ALP contribution to the strong C P problem

We compute the one-loop contribution to the θ ¯ parameter of an faxionlike particle (ALP) with C P -odd derivative couplings. Its contribution to the neutron electric dipole moment is shown to be orders of magnitude larger than that stemming from the one-loop ALP contributions to the up- and down-quark electric and chromoelectric dipole moments. This strongly improves existing bounds on ALP-fermion C P -odd interactions and also sets limits on previously unconstrained couplings. The case of a general singlet scalar is analyzed as well. In addition, we explore how the bounds are modified in the presence of a Peccei-Quinn symmetry. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Constructing nested coordinates inside strongly shaped toroids using an action principle

A new approach for constructing polar-like boundary-conforming coordinates inside a toroid with strongly shaped cross-sections is presented. A coordinate mapping is obtained through a variational approach, which involves identifying extremal points of a proposed action in the mapping space from [0,2π] 2 ×[0,1] to a toroidal domain in $\mathbb{R}$ 3 . This approach employs an action built on the squared Jacobian and radial length. Extensive testing is conducted on general toroidal boundaries using a global Fourier–Zernike basis via action minimisation. The results demonstrate successful coordinate construction capable of accurately describing strongly shaped toroidal domains. The coordinate construction is successfully applied to the computation of three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic equilibria in the GVEC code where the use of traditional coordinate construction by interpolation from the boundary failed.

Corrigendum: Thermal dynamics in the flux-coordinate independent turbulence code GRILLIX

Here, we have discovered that one of the original articles findings, that the actual choice of the dimensionless parameter χ ∥i0 for the ion heat conductivity seemed to play no role for the simulation results, was not physical. Instead, due to a mistake in the handling of input parameters, χ ∥i0 was actually not used in the code – the dimensionless electron heat conductivity χ ∥e0 was used instead.

The University of Virginia, Theoretical High Energy Physics (Final Technical Report)

We summarize research performed in the final reporting period of grant DE-SC0007984 for University of Virginia, Theoretical High Energy Physics. Progress was made on studying quantum mechanical effects in the showering of high energy particles inside a quark-gluon plasma, on the effects of extra dimensions on gravitational waves, and on expanding the use of what is known as the "worldline" formalism in quantum field theory.

Search for new phenomena in multi-body invariant masses in events with at least one isolated lepton and two jets using $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV proton–proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector

A search for resonances in events with at least one isolated lepton (e or μ ) and two jets is performed using 139 fb -1 of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Deviations from a smoothly falling background hypothesis are tested in three- and four-body invariant mass distributions constructed from leptons and jets, including jets identified as originating from bottom quarks. Model-independent limits on generic resonances characterised by cascade decays of particles leading to multiple jets and leptons in the final state are presented. The limits are calculated using Gaussian shapes with different widths for the invariant masses. The multi-body invariant masses are also used to set 95% confidence level upper limits on the cross-section times branching ratios for the production and subsequent decay of resonances predicted by several new physics scenarios.

photoD with Rubin ’s Data Preview 1: First stellar photometric distances and faint blue star deficits

Aims. We investigate the utility of Rubin’s Data Preview 1 (DP1) for estimating stellar number density profiles across the Milky Way halo. Methods. We used stellar broad-band near-UV to near-IR ugrizy photometry released in Rubin’s DP1 to estimate distance and metallicity for blue main sequence stars brighter than r = 24 in three ~1.1 sq. deg. fields at southern Galactic latitudes. Results. Compared to TRILEGAL simulations of the Galaxy’s stellar content, we found a likely deficit of blue main sequence turn-off stars with 22 < r < 24. We interpreted this discrepancy as a signature of a steeper halo number density profile at galactocentric distances 10–50 kpc than the canonical ~1/r 3 profile assumed in TRILEGAL simulations. Conclusions. This interpretation is consistent with earlier suggestions based on observations of more luminous, but much less numerous, evolved stellar populations, along with a few pencil beam surveys of blue main sequence stars in the northern sky. These results bode well for the future Galactic halo exploration with Rubin’s Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST).

A topological approach to magnetic nulls

Magnetic nulls are locations where the magnetic field vanishes. They determine to a large degree the magnetic connectivity in a system, and are sites of magnetic reconnection. We describe a novel approach to understanding movement, appearance, and disappearance of nulls in magnetic fields. This approach is based on the concept of isotropes, or lines where the field direction is constant. These lines are streamlines of a vector field whose flux is sourced by the topological indices of nulls, and can be conceptualized as corresponding to ‘lines of force’ between nulls. We show how this topological approach can be used to generate analytical expressions for the location of nulls in the presence of external fields for dipoles and for a field defined by the Hopf fibration.

Optimizing MeV photon dose generation in laser-solid interactions via stable beam propagation

Bremsstrahlung MeV x rays with high doses are essential for radiography of dense objects. Intense, short-pulse laser-driven MeV x-ray sources offer a promising solution, but understanding how the dose scales with laser intensity is crucial for their development. While theory predicts a square root scaling with laser intensity, experimental verification has been hindered by significant shot-to-shot variations, often exacerbated by long preplasma scale lengths from low laser contrast. Here, we demonstrate low shot-to-shot dose variation and confirm the theoretical scaling using high-contrast OMEGA EP laser interactions with millimeter-thick tantalum foils, achieving MeV x-ray doses up to 5.4 rad at 1 m for E photon > 500 keV. Simulations reveal that the unique focal spot of the OMEGA EP laser enables efficient x-ray generation and reduced variability by facilitating deeper laser penetration into dense plasma, even with shorter preplasma scale lengths. Dipolar Spin Ice Regime Proximate to an All-In-All-Out Néel Ground State in the Dipolar-Octupolar Pyrochlore Ce 2 Sn 2 O 7

The dipolar-octupolar (DO) pyrochlores, R 2 M 2 O 7 ( R = Ce , Sm , Nd ), are key players in the search for realizable novel quantum spin liquid (QSL) states as a large parameter space within the DO pyrochlore phase diagram is theorized to host QSL states of both dipolar and octupolar nature. New single crystals and powders of Ce 2 Sn 2 O 7 , synthesized by hydrothermal techniques, present an opportunity for a new characterization of the exchange parameters in Ce 2 Sn 2 O 7 using the near-neighbor X Y Z model Hamiltonian associated with DO pyrochlores. Utilizing quantum numerical linked cluster expansion fits to heat capacity and magnetic susceptibility measurements, and classical Monte Carlo calculations to the diffuse neutron diffraction of the new hydrothermally grown Ce 2 Sn 2 O 7 samples, we place Ce 2 Sn 2 O 7 ’s ground state within the ordered dipolar all-in-all-out (AIAO) Néel phase, with quantum Monte Carlo calculations showing a transition to long-range order at temperatures below those accessed experimentally. Indeed, our new neutron diffraction measurements on the hydrothermally grown Ce 2 Sn 2 O 7 powders show a broad signal at low scattering wave vectors, reminiscent of a spin ice, in striking contrast from previous powder neutron diffraction on samples grown from solid-state synthesis, which found diffuse scattering at high scattering wave vectors associated with magnetic and suggested an octupolar quantum spin ice state. We conclude that new hydrothermally grown Ce 2 Sn 2 O 7 samples host a finite-temperature proximate dipolar spin ice phase, above the expected transition to AIAO Néel order. Comparing the DES-SN5YR and Pantheon+ SN cosmology analyses: investigation based on ‘evolving dark energy or supernovae systematics’?

Recent cosmological analyses measuring distances of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) and baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) have all given similar hints at time-evolving dark energy. To examine whether underestimated SN Ia systematics might be driving these results, Efstathiou (2025) compared overlapping SN events between Pantheon+ and DES-SN5YR (20 per cent SNe are in common), and reported evidence for an $\sim$0.04 mag offset between the low- and high-redshift distance measurements of this subsample of events. If this offset is arbitrarily subtracted from the entire DES-SN5YR sample, the preference for evolving dark energy is reduced. In this paper, we show that this offset is mostly due to different corrections for Malmquist bias between the two samples; therefore, an object-to-object comparison can be misleading. Malmquist bias corrections differ between the two analyses for several reasons. First, DES-SN5YR used an improved model of SN Ia luminosity scatter compared to Pantheon+ but the associated scatter-model uncertainties are included in the error budget. Secondly, improvements in host mass estimates in DES-SN5YR also affected SN standardized magnitudes and their bias corrections. Thirdly, and most importantly, the selection functions of the two compilations are significantly different, hence the inferred Malmquist bias corrections. Even if the original scatter model and host properties from Pantheon+ are used instead, the evidence for evolving dark energy from CMB, DESI BAO Year 1 and DES-SN5YR is only reduced from 3.9$\sigma$ to 3.3$\sigma$, consistent with the error budget. Finally, in this investigation, we identify an underestimated systematic uncertainty related to host galaxy property uncertainties, which could increase the final DES-SN5YR error budget by 3 per cent. In conclusion, we confirm the validity of the published DES-SN5YR results.

Adiabatic matching of particle bunches in a plasma-based accelerator in the presence of ion motion

Witness beam stability and preservation of its ultra-low emittance have been identified as critical challenges toward realizing a TeV-class, plasma-based linear collider. In fact, the witness bunch parameters required by a future TeV-class collider have been expected to trigger hosing instability and background ion motion, leading to emittance degradation and, potentially, to bunch loss. Recently, it has been shown that ion motion suppresses the hosing instability, and proper longitudinal bunch shaping can eliminate the ion-motion-induced emittance growth. Here, we propose and analyze a plasma-based method to generate the shaped bunches that enable emittance preservation in the presence of ion motion. The method is based on an adiabatic matching procedure, where a bunch with an initially untapered profile is injected in the plasma accelerator stage with an energy low enough that ion motion effects are initially small. As the bunch accelerates, it is adiabatically compressed, ion motion is gradually triggered, and the bunch slowly but continuously readjusts itself in the ion motion-perturbed wakefield acquiring the desired taper. The production of tapered witness bunch profiles that minimize energy spread and preserve emittance for collider-relevant parameters could enable the use of plasma-based accelerators for high-energy physics applications.

Generalized Ginsparg-Wilson relations

We give a general derivation of Ginsparg-Wilson relations for both Dirac and Majorana fermions in any dimension. These relations encode continuous and discrete chiral, parity and time-reversal anomalies and will apply to the various classes of free-fermion topological insulators and superconductors (in the framework of a relativistic quantum field theory in Euclidean spacetime). We show how to formulate the exact symmetries of the lattice action and the relevant index theorems for the anomalies. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Pursuit of paired dijet resonances in the Run 2 dataset with ATLAS

New particles with large masses that decay into hadronically interacting particles are predicted by many models of physics beyond the Standard Model. A search for a massive resonance that decays into pairs of dijet resonances is performed using 140 fb –1 of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider. Resonances are searched for in the invariant mass of the tetrajet system, and in the average invariant mass of the pair of dijet systems. A data-driven background estimate is obtained by fitting the tetrajet and dijet invariant mass distributions with a four-parameter dijet function and a search for local excesses from resonant production of dijet pairs is performed. No significant excess of events beyond the Standard Model expectation is observed, and upper limits are set on the production cross sections of new physics scenarios.

Reactor wall effects in Si–Cl 2 –Ar atomic layer etching

This work complements our previous manuscript [J. Vac. Sci. Technol. A41, 062602 (2023)] where predictions from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of silicon–chlorine–argon (Si–Cl 2 –Ar) atomic layer etching (ALE) are compared to experiments. When etch product distributions for atomic chlorine (Cl) and silicon chlorides were initially compared to optical emission spectroscopy (OES) signals, it appeared that there was a discrepancy between the MD predictions and experimental results at higher ion fluences. Experiments showed a relatively long period of nearly constant Cl-containing etch products released from the ion-bombarded surface (referred to as the “plateau”) but this effect was not observed in MD simulations. In this report, we demonstrate that the “plateau” observed in the OES signals is most likely due to the desorption of Cl-containing etch products from the walls of the reactor and subsequent adsorption on the Si substrate. Experiments varying the gas residence time in the chamber while keeping incoming gas concentrations and pressure constant support this interpretation. We also conducted experiments with an additional Ar-only flow in the chamber to reduce the concentration of Cl-containing species on the chamber walls. For both sets of flow modification experiments, we observe results consistent with the hypothesis that Cl-containing species desorbing from chamber walls are a significant cause of the observed discrepancy between MD predictions and experimental observations. If the measured OES signals are corrected for this “additional” source of Cl-containing species at the surface, the MD predictions and measured OES signals are in excellent agreement. This further supports the predictive capability of MD simulations to accurately capture the relevant physical and chemical processes in plasma-assisted ALE processes. We provide an order of magnitude estimate of the required density of Cl-containing species that would account for the additional etch products observed. Finally, we discuss the implications of this effect on ALE in plasma nanofabrication.
