Toward the application of the Kalman filter to regional open ocean modeling

A partial differential equation model is defined for ocean meteorological prediction and synoptic analysis. The Kalman filter used for data assimilation is described and applied to the one-dimensional linear barotropic quasi-geostrophic model with periodic and open boundary conditions. The model accounts for eddy scale dynamics in the ocean. The assumptions made in the forecast model are discussed, along with comparisons of the error variances expected with the filter and from an objective analysis method. The effectiveness of the Kalman filter is demonstrated and subsequent efforts to extend the filter to two dimensions are indicated.

A geometric approach to the synthesis of failure detection filters

A geometric formulation of Beard's failure detection filter problem is stated using the concepts of (C, A)-invariant and unobservability subspaces. The notions of output separable and mutually detectable families of subspaces introduced by Beard are also clarified. It is shown that mutual detectability is a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a detection filter with arbitrarily assignable spectrum. Moreover, it is shown that the failure detection filter problem has a computationally simple solution when the failure events satisfy some mild restrictions. Finally, the complete duality between a generalization of Beard's detection filter problem and the restricted control decoupling problem is illustrated.

Applications of the magneto-optical filter to stellar pulsation measurements

A proposed method of employing the Cacciani magneto-optical filter (MOF) for stellar seismology studies is described. The method relies on the fact that the separation of the filter bandpasses in the MOF can be changed by varying the level of input power to the filter cells. With the use of a simple servosystem the bandpass of a MOF can be tuned to compensate for the changes in the radial velocity of a star introduced by the orbital motion of the earth. Such a tuned filter can then be used to record intensity fluctuations through the MOF bandpass over an extended period of time for each given star. Also, the use of a two cell version of the MOF makes it possible to alternately chop between the bandpass located in the stellar line wing and a second bandpass located in the stellar continuum. Rapid interchange between the two channels makes it possible for atmospheric-introduced noise to be removed from the time series.

Single-mode projection filters for identification and state estimation of flexible structures

Single-mode projection filters are developed for eigensystem parameter identification and state estimation from both analytical results and test data. Explicit formulations of these projection filters are derived using the pseudoinverse matrices of the controllabilty and observability matrices in the general sense. A global minimum optimization algorithm is developed to update the filter parameters by using the interval analysis method. Modal parameters can be identified and updated in the global sense within a specified region of parameters by passing the experimental data through the projection filters. For illustration of this new approach, a numerical example is shown by using a one-dimensional global optimization algorithm to estimate modal frequencies and damping.

Single-Mode Projection Filters for Modal Parameter Identification for Flexible Structures

Single-mode projection filters are developed for eigensystem parameter identification from both analytical results and test data. Explicit formulations of these projection filters are derived using the orthogonal matrices of the controllability and observability matrices in the general sense. A global minimum optimization algorithm is applied to update the filter parameters by using the interval analysis method. The updated modal parameters represent the characteristics of the test data. For illustration of this new approach, a numerical simulation for the MAST beam structure is shown by using a one-dimensional global optimization algorithm to identify modal frequencies and damping. Another numerical simulation of a ten-mode structure is also presented by using a two-dimensional global optimization algorithm to illustrate the feasibility of the new method. The projection filters are practical for parallel processing implementation.

Calibration of the thin film filters to be used on the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer Satellite

The methods of calibrating the filters used on the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) astronomical satellite are described. EUVE will conduct the first all-sky survey in the entire EUV band. The measurement of the filters' transmission properties from the soft X-ray to the far UV using a grazing incidence monochromator is discussed. A particle ingress test to determine the ability of the filters to inhibit energetic particles in earth orbit from entering the detector and increasing the background is described. Problems encountered in calibrating these four filters are also presented.

The sequential filter imaging radiometer (SFIR)- A new instrument configuration for earth observations

The sequential filter imaging radiometer (SFIR) concept is presented, contrasted with other sensor configurations, and its strengths and weaknesses discussed. In a pushbroom SFIR the optics images the scene onto a long, narrow area array. The length of the array defines the field of view. The spectral defining filters are sequentially placed over the full array, a sample of data for that band taken, and then the next filter is placed in front of the array. All filters are placed over the array in the time that it takes the image of the scene to advance the array width. Thus, the entire scene is observed in each band. Advantages of the SFIR are: spectral bands can be broad, narrow or overlap; it is easy to improve signal to noise ratio; and it is simple to make bands polarized. Its main disadvantage is that it requires more detectors than other instrument configurations.

Synthetic estimation filters for a control system

Hybrid optical correlators, which use spatial light modulators and solid state imagers to interface computers and optical Fourier correlators, will allow the rapid changing of filters and digital pre- or post-correlation processing in vision systems. However, optical correlation (particulary with phase-only filtration) is notoriously sensitive to mismatches of rotation and magnification between the reference image and the input image. Such sharpness is not always desirable if the correlation pattern is to be used in a control system. Two methods of conforming the response of an inherently sharp-response optical correlation to an in plane rotation between reference and object images are discussed. The objective is to condition the correlation for better suitability to a vision-controlled system. The first method is controlled convolutional blurring of a reference image followed by construction of a matched filter (perhaps implemented as a phase-only filter). An alternative is discussed in more detail: it is a synthesis from sharp filters, so weighted as to produce a specified off-center behavior.

Making A Circular-Harmonic Filter

Optical image-correlating system made rotationally invariant. Experiment shows circular-harmonic filter generated optically. Hologram made by phase-shifted-double-exposure procedure. Filter used in optical image-recognition system based on correlation between target (image to be recognized) and matched spatial filter. In addition to usual invariance under translation of target, circular harmonic filter invariant under rotation of target; peak intensity of illumination at origin of correlation plane does not vary when target rotated about optical axis.

High-order low-pass implicit tangent filters for use in finite area calculations

High-order implicit tangent filters are developed. The implicit tangent filters possess a highly selective amplitude response function and they can be applied relatively close to a boundary. Comparisons are made between the implicit and the traditional or explicit filters. Numerical simulations are performed to test the response in a limited-area model. An algorithm to maximize computing efficiency is presented. All tests indicate the desirability and utility of the implicit tangent filter.

Recursive least squares estimation and Kalman filtering by systolic arrays

One of the most promising new directions for high-throughput-rate problems is that based on systolic arrays. In this paper, using the matrix-decomposition approach, a systolic Kalman filter is formulated as a modified square-root information filter consisting of a whitening filter followed by a simple least-squares operation based on the systolic QR algorithm. By proper skewing of the input data, a fully pipelined time and measurement update systolic Kalman filter can be achieved with O(n squared) processing cells, resulting in a system throughput rate of O (n).

Applications of square-root information filtering and smoothing in spacecraft orbit determination

The JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) Orbit Determination Software System is a set of computer programs developed for the primary purpose of determining the flight path of deep-space mission spacecraft in NASA's Planetary Program and highly elliptical orbiting spacecraft in Earth orbit. The filtering processes available within the JPL Orbit Determination Software are discussed, and several examples are presented. In particular, solutions obtained by the Square Root Information Filter (SRIF) using Bierman's Estimation Subroutine Library (ESL) are discussed and compared with the solutions obtained by the singular value decomposition (SVD) technique. It is concluded that the SRIF filtering and smoothing algorithms are efficient and numerically stable for well-conditioned systems. The use of Bierman's ESL simplifies the task of maintaining the orbit determination software by providing efficient, tested filtering tools. For solving a large well-conditioned system (rank higher than 120), SRIF is approximately four times faster than SVD; however, for solving an ill-conditioned system, SVD is recommended.

Discrete filtering techniques applied to sequential GPS range measurements

The basic navigation solution is described for position and velocity based on range and delta range (Doppler) measurements from NAVSTAR Global Positioning System satellites. The application of discrete filtering techniques is examined to reduce the white noise distortions on the sequential range measurements. A second order (position and velocity states) Kalman filter is implemented to obtain smoothed estimates of range by filtering the dynamics of the signal from each satellite separately. Test results using a simulated GPS receiver show a steady-state noise reduction, the input noise variance divided by the output noise variance, of a factor of four. Recommendations for further noise reduction based on higher order Kalman filters or additional delta range measurements are included.

Kalman filter based range estimation for autonomous navigation using imaging sensors

Rotorcraft operating in high-threat environments fly close to the surface of the earth to utilize surrounding terrain, vegetation, or man-made objects to minimize the risk of being detected by the enemy. Two basic requirements for obstacle avoidance are detection and range estimation of the object from the current rotorcraft position. There are many approaches to the estimation of range using a sequence of images. The approach used in this analysis differes from previous methods in two significant ways: an attempt is not made to estimate the rotorcraft's motion from the images; and the interest lies in recursive algorithms. The rotorcraft parameters are assumed to be computed using an onboard inertial navigation system. Given a sequence of images, using image-object differential equations, a Kalman filter (Sridhar and Phatak, 1988) can be used to estimate both the relative coordinates and the earth coordinates of the objects on the ground. The Kalman filter can also be used in a predictive mode to track features in the images, leading to a significant reduction of search effort in the feature extraction step of the algorithm. The purpose is to summarize early results obtained in extending the Kalman filter for use with actual image sequences. The experience gained from the application of this algorithm to real images is very valuable and is a necessary step before proceeding to the estimation of range during low-altitude curvilinear flight. A simple recursive method is presented to estimate range to objects using a sequence of images. The method produces good range estimates using real images in a laboratory set up and needs to be evaluated further using several different image sequences to test its robustness. The feature generation part of the algorithm requires further refinement on the strategies to limit the number of features (Sridhar and Phatak, 1989). The extension of the work reported here to curvilinear flight may require the use of the extended Kalman filter.

Experimental verification of modified synthetic discriminant function filters for rotation invariance

Experimental results are presented which demonstrate that effective binary synthetic discriminant functions (SDFs) can be constructed if the binary nature of the filter modulation is included in SDF synthesis. It is also shown that the iterative procedure needed to produce the SDF is well performed on the optical correlator, as opposed to off-line computation. Binary SDF filters have been demonstrated which produce approximately equal correlation peaks over in-plane rotation ranges up to 75 deg and out-of-plane rotation ranges up to 60 deg. This technique, combined with the translational position invariance of optical filters, allows a single filter to track a Shuttle Orbiter as it moves along a curved path across the input field.
