HYDES: A generalized hybrid computer program for studying turbojet or turbofan engine dynamics

This report describes HYDES, a hybrid computer program capable of simulating one-spool turbojet, two-spool turbojet, or two-spool turbofan engine dynamics. HYDES is also capable of simulating two- or three-stream turbofans with or without mixing of the exhaust streams. The program is intended to reduce the time required for implementing dynamic engine simulations. HYDES was developed for running on the Lewis Research Center's Electronic Associates (EAI) 690 Hybrid Computing System and satisfies the 16384-word core-size and hybrid-interface limits of that machine. The program could be modified for running on other computing systems. The use of HYDES to simulate a single-spool turbojet and a two-spool, two-stream turbofan engine is demonstrated. The form of the required input data is shown and samples of output listings (teletype) and transient plots (x-y plotter) are provided. HYDES is shown to be capable of performing both steady-state design and off-design analyses and transient analyses.

Transient dynamic analysis of high-speed lightly loaded cylindrical roller bearings. 2: Computer program and results

The governing differential equations of motion for a high speed cylindrical roller bearing are programmed for numerical solution and plotted output. This computer program has the capability of performing a two dimensional or three dimensional simulation. Two numerical solutions of the governing differential equations were obtained to simulate the motion of a roller bearing, one for the two dimensional equations of motion and one for the three dimensional equations of motion. Computer generated plots were obtained and present such data as roller/cage interaction forces, roller/race traction forces, roller/race relative slip velocities and cage angular speed over a nondimensional time equivalent to 1.2 revolutions of the inner race. Roller axial displacement, roller skew angle, and skew moment are also plotted for the three dimensional solution. The trajectory of the cage center is plotted for both the two dimensional and three dimensional solutions.

The NASTRAN computer program for structural analysis.

Discussion of a large NASA-sponsored digital computer program for static and dynamic analysis of structures with linear or nonlinear material properties. The program fits to perform buckling analysis, vibration mode analysis of conservative or damped systems, frequency response analysis, and transient response analysis on the IBM 360, UNIVAC 1108, and CDC 6600 computers. It also provides automatic generation of several types of loads such as gravity loads and thermal strain loads, plots of deformed and nondeformed structures, and the choice of alternate analysis methods such as direct or modal formulations of dynamic problems. The program is intended primarily for large problems involving hundreds of thousands of degrees of freedom. A flexible Executive System is provided to facilitate the addition of new functional capabilities to the program.

Computer program calculates and plots surface area and pore size distribution data

Computer program calculates surface area and pore size distribution of powders, metals, ceramics, and catalysts, and prints and plots the desired data directly. Surface area calculations are based on the gas adsorption technique of Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller, and pore size distribution calculations are based on the gas adsorption technique of Pierce.

Computer program determines exact two-sided tolerance limits for normal distributions

Computer program determines by numerical integration the exact statistical two-sided tolerance limits, when the proportion between the limits is at least a specified number. The program is limited to situations in which the underlying probability distribution for the population sampled is the normal distribution with unknown mean and variance.

A method for determining the response of space shuttle to atmospheric turbulence. Volume 2: Computer program description and usage instructions

A description is given of a computer program which calculates the response of an elastic aerospace vehicle to random and discrete turbulence. The program uses vibration modes as generalized coordinates. Inputs to the program include modal information, generalized aerodynamic forces, flight data, stability augmentation system description, and description of the disturbing function. Program outputs include tabulations of the ratio of root-mean-square response to root-mean-square turbulence and response upward zero crossings per second, and SC4020 plots of transfer functions, response power spectral densities, and Nyquist stability traces.
