A database of refractive indices and dielectric constants auto-generated using ChemDataExtractor

The ability to auto-generate databases of optical properties holds great potential for advancing optical research, especially with regards to the data-driven discovery of optical materials. An optical property database of refractive indices and dielectric constants is presented, which comprises a total of 49,076 refractive index and 60,804 dielectric constant data records on 11,054 unique chemicals. The database was auto-generated using the state-of-the-art natural language processing software, ChemDataExtractor, using a corpus of 388,461 scientific papers. The data repository offers a representative overview of the information on linear optical properties that resides in scientific papers from the past 30 years. Public availability of these data will enable a quick search for the optical property of certain materials. The large size of this repository will accelerate data-driven research on the design and prediction of optical materials and their properties. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first auto-generated database of optical properties from a large number of scientific papers. We provide a web interface to aid the use of our database.

A perspective on the state of the art of photographic interpretation

Aerial photography and photographic interpretation are the cornerstone of remote sensing. Many interpretative techniques used on data from these more advanced or unconventional imaging systems are essentially extensions of techniques originally developed for the analysis of aerial photographic data. As research on the analysis and application of data from other than photographic imaging systems progresses, the role of the interpretation of aerial photography becomes more important. Any individual who wishes to practice the art of remote sensing data analysis must gain a thorough knowledge of the activities, elements and techniques of manual photographic/image interpretation. While the activities and elements of photo interpretation have remained essentially the same, technique development has continued to progress. Additional studies are proposed dealing with the basics of interactive processes.

A remote sensing applications update: Results of interviews with Earth Observations Commercialization Program (EOCAP) participants

Earth remote sensing is a uniquely valuable tool for large-scale resource management, a task whose importance will likely increase world-wide through the foreseeable future. NASA research and engineering have virtually created the existing U.S. system, and will continue to push the frontiers, primarily through Earth Observing System (EOS) instruments, research, and data and information systems. It is the researchers' view that the near-term health of remote sensing applications also deserves attention; it seems important not to abandon the system or its clients. The researchers suggest that, like its Landsat predecessor, a successful Earth Observing System program is likely to reinforce pressure to 'manage' natural resources, and consequently, to create more pressure for Earth Observations Commercialization (EOCAP) type applications. The current applications programs, though small, are valuable because of their technical and commercial results, and also because they support a community whose contributions will increase along with our ability to observe the Earth from space.

Evaluation of MARC for the analysis of rotating composite blades

The suitability of the MARC code for the analysis of rotating composite blades was evaluated using a four-task process. A nonlinear displacement analysis and subsequent eigenvalue analysis were performed on a rotating spring mass system to ensure that displacement-dependent centrifugal forces were accounted for in the eigenvalue analysis. Normal modes analyses were conducted on isotropic plates with various degrees of twist to evaluate MARC's ability to handle blade twist. Normal modes analyses were conducted on flat composite plates to validate the newly developed coupled COBSTRAN-MARC methodology. Finally, normal modes analyses were conducted on four composite propfan blades that were designed, analyzed, and fabricated at NASA Lewis Research Center. Results were compared with experimental data. The research documented herein presents MARC as a viable tool for the analysis of rotating composite blades.

Application of TURBO-AE to Flutter Prediction: Aeroelastic Code Development

The TURBO-AE program has been evaluated by comparing the obtained results to cascade rig data and to prediction made from various in-house programs. A high-speed fan cascade, a turbine cascade, a turbine cascade and a fan geometry that shower flutter in torsion mode were analyzed. The steady predictions for the high-speed fan cascade showed the TURBO-AE predictions to match in-house codes. However, the predictions did not match the measured blade surface data. Other researchers also reported similar disagreement with these data set. Unsteady runs for the fan configuration were not successful using TURBO-AE .

An Integrated and Collaborative Approach for NASA Earth Science Data

Earth science research requires coordination and collaboration across multiple disparate science domains. Data systems that support this research are often as disparate as the disciplines that they support. These distinctions can create barriers limiting access to measurements, which could otherwise enable cross-discipline Earth science. NASA's Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) is continuing to bridge the gap between discipline-centric data systems with a coherent and transparent system of systems that offers up to date and engaging science related content, creates an active and immersive science user experience, and encourages the use of EOSDIS earth data and services. The new Earthdata Coherent Web (ECW) project encourages cohesiveness by combining existing websites, data and services into a unified website with a common look and feel, common tools and common processes. It includes cross-linking and cross-referencing across the Earthdata site and NASA's Distributed Active Archive Centers (DAAC), and by leveraging existing EOSDIS Cyber-infrastructure and Web Service technologies to foster re-use and to reduce barriers to discovering Earth science data (http://earthdata.nasa.gov).

Earth observing system. Output data products and input requirements, version 2.0. Volume 2: Analysis of IDS input requirements

On 18 Jan. 1991, NASA confirmed 29 Inter-Disciplinary Science (IDS) teams, each involving a group of investigators, to conduct interdisciplinary research using data products from Earth Observing System (EOS) instruments. These studies are multi-disciplinary and require output data products from multiple EOS instruments, including both FI and PI instruments. The purpose of this volume is to provide information on output products expected from IDS investigators, required input data, and retrieval algorithms. Also included in this volume is the revised analysis of the 'best' and 'alternative' match data products for IDS input requirements. The original analysis presented in the August 1991 release of the SPSO Report was revised to incorporate the restructuring of the EOS platform. As a result of the reduced EOS payload, some of EOS instruments were deselected and their data products would not be available for IDS research. Information on these data products is also presented.

Visualization for Insight and Data Analysis in Energy Research

This talk explores how advanced visualization technologies are transforming analytical reasoning and knowledge discovery in energy research, drawing on recent work at the National Laboratory of the Rockies' Computational Science Center. Through a series of scientific case studies, we demonstrate how immersive and high-resolution visualization environments enable scientists and engineers to identify previously unseen patterns and features - insights that often remain hidden in traditional desktop-based analysis. By embedding richer information into interactive analytics tools, these approaches support the exploration of complex, multivariate parameter spaces, where interaction itself catalyzes understanding. Beyond capability, we emphasize the critical role of visualization design grounded in perception and cognition, showing how visual encodings directly influence analytical outcomes. Spanning applications from materials science to integrated energy systems, these visualization approaches accelerate innovation and improve decision-making by enabling deeper, more reliable insight into increasingly complex energy data.

NDMAS System and Process Description

The U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) has made a significant investment in research to develop the next generation of reactor technologies as well as to improve the performance and lengthen the life cycle of existing nuclear reactors. Data collected to demonstrate new concepts may also be used in the future to support licensing of these technologies. Provenance of these data must be preserved. The Nuclear Data Management and Analysis System (NDMAS) was established to manage and preserve data collected by fuels and materials research conducted by the high-temperature, gas-cooled reactor program. The scope of NDMAS is expanding to include other nuclear research programs that have the shared need to preserve the provenance of research data. Nuclear research funded by DOE is conducted by Idaho National Laboratory (INL), universities, other national laboratories, foreign research partners, and private companies. This research will generate a large amount of data from a variety of sources over a period of many years. Managing the data generated by the research and development projects presents a significant challenge for retaining data integrity and availability.

Scientific and Operational Requirements for TOMS Data

Global total ozone and sulfur dioxide data from the Nimbus 7 Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) instrument have applications in a broad range of disciplines. The presentations of 29 speakers who are using the data in research or who have operational needs for the data are summarized. Five sessions addressed topics in stratospheric processes, tropospheric dynamics and chemistry, remote sensing, volcanology, and future instrument requirements. Stratospheric and some volcanology requirements can be met by a continuation of polar orbit satellites using a slightly modified TOMS but weather related research, tropospheric sulfur budget studies, and most operational needs require the time resolution of a geostationary instrument.
