Solubility Behavior of CO 2 in Ionic Liquids Based on Ionic Polarity Index Analyses

Ionic liquids (ILs) can serve as effective CO 2 solvents with an appropriate selection of different anions and cations. However, due to the large library of potential IL compositions, rapid screening methods are needed for characterizing and ranking the expected properties. We have recently proposed the ionic polarity index (IPI) parameter, effectively connecting volume-based approaches and electrostatic potential analyses, providing a single metric that can potentially be used to rapidly screen for desirable IL properties. In this work, the corresponding anion and cation IPIs are used to generate correlations with respect to the CO 2 volumetric solubility in ILs. The relationships are generally applicable to groups of ILs within a homologous ion series, and this can be particularly valuable for pre-screening different ion pairings for maximizing gas solvation performance.

Unraveling the Nature of Lasing Emission from Hybrid Silicon Nitride and Colloidal Nanocrystal Photonic Crystals with Low Refractive Index Contrast

Silicon nitride is used for its low optical loss and high thermal stability, making it a suitable platform for visible-light applications in integrated photonic devices. However, its application has been limited due to inefficient light emission, a problem addressed by integrating various types of light emitters onto the platform. In particular, the integration of solution-processable colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) as optical gain materials onto the silicon nitride platform is a promising route but requires a more solid theoretical footing. By leveraging 2D surface-emitting photonic crystal structures combined with NCs, we effectively confine and manipulate light to achieve lasing from green to red. Building on this, we model the light–matter interactions of the low index contrast NC/nitride platform, validated by extensive experimental validations through Fourier imaging techniques, revealing the full photonic band structure and showing clear mode congestion. Finally, these comprehensive studies confirm the potential of hybrid NC-based structures for fully integrated on-chip laser applications and indicate routes for further improvement.

A Three-Component Strategy for Synthesizing High-Entropy Alloy Nanoparticles with High-Index Facets

Controlling the shapes and, more importantly, exposed facets (high-index facets (HIFs), especially) of high-entropy alloy (HEA) nanoparticles is not yet possible. Herein, a three-component synthetic strategy for obtaining tetrahexahedral (THH)-shaped HIF-HEA nanoparticles through a combined alloying-dealloying strategy and liquid-metal mediation process is reported. Metal precursors are first alloyed with Ga to form multielemental nanoparticles and then alloyed with a volatile metal. Selectively dealloying the volatile metal from the nanoparticles is used to regulate their surface energies; the Ga stabilizes the HEA phase, and the trace element stabilizes the HIFs, resulting in THH-shaped HEA nanoparticles (seven different types) with {210} HIFs. Finally, nanoparticle megalibraries containing millions of THH-shaped HIF-HEAs on 4 cm 2 chips with size and composition control shows generalizability and scalability for materials discovery purposes.

Low-index mesoscopic surface reconstructions of Au surfaces using Bayesian force fields

Metal surfaces have long been known to reconstruct, significantly influencing their structural and catalytic properties. Many key mechanistic aspects of these subtle transformations remain poorly understood due to limitations of previous simulation approaches. Using active learning of Bayesian machine-learned force fields trained from ab initio calculations, we enable large-scale molecular dynamics simulations to describe the thermodynamics and time evolution of the low-index mesoscopic surface reconstructions of Au (e.g., the Au(111)-‘Herringbone,’ Au(110)-(1 × 2)-‘Missing-Row,’ and Au(100)-‘Quasi-Hexagonal’ reconstructions). This capability yields direct atomistic understanding of the dynamic emergence of these surface states from their initial facets, providing previously inaccessible information such as nucleation kinetics and a complete mechanistic interpretation of reconstruction under the effects of strain and local deviations from the original stoichiometry. We successfully reproduce previous experimental observations of reconstructions on pristine surfaces and provide quantitative predictions of the emergence of spinodal decomposition and localized reconstruction in response to strain at non-ideal stoichiometries. A unified mechanistic explanation is presented of the kinetic and thermodynamic factors driving surface reconstruction. Furthermore, we study surface reconstructions on Au nanoparticles, where characteristic (111) and (100) reconstructions spontaneously appear on a variety of high-symmetry particle morphologies.

An improved daily standardized precipitation index dataset for mainland China from 1961 to 2018

The standardized precipitation index (SPI), one of the most commonly used drought indicators, is widely used in the research areas of drought analysis and drought prediction in different fields such as meteorology, agriculture, and hydrology. However, its main disadvantage is the relatively coarse time resolution of one month. To improve the time resolution of SPI to identify flash droughts, we have refined the traditional SPI calculation method and developed a new multi-scale daily SPI dataset based on data from 484 meteorological stations in mainland China from 1961 to 2018. SPI data from three different sites (located in Henan, Yunnan, and Fujian Provinces) at the three-month timescale were analyzed by comparing with historically recorded drought events. We found that the new multi-scale daily SPI can effectively capture drought events in different periods and locations and identify the specific start and end times of drought events. In short, our SPI dataset appears reasonable and capable of facilitating drought research in different fields.

CubeSat constellations provide enhanced crop phenology and digital agricultural insights using daily leaf area index retrievals

Satellite remote sensing has great potential to deliver on the promise of a data-driven agricultural revolution, with emerging space-based platforms providing spatiotemporal insights into precision-level attributes such as crop water use, vegetation health and condition and crop response to management practices. Using a harmonized collection of high-resolution Planet CubeSat, Sentinel-2, Landsat-8 and additional coarser resolution imagery from MODIS and VIIRS, we exploit a multi-satellite data fusion and machine learning approach to deliver a radiometrically calibrated and gap-filled time-series of daily leaf area index (LAI) at an unprecedented spatial resolution of 3 m. The insights available from such high-resolution CubeSat-based LAI data are demonstrated through tracking the growth cycle of a maize crop and identifying observable within-field spatial and temporal variations across key phenological stages. Daily LAI retrievals peaked at the tasseling stage, demonstrating their value for fertilizer and irrigation scheduling. An evaluation of satellite-based retrievals against field-measured LAI data collected from both rain-fed and irrigated fields shows high correlation and captures the spatiotemporal development of intra- and inter-field variations. Novel agricultural insights related to individual vegetative and reproductive growth stages were obtained, showcasing the capacity for new high-resolution CubeSat platforms to deliver actionable intelligence for precision agricultural and related applications.

The global Sahel monsoon ocean-pressure index reconciles its regional and large-scale features

Monitoring Sahelian rainfall variability is increasingly critical as climate extremes intensify across the region. Here, we develop the Sahelian Monsoon Ocean-Pressure Index (SMOPI), a novel global synthetic indicator constructed from five dynamically coherent sea-level pressure regions statistically linked to June-September Sahel monsoon rainfall. SMOPI captures intra-seasonal and interannual variability, and crucially, reflects the influence of both regional processes and large-scale teleconnections on monsoon dynamics. It aligns with the dominant rainfall variability mode in reanalyses and 29 CMIP6 models. Strong/positive SMOPI phases coincide with wet years and are associated with enhanced convergence, favorable jet configurations, and robust Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Ocean teleconnections. Conversely, weak/negative SMOPI phases correspond to drought conditions and divergent moisture fluxes. SMOPI exposes model failures in reproducing historical droughts and offers new physical insights into rainfall-driving mechanisms. It stands out as a scalable, potentially transferable diagnostic tool for monitoring/forecasting and evaluating Sahelian monsoon rainfall under global warming.

Probabilistic Prediction of Geomagnetic Storms and the K p index

Geomagnetic activity is often described using summary indices to summarize the likelihood of space weather impacts, as well as when parameterizing space weather models. The geomagnetic index K p in particular, is widely used for these purposes. Current state-of-the-art forecast models provide deterministic K p predictions using a variety of methods – including empirically-derived functions, physics-based models, and neural networks – but do not provide uncertainty estimates associated with the forecast. This paper provides a sample methodology to generate a 3-hour-ahead K p prediction with uncertainty bounds and from this provide a probabilistic geomagnetic storm forecast. Specifically, we have used a two-layered architecture to separately predict storm (K p ≥ 5 – ) and non-storm cases. As solar wind-driven models are limited in their ability to predict the onset of transient-driven activity we also introduce a model variant using solar X-ray flux to assess whether simple models including proxies for solar activity can improve the predictions of geomagnetic storm activity with lead times longer than the L1-to-Earth propagation time. By comparing the performance of these models we show that including operationally-available information about solar irradiance enhances the ability of predictive models to capture the onset of geomagnetic storms and that this can be achieved while also enabling probabilistic forecasts.

Numerical simulation of the beam self-cleaning process in a multimode graded-index fibre during propagation of a pump wave and a Stokes component

A model of coupled modes is proposed, which makes it possible to describe the propagation of a pump wave and a Stokes component in a multimode graded-index fibre. A decrease in the depression in the centre of the profile of the pump wave intensity distribution as a result of the influence of Kerr effects and random linear coupling of modes is demonstrated. Pump depletion in Raman lasing in a graded index multimode fibre

We examine multimode diode laser pump depletion in a graded index multimode (MM) fibre Raman laser generating a high-quality Stokes beam. Spatial ‘hole burning’ in the transmitted pump beam is demonstrated. A balance model is constructed for interaction of the pump and Stokes waves in the MM Raman laser. Analytical formulas are derived and used in calculations demonstrating qualitative agreement with experimental data. The origin of the observed quantitative discrepancies is discussed. (paper)

Using the optimal combined index weight ratio to improve the probability of anomaly detection in big area additive manufacturing

Big Area Additive Manufacturing (BAAM) of composites requires significant time, energy, and material, so it is critical to reduce production inefficiencies to make functional parts without multiple iterations. Statistical process control coupled with Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is a powerful technique that provides a quick, computationally inexpensive, and intuitive way for operators to detect defects that form in a manufacturing process without massive datasets. Recently, a combined index that is a weighted sum of the Hotelling's T 2 and squared residual error statistics has been proposed that can be monitored in one chart, improving interpretation accuracy and simplicity. However, the literature does not offer a formal method to optimise the weights. Here, we introduce two new approaches to the traditional weight selection approach using simulated and BAAM image data. Approach 1 uses a theoretically motivated optimum inspired by probabilistic principal component analysis. Approach 2 systematically varies the ratio of the weights to find the optimum. We show that approach 1 delivers optimal anomaly detection performance in select cases while approach 2 fares better in practice. Surprisingly, we also show that choosing a more complex PCA model has a minimal negative impact on anomaly detection performance compared to a more simplistic model.

The effect of school intervention programs on the body mass index of adolescents: a systematic review with meta-analysis

Abstract Effective obesity interventions in adolescent populations have been identified as an immediate priority action to stem the increasing prevalence of adult obesity. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to make a quantitative analysis of the impact of school-based interventions on body mass index during adolescence. Studies were retrieved from PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct and Web of Science databases. Results were pooled using a random-effects model with 95% confidence interval considered statistically significant. Of the 18 798 possible relevant articles identified, 12 articles were included in this meta-analysis. The global result showed a low magnitude effect, though it was statistically significant (N = 14 428), global e.s. = −0.055, P = 0.004 (95% CI = −0.092, −0.017). Heterogeneity was low among the studies (I2 = 9.017%). The funnel plot showed no evidence of publication bias. The rank-correlation test of Begg (P = 0.45641) and Egger’s regression (P = 0.19459) confirmed the absence of bias. This meta-analysis reported a significant effect favoring the interventions; however, future research are needed since the reported the evidence was of low magnitude, with the studies following a substantial range of approaches and mostly had a modest methodological quality.

Dust and the intrinsic spectral index of quasar variations: hints of finite stress at the innermost stable circular orbit

ABSTRACT We present a study of 9 242 spectroscopically confirmed quasars with multiepoch ugriz photometry from the SDSS Southern Survey. By fitting a separable linear model to each quasar’s spectral variations, we decompose their five-band spectral energy distributions into variable (disc) and non-variable (host galaxy) components. In modelling the disc spectra, we include attenuation by dust on the line of sight through the host galaxy to its nucleus. We consider five commonly used attenuation laws, and find that the best description is by dust similar to that of the Small Magellanic Cloud, inferring a lack of carbonaceous grains from the relatively weak 2175-Å absorption feature. We go on to construct a composite spectrum for the quasar variations spanning 700–8000 Å. By varying the assumed power-law Lν ∝ να spectral slope, we find a best-fitting value α = 0.71 ± 0.02, excluding at high confidence the canonical Lν ∝ ν1/3 prediction for a steady-state accretion disc with a T ∝ r−3/4 temperature profile. The bluer spectral index of the observed quasar variations instead supports the model of Agol & Krolik, and Mummery & Balbus, in which a steeper temperature profile, T ∝ r−7/8, develops as a result of finite magnetically induced stress at the innermost stable circular orbit extracting energy and angular momentum from the black hole spin.

First-principles calculations of metal surfaces. II. Properties of low-index platinum surfaces toward understanding electron emission

The stability of low-index platinum surfaces and their electronic properties is investigated with density functional theory, toward the goal of understanding the surface structure and electron emission, and identifying precursors to electrical breakdown, on nonideal platinum surfaces. Propensity for electron emission can be related to a local work function, which, in turn, is intimately dependent on the local surface structure. The (1×N) missing row reconstruction of the Pt(110) surface is systematically examined. The (1×3) missing row reconstruction is found to be the lowest in energy, with the (1×2) and (1×4) slightly less stable. In the limit of large (1×N) with wider (111) nanoterraces, the energy accurately approaches the asymptotic limit of the infinite Pt(111) surface. Furthermore, this suggests a local energetic stability of narrow (111) nanoterraces on free Pt surfaces that could be a common structural feature in the complex surface morphologies, leading to work functions consistent with those on thermally grown Pt substrates.

Alternative Vector PWM for CSI Common-Mode Voltage Reduction During Voltage-Boost Operation with Low Modulation Index

This paper proposes a new pulse-width modulation (PWM) scheme named alternative vector PWM (AVM) algorithm that reduces the common-mode voltage (vCM) generated by a 3-phase current source inverter (CSI) during operation within a portion of its voltage-boost regime when the CSI’s modulation index is below 1/3–√(=0.5774). Three different active current vector pairs (one conventional pair with adjacent active current vectors and two proposed pairs with non-adjacent active current vectors) are used to reduce vCM based on the CSI’s output voltage conditions. Experimental results confirm significant reductions in major vCM spectral components by up to approx. 85% between the 3rd harmonic of the fundamental frequency and the CSI’s PWM frequency, validating the advantages of the proposed AVM algorithm over the conventional PWM.

Persistent Memory Object Storage and Indexing for Scientific Computing

This paper presents Mosiqs, a persistent memory object storage framework with metadata indexing and querying for scientific computing. We design Mosiqs based on the key idea that memory objects on shared PM pool can live beyond the application lifetime and can become the sharing currency for applications and scientists. Mosiqs provides an aggregate memory pool atop an array of persistent memory devices to store and access memory objects. Mosiqs uses a lightweight persistent memory key-value store to manage the metadata of memory objects such as persistent pointer mappings, which enables memory object sharing for effective scientific collaborations. Mosiqs is implemented atop PMDK. We evaluate the proposed approach on many-core server with an array of real PM devices. The preliminary evaluation confirms a 100% improvement for write and 30% in read performance against a PM-aware file system approach.

Historical Power Outages of the United States and the Social Vulnerability Index

Several works have been documented in the literature to study the societal effect of power outages and to analyze their correlation with the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI). Because the SVI is calculated based on the summed rank of multiple vulnerability factors for environmental hazards, it can include factors irrelevant to power outages caused by extreme events. This work performs a detailed correlation analysis for social vulnerability and power outages by considering different SVI themes (e.g., socioeconomic status, household composition, racial and ethnic minority status, and housing and transportation) and power outages with and without a threshold for extreme weather events. Although there is some relation between specific themes and aspects of power outages and the SVI in the results, there is no strong distinction between power outage durations and low vs. high SVI values. These results point to the need for further research that grounds the specific factors and methods used to develop SVI and related indices to energy services and power systems disruptions.

Inserting a Low-Refractive-Index Dielectric Rear Reflector into PERC Cells: Challenges and Opportunities

One of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce the operating temperature of photovoltaic systems in the field is to reflect unusable, 'sub-bandgap' light with energies below the cell absorber's bandgap energy. In this work, low-refractive index SiO2 nanoparticle films inserted between c-Si wafers and metal electrodes significantly increase the reflectance of sub-bandgap light in fabricated test structures. These films are then integrated into the standard PERC fabrication sequence, revealing that the reflection benefits remains after some processing steps but are lost in certain conditions. The SiO2 nanoparticle films are easily ablated during laser contact opening, but are undesirably etched during post-laser cleaning. After Al metallization, the fully fabricated devices show enhanced sub-bandgap reflection when annealed at moderate temperatures, but energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy shows that high-temperature firing causes unwanted Al penetration into the SiO2 nanoparticle film, compromising reflection.
