Report on an international workshop on Cryptoexplosions and Catastrophes in the Geological Record, with a Special Focus on the Vredefort Structure

Eighty-five geoscientists gathered in the heart of the Vredefort Cryptoexplosion structure to discuss and evaluate the current knowledge about mass extinctions, impact and volcanic cratering and to obtain first-hand information on the Vredefort structure and its origin. Presentations were made within 8 topical sessions: (1) the regional setting of the Vredefort structure; (2) the Vredefort structure itself; (3) deformations and microdeformations; (4) large cryptoexplosion structures; (5) the Ries Crater; (6) tektites; (7) the K-T boundary, and (8) tectonophysics of cratering. The program was rounded up by working group and plenum discussions culminating in a Workshop report emphasizing problem areas, gaps in the data base and recommendations for future research.

Hypersonic airbreathing vehicle conceptual design (focus on aero-space plane)

The airbreathing single stage to orbit (SSTO) vehicle design environment is variable-rich, intricately networked and sensitivity intensive. As such, it represents a tremondous technology challenge. Creating a viable design will require sophisticated configuration/synthesis and the synergistic integration of advanced technologies across the discipline spectrum. In design exercises, reductions in the fuel weight-fraction requirements projected for an orbital vehicle concept can result from improvements in aerodynamics/controls, propulsion efficiencies and trajectory optimization; also, gains in the fuel weight-fraction achievable for such a concept can result from improvements in structural design, heat management techniques, and material properties. As these technology advances take place, closure on a viable vehicle design will be realizable.

Recovery of excitation intensity dependence in pulsed, focused beams - Nonsaturated case

It is shown how the dependence of a nonsaturated excitation process on local, instantaneous intensity can be obtained from temporally and spatially unresolved data by inversion, even for a nonuniform intensity distribution in the probe volume. This treatment is in contrast with the usual approach in which effects of nonuniform excitation are either disregarded or simulated. For exponential intensity profiles, the solution is obtained in the form of an Abel inversion. The ill-conditioned nature of the problem is demonstrated, and extension to the study of intensity-dependent line shapes is made.

Unsteady heat transfer in turbine blade ducts - Focus on combustor sources

Thermal waves generated by either turbine rotor blades cutting through nonuniform combustor temperature fields or unsteady burning could lead to thermal fatigue cracking in the blades. To determine the magnitude of the thermal oscillation in blades with complex shapes and material compositions, a finite element Galerkin formulation has been developed to study combustor generated thermal wave propagation in a model two-dimensional duct with a uniform plug flow profile. The reflection and transmission of the thermal waves at the entrance and exit boundaries are determined by coupling the finite element solutions at the entrance and exit to the eigenfunctions of an infinitely long adiabatic duct. Example solutions are presented. In general, thermal wave propagation from an air passage into a metallic blade wall is small and not a problem. However, if a thermal barrier coating is applied to a metallic surface under conditions of a high heat transfer, a good impedance match is obtained and a significant portion of the thermal wave can pass into the blade material.

Ada task scheduling: A focused Ada investigation

The types of control that are important for real time task scheduling are discussed. Some closely related real time issues are mentioned and major committee and research activities in this area are delineated. Although there are some problems with Ada and its real time task scheduling, Ada presents fewer than any known alternative. Ada was designed for the domain of real time embedded systems, but Ada compilers may not contain a level of task scheduling support that is adequate for all real time applications. The question addressed is which implementations of Ada's task scheduling are adequate for effective real time systems for NASA applications.

Transferring data objects: A focused Ada investigation

The use of the Ada language does not guarantee that data objects will be in the same form or have the same value after they have been stored or transferred to another system. There are too many possible variables in such things as the formats used and other protocol conditions. Differences may occur at many different levels of support. These include program level, object level, application level, and system level. A standard language is only one aspect of making a complex system completely homogeneous. Many components must be standardized and the various standards must be integrated. The principal issues in providing for interaction between systems are of exchanging files and data objects between systems which may not be compatible in terms of their host computer, operating system or other factors. A typical resolution of the problem of invalidating data involves at least a common external form, for data objects and for representing the relationships and attributes of data collections. Some of the issues dealing with the transfer of data are listed and consideration is given on how these issues may be handled in the Ada language.

The influence of processor focus on speckle correlation statistics for a Shuttle imaging radar scene of Hurricane Josephine

The surface wave field produced by Hurricane Josephine was imaged by the L-band SAR aboard the Challenger on October 12, 1984. Exponential trends found in the two-dimensional autocorrelations of speckled image data support an equilibrium theory model of sea surface hydrodynamics. The notions of correlated specular reflection, surface coherence, optimal Doppler parameterization and spatial resolution are discussed within the context of a Poisson-Rayleigh statistical model of the SAR imaging process.

Hypersonic airbreathing vehicle design - Focus on aero-space plane

Creating a viable, 'aerospaceplane' airbreathing SSTO vehicle will require sophisticated configuration synthesis and a synergistic integration of advanced technologies across the spectrum of disciplines. In design exercises conducted to date, reductions in the fuel weight-fraction requirement can result from improvements in aerodynamics/controls, enhanced propulsion efficiencies, and trajectory optimization. Additional improvements in fuel-weight fraction can result from improvements in structural design, heat-management techniques, and materials properties.

Ada/POSIX binding: A focused Ada investigation

NASA is seeking an operating system interface definition (OSID) for the Space Station Program (SSP) in order to take advantage of the commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products available today and the many that are expected in the future. NASA would also like to avoid the reliance on any one source for operating systems, information system, communication system, or instruction set architecture. The use of the Portable Operating System Interface for Computer Environments (POSIX) is examined as a possible solution to this problem. Since Ada is already the language of choice for SSP, the question of an Ada/POSIX binding is addressed. The intent of the binding is to provide access to the POSIX standard operation system (OS) interface and environment, by which application portability of Ada applications will be supported at the source code level. A guiding principle of Ada/POSIX binding development is a clear conformance of the Ada interface with the functional definition of POSIX. The interface is intended to be used by both application developers and system implementors. The objective is to provide a standard that allows a strictly conforming application source program that can be compiled to execute on any conforming implementation. Special emphasis is placed on first providing those functions and facilities that are needed in a wide variety of commercial applications

Early focus development effort, ultrasonic inspection of fixed housing metal-to-adhesive bondline

An ultrasonic technique was developed for the fixed housing metal-to-adhesive bondline that will support the Flight 15 time frame and subsequent motors. The technique has the capability to detect a 1.0 inch diameter unbond with a 90 percent probability of detection (POD) at a 95 percent confidence level. The technique and support equipment will perform within the working envelope dictated by a stacked motor configuration.

In situ backscatter measurements over Pacific Ocean using two coherent focused CO2 lidars

Preliminary results of CS lidar measurements over the Pacific Ocean using two CO2 Doppler lidars operating at 9.1 and 10.6 microns are presented. SNR calculations during real-time and postprocessing were performed using a multistep signal search and signal power estimation algorithm optimized for weak signal conditions. Typical aerosol structure observed in the troposphere was found to consist of a boundary layer, a cloud-pumped layer, and a clean background layer; backscatter from cloud-free air was found to vary over three to four orders of magnitude or more.

Focused interplanetary transport of solar energetic particles through self-generated Alfven waves

The coupled evolution of solar-flare protons and interplanetary Alfven waves based on the quasi-linear theory implies an order of magnitude amplification (damping) in the outward (inward) propagating left helical resonant Alfven waves at less than 0.4-AU helioradius, if the proton intensity at 1 AU exceeds 300 particles/(sq cm s sr MeV) at 1 MeV, and the initial wave intensities give mean free paths of more than 0.5 AU. The wave growth significantly retards solar-particle transport, and has implications on the nature of solar-wind turbulence.

Reconstruction of the Hubble Space Telescope mirror figure from out-of-focus stellar images

Both the amplitude and the phase of the incoming wave front viewed from the focal plane are reconstructed from the illumination recorded in defocused stellar images taken in flight by the HST. The reconstructed wavefront surface shows very little aberration. Compared to geometrical optics methods, the technique produces high spatial resolution wavefront maps with images taken closer to the telescope's focal plane. For the HST, the quality of the wavefront reconstruction is limited by the telescope jitter. The technique cannot be applied to ground-based telescopes at optical wavelength where the image is heavily blurred by the atmosphere. It is argued to be promising as a diagnostic tool for optical telescopes in space.

National launch system overview with focus on cargo transfer vehicle

As a result of the Augustine Committee's recommendation to the National Space Council, NASA, and the DOD have embarked on a joint program to provide the nation with a new capability for transporting payloads into space. The National Launch System (NLS) consists of a family of modular launch vehicles, combining elements of current launchers (Titan and Shuttle) with newly developed components. This family consists of (1) NLS-1 (a vehicle capable of delivering 80 k to SSF), (2) NLS-2 (a vehicle capable of delivering 50k to LEO), and (3) NLS-3 (a vehicle capable of delivering 20 k to LEO). Management of the program is shared between the two agencies with a Joint Program Office carrying out the level 2 management and integration function while both the NASA and Air Force field organizations are charged with the various development and operational responsibilities.

NASP - Focus on technology

The major changes in the NASP program caused mostly by budget pressures are described and current technology developments are highlighted. Particular attention is given to the program funding, vehicle and engine design, and the technology program. It is concluded that the success of the X-30 vehicle design depends on the success of the technology development effort. The major accomplishments of the NASP technology program include the T-5 Shock Tunnel at California Institute of Technology and Mach 16 injection and mixing experiments conducted in this facility; the low speed component integration rig which provide data on engine operation from static conditions to Mach 3.5; the module to module interaction test which provided data on the effects of inlet unstart in one engine module on an adjacent module at Mach 4.3; and the direct-connect module used for fuel injection and mixing studies at Mach 6-8.
