Computer program to simulate Raman scattering

A computer program is described for simulating the vibration-rotation and pure rotational spectrum of a combustion system consisting of various diatomic molecules and CO2 as a function of temperature and number density. Two kinds of spectra are generated: a pure rotational spectrum for any mixture of diatomic and linear triatomic molecules, and a vibrational spectrum for diatomic molecules. The program is designed to accept independent rotational and vibrational temperatures for each molecule, as well as number densities.

Spontaneous Raman scattering as a high resolution XUV radiation source

A type of high resolution XUV radiation source is described which is based upon spontaneous anti-Stokes scattering of tunable incident laser radiation from atoms excited to metastable levels. The theory of the source is summarized and two sets of experiments using He (1s2s)(1)S atoms, produced in a cw hollow cathode and in a pulsed high power microwave discharge, are discussed. The radiation source is used to examine transitions originating from the 3p(6) shell of potassium. The observed features include four previously unreported absorption lines and several sharp interferences of closely spaced autoionizing lines. A source linewidth of about 1.9 cm(-1) at 185,000 cm(-1) is demonstrated.

Stimulated Raman up-conversion of electromagnetic waves by a gyrating electron beam

A gyrating electron beam supports negative energy modes near the harmonics of electron-cyclotron frequency. An electromagnetic wave passing through such a beam parametrically up-converts into high-frequency electromagnetic modes separated from the pump frequency by the electron-cyclotron harmonics. The growth rate for this process varies directly as the oscillatory velocity of beam electrons caused by the pump and as square root of the beam density. It has a maximum at values of scattering angle close to 180 deg and is also implicitly dependent on the beam veocity and the cyclotron frequency of electrons. The effect of a cold electron component is to reduce the growth rate.

Ultrahigh pressures - Optical observations and Raman measurements of hydrogen and deuterium to 1.47 Mbar

Hydrogen and deuterium have been pressurized under static conditions to 1.47 Mbar, which is higher by a factor of 2 than the static data of Sharma et al. (1980). Measurements of the vibron indicate an initial increase and then a sharp decrease in frequency at pressures above 0.5 Mbar. At 1.14 Mbar the vibron frequency decreased to the zero-pressure value, and at 1.47 Mbar the frequency of the vibron in hydrogen is 90/cm below the value of the vibrational mode of the isolated molecule. This pronounced softening of the vibron suggests strengthened intermolecular interaction.
