Nonmetallic materials handbook. Volume 2: Epoxy and silicone materials

Chemical and physical property test data obtained during qualification and receiving inspection testing of nonmetallic materials for the Viking Mars Lander program is presented. Thermochemical data showing degradation as a function of temperature from room temperature through 773 K is included. These data include activation energies for thermal degradation, rate constants, and exo- and/or endotherms. Thermal degradations carried out under vacuum include mass spectral data taken simultaneously during the decomposition. Many materials have supporting data such as condensation rates of degassed products and isothermal weight loss. Changes in mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties after exposure to 408 K in nitrogen for times ranging from 380 to 570 hours are included for many materials.

Handbook of photothermal test data on encapsulant materials

Laboratory tests performed to characterize candidate encapsulation materials with respect to changes in their physical and chemical properties caused by photothermal aging are described. Several key material properties relating directly to material degradation and deterioration of performance were identified and were monitored as functions of aging conditions and time. A status report on accelerated testing activities is provided and experimental data are presented. It will be updated periodically as more data become available.

Propagation effects on satellite systems at frequencies below 10 GHz, a handbook for satellite systems design, 1st edition

Satellite communications below about 6 GHz may need to contend with ionospheric effects, including Faraday rotation and ionospheric scintillation, which become increasingly significant with decreasing frequency. Scintillation is most serious in equatorial, auroral, and polar latitudes; even the 4 to 6 GHz frequency range turns out to be subject to scintillation to a significant degree of equatorial latitudes. Faraday rotation, excess range or time delay, phase advance, Doppler frequency fluctuations, and dispersion are proportional to total electron content (TEC) or its variation along the path. Tropospheric refraction and fading affects low angle satellite transmissions as well as terrestrial paths. Attenuation and depolarization due to rain become less important with decreasing frequency but need consideration for frequencies of about 4 GHz and higher. Empirically derived relations are useful for estimating the attenuation expected due to rain for particular percentages of time. Aeronautical, maritime, and land mobile satellite services are subject to fading due to multipath propagation.

Satellite services handbook. Interface guidelines

Satellite interfaces for on orbit servicing, both manned and unmanned are identified, and is intended to be used by designers of space vehicles, both foreign and domestic. A primary concern is for design of interfaces with the astronaut in the loop, especially extravehicular activity, but also intravehicular activity and operations that are remote but have man-in-the-loop. The main emphasis is on servicing in low earth orbits from the Space Shuttle and also from the Space Station or other platforms.

Middle Atmosphere Program. Handbook for MAP, volume 9

The term Mesosphere-Stratosphere-Troposphere radar (MST) was invented to describe the use of a high power radar transmitter together with a large vertically, or near vertically, pointing antenna to study the dynamics and structure of the atmosphere from about 10 to 100 km, using the very weak coherently scattered radiation returned from small scale irregularities in refractive index. Nine topics were addressed including: meteorological and dynamic requirements for MST radar networks; interpretation of radar returns for clear air; techniques for the measurement of horizontal and vertical velocities; techniques for studying gravity waves and turbulence; capabilities and limitations of existing MST radar; design considerations for high power VHF radar transceivers; optimum radar antenna configurations; and data analysis techniques.
