Materials Engineering of Violin Soundboards by Stradivari and Guarneri

Abstract We investigated the material properties of Cremonese soundboards using a wide range of spectroscopic, microscopic, and chemical techniques. We found similar types of spruce in Cremonese soundboards as in modern instruments, but Cremonese spruces exhibit unnatural elemental compositions and oxidation patterns that suggest artificial manipulation. Combining analytical data and historical information, we may deduce the minerals being added and their potential functions—borax and metal sulfates for fungal suppression, table salt for moisture control, alum for molecular crosslinking, and potash or quicklime for alkaline treatment. The overall purpose may have been wood preservation or acoustic tuning. Hemicellulose fragmentation and altered cellulose nanostructures are observed in heavily treated Stradivari specimens, which show diminished second‐harmonic generation signals. Guarneri's practice of crosslinking wood fibers via aluminum coordination may also affect mechanical and acoustic properties. Our data suggest that old masters undertook materials engineering experiments to produce soundboards with unique properties.

Ultrafast Metal Electrodeposition Revealed by In Situ Optical Imaging and Theoretical Modeling towards Fast–Charging Zn Battery Chemistry

Metallic Zn is a preferred anode material for rechargeable aqueous batteries towards a smart grid and renewable energy storage. Importantly, understanding how the metal nucleates and grows at the aqueous Zn anode is a critical and challenging step to achieve full reversibility of Zn battery chemistry, especially under fast-charging conditions. Here, by combining in situ optical imaging and theoretical modeling, we uncover the critical parameters governing the electrodeposition stability of the metallic Zn electrode, that is, the competition among crystallographic thermodynamics, kinetics, and Zn 2+ -ion diffusion. Moreover, steady-state Zn metal plating/ stripping with Coulombic efficiency above 99 % is achieved at 10-100 mA cm -2 in a reasonably high concentration (3 M) ZnSO 4 electrolyte. Significantly, a long-term cycling-stable Zn metal electrode is realized with a depth of discharge of 66.7% under 50 mA cm -2 in both Zn || Zn symmetrical cells and MnO 2 || Zn full cells.

Peptoid-Directed Formation of Five-Fold Twinned Au Nanostars through Particle Attachment and Facet Stabilization

While bio-inspired synthesis offers great potential for controlling nucleation and growth of inorganic particles, precisely tuning biomolecule-particle interactions is a long-standing challenge. Herein, we used variations in peptoid sequence to manipulate peptoid-Au interaction, leading to synthesis of concave five-fold twinned, five-pointed Au nanostars via a process of repeated particle attachment and facet stabilization. Ex situ and liquid-phase TEM observations show that a balance between particle attachment biased to occur near the star points, preferential growth along the [100] direction, and stabilization of (111) facets is critical to forming star-shaped particles. Molecular simulations predict that interaction strengths between peptoids and distinct Au facets differ significantly and thus can alter attachment kinetics and surface energies to form the stars. This work provides new insights into how sequence-defined ligands affect particle growth to regulate crystal morphology.

Atomically Local Electric Field Induced Interface Water Reorientation for Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

The slow water dissociation process in alkaline electrolyte severely limits the kinetics of HER. The orientation of H 2 O is well known to affect the dissociation process, but H 2 O orientation is hard to control because of its random distribution. Herein, an atomically asymmetric local electric field was designed by IrRu dizygotic single-atom sites (IrRu DSACs) to tune the H 2 O adsorption configuration and orientation, thus optimizing its dissociation process. The electric field intensity of IrRu DSACs is over 4.00×10 10 N/C. The ab initio molecular dynamics simulations combined with in situ Raman spectroscopy analysis on the adsorption behavior of H 2 O show that the M–H bond length (M=active site) is shortened at the interface due to the strong local electric field gradient and the optimized water orientation promotes the dissociation process of interfacial water. This work provides a new way to explore the role of single atomic sites in alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction.

Preserving Structurally Labile Peptide Nanosheets After Molecular Functionalization of the Self-Assembling Peptides

A significant challenge in creating supramolecular materials is that conjugating molecular functionalities to building blocks often results in dissociation or undesired morphological transformation of their assemblies. Here we present a facile strategy to preserve structurally labile peptide assemblies after molecular modification of the self-assembling peptides. Sheet-forming peptides are designed to afford a staggered alignment with the segments bearing chemical modification sites protruding from the sheet surfaces. The staggered assembly allows for simultaneous separation of attached molecules from each other and from the underlying assembly motifs. Strikingly, using PEGs as the external molecules, PEG 400 - and PEG 700 -peptide conjugates directly self-associate into nanosheets with the PEG chains localized on the sheet surfaces. In contrast, the sheet formation based on in-register lateral packing of peptides does not recur upon the peptide PEGylation. This strategy allows for fabrication of densely modified assemblies with a variety of molecules, as demonstrated using biotin (hydrophobic molecule), c(RGDfK) (cyclic pentapeptide), and nucleic acid aptamer (negatively charged ssDNA). The staggered co-assembly also enables extended tunability of the amount/density of surface molecules, as exemplified by screening ligand-appended assemblies for cell targeting. In conclusion, this study paves the way for functionalization of historically challenging fragile assemblies while maintaining their overall morphology.

Symmetry‐Breaking Strategy Yields Dopant‐Free Small Molecule Hole Transport Materials for Inorganic Perovskite Solar Cells with 20.58% Efficiency and Outstanding Stability

Abstract Inorganic perovskites are known for their excellent photothermal stability; however, the photothermal stability of all‐inorganic n‐i‐p perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is compromised due to ion diffusion and free radical‐induced degradation caused by the use of doped spiro‐OMeTAD hole transport materials (HTMs). In this study, two isomeric donor–acceptor–donor (D–A–D) type small molecules, namely HBT and HiBT, were developed and used as dopant‐free HTMs, using 2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole or benzo[d][1,2,3]thiadiazole as acceptor moieties. The HiBT molecule, with its symmetry‐breaking features, exhibits a large dipole moment, enhanced coordination‐active sites, and a well‐aligned energy level structure, all of which contribute to passivating perovskite surface defects and improving free charge separation. As a result, inorganic CsPbI 3 PSCs with HiBT HTM achieved an impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 20.58%, the highest reported for dopant‐free HTM‐based inorganic PSCs. Moreover, the enhanced hydrophobic properties of HiBT molecules, coupled with their ability to passivate perovskite surface defects, contribute to significantly improved device stability. The unencapsulated devices based on HiBT HTM retained over 83% and 80% of their initial efficiency after being stored at 85 °C for 50 days and undergoing maximum power point (MPP) tracking at 85 °C for 1100 h, respectively. These results highlight that the symmetry‐breaking strategy is an exceptionally effective approach for designing efficient, dopant‐free small molecule HTMs, significantly contributing to both the high efficiency and enhanced stability of all‐inorganic PSCs.

Facet-Dependent Water Inhibition of Alkanol Dehydration on TiO2 via Distinct Water–Alkanol Complexes

Water is ubiquitous in biomass-derived feeds, yet its molecular impact on oxygen-elimination reactions remains poorly understood, particularly for catalysts exposing different facets. Here, we utilize well-defined TiO2 nanocrystals with dominant (101) and (001) facets to reveal a pronounced facet-dependent effect of water, where inhibition for dehydration of isopropanol (IPA) on the TiO2(001) surface is about four times more severe than TiO2(101). Through a combination of in situ solid state NMR, in situ infrared spectroscopy, kinetics studies, and theoretical calculations, we demonstrate that this disparity arises from the formation of distinct alkanol-water complex intermediates. On TiO2(001), IPA undergoes dissociative adsorption to form an isopropoxide-H2O complex that readily drives the surface into a complex-dominated regime. This pathway increases the activation barrier for C–H cleavage by 40 kJ mol-1 by inducing a disordered transition state. In contrast, TiO2(101) favors molecular IPA adsorption with weak hydrogen bonding to water, resulting in a smaller complex formation constant and a much smaller activation barrier increase (25 kJ mol-1). By quantitatively linking facet-dependent complex coverage to transition-state destabilization, this work moves beyond simple site-blocking models and provides a conceptual framework for designing catalysts that remain active in water-containing environments

Life-cycle analysis of sustainable aviation fuel production through catalytic hydrothermolysis

Catalytic hydrothermolysis (CH) is a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) pathway that has been recently approved for use in aircraft fuel production. In alignment with broader sustainable aviation goals, SAF production through CH requires a quantitative assessment of carbon intensity (CI) impacts. In this study, a current-day life-cycle analysis (LCA) was performed on SAF produced via CH to determine the CI. Various oily feedstocks were considered, including vegetable oils (soybean, carinata, camelina and canola) and low-burden oils and greases (corn oil, yellow grease and brown grease). Life-cycle inventory data were collected on all processes within the CH LCA boundary: feedstock cultivation and/or collection, preprocessing, hydrothermal cleanup and CH, biocrude refining, fuel transportation and end use through combustion. Baseline results show that the CH-produced SAF can be generated with CI reductions ranging from 48 to 82% compared with conventional jet fuel. Modest improvements to CI can be achieved through incremental changes to the brown grease CH process, such as relaxing the dewatering specification and implementing renewable natural gas and electricity, which could decrease the CI from 22.9 to 7.9 g CO 2 e/MJ. Total CH fuel production potential was also assessed on the basis of current or near-future feedstock availability and CI. The total biofuel production potential of CH (SAF and renewable fuel co-products) in the US sums to approximately 3487 million gallons per year, with 97% of these volumes having a CI below 50% of that for petroleum jet fuel. The study shows that from an LCA perspective, CH offers a viable SAF pathway that is comparable with existing SAF pathways like hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids.

Pyrene‐Based Noncovalent Immobilization of Nitrogenase on Carbon Surfaces

Abstract Early work with viologen‐mediated nitrogenase bio‐electrochemistry focused on bio‐electrocatalysis with the enzyme in solution, but biocatalyst immobilization at electrode surfaces is favorable as it provides a high effective concentration of biocatalyst at the electrode surface. We have used a pyrene–peptide linker as a method for immobilizing nitrogenase on carbon electrode surfaces for nitrogenase bio‐electrocatalysis.

Development of the Safe and Broad‐Spectrum Aldehyde and Ketoamide Mpro inhibitors Derived from the Constrained α, γ‐AA Peptide Scaffold

Abstract SARS‐CoV‐2 is still wreaking havoc all over the world with surging morbidity and high mortality. The main protease (M pro ) is essential in the replication of SARS‐CoV‐2, enabling itself an active target for antiviral development. Herein, we reported the design and synthesis of a new class of peptidomimetics‐constrained α, γ‐AA peptides, based on which a series of aldehyde and ketoamide inhibitors of the M pro of SARS‐CoV‐2 were prepared. The lead compounds showed excellent inhibitory activity in the FRET‐based M pro enzymatic assay not only for the M pro of SARS‐CoV‐2 but also for SARS‐CoV and MERS‐CoV, along with HCoVs like HCoV‐OC43, HCoV‐229E, HCoV‐NL63 and HKU1. The X‐ray crystallographic results demonstrated that our compounds form a covalent bond with the catalytic Cys145. They also demonstrated effective antiviral activity against live SARS‐CoV‐2. Overall, the results suggest that α, γ‐AA peptide could be a promising molecular scaffold in designing novel M pro inhibitors of SARS‐CoV‐2 and other coronaviruses.

OpenABLext: An automatic code generation framework for agent-based simulations on CPU-GPU-FPGA heterogeneous platforms

The execution of agent-based simulations (ABSs) on hardware accelerator devices such as graphics processing units (GPUs) has been shown to offer great performance potentials. However, in heterogeneous hardware environments, it can become increasingly difficult to find viable partitions of the simulation and provide implementations for different hardware devices. To automate this process, we present OpenABLext, an extension to OpenABL, a model specification language for ABSs. By providing a device-aware OpenCL backend, OpenABLext enables the co-execution of ABS on heterogeneous hardware platforms consisting of central processing units, GPUs, and field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs).We present a novel online dispatching method that efficiently profiles partitions of the simulation during run-time to optimize the hardware assignment while using the profiling results to advance the simulation itself. In addition, OpenABLext features automated conflict resolution based on user-specified rules, supports graph-based simulation spaces, and utilizes an efficient neighbor search algorithm. We show the improved performance of OpenABLext and demonstrate the potential of FPGAs in the context of ABS. We illustrate how co-execution can be used to further lower execution times. OpenABLext can be seen as an enabler to tap the computing power of heterogeneous hardware platforms for ABS.

Switching CO 2 Electroreduction Selectivity Between C 1 and C 2 Hydrocarbons on Cu Gas-Diffusion Electrodes

We report that regulating the selectivity toward a target hydrocarbon product is still the focus of CO 2 electroreduction. Here, we discover that the original surface Cu species in Cu gas-diffusion electrodes plays a more important role than the surface roughness, local pH, and facet in governing the selectivity toward C 1 or C 2 hydrocarbons. The selectivity toward C 2 H 4 progressively increases, while CH 4 decreases steadily upon lowering the Cu oxidation species fraction. At a relatively low electrodeposition voltage of 1.5 V, the Cu gas-diffusion electrode with the highest Cu δ+ /Cu 0 ratio favors the pathways of hydrogenation to form CH 4 with maximum Faradaic efficiency of 65.4% and partial current density of 228 mA cm -2 at -0.83 V vs RHE. At 2.0 V, the Cu gas-diffusion electrode with the lowest Cu δ+ /Cu 0 ratio prefers C–C coupling to form C 2+ products with Faradaic efficiency topping 80.1% at -0.75 V vs RHE, where the Faradaic efficiency of C 2 H 4 accounts for 46.4% and the partial current density of C 2 H 4 achieves 279 mA cm -2 . This work demonstrates that the selectivity from CH 4 to C 2 H 4 is switchable by tuning surface Cu species composition of Cu gas-diffusion electrodes.

Conducting Polymers Meet Lithium–Sulfur Batteries: Progress, Challenges, and Perspectives

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries have attracted increased interest because of the high theoretical energy density, low cost, and environmental friendliness. Conducting polymers (CPs), as one of the most promising materials used in Li–S batteries, can not only facilitate electron transfer and buffer the large volumetric change of sulfur benefiting from their porous structure and excellent flexibility, but also enable stronger physical/chemical adsorption capacity toward polysulfides (LiPSs) when doped with abundant heteroatoms to promote the sulfur redox kinetics and achieve the high sulfur loading. This review firstly introduces the properties of various CPs including structural CPs (polypyrrole (PPy), polyaniline (PANi), polyethylene dioxothiophene [PEDOT]) and compound CPs (polyethylene oxide (PEO), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and poly(acrylic acid) [PAA]), and their application potential in Li–S batteries. Furthermore, the research progress of various CPs in different components (cathode, separator, and interlayer) of Li–S batteries is systematically summarized. Finally, the application perspective of the CPs in Li–S batteries as a potential guidance is comprehensively discussed.

Surface Modification of Nickel-Rich Cathode Materials by Ionically Conductive Materials at Room Temperature

Nickel-rich cathode materials (LiNi x Mn y Co 1-x-y O 2 , NMC) are promising to push the limits of lithium-ion batteries to higher energy density. This approach is favored in practical applications including electric vehicles and aviation transportation. However, the instability of the NMC at charged state results in safety concerns and poor cycling stability. Surface coating is a practical and effective strategy to address this. Cubic Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) is an ideal coating material regarding the low electron transfer rate and high Li+ conductivity. Thus, a LLZO coating layer can suppress the parasitic reactions in the electrode/electrolyte interface without deteriorating the lithium migration. However, high-temperature calcination seems to inevitably create the chemical couplings between NMC and LLZO, leading to the interdiffusion and degradation of NMC and LLZO crystal structures. This work presents a simple mechanochemical method to effectively coat LLZO on the NMC particle surface. Furthermore, the coated cathode demonstrates superior electrochemical performance compared with the pristine NMC cathode.

Obesity is associated with biliary tract cancer mortality and incidence: A pooled analysis of 21 cohort studies in the Asia Cohort Consortium

Abstract Body fatness is considered a probable risk factor for biliary tract cancer (BTC), whereas cholelithiasis is an established factor. Nevertheless, although obesity is an established risk factor for cholelithiasis, previous studies of the association of body mass index (BMI) and BTC did not take the effect of cholelithiasis fully into account. To better understand the effect of BMI on BTC, we conducted a pooled analysis using population‐based cohort studies in Asians. In total, 905 530 subjects from 21 cohort studies participating in the Asia Cohort Consortium were included. BMI was categorized into four groups: underweight (<18.5 kg/m 2 ); normal (18.5‐22.9 kg/m 2 ); overweight (23‐24.9 kg/m 2 ); and obese (25+ kg/m 2 ). The association between BMI and BTC incidence and mortality was assessed using hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) by Cox regression models with shared frailty. Mediation analysis was used to decompose the association into a direct and an indirect (mediated) effect. Compared to normal BMI, high BMI was associated with BTC mortality (HR 1.19 [CI 1.02‐1.38] for males, HR 1.30 [1.14‐1.49] for females). Cholelithiasis had significant interaction with BMI on BTC risk. BMI was associated with BTC risk directly and through cholelithiasis in females, whereas the association was unclear in males. When cholelithiasis was present, BMI was not associated with BTC death in either males or females. BMI was associated with BTC death among females without cholelithiasis. This study suggests BMI is associated with BTC mortality in Asians. Cholelithiasis appears to contribute to the association; and moreover, obesity appears to increase BTC risk without cholelithiasis.

Synergistic Alignment of Low Aspect‐Ratio π‐Conjugated Molecules Enables Exceptional UV–vis–NIR Polarization Detection

Abstract Polarization detection enhances signal contrast and is widely utilized in diverse advanced applications. An ongoing challenge is the development of high‐performance polarization‐sensitive photodetectors based on optically anisotropic organic semiconductors, particularly in the near‐infrared (NIR) region. While uniaxially aligned π‐conjugated polymers with high aspect ratios exhibit strong linear dichroism and have shown promise, their limited NIR performance and heavy reliance on polymer material now represent critical limitations. Here, a breakthrough is reported in achieving giant linear dichroism and exceptional polarization detection with low aspect‐ratios (AR) non‐fullerene small‐molecule (NFSM) acceptors, extending polarization sensitivity from the UV–vis to the NIR range. An impressive dichroic ratio of 27.1 at 605 nm and 12.0 at 780 nm is demonstrated. The maximum polarization photocurrent ratio is 11.2 at 780 nm under parallel versus perpendicular polarized light. This unprecedented performance originates from synergistic molecular alignment, wherein NFSMs significantly enhance the uniaxial orientation of both the polymer matrix and the NFSMs themselves during self‐assembly and thermal annealing. Besides, such a linear‐polarization‐sensitive photodetectors (LPS‐PDs) are showcased in generating degree‐of‐linear‐polarization imaging. The work establishes NFSMs as a viable material system for next‐generation of organic LPS‐PDs and provides fundamental insights into structural origins of polarization sensitivity in low AR organic semiconductors.

Flexible‐rate optoelectronic wireless transmission system at 101 GHz using multiband CAP‐PAM modulation and envelope detection

Abstract In this paper, we have experimentally demonstrated the first flexible‐rate optoelectronic terahertz wireless transmission system at 101 GHz based on multiband CAP‐PAM modulation and cost‐efficient envelope detection. Instead of traditional M‐QAM mapping, PAM‐N mapping is used in CAP modulation with low‐computational complexity. The system performances and optimal capacity in both single‐band case and multiband case are intensively investigated. The results show that the highest data rate for single‐band system is 13.35 Gbit/s with CAP‐PAM‐5 modulation, while the optimum aggregate transmission line rate of 8.49 Gbit/s can be obtained with 4‐sub‐bands CAP‐PAM‐{5,3,2,2} modulation under 7% FEC limit of 3.8 × 10 −3 for four‐user access.

Unexpected structural/motional mode of water intercalated into an α-crystalline zirconium phosphate deduced by 31 P and 2 H solid-state MAS NMR spectra

Here, in developing the approach to understanding dynamics of intercalates in layered materials, crystalline-layered zirconium phosphate Zr (HPO 4 ) 2 ·0.35D2O has been prepared and characterized by the 1 H, 31 P, and 2 H solid-state MAS NMR spectra, including 31 P and 2 H T 1 measurements. At temperatures >253 K, the intercalated water shows two spectrally-distinguished deuterons unprecedentedly with different DQCC's and 2 H T 1 times, one of which is hydrogen bonded. The collected data allowed to identify an unexpected bonding/dynamic mode of water molecules, which experience fast rotation around the hydrogen bond, formed with a zirconium-coordinated oxygen. The low-temperature 2 H MAS NMR experiments have demonstrated the presence of additional hydrogen bond P—(H)O˙˙˙ DO, population of which grows on cooling to 195 K corresponding to the doubly hydrogen-bonded immobile water molecule.
