Impedance Modeling and Stability Analysis for the PLL-less and Voltage Sensor-less Grid-tied Converters

The newly developed control methodology, which omits the phase-locked loop (PLL) and voltage sensor, has garnered considerable attention for its rapid dynamic response and reduced hardware expenses. Nonetheless, its stability concerns have not yet been thoroughly scrutinized. In this paper, the impedance modeling of the PLL-less and voltage sensorless control strategy has been established. The impedance model has been contrasted with the traditional PLL-based control scheme. Our findings demonstrate that the PLL-less and voltage sensorless control approach lacks the negative resistance behavior that is frequently observed in the traditional scheme, which results in unstable operations. Furthermore, the role of virtual resistance has been examined. To substantiate the aforementioned findings, simulation results are presented.

Impedance Emulation Control of Wave Energy Converters

Modeling and control of wave energy conversion (WEC) systems for maximum power extraction is challenging due to complex multiphysics that include fluids, mechanics, and machine drives. To uncover an intuitive model that clearly depicts WEC system operation, we utilize a force-current equivalent circuit framework which then enables us to design an impedance emulation control strategy. To provide context for our framework, we focus on a standard reference model-3 (RM3) point absorber device coupled to a permanent magnet synchronous generator. After the proposed extremum seeking controller is computed, we experimentally validate its performance on a platform that consists of two back-to-back connected inverters that emulate the WEC system.

A graphical user interface platform to support power electronic converters and integrated systems

Power Electronic Systems have grown in size and complexity over the past years. Therefore, users require interfaces to properly configure, develop, and deploy these systems. This work presents a Graphical User Interface that dynamically adapts to the system and allows the user to control and monitor its operation. This GUI uses networked communication and open-source Python libraries to allow the user to interact with the system at its different hierarchical layers, as well as visualize the interconnection of the full system. This is demonstrated by showing the user interface applied to a megawatt class charging station that consists of various energy resources.

A Tradeoff Analysis of Series / Parallel Three-Phase Converter Topologies for Wireless Extreme Chargers

In this paper, extreme fast charging (XFC) technology is studied considering the charge rates of 300 kW for wireless power transfer (WPT) applications. Tradeoff analysis of series and parallel connection of three-phase WPT system are presented by comparisons of voltage and current stresses on power electronics active / passive components. In addition, star (Y) / delta (Δ) connection configurations for three-phase wireless power transfer coupling coils are analyzed with series and LCC resonant compensation circuits. The system series and parallel connection controllability is also reviewed considering voltage and current balance techniques with output control. In a conclusion of evaluation analysis, it is revealed that each component of 300 kW wireless charging network must be designed for high fast charging system and the overall system operation need to be strategically planned for high power charging and infrastructure deployment.

Multiagent-Based Dynamic Voltage Support of Power Converters During Fault Ride-Through

Reference point of applicability (RPA) is a predefined point in a distribution network that performance requirements shall apply. As RPA is not directly controlled by a dedicated distributed energy resource (DER), it requires an aggregate response of multiple DERs over a complex meshed network. Here, this article presents a multiagent-based distributed dynamic voltage support (DDVS) method for coordinated aggregate response of multiple DER units to support RPA voltage profile during and after fault ride-through. DDVS implements a multiagent-based leader target tracking scheme with velocity matching and flock centering features to avoid uncoordinated current injections of cooperative DERs. The DDVS is an event-based approach based on RPA requirements. Two-dimensional voltage support objective is handled: 1) coordinated positive sequence current injection for voltage magnitude boosting and 2) coordinated negative sequence current injection for unbalance voltage mitigation. The results demonstrate that the proposed DDVS algorithm addresses emerging coordinated DVS requirement of DERs.

Transient Simulations with a Large Penetration of Converter-Interfaced Generation: Scientific Computing Challenges and Opportunities

Current trends in energy systems point to renewable energy sources (RESs) and battery energy storage systems (BESSs) becoming prevalent in power system operations. As of writing this article, the United States has more than 37 GW of utility-scale solar capacity and an additional 112 GW under development. With the rapidly declining capital costs of many of these technologies, we can expect significant deployments in the coming years.
