The crystal structures of Fe-bearing MgCO 3 sp 2 - and sp 3 -carbonates at 98 GPa from single-crystal X-ray diffraction using synchrotron radiation

The crystal structure of MgCO 3 -II has long been discussed in the literature where DFT-based model calculations predict a pressure-induced transition of the carbon atom from the sp 2 to the sp 3 type of bonding. We have now determined the crystal structure of iron-bearing MgCO 3 -II based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements using synchrotron radiation. We laser-heated a synthetic (Mg 0.85 Fe 0.15 )CO 3 single crystal at 2500 K and 98 GPa and observed the formation of a monoclinic phase with composition (Mg 2.53 Fe 0.47 )C 3 O 9 in the space group C 2/ m that contains tetrahedrally coordinated carbon, where CO 4 4- tetrahedra are linked by corner-sharing oxygen atoms to form three-membered C 3 O 9 6- ring anions. The crystal structure of (Mg 0.85 Fe 0.15 )CO 3 (magnesium iron carbonate) at 98 GPa and 300 K is reported here as well. In comparison with previous structure-prediction calculations and powder X-ray diffraction data, our structural data provide reliable information from experiments regarding atomic positions, bond lengths, and bond angles.

Crystal structures and comparisons of potassium rare-earth molybdates KRE(MoO 4 ) 2 (RE = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb, and Lu)

Six potassium rare-earth molybdates KRE(MoO 4 ) 2 (RE = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb, and Lu) were synthesized by flux-assisted growth in K 2 Mo 3 O 10 . The crystal structures were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. The synthesized molybdates crystallize with the orthorhombic Pbcn space group (No. 60). Trendlines for unit-cell parameters were calculated using data from the current study. The unit-cell parameters a and c increase linearly whereas b decreases with larger RE cations, based on crystal radii. The unit-cell volumes increase linearly and the densities decrease linearly with larger RE cations. The average distances between the RE cations and the nearest O atoms increase with larger cations whereas the average distances of Mo—O and K—O do not show specific trends.

Crystal structure of a trigonal polymorph of aquadioxidobis(pentane-2,4-dionato-κ 2 O , O ′)uranium(VI)

The title compound, [UO 2 (acac) 2 (H 2 O)] consists of a uranyl(VI) unit ([O=U=O] 2+ ) coordinated to two monoanionic acetylacetonate (acac, C 5 H 7 O 2 ) ligands and one water molecule. The asymmetric unit includes a one-half of a uranium atom, one oxido ion, one-half of a water molecule and one acac ligand. The coordination about the uranium atom is distorted pentagonal–bipyramidal. The acac ligands and O w atom comprise the equatorial plane, while the uranyl O atoms occupy the axial positions. Intermolecular hydrogen bonding between complexes results in the formation of two-dimensional hexagonal void channels along the c- axis direction with a diameter of 6.7 Å. The monoclinic ( P 2 1 / c space group) polymorph was reported by Alcock & Flanders [(1987). Acta Cryst. C 43 , 1480–1483].

Synthesis and structural characterization of a hydrated sodium–caesium tetracosatungstate(VI), Na 5 Cs 19 [W 24 O 84 ]·21H 2 O

Crystal formation of pentasodium nonadecacesium tetracosatungstate(VI) heneikosahydrate, Na 5 Cs 19 [W 24 O 84 ]·21H 2 O, was successfully achieved by the conversion of [H 2 W 12 O 42 ] 10– through the addition of excess Cs + . The crystal structure comprising the toroidal isopolyoxidometalate is presented, as well as its Raman spectrum. Na 5 Cs 19 (H 2 O) 21 W 24 O 84 crystallizes in the rhombohedral space group R$\overline{3}$ with an obverse centering. The title compound represents the addition of a new member to the isopolytungstate family with mixed alkali counter-ions and contains rarely observed five-coordinate tungsten(VI) atoms in the [W 24 O 84 ] 24– anion (site symmetry C 3i ) arising from the conversion mediated by Cs + counter-ions.

Crystal Growth, Optical and Scintillation Properties of Eu 2+ -doped TlSr 2 Br 5

Crystals of undoped and Eu 2+ -doped TlSr 2 Br 5 of up to 16 mm in diameter and 50 mm in length were grown by the Vertical Bridgman technique. TlSr 2 Br 5 has the monoclinic crystal structure with space group P21/c. Its density and Z eff are 5.03 g/cm 3 and 58.6, respectively. Radioluminescence spectra of undoped and Eu 2+ -doped TlSr 2 Br 5 feature a broad emission band peaking at about 440 nm for undoped and 520 nm for Eu 2+ -doped crystals. The light yield of undoped TlSr 2 Br 5 is 42,000 ph/MeV, which increases to 55,000 ph/MeV for Eu 2+ -doped crystals. The energy resolution at 662 keV ( 137 Cs) is about 5 – 6% (FWHM). As a result, the scintillation decay of undoped and Eu 2+ -doped TlSr 2 Br 5 is of the order of 100s of nanoseconds.

Structural, vibrational, thermal, and magnetic properties of mullite-type NdMnTiO 5 ceramic

Mullite-type $R$Mn 2 O 5 ($R$ = Y, rare-earth element) ceramics are of ongoing research attention because of their interesting crystal-chemical and magnetic properties. We report nuclear and magnetic structures of NdMnTiO 5 together with its spectroscopic, thermogravimetric, and magnetic properties. The polycrystalline sample is prepared by solid-state synthesis and characterized from neutron and X-ray powder diffraction data Rietveld refinements. NdMnTiO 5 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group $Pbam$ with metric parameter $a$ = 755.20(1) pm, $b$ = 869.91(1) pm, $c$ = 582.42(1) pm, and $V$ = 382.62(1) 10 6 pm 3 . The Mn 3+ and Ti 4+ cations are observed to be located in the octahedral and pyramidal sites, respectively. The vibrational features in these polyhedral sites are characterized by Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopes. The higher decomposition temperature of NdMnTiO 5 , compared to other $R$Mn 2 O 5 phases, is explained in terms of the higher bond strength of Ti-O bonds than those of Mn-O bonds. Temperature-dependent DC magnetic susceptibility suggests a paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic phase transition at 43(1) K. Inverse susceptibility in the paramagnetic region above 120 K follows the Curie-Weiss law, resulting in a magnetic moment of 6.33(1) μ B per formula unit. Neutron diffraction data collected at 7.5 K reveal that the magnetic moments of Nd 3+ and Mn 3+ in NdMnTiO 5 are incommensurately ordered with a propagation vector $k$ = (0, 0.238, 0.117).

Emergent tetragonality in a fundamentally orthorhombic material

Symmetry plays a key role in determining the physical properties of materials. By Neumann’s principle, the properties of a material remain invariant under the symmetry operations of the space group to which the material belongs. Continuous phase transitions are associated with a spontaneous reduction in symmetry. Less common are examples where proximity to a continuous phase transition leads to an increase in symmetry. We find signatures of an emergent tetragonal symmetry close to a charge density wave (CDW) bicritical point in a fundamentally orthorhombic material, ErTe 3 , for which the two distinct CDW phase transitions are tuned via anisotropic strain. We first establish that tension along the a axis favors an abrupt rotation of the CDW wave vector from the c to a axis and infer the presence of a bicritical point where the two continuous phase transitions meet. We then observe a divergence of the nematic elastoresistivity approaching this putative bicritical point, indicating an emergent tetragonality in the critical behavior.

Discovery of a layered multiferroic compound Cu 1-x Mn 1+y SiTe 3 with strong magnetoelectric coupling

Multiferroic materials host both ferroelectricity and magnetism, offering potential for magnetic memory and spin transistor applications. Here, we report a multiferroic chalcogenide semiconductor Cu 1-x Mn 1+y SiTe 3 (0.04 ≤ x ≤ 0.26; 0.03 ≤ y ≤ 0.15), which crystallizes in a polar monoclinic structure (Pm space group). It exhibits a canted antiferromagnetic state below 35 kelvin, with magnetic hysteresis and remanent magnetization under 15 kelvin. We demonstrate multiferroicity and strong magnetoelectric coupling through magnetodielectric and magnetocurrent measurements. At 10 kelvin, the magnetically induced electric polarization reaches ~0.8 microcoulombs per square centimeter, comparable to the highest value in oxide multiferroics. We also observe possible room-temperature ferroelectricity. Given that multiferroicity is very rare among transition metal chalcogenides, our finding sets up a unique materials platform for designing multiferroic chalcogenides.

Purification, Crystallization, and Preliminary Crystallographic Studies of Human As(III) S-Adenosylmethionine Methyltransferase (hAS3MT)

Exposure to environmental arsenic is associated with serious of health issues such as cancer, diabetes and developmental delays in infants and children. In human liver, As(III) S-adenosylmethionine methyl transferase (hAS3MT) (EC 2.1.1.137) was proposed to be an detoxification process by methylation of inorganic arsenite into pentavalent methyl MAs(V) and dimethyl arsenite DMAs(V). More recently the first product was shown to be highly toxic and potentially carcinogenic trivalent methylarsenite (MAs(III)). Our studies are designed to elucidate the mechanism of AS3MT and its contribution to arsenic-related diseases. Here, in this paper, we report the first crystallization and preliminary X-ray diffraction analysis of the human AS3MT enzyme. The crystals belong to the monoclinic P12 1 1 space group with unit cell parameters of a = 135.03 Å, b = 260.44 Å, c = 279.03 Å, α = 90.00°, β = 93.36°, γ = 90.00°.

CEGANN: CRYSTAL EDGE GRAPH ATTENTION NEURAL NETWORK

SF-22-156 Machine learning (ML) models and applications in materials design and discovery typically involve the use of feature representations or descriptors followed by a learning algorithm that maps them to user desired properties of interest. Most popular mathematical formulation-based descriptors are not unique across atomic environments and suffer from transferability issues across different application domains and/or material classes. The CEGANN code provides a unified interface to facilitate material characterization across materials across multiple scales (from atomic to mesoscale) and diverse classes of materials ranging from metals oxides, non-metals, and even hierarchical materials such as zeolites and semi ordered materials such as mesophases. CEGANN implements a Graph Attention Network (GAT) type convolution architecture. The details of network architecture can be found in the paper https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2207.10168. The software comes with pretrained examples and dataset for the classification of the following representative systems: (1) Structure-level representation such as space group (2) Structural dimensionality (e.g., bulk, 2D, clusters etc.) (3) Grain boundary identification (4) Nucleation and growth of a zeolite polymorph (5) Characterization of binary mesophases and their phase transitions (6) Growth of ice. The code is written in python programming language.

Structure of the E. coli agmatinase, SPEB

Agmatine amidinohydrolase, or agmatinase, catalyzes the conversion of agmatine to putrescine and urea. This enzyme is found broadly across kingdoms of life and plays a critical role in polyamine biosynthesis and the regulation of agmatine concentrations. Here we describe the high-resolution X-ray crystal structure of the E . coli agmatinase, SPEB. The data showed a relatively high degree of pseudomerohedral twinning, was ultimately indexed in the P 3 1 space group and led to a final model with eighteen chains, corresponding to three full hexamers in the asymmetric unit. There was a solvent content of 38.5% and refined R/R free values of 0.166/0.216. The protein has the conserved fold characteristic of the agmatine ureohydrolase family and displayed a high degree of structural similarity among individual protomers. Two distinct peaks of electron density were observed in the active site of most of the eighteen chains of SPEB. As the activity of this protein is known to be dependent upon manganese and the fold is similar to other dinuclear metallohydrolases, these peaks were modeled as manganese ions. The orientation of the conserved active site residues, in particular those amino acids that participate in binding the metal ions and a pair of acidic residues (D153 and E274 in SPEB) that play a role in catalysis, are similar to other agmatinase and arginase enzymes and is consistent with a hydrolytic mechanism that proceeds via a metal-activated hydroxide ion.
