Carbon flux measurements from chambers collected between July to October 2022 at Old Woman Creek, Huron, Ohio.

This dataset contains carbon dioxide and methane flux measurements collected via chamber sampling at Old Woman Creek National Estuarine Research Reserve in Huron, OH. These data were generated to understand temporal and vegetation patterns associated with wetland carbon cycling. Specifically, this dataset intends to answer how carbon dioxide and methane fluxes change monthly and hourly across sites with vegetation and without vegetation. Data includes chamber measurements that were measured in both sites with vegetation and without vegetation and that were collected hourly, for 12 hours, and monthly, for four months. The file soilrespiration_data.csv contains these data, and the metadata file (soilrespiration_chammetadata.csv) and location metadata file (soilrespiration_locationmetadata.csv) have information on locations where the chambers were placed and sampled in the wetland. Data processing was done on raw methane fluxes (Flux_CH4) to remove the influence of ebullition (Flux_CH4_ebullition) to get a diffusive flux (Flux_CH4_diffusive).

Soil Incubation, Methane Pool Dilution, Edgewater, MD, USA, July 2022 v1.0.1

Isotopic pool dilution is a powerful approach to quantify gross biogeochemical transformation rates, but remains seldom used despite its potential. To facilitate broader implementation of pool dilution methods, we developed a user-friendly R package that optimizes gross production and consumption rates (and optionally fractionation constants as well) based on standard pool dilution time series data. This data package is the soil methane pool dilution data and code for building and using this software, including source code (R) and raw data (.csv). This package features extensive documentation and example analyses, and is easily integrated into analytical pipelines as R software is free and open source. Operation of this package requires R version 2.10 or newer, and we recommend its use in conjunction with packages testthat (3.0.0), knitr, rmarkdown, ggploto2, tibble, and tidyr.

Patch-level CO2 and CH4 fluxes and porewater concentrations in experimental wetlands, 2 PPT saltwater intrusion simulations, Aug-Oct 2022: Louisiana

This dataset contains carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) flux measurements from patches of wetland vegetation dominated by Typha domingensis and Panicum hemitomon, which were conducted to assess flux responses to acute saltwater intrusion. The measurements occurred before, during, and after simulated acute saltwater intrusion events of low concentrations of ~ 2 PPT. The measurements comprise gas fluxes from the wetland surface (i.e., soil-water column and vegetation) and fluxes from the soil-water column exclusively. These two sets of fluxes are separated into two files and are complemented with four more files containing porewater concentrations of CO2 and CH4 collected at 0-5 cm, 10-15 cm, and 20-25 cm depth increments, spectral indices measurements, biomass, and sediment elevation table measurements. The files can be opened with regular text editors or spreadsheet programs.

Heating effects on pyrogenic organic matter mass loss and temperature in a sand matrix in a lab setting from 2022

This dataset contains data associated with the preprint “A laboratory method for simulating the effects of subsequent fires on pyrogenic organic matter at different exposure depths in a sand matrix” (https://doi.org/10.1101/2024.07.30.605814), which has been accepted for publication in the International Journal of Wildland Fire. The dataset was generated to investigate the effects of subsequent fires on preexisting pyrogenic organic matter (PyOM) at different soil depths. Specifically, we designed a laboratory method to simulate soil heating from above, applying realistic heat flux profiles (High, Low, Control) derived from jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) log burns. Using a cone calorimeter, these profiles were applied to buried jack pine PyOM (produced at 350°C) in a sand matrix pyrocosm to examine PyOM mass loss at different depths (surface, 1 cm, 5 cm). Each treatment (e.g., High heat flux at 1 cm depth) was applied once to five replicates in a pyrocosm. The dataset includes mass loss fraction of PyOM and time-series temperature profiles (measured with type K thermocouples). Additionally, calibration datasets for high and low heat flux profiles are provided, including programmed heat flux profile data and three sets of calibration results. All datasets are in .csv format and were analyzed in R using code found at https://github.com/MengmengLuo/Reburning-pyrogenic-organic-matter-A-laboratory-method-for-dosing-dynamic-heat-fluxes-from-above. This dataset supports research on PyOM transformations during subsequent fires, and methodological advancements in simulating soil heating. It can be used to explore fire-induced PyOM alterations across different fire intensities and soil depths.

Vegetation transect surveys from 2022 and 2023 within the Kougarok Fire Complex (KFC) on the Seward Peninsula in Alaska, USA

This dataset contains recorded vegetation classifications from 16 transects within the Kougarok Fire Complex (KFC) area in Alaska. Each transect is 50 meters long, and vertical vegetation profiles were sampled every 50cm, resulting in 101 points recorded for each transect. At each point, a vertical rod was inserted in the ground and any living plant or substrate touching the rod was recorded from top to bottom. For each plant, the plant functional type (PFT) and species name was identified and recorded. The file "flmd.xlsx" provides file level meta data for all other included files. The file (transect_metadata.csv) contains descriptive information about each of the 16 transects (field observation year and date; latitude and longitude GPS measurements of the 0, 25, and 50 meter points; and whether that area burned during the 1971, 1997, 2002, 2015, and/or 2019 fires). The files (PFT_names.csv and species_names.csv) map the short hand labels for the plant function type (PFT) and species used in the transect surveys to their full names. The remaining files are named for each transect, and contain the results of the vegetation survey for each transect. These files contain the plant functional type and the species identified at each point. Points along the transect with more than one species at that point are listed vertically from top to bottom in these files. The Next-Generation Ecosystem Experiments: Arctic (NGEE Arctic), was a research effort to reduce uncertainty in Earth System Models by developing a predictive understanding of carbon-rich Arctic ecosystems and feedbacks to climate. NGEE Arctic was supported by the Department of Energy's Office of Biological and Environmental Research. The NGEE Arctic project had two field research sites: 1) located within the Arctic polygonal tundra coastal region on the Barrow Environmental Observatory (BEO) and the North Slope near Utqiagvik (Barrow), Alaska and 2) multiple areas on the discontinuous permafrost region of the Seward Peninsula north of Nome, Alaska.Through observations, experiments, and synthesis with existing datasets, NGEE Arctic provided an enhanced knowledge base for multi-scale modeling and contributed to improved process representation at global pan-Arctic scales within the Department of Energy's Earth system Model (the Energy Exascale Earth System Model, or E3SM), and specifically within the E3SM Land Model component (ELM).

Specific conductivity and salinity of the Parker River, PIE LTER, Plum Island Sound MA, August-November 2022

This dataset contains specific conductivity and calculated salinity data of Parker River water at a tidal brackish wetland dominated by Typha angustifolia at the upper estuary of the Plum Island Sound in Newbury, Massachusetts (MA) within the Plum Island Ecosystems Long Term Ecological Research site (PIE LTER). Measurements were taken to evaluate temporal changes in surface water salinity in high frequency to characterize boundary conditions of soil and plant responses to changes in salinity. A PVC pipe was installed in a low elevation spot in the creek bank so that the bottom of the pipe sat on the sediment surface allowing flushing with water during flooding. Raw measurements were collected using an Onset HOBO U24-002 Saltwater Conductivity/Salinity data logger. The specific conductance and salinity measurements were corrected and calculated respectively using Onset’s HOBOware software and reference specific conductivity measurements taken in tandem with the first and last points recorded by the HOBO sensor. These reference measurements were taken using a HACH HQ14D Portable Conductivity Meter. Because of the installation design, only data one hour before and after high tide are used. Metadata files Typha_ctd_salinity_dd.csv and Typha_ctd_salinity_flmd.csv contain detailed information on data variables, sampling and QA/QC methods, and site location.
