Critical configurations (determinantal loci) for range and range difference satellite networks

The observational modes of Geometric Satellite Geodesy are discussed. The geometrical analysis of the problem yielded a regression model for the adjustment of the observations along with a suitable and convenient metric for the least-squares criterion. The determinantal loci (critical configurations) for range networks are analyzed. An attempt is made to apply elements of the theory of variants for this purpose. The use of continuously measured range differences for loci determination is proposed.

Study of critical defects in ablative heat shield systems for the space shuttle

Experimental results are presented for a program conducted to determine the effects of fabrication-induced defects on the performance of an ablative heat shield material. Exposures representing a variety of space shuttle orbiter mission environments-humidity acoustics, hot vacuum and cold vacuum-culuminating in entry heating and transonic acoustics, were simulated on large panels containing intentional defects. Nondestructive methods for detecting the defects, were investigated. The baseline materials were two honeycomb-reinforced low density, silicone ablators, MG-36 and SS-41. Principal manufacturing-induced defects displaying a critical potential included: off-curing of the ablator, extreme low density, undercut (or crushed) honeycomb reinforcements, and poor wet-coating of honeycomb.

Discharge coefficient correlations for circular-arc venturi flowmeters at critical /sonic/ flow

Experimental data are analyzed to support theoretical predictions for discharge coefficients in circular-arc venturi flow meters operating in the critical sonic flow regime at throat Reynolds numbers above 150 thousand. The data tend to verify the predicted 0.25% decrease in the discharge coefficient during transition from a laminar to turbulent boundary layer. Four different test gases and three flow measurement facilities were used in the experiments with 17 venturis with throat sizes from 0.15 to 1.37 in. and Beta ratios ranging from 0.014 to 0.25. Recommendations are given as to how the effectiveness of future studies in the field could be improved.

Application of critical COD and plastic instability concepts to fracture of shells

The paper deals with the initiation, growth, and possible arrest of fracture in shell structures containing initial defects which may be approximated by an isolated part-through crack. The main study is restricted to the structures in which the net section of the shell wall around the defect zone is fully yielded. The problem is solved by using an 8th order shallow shell theory with a conventional plastic strip model to account for the plastic deformations. Using the critical COD or the plastic instability as fracture criterion, the results are applied to the fracture propagation and arrest in shells. The calculated results are then compared with those obtained from the experiments on zircaloy, aluminum, and steel pipes.

Balancing of high speed interconnect shafting for operation above multiple bending critical speeds

The present work first reviews the key elements of rotating system dynamics which are crucial to the control of lateral vibration levels for supercritical shafting of the type which is considered for use in advanced aircraft applications. Then the results of an analytical investigation of procedures for balancing flexible shafts designed for critical operation are discussed. Some of the conclusions made were: (1) even in undamped configuration, reasonably low vibration levels can be achieved through a sequential multiplane-multispeed balancing process; and (2) combination of analytical response and balancing prediction procedures yields a powerful tool for the dynamic analysis and design of advanced shaft-bearing systems.

Effects of background event rate and critical signal amplitude on vigilance performance

Subjects monitored a display consisting of the repetitive presentation of pairs of movements of a bar of light. A neutral background event, for which no overt response was required, was a double deflection of 24 mm. The critical signal for detection was a longer deflection in the second movement within an event. Detection probability was greater for incremental excursions of 33% relative to 8.3% of the base movement. This effect was enhanced twofold when the event rate in which the signals were embedded was 21 as compared to 6 events/min. The results are considered in terms of the elicited observing rate hypothesis proposed by Jerison (1970).

Flexible rotor balancing by the influence coefficient method: Multiple critical speeds with rigid or flexible supports

Experimental tests were conducted to demonstrate the ability of the influence coefficient method to achieve precise balance of flexible rotors of virtually any design for operation through virtually any speed range. Various practical aspects of flexible-rotor balancing were investigated. Tests were made on a laboratory quality machine having a 122 cm (48 in.) long rotor weighing 50 kg (110 lb) and covering a speed range up to 18000 rpm. The balancing method was in every instance effective, practical, and economical and permitted safe rotor operation over the full speed range covering four rotor bending critical speeds. Improved correction weight removal methods for rotor balancing were investigated. Material removal from a rotating disk was demonstrated through application of a commercially available laser.

On the magnon interaction in Haematite. 2: Magnon energy of the acoustical mode and magnetic critical fields

Previous spin wave theories of the antiferromagnet hematite were extended. The behavior of thermodynamic quantities around the Morin transition temperature was studied, and the latent heat of the Morin transition was calculated. The temperature dependence of the antiferromagnetic resonance frequency and the parallel and perpendicular critical spin-flop magnetic fields were calculated. It was found that the theory agrees well with experiment.

Langevin equation with stochastic damping - Possible application to critical binary fluid

We solve the familiar Langevin equation with stochastic damping to represent the motion of a Brownian particle in a fluctuating medium. A connection between the damping and the random driving forces is proposed which preserves quite generally the Einstein relation between the diffusion and mobility coefficients. We present an application to the case of a Brownian particle in a critical binary mixture.

Critical problems in establishing the morphology of substorms in space

A phenomenological model of the magnetospheric substorm has been developed which divides the substorm into three phases: a growth phase, an expansion phase, and a recovery phase. Current research is reviewed in the light of criticism of this model. The most important inadequacies of the model concern the fact that the tail lobe and the plasma sheet do not always react as single entities as previously supposed. Further research is needed on the problems of substorm variability, errors in onset time, the number of distinct spatial regions, and the dependence of magnetic activity on past history.

Contamination Control in Hybrid Microelectronic Modules. Part 1: Identification of Critical Process and Contaminants

Various hybrid processing steps, handling procedures, and materials are examined in an attempt to identify sources of contamination and to propose methods for the control of these contaminants. It is found that package sealing, assembly, and rework are especially susceptible to contamination. Moisture and loose particles are identified as the worst contaminants. The points at which contaminants are most likely to enter the hybrid package are also identified, and both general and specific methods for their detection and control are developed. In general, the most effective controls for contaminants are: clean working areas, visual inspection at each step of the process, and effective cleaning at critical process steps. Specific methods suggested include the detection of loose particles by a precap visual inspection, by preseal and post-seal electrical testing, and by a particle impact noise test. Moisture is best controlled by sealing all packages in a clean, dry, inert atmosphere after a thorough bake-out of all parts.

Investigation of Critical Burning of Fuel Droplets

An earlier analysis for the combustion response of a liquid monopropellant strand (hydrazine) was extended to consider individual droplets and sprays. While small drops gave low or negative response, large droplets provided response near unity at low frequencies, with the response declining at frequencies greater than the characteristic liquid phase frequency. Temperature gradients in the liquid phase resulted in response peaks greater than unity. A second response peak was found for large drops which corresponded to gas phase transient effects. Spray response was generally reduced from the response of the largest injected droplet, however, even a small percentage of large droplets can yield appreciable response. An apparatus was designed and fabricated to allow observation of bipropellant fuel spray combustion at elevated pressures. A locally homogeneous model was developed to describe this combustion process which allows for high pressure phenomena associated with the thermodynamic critical point.

New treatment of the critical argument in resonance problems

Traditional methods for isolating the critical argument in Hamiltonian mechanics involve the introduction of a special set of action variables which are both complicated in form and arbitrary in nature. The new variables are in general obscure in their interpretation. This paper introduces a new canonical system corresponding to the original one, but with one more degree of freedom, in which all the variables of the original Hamiltonian can be treated on the same footing. It appears to have significant advantages for machine calculations.

High stiffness seals for rotor critical speed control

An annular seal is analyzed in which the inlet clearance is larger than the outlet clearance; the flow path may be either stepped or tapered. This design produces radial stiffness 1.7 to 14 times that of a constant clearance seal having the same minimum clearance. When sealing high pressure fluids, such a seal improves rotor stability and can be used to shift troublesome critical speeds to a more suitable location.
