulate the voltage and frequency of a grid-connected inverter. The increase in the penetration of renewable energy sources (RESs) into the power grid has led to the increase in the penetration of fast-responding inertia-less power converters. The increase in the penetration of these power electronics converters changes the nature of the conventional grid, in which the existing kinetic inertia in the rotating parts of the enormous generators plays a vital role. The concept of virtual inertia control scheme is proposed to make the behavior of grid connected inverters more similar to the synchronous generators, by mimicking the mechanical behavior of a synchronous generator. Conventional control techniques lack to perform optimally in nonlinear, uncertain, inaccurate power grids. Besides, the decoupled control assumption in conventional VSGs makes them nonoptimal in resistive grids. The neural network predictive controller, the heuristic dynamic programming, and the dual heuristic dynamic programming techniques are presented in this research to overcome the draw backs of conventional VSGs. The nonlinear characteristics of neural networks, and the online training enable the proposed methods to perform as robust and optimal controllers. The simulation and the experimental laboratory prototype results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed techniques.

Propulsion System Design using a Dual 3-Phase PM Synchronous Reluctance Machine with X-Type Multi-Level GaN Inverter

— A propulsion system design is exhibited here that comprises of an X-type GaN power module based dual multi-level inverter and a PM Synchronous Reluctance motor. With the critical benefits of multi-level operation, namely low common mode EMI noise, low switching loss, low current Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), smoother torque and lower iron loss, this topology targets high system-level efficiency and high power density while using reduced rare earth (RE) elements in its motor. General Motors and Purdue University jointly designed and developed this 800V class, highly scalable traction drive that can deliver 200+ kW of power suitable for C-SUV to truck vehicle class. The 3-phase electric machine design utilizes dual winding with 6 terminals to work in line with the GaN X-type inverter, and results in a tractive solution that ensures higher machine efficiency while reducing cost and uncertainty related to use and availability of heavy rare earth/rare earth elements in its rotor.

Optimal Hairpin Winding Configuration for EV Traction Motors to Enhance Active CMV Cancellation Capability of NPL.X Inverter

Active common-mode voltage (CMV) cancellation in neutral-point-less (NPL.X) inverter is an effective approach for reducing common-mode electromagnetic interference and alleviating voltage stress associated with high-speed switching in EV traction drives. However, the existing hairpin winding configuration often exhibits impedance imbalance due to slot leakage inductance and manufacturing constraints, limiting the effectiveness of active CMV cancellation. This paper investigates symmetric hairpin winding configurations for a dual-three-phase EV traction machine to improve impedance symmetry. Considering the manufacturing constraints of six-layer hairpin windings, four feasible symmetric winding configurations are analyzed. Two-dimensional finite-element analysis is performed to extract the impedance parameters of each configuration. The extracted impedance parameters are used to quantify the impedance mismatch between complementary phase pairs and evaluate its influence on active CMV cancellation. The results show that the fully interleaved winding configuration achieves perfectly balanced phase impedances with 0 % mismatch, whereas the mismatch in the other configurations ranges from approximately 2.4 % to 0.8 %. Consequently, the resulting total CMV overshoot is significantly suppressed to near zero voltage under high-voltage and high switching frequency operating conditions, demonstrating the importance of winding symmetry for maximizing the active CMV cancellation capability of the NPL.X inverter.

Holistic Small-Signal Stability Analysis for Large-Scale Inverter-Intensive Power Systems with Coupled and Full-Order Dynamics from Control Systems and Power Networks

The increasing penetration of inverter-based resources (IBRs) into the existing power systems introduces tremendous benefits for enhanced sustainability but also poses inevitable challenges in terms of insufficient inertia, potential instability, and complex network dynamics, among others. However, the additional coupling introduced by the interactions among gridfollowing (GFL) and grid-forming (GFM) IBRs and the other components (i.e., synchronous generators [SGs], loads, and network, etc.) has not been clearly explored. A holistic, scalable, and quantitative stability analysis framework with the control systems and power networks is still missing. Here, in this paper, to fill in the technical gaps, a holistic small-signal model of the entire system with both rotating generation units and IBRs is established. An extended power flow model with operation dynamics from both generator control schemes and power networks is proposed to provide the varying steady-state operating points for small-signal modeling. The proposed method is compared with MATLAB solvers, and the results show that the proposed approach has a minimum calculation time, which can be less than 12 seconds for a large-scale power system with up to 2,000 buses. Furthermore, a quantitative method is developed to identify the impacts of IBRs on system performance with emphases on the potential stability issues with GFL IBRs, additional benefits of employing GFM IBRs, the feasibility of replacing SGs with GFM IBRs, and the impact of penetration level of different kinds of generation units. Finally, a field island power system is used to verify the proposed approach, and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) tests are provided to further demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed analysis.

Introduction to Grid Forming Inverters: A Key to Transforming our Power Grid [Slides]

A grid-forming (GFM) inverter-based resource (IBR) controls maintain an internal voltage phasor that is constant or nearly constant in the sub-transient to transient time frame. This definition means that the GFM IBR will nearly immediately respond to changes in the external system and attempt to maintain IBR control during challenging network conditions to maintain grid stability. In GFM IBR, the voltage phasor is controlled to maintain synchronism with other devices in the grid while regulating the active and reactive power appropriately to support the grid. This contrasts with conventional GFL IBR controls wherein immediately after a disturbance (0-5 cycles), within the normal operating range of voltage, the output current phasor magnitude and angle remain unchanged, and the current phasor begins changing only within the transient time frame (tens of cycles) to strictly control the active and reactive power being injected into the network. This presentation gives an introduction to GFM IBR and presents the current state of the art in this area.
