Versatile data handling system study

The objective of the study is discussed to arrive at recommendations for the most suitable image recording equipment for the use with various spaceborne earth observation sensors. Future sensors presently under consideration were included in the study, as well as existing sensors and those under development.

Film handling procedures for Skylab S-056 experiment

In a simulation conducted August 28, 1972, two rolls of Type SO-212 film were rewound in the sensitometer darkroom preparatory to processing. The first roll contained approximately 500 feet of film exposed to a resolution target and was unloaded from a can. The second roll of 1000 feet, with about 600 feet advanced to the takeup side, was in a flight magazine. The downloading and rewinding of this second roll of film is described in detail.

Communications and data handling

The communications system for the planetary entry missions is discussed with emphasis on the basic problems of the data link: uncertainty about atmospheric composition, time limitation for transmission, and geometry variation or change in aspect angles. The baseline design for Pioneer is reviewed. In this design, telemetry is transmitted only during the descent phase of probe entry at 44 bits-per-second. It is indicated that this design encompasses different atmospheric entries for different planets, different atmospheric models of planetary atmospheres, and allows for dispersion in the entry angle and phasing. The radio frequency environment is considered to be the prime problem of the communication link, therefore a discussion of the ionospheric absorption and turbulence models is included.

A new concept for airship mooring and ground handling

Calculations were made to determine the feasibility of applying the negative air cushion (NAC) principle to the mooring of airships. Pressures required for the inflation of the flexible trunks are not excessive and the maintenance of sufficient hold down force is possible in winds up to 50 knots. Fabric strength requirements for a typical NAC sized for a 10-million cubic foot airship were found to be approximately 200 lbs./in. Corresponding power requirements range between 66-HP and 5600-HP. No consideration was given to the internal airship loads caused by the use of a NAC and further analysis in much greater detail is required before this method could be applied to an actual design, however, the basic concept appears to be sound and no problem areas of a fundamental nature are apparent.

MEMS reagent and sample handling procedure: Feasibility of viral antibody detection by passive immune agglutination

An attempt was made to develop a test requiring no preadsorption steps for the assessment of antibodies to rubella and mumps viruses using the passive immune agglutination (PIA) method. Both rubella and mumps antigens and antibodies were prepared. Direct PIA tests, using rubella antigen-coated beads, and indirect PIA tests, using rubella antibody-coated beads, were investigated. Attempts, using either method, were unsuccessful. Serum interference along with nonspecific agglutination of beads by the rubella antigen resulted in no specific response under the test conditions investigated. A new, highly sensitive approach, the enzyme immunoassay (EIA) test system, is recommended to overcome the nonspecificity. This system is a logical outgrowth of some of the solid phase work done on MEMS and represents the next generation tests system that can be directly applied to early disease detection and monitoring.

Handling qualities requirements for control configured vehicles

The potential effects of fly by wire and control configured vehicle concepts on flying qualities are considered. Failure mode probabilities and consequences, controllability, and dynamics of highly augmented aircraft are among the factors discussed in terms of design criteria.

Overhead-handling, universal-positioning device

Lift-and-rotate mechanism can raise payload and reorient it while it is suspended in space. Mechanism is itself suspended from overhead lift point and is operated from single pendant/reel control panel. Lift capacity and size of mechanism is determined by application.

High gantry for lifting and handling

Standard gantry has been inexpensively modified with standard pipes to allow lifting of heavy loads to distances between 14 and 30 ft. Addition of air mounts permits extensive and sensitive equipment to be moved smoothly and safely over smooth or moderately rough surfaces. Unit has been tested at 6000 pounds without yielding.

Data-handling considerations for advanced high-resolution multispectral scanners

Several scanner design parameters that greatly affect data rates were varied to determine overall effect on data rates. Bit rates were calculated for scanners with 10-, 15-, 20-, and 30-meter instantaneous fields of view; with 5, 7, and 10 channels; and with swath widths of 46.3, 92.6, 138.9, and 185.2 kilometers (25, 50, 75, and 100 nautical miles). The data were analyzed to determine whether they could be (1) recorded onboard the spacecraft with currently available equipment, (2) recorded onboard with the equipment proposed for the 1980-90 period, (3) transmitted to earth with current or proposed equipment; and (4) compressed and decompressed without significant degradation of classification accuracy. The effect of classifying 10-meter scanner data on the existing and the development pattern-recognition systems was examined.

Rocket propulsion hazard summary: Safety classification, handling experience and application to space shuttle payload

The DOT classification for transportation, the military classification for quantity distance, and hazard compatibility grouping used to regulate the transportation and storage of explosives are presented along with a discussion of tests used in determining sensitivity of propellants to an impact/shock environment in the absence of a large explosive donor. The safety procedures and requirements of a Scout launch vehicle, Western and Eastern Test Range, and the Minuteman, Delta, and Poseidon programs are reviewed and summarized. Requirements of the space transportation system safety program include safety reviews from the subsystem level to the completed payload. The Scout safety procedures will satisfy a portion of these requirements but additional procedures need to be implemented to comply with the safety requirements for Shuttle operation from the Eastern Test Range.
