Design and construction of a Faraday cup for measurement of small electronic currents

The design of a device to measure and integrate very small currents generated by the impact of a charged particle beam upon a Faraday cut is described. The main component is a graphite block capable of stopping practically all the incident changes. The associated electronic apparatus required to measure better than 10/13 ampere with a precision of 10/0 is described.

Simultaneous particle and field observations of field-aligned currents

Simultaneous measurements of low energy precipitating electrons and magnetic fluctuations from the low altitude polar orbiting satellite OGO-4 have been compared. Analysis of the two sets of experimental data for isolated events led to the classification of high latitude field-aligned currents as purely temporal or purely spatial variations. Magnetic field disturbances calculated using these simple current models and the measured particle fluxes were in good agreement with measured field values. While fluxes of greater than 1 keV electrons are detected primarily on the nightside, magnetometer disturbances indicative of field-aligned currents were seen at all local times, both in the visual auroral regions and dayside polar cusp. Thus electrons with energies less than approximately 1 keV are the prime charge carriers in high latitude dayside field-aligned currents. The satellite measurements are in good agreement with previously measured field-aligned current values and with values predicted from several models involving magnetospheric field-aligned currents.

Observation and differential cross section measurement of neutral current DIS events with an empty hemisphere in the Breit frame

The Breit frame provides a natural frame to analyze lepton–proton scattering events. In this reference frame, the parton model hard interactions between a quark and an exchanged boson defines the coordinate system such that the struck quark is back-scattered along the virtual photon momentum direction. In Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), higher order perturbative or non-perturbative effects can change this picture drastically. As Bjorken-x decreases below one half, a rather peculiar event signature is predicted with increasing probability, where no radiation is present in one of the two Breit-frame hemispheres and all emissions are to be found in the other hemisphere. At higher orders in $\alpha$ s or in the presence of soft QCD effects, predictions of the rate of these events are far from trivial, and that motivates measurements with real data. We report on the first observation of the empty current hemisphere events in electron–proton collisions at the HERA collider using data recorded with the H1 detector at a center-of-mass energy of 319 GeV. The fraction of inclusive neutral-current DIS events with an empty hemisphere is found to be 0.0112 ± 3.9% stat ± 4.5% syst ± 1.6% mod in the selected kinematic region of 150 < Q 2 < 1500 GeV 2 and inelasticity 0.14 < y < 0.7. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 351.1 pb -1 , sufficient to enable differential cross section measurements of these events. The results show an enhanced discriminating power at lower Bjorken-x among different Monte Carlo event generator predictions.

First Measurement of Charged Current Muon Neutrino-Induced Kaon Production on Argon

The Micro Booster Neutrino Experiment (MicroBooNE) is a liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) neutrino detector with an 85-ton active volume, located on-axis to the Booster Neutrino Beamline (BNB) at Fermilab. The detector is exposed to a neutrino flux with average energy of 800 MeV and was designed to study neutrino interactions on argon, particularly in the 1 GeV energy range. Among its main goals is the investigation of neutrino-induced strange particle production at final-state, with a specific interest on charged kaons ($K^{+}$). The understanding of this neutrino interaction is crucial for refining background models in future nucleon decay searches on others LArTPCs experiments such as the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). Additionally, the techniques developed for the identification of neutrino-induced $K^{+}$ will contribute to improving particle identification methods in LArTPC-based detectors. This thesis is reporting the first-ever measurement of the flux-integrated cross section for charged-current muon neutrino-induced $K^{+}$ production on argon, determined to be $7.93 \pm 3.27(\text{stat.}) \pm 2.92(\text{syst.}) \times 10^{-42}$ cm$^2$/nucleon, based on the MicroBooNE dataset corresponding to $6.88 \times 10^{20}$ Protons on Target (POT).

Electric Motor Noise from Small Quadcopters: Part II - Source Characteristics

The increased interest in electric motors for aircraft propulsion systems has driven interest in quantifying the contribution of electric motor noise to the overall sound levels and possibly human annoyance of the propulsion system. This work presents acoustic measurements of electric motors used for small quadcopters to quantify the sound produced by a number of outrunner motors with different types of controllers. Results are presented for loaded and unloaded motors as well as installed and uninstalled configurations. Motor resonance frequencies were measured and computed. Current probe measurements showed significant harmonic content in the supply current from the controllers for both the conventional and sinewave controllers. Acoustic results showed motor noise is typically radiated at frequencies near that for azimuthal vibration mode number 2 of the rotor which occurs at roughly 5000 Hz. Electric motor noise was evident in the spectra produced by many of the motor-controller combinations for motors loaded with propellers with levels often greater than those for the motor alone due to increases in the stator magnetic flux density with increased current. An installed quadcopter configuration produced increases in acoustic radiation over that of the uninstalled motor in a frequency range near the 1200 Hz azimuthal vibration mode 1 of the rotor.

Inferring global characteristics of current sheet from local measurements

A new procedure to extract global characteristics of a current sheet based on local measurements of magnetic field, plasma, and current density from a single spacecraft is described. By adopting suitable current density profiles, this method permits an estimate of the following parameters: (1) the asymptotic magnetic field strength outside the current sheet, (2) the north-south thickness of the current sheet, (3) the spacecraft distance from the center of the current sheet, (4) the magnetic field line curvature at the center of the current sheet, (5) the volume current density at the center of the current sheet, (6) the integrated current density across the thickness of the current sheet, and (7) the kappa parameter used by many researchers in the study of particle orbits in a current sheet geometry.

Hadron Production Measurements at NA61/SHINE

In current day measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters with accelerator-based neutrino experiments, neutrino flux uncertainties are frequently a leading systematic uncertainty. Precise measurements of primary and secondary hadron production processes for neutrino beams, performed by the NA61/SHINE experiment at CERN's Super Proton Synchrotron, can significantly constrain these uncertainties; the T2K experiment has incorporated previous NA61/SHINE measurements for a substantial flux uncertainty reduction. For these measurements, NA61/SHINE analyzes the interactions of charged hadrons with materials relevant to long-baseline experiments, measuring the differential cross sections of produced particles. This poster will review the NA61/SHINE experiment, including recent, ongoing, and future measurements with thin and replica targets, such as proton-carbon interactions at 31 GeV/c and 120 GeV/c for the T2K and DUNE experiments, respectively.

Vertical neutral wind in the equatorial F-region deduced from electric field and ion density measurements

Direct current (DC) electric field and ion density measurements near density depletion regions (that is, equatorial plasma bubbles) are used to estimate the vertical neutral wind speed. The measured zonal electric field in a series of density depletions crossed by the San Marco D satellite at 01.47-01.52 Universal Time (UT) on 25 October 1988, can be explained if a downward neutral wind of 15-30 m/s exists. Simultaneously, the F-region plasma was moving downward at a speed of 30-50 m/s. These events appear in the local time sector of 23.00-23.15 in which strong downward neutral winds may occur. Indeed, airglow measurements suggest that downward neutral velocities of 25-50 m/s are possible at time near midnight in the equatorial F-region.

Multi-Differential Charged Current 𝝂_𝝁− Argon Cross Section without Pions in the Final State Measurement in MicroBooNE , and Current Status of Simultaneous Cross Section Extraction with ANNIE

MicroBooNE, an 85-tonne liquid argon time projection chamber detector is on-axis to the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. MicroBooNE is elucidating neutrino interactions with argon through cross-section measurements to refine interaction models and reduce uncertainties. In this poster, we present recent published single and double multi-differential charged current (CC) cross section with zero pions in the final state (CC-0 ) as a function of muon momentum ( ) and the cosine of the muon angle ( ). We present the details of the event selection and the extraction of 1D and 2D cross sections. We further report on the status of a simultaneous cross-section extraction conducted in conjunction with the ANNIE experiment, which employs a Gd-H O target and operates on the same BNB beamline. This joint measurement enables a precision test of nuclear A-dependence between oxygen and argon, with shared flux and cross-section model correlations leading to the cancellation of systematic uncertainties.

Measurement of Neutral-Current $\pi^0$ Cross Section in MicroBooNE using Wire-Cell Reconstruction

This note presents the extraction of flux-averaged total and differential neutral-current $π^0$ cross section measurements, based on the Wiener-SVD unfolding method, using the MicroBooNE Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC) and the Wire-Cell reconstruction paradigm. This measurement is critical for single-photon searches as neutral-current pion production represents one of the largest sources of background. We report the results for an exposure corresponding to 5.327 × 10 19 protons-on-target (POT).

Auroral particle precipitation and Birkeland currents

Correlated measurements that provide information on Birkeland (field aligned) currents are reviewed. Because of the obvious importance of field-aligned electric fields with regard to Birkeland currents, the last section of the paper is devoted to a presentation of recent data on the observations of field-aligned auroral electron fluxes and monoenergetic peaks in the spectrum. Experimental data cannot yet define the overall magnetospheric pattern of the Birkeland current system. The largest body of data regarding these currents comes from polar-orbiting satellites. These data indicate that current sheets are associated with auroral displays and that field-aligned electron fluxes on the order of 1-keV energy are significant charge carriers for the conventional current out of the atmosphere. Rocket observations verify that electrons responsible for the production of auroral forms carry a significant fraction of the current necessary to produce local magnetic effects that require Birkeland currents for their explanations.

Mid- and Long-IR Broadband Quantum Well Photodetector

A single-stack broadband quantum well infrared photodetector (QWIP) has been developed that consists of stacked layers of GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells with absorption peaks centered at various wavelengths spanning across the 9- to-11- m spectral regions. The correct design of broadband QWIPs was a critical step in this task because the earlier implementation of broadband QWIPs suffered from a tuning of spectral response curve with an applied bias. Here, a new QWIP design has been developed to overcome the spectral tuning with voltage that results from non-uniformity and bias variation of the electrical field across the detector stacks with different absorption wavelengths. In this design, a special effort has been made to avoid non-uniformity and bias tuning by changing the doping levels in detector stacks to compensate for variation of dark current generation rate across the stacks with different absorption wavelengths. Single-pixel photodetectors were grown, fabricated, and tested using this new design. The measured dark current is comparable with the dark measured current for single-color QWIP detectors with similar cutoff wavelength, thus indicating high material quality as well as absence of performance degradation resulting from broadband design. The measured spectra clearly demonstrate that the developed detectors cover the desired special range of 8 to 12 m. Moreover, the shape of the spectral curves does not change with applied biases, thus overcoming the problem plaguing previous designs of broadband QWIPs.

Comparing measurement of limiting current in block copolymer electrolytes as a function of salt concentration with theoretical predictions

Optimizing electrolyte performance is crucial for the widespread adoption of electrochemical energy storage. We demonstrate that limiting current provides a robust criterion for determining the optimum electrolyte. Experiments were conducted on rigid block copolymer electrolytes comprising mixtures of polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) copolymer (SEO) and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide salt (LiTFSI) over a salt concentration range from r av = 0.04 to r av = 0.20 (r av is the molar ratio of lithium ions to ethylene oxide). Here we show that the maximum limiting current density is 4.3 mA cm –2 at r av = 0.12. The dependence of limiting current on salt concentration is in good agreement with predictions from Newman's concentrated solution theory with no adjustable parameters.
