A Spatiotemporal Sequence Forecasting Platform to Advance the Prediction of Changing Spatiotemporal Patterns of CO 2 Concentration by Incorporating Human Activity and Hydrological Extremes

Focal Areas (2): Predictive modeling using AI techniques and AI-derived model components. It describes the use of AI and other tools to design a prediction system comprising a hierarchy of models. Specifically, this white paper focuses on the development of a collaborative deep learning platform for evaluating and predicting spatiotemporal relationships between the hydrological and carbon cycles and includes capabilities for considering biogenic and anthropogenic inputs to these systems.

Process-based Neural Network to Forecast Vegetation Dynamics

This white paper calls for an AI-based emulator of DOE’s dynamic vegetation model that is computationally efficient and accommodates/parameterizes the governing processes built in the model. This AI-based emulator is needed for model calibration, sensitivity analysis, prediction, uncertainty quantification, and decision making. This AI-based emulator will incorporate physics and biological information in the form of conservation laws and constitutive relationships.

COVID-19: Spatiotemporal social data analytics and machine learning for pandemic exploration and forecasting

This task focused on developing a preliminary approach to use machine learning (ML) to explore the relationship between county-level societal variables and COVID-19 parameters, including COVID-19 cases rates and counts and COVID-19 death rates and counts. The objective was to develop and test a prototype approach for linking COVID-19 and county-level data. The task focused on enhancing and applying existing LANL ML techniques to COVID-19. Our novel ML methods have been a subject of a recently approved U.S. patent. The codes based on these methods are already open-source released. Our ML tools (NMFk/NTFk) are applied to extract hidden features (signals, waves) in the analyzed datasets and automatically identify their optimal number. The features are extracted by identifying counties that have similarities between the county-level societal variables and the COVID-19 parameters. These demonstration analyses will facilitate the ongoing pandemic simulations and predictions performed by Los Alamos other institutions, as well as lay the groundwork for future work.

Forecasting Marine Sediment Properties with Geospatial Machine Learning

Using a combination of geospatial machine learning prediction and sediment thermodynamic/physical modeling, we have developed a novel software workflow to create probabilistic maps of geoacoustic and geomechanical sediment properties of the global seabed. This new technique for producing reliable estimates of seafloor properties can better support Naval operations relying on sonar performance and seabed strength, can constrain models of shallow tomographic structure important for nuclear treaty compliance monitoring/detection, and can provide constraints on the distribution and inventory of shallow methane gas and gas hydrate accumulations on the continental shelves.

City-Wide Distributed Roof-Top Photovoltaic System Adoption Forecast, Grid Impact Simulation, & Neighborhood Microgrid Contribution Assessment

The adoption of distributed photovoltaic (PV) systems grew significantly in recent years. Market projections anticipate future growth for both residential and commercial installations. To understand grid impacts associated with distributed PV, useful hosting capacity studies require accurate representations of the spatial distribution of PV adoptions. Prediction of PV locations and numbers depends on median income data, building use zoning maps, and permit records to understand existing trends and predict future adoption rates and locations throughout an entire city. Using the PV adoption data, advanced and realistic simulations were performed to capture the distributed PV impacts on the grid. Also, using graph theory community detection hundreds of neighborhood microgrids can be discovered for the entire city by identifying densely connected loads that are sparsely connected to other communities. Then, based on the PV adoption predictions, this work identified the contribution of PV within each of the newly discovered graph theory defined microgrid communities.

Forecasting Distributed PV Adoption in Barranquilla, Colombia [Slides]

The objective of the dGen Colombia project is to provide projections to 2050 on distributed PV deployment by sector for a range of scenarios for Barranquilla, Colombia. NREL used the open-source Distributed Generation Market Demand Model (dGen) adapted for international projects for this analysis. As part of this analysis, technical potential, economic potential, and adoption projections of rooftop and groundmount PV for the city of Barranquilla are presented. Five main scenarios and their combinations were modeled to provide insight on the impact of increased demand from electric vehicles, air conditioning, and time-of-use tariffs.

USAID Colombia Young Leaders Workforce Training Program Action Plans: Forecasting Distributed Photovoltaic Adoption in Barranquilla, Colombia

As part of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)-National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Young Leaders Workforce Training Program in Colombia, the Association of Renewable Energies Colombia (SER) participants leveraged their training and professional experience to develop an action plan for modeling the projected adoption of distributed solar photovoltaics (PV) out to 2050 for the city of Barranquilla, Colombia. This case study provides an overview of the key activities and outcomes of the Distributed Generation Market Demand Model (dGen™) Colombia project.

Deep Learning Accelerated History Matching and Forecasting in Geologic CO 2 Sequestration [Slides]

We have successfully developed a predictive workflow for the Geologic CO 2 Sequestration using a deep learning model based on the Fourier Neural Operator. The workflow has high accuracy for predicting pressure & saturation during the injection and post-injection periods and has decent accuracy for predicting water and CO 2 production rates during injection period. It is necessary to train exclusive DNN models for pressure prediction in long term GCS, but for saturation prediction, we can use a single model to predict it.

Real Time and Forecasted DLR: Use Cases

This document contains two use cases for the utilization of dynamic line ratings in operational practices. These use cases were developed in support of the Transmission Optimization and Grid Enhancing Technology (TOGETS) task force aimed at facilitating the deployment of dynamic line rating and power flow technologies across the United States. The project included a demonstration of the technology on the Idaho National Laboratory system. The procurement documents, tests scripts, and field-validated results from multiple vendors will be published to improve industry’s familiarity with the products. Because of the urgency in performing this work and INL’s unique test setup, the Task Force identified a need for additional public information on the information exchanges required for operationalizing DLR (i.e. integrating DLR’s within actual system operations). As such, this use case document and an accompanying interoperability profile have been developed with input from the Task Force and various vendors whose systems would ultimately support the functionality described. The use case and interoperability profile support two distinct functionalities with different purposes.
