Oscillator strength trends in group IVb homologous ions

Shock tube data are used to examine the systematic f value behavior in prominent visible transition arrays (ns-np, np-(n+l)s, np-nd) for the homologous emitter sequence Si 11, Ge 11, Sn 11, and Pb 11. Regularities found for these data are compared with trends in lighter elements. Agreements and s disparities with theoretical and experimental oscillator strengths from the literature are noted.

Shallow-homojunction GaAs solar cells

Single-crystal GaAs shallow-homojunction solar cells on GaAs or Ge substrates, without Ga sub 1-x Al sub x As window layers, that have conversion efficiencies exceeding 20% at AM1 (17% at AMO). Using a simple theoretical model, good fits were obtained between computer calculations and experimental data for external quantum efficiency and conversion efficiency of cells with different values of n+ layer thickness. The calculations not only yield values for material properties of the GaAs layers composing the cells but will also permit the optimization of cell designs for space and terrestrial applications. Preliminary measurements indicate that the shallow-homojunction cells are resistant to electron irradiation. In the best test so far, bombardment with 1 x 10 to the 16th power/sq cm fluence of 1 MeV electrons reduced the short-circuit current by only about 6%.

Lines in the 2736-3303 A spectrum of Arcturus

Results are reported for a study of the near-UV spectrum of Arcturus as recorded with a balloon-borne echelle spectrograph-vidicon detector system in the spectral region from 2700 to 3300 A at 0.1-A resolution. A condensed version of the Arcturus spectrum is provided along with profile descriptions and identifications for 383 absorption features detected in the near-UV. Elements definitely present include Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Sr, Zr, and La. Elements with spectral features indicating possible presence include Be, O, S, K, Ga, Ge, Nb, Sn, Gd, and Bi. Line blocking is shown to be extensive in the spectral region studied, and eight possible continuum 'windows' are found in the near-UV. Emission lines of chromospheric origin due to Mg II, Fe I, Fe II, and possibly Cr II are also identified in the region from 2736 to 3303 A. It is noted that the Fe I emission lines at 2823 and 2844 A are optically pumped.

Volatile elements in chondrites - Metamorphism or nebular fractionation

Three of the most highly metamorphosed meteorites of their respective classes, Shaw (LL7), Karoonda (C5), and Coolidge (C4), were analyzed by radiochemical neutron activation analysis for Ag, Au, Bi, Br, Cd, Cs, Ge, In, Ir, Ni, Os, Pd, Rb, Re, Sb, Se, Te, Tl, U, and Zn. Comparison with data by Lipschutz and coworkers (1977) on artificially heated primitive meteorites shows that the natural metamorphism of meteorites cannot have taken place in a system open to volatiles. Shaw, metamorphosed at 1300 C for more than 1 million yr, is less depleted in In, Bi, Ag, Te, Zn, and Tl than Krymka heated at 1000 C for 1 week. Karoonda, metamorphosed at 600 C for many millennia, is less depleted in Bi and Tl than Allende heated at 600 C for 1 week. Data on primordial noble gases also show that the volatile-element patterns of ordinary and carbonaceous chondrites were established by nebular condensation and changed little, if at all, during metamorphism. For enstatite chondrites, the evidence is still incomplete but seems to favor a nebular origin of the volatile pattern.

Four-color infrared bolometer system for one-meter telescope

A far-infrared photometer has been developed as a focal plane instrument for a balloon-borne 102-cm telescope. The four gallium-doped Ge bolometers adopted for the system operate at 1.8 K in a liquid-helium dewar. Wavelength bands of the four-bolometer system are a narrow spectrum between 18 and 22 microns, and bands centered at 42, 70, and 140 microns. The responsivity and Johnson noise of the detectors limit the performance of the instrument.

Thermodynamics of selected trace elements in the Jovian atmosphere

The thermochemistry of several hundred compounds of twelve selected trace elements (Ge, Se, Ga, As, Te, Pb, Sn, Cd, Sb, Tl, In, and Bi) has been investigated for solar composition material along a Jupiter adiabat. The results indicate that AsF3, InBr, TlI, and SbS, in addition to CO, PH3, GeH4, AsH3, H2Se, HCl, HF, and H3BO3 proposed by Barshay and Lewis (1978), may be potential chemical tracers of atmospheric dynamics. The reported observation of GeH4 is interpreted on the basis of new calculations as implying rapid vertical transport from levels where the temperature is greater than or equal to 800 K. Upper limits are also set on the abundances of many gaseous compounds of the elements investigated.

Procrustean science - Indigenous siderophiles in the lunar highlands, according to Delano and Ringwood

An attempt is made to show that Delano and Ringwood (1978) reached the conclusion that the siderophiles in the lunar highlands are mainly of indigenous rather than meteoric origin by stretching and chopping the evidence to fit a preconceived mold. In determining the abundance of siderophiles and volatiles in the lunar highlands, Delano and Ringwood rejected evidence supplied by pristine rocks uncontaminated by meteoric debris, on the basis that these rocks are impact melts. It is argued that there is no evidence that complete melting and slow freezing needed for settling of metal is ever attained in lunar impacts. Moreover, some of the meteorite-free rocks are clasts within, and hence older than the siderophile-rich breccias that Delano and Ringwood consider more pristine. If one uses the pristine highland rocks to determine an indigenous component, no problems with enrichment of Zn, Ge, As, Ag, Sb, and Au in the indigenous component relative to mare basalts are encountered, since the pristine rocks show no significant enrichment in these elements.

Tests of low background photo conductors

In support of two infrared astronomy space projects, the IRAS satellite and the IRT on Spacelab 2, low-background tests were carried out on the performance and characterization of Si:Ga, Si:As, Si:Sb and Ge:Ga photoconductive detectors. These test results represent a useful appraisal of this family of detectors when operated at 1.8-4.2 K and at background power levels of 10 to the -14th to 10 to the -13th W. In addition to detector performance data, results are also presented on cryogenically cooled MOSFET amplifiers operated in the source follower and in the balanced-dc-TIA configurations.

Fractional crystallization of iron meteorites, an experimental study

Measurements of the distribution coefficients of various elements (Ni, Co, P, Pt, Ir, Ge, Cr, and Au) between solid and liquid phases were made for FeNi alloys. A high thermal gradient crystal growing furnace was employed in order to promote plane front solidification, rapid mixing in the liquid and a minimum of diffusion in the solid. Eight measurements of the nickel distribution coefficient gave an average value of 0.91 plus or minus 0.03 and this value was independent of the Ni concentration in the range 5.5 to 8.75 wt. % Ni. Equilibrium distribution coefficients were also calculated by correcting for the diffusion boundary layer present in the liquid. These values are within 20% of the measured distribution coefficient values. Except for Co and Ni, all the measured distribution coefficient values are closer to 1.0 than those calculated by Scott (1972) for the IIIAB irons. Using the experimental values and the calculated equilibrium values for ternary additions to FeNi melts, it appears that fractional crystallization processes will not explain the observed chemical variations in the major iron meteorite groups. Alternative explanations are suggested which also recognize the fact that cooling rates vary widely in several chemical groups.

Meteoritic material in lunar highland samples from the Apollo 11 and 12 sites

Radiochemical neutron activation analyses for Ag, Au, Bi, Br, Cd, Cs, Ge, In, Ir, Ni, Os, Pd, Rb, Re, Sb, Te, Tl, U and Zn were carried out on 11 samples from the Apollo 11 and 12 sites (two samples of rock 12013, one granitic and one KREEPy; 4 KREEP fragments from 2-4 mm soil 12033,2; 4 anorthositic fragments from 1-3 mm soil 10085,104; 1 sample of 'Luny' rock-felsite-KREEP breccia 12013 10085,31 LR-1). Most Apollo 12 samples were found to have an Imbrium meteoritic component; others, typified by the Luny breccia, apparently contain a new meteoritic component of low Re content. Components of higher Ir/Au ratio (3L, 5L and 7) were found in Apollo 11 anorthositic samples; the fact that their enrichment in meteoritic siderophiles parallels that of Fe, Mg, REE and other KREEP elements is consistent with progressive contamination of an anorthositic crust. The Luny rock was tentatively classified Group 2, supporting the assignment of this group to Serenitatis.

I-Xe dating of silicate and troilite from IAB iron meteorites

Silicate and troilite inclusions from IAB iron meteorites were dated by the I-Xe technique. Silicate samples from inclusions in the Copiapo, Landes, Woodbine, Pitts and Mundrabilla meteorites and troilite samples from Pitts and Mundrabilla were subjected to neutron irradiation and the xenon isotope ratios produced were determined. Well-defined I-Xe ages were obtained for Woodbine, Copiapo, Landes and Mundrabilla and are found to be within 3.7 million years of the Bjurbole meteorite, suggesting a close relationship to the stone chondrites. The analysis of troilite from Pitts suggests an age of 17 million years older than Bjurbole, while Mundrabilla troilite is observed to predate Mundrabilla silicate. The abundances of Ga, Ge and Ni are found to be correlated with I-Xe ages, supporting the validity of the I-Xe dating method. The results are considered to favor a nebular model of meteorite formation.

Characterization and properties of controlled nucleation thermochemical deposited (CNTD) silicon carbide

The microstructure of controlled nucleation thermochemical deposition (CNTD) - SiC material was studied and the room temperature and high temperature bend strength and oxidation resistance was evaluated. Utilizing the CNTD process, ultrafine grained (0.01-0.1 mm) SiC was deposited on W - wires (0.5 mm diameter by 20 cm long) as substrates. The deposited SiC rods had superior surface smoothness and were without any macrocolumnar growth commonly found in conventional CVD material. At both room and high temperature (1200 - 1380 C), the CNTD - SiC exhibited bend strength approximately 200,000 psi (1380 MPa), several times higher than that of hot pressed, sintered, or CVD SiC. The excellent retention of strength at high temperature was attributed to the high purity and fine grain size of the SiC deposit and the apparent absence of grain growth at elevated temperatures. The rates of weight change for CNTD - SiC during oxidation were lower than for NC-203 (hot pressed SiC), higher than for GE's CVD - SiC, and considerably below those for HS-130 (hot pressed Si3N4). The high purity, fully dense, and stable grain size CNTD - SiC material shows potential for high temperature structural applications; however problem areas might include: scaling the process to make larger parts, deposition on removable substrates, and the possible residual tensile stress.

SPS market analysis

A market analysis task included personal interviews by GE personnel and supplemental mail surveys to acquire statistical data and to identify and measure attitudes, reactions and intentions of prospective small solar thermal power systems (SPS) users. Over 500 firms were contacted, including three ownership classes of electric utilities, industrial firms in the top SIC codes for energy consumption, and design engineering firms. A market demand model was developed which utilizes the data base developed by personal interviews and surveys, and projected energy price and consumption data to perform sensitivity analyses and estimate potential markets for SPS.

Phase 1 wind tunnel tests of the J-97 powered, external augmentor V/STOL model

Test results are presented for a large scale, external augmentor V/STOL model in a 40 ft by 80 ft wind tunnel. The model was powered by a GE J97 engine and featured longitudinal ejectors alongside and external to the fuselage together with an augmentor flap on the low aspect ratio, double-delta wing. A static thrust augmentation ratio of 1.60 was measured for the fuselage augmentor at a nozzle pressure ratio of 3.0 and a nozzle exhaust gas temperature of 700 C. At forward speed the model showed a strong positive lift interference due to the augmentor flap, and a marked absence of negative lift interference due to the fuselage augmentor jet system. The nose-up moment of the fuselage augmentor inlet flow was approximately cancelled by a 60 deg deflection of the augmentor flap. An assessment of the thrust and drag components to allow the prediction of transition performance of aircraft designs based on the present conceptual model was made. Lateral tests showed strong but well ordered effects of power.

Infrared heterodyne receivers with IF responses approaching 5 GHz

Specialized coherent 10.6 micrometer infrared receivers were developed with infrared frequency responses approaching 5 GHz. Carbon dioxide lasers were employed for these applications because of their availability, stability, and high average power levels. Heterodyne receivers which employ extrinsic photoconductive Ge:Cu(Sb) mixers were developed for measurements of carbon dioxide laser scattering to determine: (1) the drive lower hybrid wave density fluctuations; and (2) the plasma ion temperature of the dense Tokamak plasmas.

High resolution absorption coefficients for Freon-12

The ultra high resolution absorption coefficients of the Q-branch of Freon-12 obtained with tunable diode laser spectroscopy are presented. Continuous spectra are presented from 1155/cm to 1163/cm, and absolute wavelength calibration was obtained using SO2 spectra as a standard and a 5 cm Ge etalon for relative calibration between SO2 lines. The Freon-12 data obtained at a pressure of 0.05 torr showed a rich and highly structured spectra, but with the exception of three isolated features, collisional broadening reduces the spectra to a structureless continuum for nitrogen pressures greater than 20 torr. The spectra at 1161/cm continue to exhibit structure at atmospheric pressure.

Detection of 6.13 MeV gamma-rays within and at the top of the atmosphere

A measurement of the 6.13 MeV gamma-radiation from excited O-16 in the atmosphere has been made with a high-resolution Ge(Li) spectrometer flown from Palestine, Texas, 1974 June 10, on a high-altitude balloon. This measurement, made both within and near the top of the atmosphere, is found to have the same general profile as predicted by a semiempirical model, but gives a flux about a factor of 2 higher than predicted. Certain variations in the intensity at float altitude have led to the hypothesis of an extraterrestrial source of 6.13 MeV gamma-radiation from the galactic anticenter. The 3 sigma upper limits for a number of other astrophysically significant line fluxes are also given. The data presented here are consistent with either a source or a no-source hypothesis.
