Broadband rapid-scanning phase-modulated Fourier transform electronic spectroscopy

We present a phase-modulated approach for ultrabroadband Fourier transform electronic spectroscopy. To overcome the bandwidth limitations and spatial chirp introduced by acousto-optic modulators (AOMs), pulses from a 1 µm laser are modulated using AOMs prior to continuum generation. This phase modulation is transferred to the continuum generated in a yttrium aluminum garnet crystal. Separately generated phase-modulated continua in two arms of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer interfere with the difference of their modulation frequencies, enabling physical under-sampling of the signal and the suppression of low-frequency noise. By interferometrically tracking the relative time delay of the continua, we perform continuous, rapid-scanning Fourier transform electronic spectroscopy with a high signal-to-noise ratio and spectral resolution. As proof of principle, we measure the linear absorption and fluorescence excitation spectra of a laser dye and various biological samples.

Ultra compact Bragg grating devices with broadband selectivity

Current silicon waveguide Bragg gratings typically introduce perturbation to the optical mode in the form of modulation of the waveguide width or cladding. However, since such a perturbation approach is limited to weak perturbations to avoid intolerable scattering loss and higher-order modal coupling, it is difficult to produce ultra-wide stopbands. In this Letter, we report an ultra-compact Bragg grating device with strong perturbations by etching nanoholes in the waveguide core to enable an ultra-large stopband with apodization achieved by proper location of the nanoholes. With this approach, a 15 µm long device can generate a stopband as wide as 110 nm that covers the entire C + L band with a 40 dB extinction ratio and over a 10 dB sidelobe suppression ratio (SSR). Similar structures can be further optimized to achieve higher SSR of > <#comment/> 17 d B for a stopband of about 80 nm.

Ultra-broadband quadrature squeezing with thin-film lithium niobate nanophotonics

Squeezed light is a key quantum resource that enables quantum advantages for sensing, networking, and computing applications. The scalable generation and manipulation of squeezed light with integrated platforms are highly desired for the development of quantum technology with continuous variables. In this Letter, we demonstrate squeezed light generation with thin-film lithium niobate integrated photonics. Parametric down-conversion is realized with quasi-phase matching using ferroelectric domain engineering. With sub-wavelength mode confinement, efficient nonlinear processes can be observed with single-pass configuration. We measure 0.56 ± 0.09 dB quadrature squeezing (∼2.6 dB inferred on-chip). The single-pass configuration further enables the generation of squeezed light with large spectral bandwidth up to 7 THz. This work represents a significant step towards the on-chip implementation of continuous-variable quantum information processing.

Broadband polarization-entangled source for C+L-band flex-grid quantum networks

The rising demand for transmission capacity in optical networks has motivated steady interest in expansion beyond the standard C-band (1530–1565 nm) into the adjacent L-band (1565–1625 nm) for an approximate doubling of capacity in a single stroke. However, in the context of quantum networking, the L-band has yet to be fully leveraged with the suite of advanced tools for characterization and management available from classical lightwave communications. In this work, we demonstrate an ultrabroadband two-photon source integrating both C- and L-band wavelength-selective switches for complete control of spectral routing and allocation across 7.5 THz in a single setup. Polarization state tomography of all 150 pairs of 25-GHz-wide channels reveals an average fidelity of 0.98 and total distillable entanglement greater than 181 kebits/s. This source is explicitly designed for flex-grid optical networks and can facilitate optimal utilization of entanglement resources across the full C+L-band.

3D Printing Prototypes for a Reflector-Based Broadband Axion Search

This work sought to begin research and development on a horn antenna which can be used to transfer the energy of microwave photons produced by axions in a strong magnetic field to a coaxial cable for measurement. 3D prototypes of pyramidal horn antennas and a parabolic reflector were printed and then coated with conductive spray paint. The S 11 parameter was measured and simulated for both 3D printed horn antenna and the conical horn antenna both with and without the reflector present to determine how much of the radiated power was reflected back. Ultimately, for both the conical and pyramidal antennas, less than one percent of the energy emitted by the antennas was reflected back. When the pyramidal antenna was tilted by about 45 degrees, however, around 30-40 percent of the microwaves emitted by the antennas was reflected back.

Magnetically Coupled Broadband Dual Magnetic Mass/Spring Vibrational Energy Harvesting Design

Self-powering sensors and networks are a reality. The ability to extract ambient energy from the surroundings to power electronic devices has a profound impact on the realization of smart adaptable sensor networks. In this study, a magnetically coupled dual spring and magnet design has been investigated to improve the efficiency and performance bandwidth of vibration energy harvesting (VEH) sensors. Using numerical models based on traditional systems of coupled ordinary differential equations (ODE), an optimized design was developed and compared to experimental measurements. Numerical and empirical results show good agreement. Results show improvement in the bandwidth over an equivalent linear system and corresponding improvement in output power conversion efficiency. The increased bandwidth allows improved conversion sensitivity and enhanced power harvesting capabilities. This operational bandwidth coincides with the expected input spectrum for in situ applications.

Broadband mm-Wave Substrate Integrated Waveguides [Poster]

At mm-wave frequencies, signals need to be supported by specialized, low-loss transmission lines such as waveguides. Substrate-integrated waveguides (SIWs) combine the good electrical properties of rectangular waveguides with the compactness of planar transmission lines. Additionally, SIWs can be fabricated using standard PCB manufacturing techniques and can be easily integrated with other mm-wave components. This study explores SIWs in the 50-75 GHz range, with designs optimized for simple fabrication.
