Advanced ETC/LSS computerized analytical models, CO2 concentration. Volume 1: Summary document

Computer simulations have been prepared for the concepts of C02 concentration which have the potential for maintaining a C02 partial pressure of 3.0 mmHg, or less, in a spacecraft environment. The simulations were performed using the G-189A Generalized Environmental Control computer program. In preparing the simulations, new subroutines to model the principal functional components for each concept were prepared and integrated into the existing program. Sample problems were run to demonstrate the methods of simulation and performance characteristics of the individual concepts. Comparison runs for each concept can be made for parametric values of cabin pressure, crew size, cabin air dry and wet bulb temperatures, and mission duration.

Space shuttle maintenance program planning document

A means for developing a space shuttle maintenance program which will be acceptable to the development centers, the operators (KSC and AF), and the manufacturer is presented. The general organization and decision processes for determining the essential scheduled maintenance requirements for the space shuttle orbiter are outlined. The development of initial scheduled maintenance programs is discussed. The remaining maintenance, that is non-scheduled or non-routine maintenance, is directed by the findings of the scheduled maintenance program and the normal operation of the shuttle. The remaining maintenance consists of maintenance actions to correct discrepancies noted during scheduled maintenance tasks, nonscheduled maintenance, normal operation, or condition monitoring.

Design improvement, qualification testing, purge and vent investigation, fabrication, and documentation of a GAC-9 insulation system

Results of the research and development program to determine the purge and vent characteristics of the GAC-9 insulation system are summarized. The work scope comprised: (1) literature survey; (2) design improvement and insulation effort; (3) testing; and (4) evaluation of test results. Program objectives to be realized are: (1) definition of purge gas flow characteristics of the GAC-9 insulation system through laboratory measurements; and (2) demonstration of insulation effectiveness as a system for prelaunch purging and launch venting of the 76-cm diameter calorimeter, which is a subscale model simulating a realistic type of GAC-9 insulation application.

Space shuttle guidance, navigation and control equation document no. 4: Precision state and filter weighting matrix extrapolation

The Precision State and Filter Weighting Matrix Extrapolation Routine is described which provides the capability to extrapolate any spacecraft geocentric state vector either backwards or forwards in time through a force field consisting of the earth's primary central-force gravitational attraction and a superimposed perturbing acceleration. The routine also provides the capability of extrapolating the filter-weighting matrix along the precision trajectory. This matrix is a square root form of the error covariance matrix and contains statistical information relative to the accuracies of the state vectors and certain other optionally estimated quantities. The routine is a cooled algorithm for the numerical solution of modified forms of the basic differential equations which are satisfied by the geocentric state vector of the spacecraft's center of mass and by the filter-weighting matrix.

Space shuttle guidance, navigation and control equation document no. 19: Prelaunch alignment and platform compensation

The prelaunch-alignment program which aligns the stable platform to some desired orientation with respect to the local navigation reference frame is discussed. The alignment progresses in three distinct phases: coarse aligning, leveling, and gyrocompassing. While the program is in the leveling or gyrocompassing phase, a new launch azimuth may be specified without reinitiating the program. At liftoff, control is passed to a navigation monitor/control program. A description of the stable-platform-compensation program is included. The programs and equations given are similar to those used for Apollo.

Vibration computer programs E13101, E13102, E13104, and E13112 and application to the NERVA program. Project 187: Methodology documentation

Programs for the analyses of the free or forced, undamped vibrations of one or two elastically-coupled lumped parameter teams are presented. Bearing nonlinearities, casing and rotor distributed mass and elasticity, rotor imbalance, forcing functions, gyroscopic moments, rotary inertia, and shear and flexural deformations are all included in the system dynamics analysis. All bearings have nonlinear load displacement characteristics, the solution is achieved by iteration. Rotor imbalances allowed by such considerations as pilot tolerances and runouts as well as bearing clearances (allowing concail or cylindrical whirl) determine the forcing function magnitudes. The computer programs first obtain a solution wherein the bearings are treated as linear springs of given spring rates. Then, based upon the computed bearing reactions, new spring rates are predicted and another solution of the modified system is made. The iteration is continued until the changes to bearing spring rates and bearing reactions become negligibly small.

Space shuttle GN and C equation document no. 20: Fine alignment gyro torquing angles

The procedure for aligning the inertial reference unit of the space shuttle by celestial references is discussed. The gyro torquing angles required to go from the present stable member to the desired stable member are determined. The inputs are the transformation matrix from the reference to the desired stable member coordinates and the unit vectors to the two target stars in both the reference and present stable member coordinates. The equations involved in establishing the reference are developed.

Space shuttle GN and C equation document no. 22: Approach guidance

The approach guidance routine for taking the space shuttle orbiter vehicle from the end of the entry phase altitude of approximately 100,000 feet to the start of the terminal guidance phase is presented. The guidance routine consists of six modes: (1) acquisition, (2) energy dissipation, (3) turn in, (4) initial approach, (5) heading alignment, and (6) final approach. Diagrams of the flight path for the various modes are included. Equations of motion governing the performance of the vehicle during each mode are developed.

Space shuttle GN and C equation document no. 23: Energy dissipation rate guidance for approach phase

The approach guidance routine for taking the space shuttle orbiter from the entry phase of approximately 100,000 feet to the start of the final landing maneuver is discussed. The approach guidance system is a closed feedback loop scheme. The vehicle energy is managed by controlling the rate at which energy is dissipated during a straight in approach. The spacecraft performance during each segment of the approach flight is analyzed. Equations of motion are developed to describe the spacecraft guidance and flight path.

NASA automatic system for computer program documentation, volume 2

The DYNASOR 2 program is used for the dynamic nonlinear analysis of shells of revolution. The equations of motion of the shell are solved using Houbolt's numerical procedure. The displacements and stress resultants are determined for both symmetrical and asymmetrical loading conditions. Asymmetrical dynamic buckling can be investigated. Solutions can be obtained for highly nonlinear problems utilizing as many as five of the harmonics generated by SAMMSOR program. A restart capability allows the user to restart the program at a specified time. For Vol. 1, see N73-22129.
