Earth observations during Space Shuttle flight STS-29 - Discovery's voyage to the earth

The environmental, geologic, meteorologic, and oceanographic phenomena documented by earth photography during the Space Shuttle STS-29 mission are reviewed. A map of the nadir point positions of earth-viewing photographs from the mission is given and color photographs of various regions are presented. The mission photographs include atmospheric dust and smoke over parts of Africa and Asia, Sahelian water sites, center pivot irrigation fields in the Middle East, urban smog over Mexico City, isolated burning in the Bolivian Amazon, and various ocean features and cloud formations.

Discovery of high-ionization far-ultraviolet line emission from the interstellar medium

Diffuse, highly ionized line emission from the 1550 lines of C IV and the 1663 lines of O II was discovered on Space Shuttle mission 61-C. The emission-lines ratios are consistent with a single temperature in most directions, although there is some evidence that the emission results from gas with a nonequilibrium ionization balance and a distribution of temperatures. It is concluded that the observation of UV emission is consistent only with a galactic fountain model with a fountain having a mass flux of 6-25 solar mass/yr and a luminosity of (2.5-13) X 10 to the 40th ergs/s.

Discovery of a cyclotron absorption line in the spectrum of the binary X-ray pulsar 4U 1538 - 52 observed by Ginga

A cyclotron absorption line near 20 keV has been found in the spectrum of the massive eclipsing binary X-ray pulsar 4U 1538 - 52 in observations with the Ginga observatory. The line is detected throughout the 529 s pulse cycle with a variable equivalent width that has its maximum value during the smaller peak of the two-peak pulse profile. It is found that the profile of the pulse and the phase-dependence of the cyclotron line can be explained qualitatively by a pulsar model based on recent theoretical results on the properties of pencil beams emitted by accretion-heated slabs of magnetized plasma at the magnetic poles of a neutron star. The indicated field at the surface of the neutron star is 1.7 (1 + z) x 10 to the 12th G, where z is the gravitational redshift.

Discovery of molecular hydrogen fluorescence in the diffuse interstellar medium

The first detection of molecular hydrogen fluorescence in the diffuse interstellar medium is reported. Using the Berkeley UVX Shuttle Spectrometer, H2 Lyman band fluorescence has been observed in four directions, each with high significance. Molecular hydrogen fluorescence is detected in all directions that have previously been found to contain significant CO emission. A simple equilibrium model has been developed that includes attenuation of the incident UV radiation field by H2 line and dust continuum absorption. Evidence is found that the gas in the CO emission portions of the clouds may be clumpy, with a filling factor less than 0.2 and an average density greater than 30/cu cm in most cases.

Discovery of five pre-main-sequence binaries in Taurus

The progress of an infrared K band lunar occultation search for binaries among premain-sequence stars is reported. From the fall of 1986 to the fall of 1989, 13 objects have been observed, all in the Taurus star-forming region. Five new binaries have been discovered: DF Tau, DI Tau, FS Tau (Haro 6-5) A, FV Tau (Haro 6-8), and FW Tau, with projected separations ranging from 0.01 to 0.57 arcsec. Including results reported previously, a total of 31 objects, 21 in Taurus and 10 in Ophiuchus, have been surveyed and nine double systems have been found. The detected binary frequency (0.29) seems consistent with that of the solar-type main-sequence field stars.

The discovery of a highly polarized bipolar nebula

During a search for the optical counterparts of IRAS sources whose flux peaks at 25 microns, a small faint bipolar nebula was discovered in Monoceros at the position of IRAS 07131-0147. The CCD images display the object's considerable structure. The central star seems relatively free of closeby nebulosity: the two lobes have a bow-tie structure with those parts nearest to the star consisting of series of small knots. The outer parts of the lobes seem to be made up of filaments streaming away from knots. On the basis of its optical spectrum, the central star was classified as a M5-6 giant. In the IRAS color classification scheme of Van der Veen and Habing (1988), the central star is VIb which indicates that there are distinct hot and cold components of circumstellar dust and that the mass loss process may have temporarily abated. Therefore, it is proposed that the object is in the post main sequence stage of evolution and is a protoplanetary nebulae. Young protoplanetary nebulae have totally obscured central stars illuminating reflective lobes whereas older ones such as M2-9 have lobes seen in emission from gas ionized by the central hot star which is clearly visible. Since the central object of IRAS07131-0147 is a relatively unobscured late type star and the lobes are seen only by reflection, it is suggested that this nebula is a protoplanetary nebula in an evolutionary stage intermediate between that of CRL2688 and M2-9.

On prediction and discovery of lunar ores

Sampling of lunar material and remote geochemical, mineralogical, and photogeologic sensing of the lunar surface, while meager, provide first-cut information about lunar composition and geochemical separation processes. Knowledge of elemental abundances in known lunar materials indicates which common lunar materials might serve as ores if there is economic demand and if economical extraction processes can be developed, remote sensing can be used to extend the understanding of the Moon's major geochemical separations and to locate potential ore bodies. Observed geochemical processes might lead to ores of less abundant elements under extreme local conditions.

The decade of discovery in astronomy and astrophysics

A survey of astronomy and astrophysics in the 1990s is presented and a prioritized agenda is offered for space- and ground-based research into the 21st century. In addition to proposing new telescopes for ground and space, the research infrastructure is discussed. The urgent need is emphasized for increased support of individual investigators, for appropriate maintenance and refurbishment of existing facilities, and for a balanced program of space astronomy. The scientific and the technical opportunities of the 1990s are summarized and the technological development is described needed for instruments to be built in the first years of the next century. Also addressed is the suitability of the Moon as an observation site.

Triton's geyser-like plumes - Discovery and basic characterization

One model for the mechanism driving the plumes of the four active geyser-like eruptions observed by Voyager 2 on Triton is a heating up of nitrogen ice in a subsurface greenhouse environment, where nitrogen gas pressurized by solar heating explosively vents to the surface carrying clouds of ice and dark particles into the atmosphere. A temperature increase of less than 4 K above the ambient surface value of 38 + or - 3 K suffices to drive the plumes to 8-km altitude. Each eruption may last a year or more, over the course of which 0.1 cu km of ice is sublimed.

Discovery of hotspots on Io using disk-resolved infrared imaging

First results are presented using two new techniques for ground-based observation of Io's hotspots. An IR array camera was used to obtain direct IR images of Io with resolution better than 0.5 arcsec, so that more than one hotspot is seen on Io in Jupiter eclipse. The camera was also used to make the first observations of the Jupiter occultation of the hotspots. These new techniques have revealed and located at least three hotspots and will now permit routine ground-based monitoring of the locations, temperatures, and sizes of multiple hotspots on Io.

Discovery of a Doppler-limited CO line in the upper mesosphere of Venus - A new dynamical probe

The presence of CO in the upper atmosphere of Venus is a consequence of the photochemistry of CO2, the dominant atmospheric constituent. In December 1989 the J = 1-2 transition of CO was observed at 230 GHz. In addition to the broad absorption line first reported by Kakar et al. (1976), a narrow absorption feature at the center of the line due to upper mesospheric CO, where the temperature profile starts to exhibit diurnal variation with altitude. The narrow feature is approximately 600 kHz wide and is predominantly Doppler-broadened. The Doppler core provides a new means of measuring wind velocities at these altitudes in the atmosphere of Venus. Detection of small Doppler shifts in the line core can in principle be used to measure winds with an accuracy of 10 m/s. Results are presently limited by the 17 kHz uncertainty in the measured rest frequency, corresponding to a systematic error in wind velocity up to 22 m/s, and the absence of laboratory measurements of the pressure shift in CO by CO2.

Discovery of a Ly-alpha galaxy near a damped Ly-alpha absorber at z = 2.3

The detection of a galaxy associated with the damped Ly-alpha absorbing cloud seen at z = 2.309 toward the QSO PHL 957 is reported. In addition to a strong but narrow Ly-alpha emission line and weaker C IV and He II lines, the object shows continuum at V about 24, with a slope rising slightly toward the red. This is similar to what is seen in high-redshift radio galaxies, but this galaxy does not correspond to any known radio source. The detected emission lines and continuum are most easily interpreted as light from hot, recently formed stars, implying a sizable star formation rate and a scarcity of dust. The spatial correlation of the absorbing cloud and the companion galaxy supports the interpretation of damped Ly-alpha clouds as objects fundamentally different from the lower column density Ly-alpha forest clouds, which show weak or no clustering.

The discovery of a long H I plume near the peculiar galaxy NGC 2782 (ARP 215)

The peculiar starburst galaxy NGC 2782 (Arp 215) is mapped in the 21-cm H I line using the VLA, and a massive H I plume extending about 5 arcmin toward the northwest is discovered which contains 1.4 x 10 to the 9th solar mass of atomic hydrogen (about 40 percent of the total H I mass of the system). There is also a shorter H I structure extending toward the east, which contains 6.6 x 10 to the 8th solar mass of H I. In the Arp Atlas photograph, NGC 2782 has a disturbed body with bright arcs, possibly ripples, throughout the disk, and a pronounced stellar tail extending 2.7 arcmin toward the east. The eastern H I structure is associated with the beginning of this stellar tail. PDS scanning of the Palomar plates in the vicinity of NGC 2782 reveals a low surface-brightness counterpart to the long HI plume in the northwest. The most likely formation scenario for NGC 2782 is a merger, possibly of unequal mass galaxies, where at least one of the galaxies is gas rich.

Discovery of a fast radiative shock wave in the Cygnus Loop using the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope

Observations of the far-ultraviolet spectrum of a bright radiative filament on the eastern edge of the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant are described which were made through the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope aboard the Astro-1 Space Shuttle mission in December 1990. Observations include strong emission lines of C III 977, N III 991, and O VI 032, 1038 and many fainter lines. A comparison of this spectrum with shock model calculations indicates that the emission at this position in the Cygnus Loop is dominated by 170 km/s shock wave.
