Space station - The next logical step

NASA has been charged with the development, over the next decade, of a permanently manned space station in low earth orbit. The space station system will comprise a manned base and associated unmanned platforms; while one of the platforms will be in polar orbit, another (or several) platforms will, like the manned base, have an orbital inclination of 28.5 deg. Because it is permanent, the space station will have to be semiautonomous from its mission control center. NASA will take a number of steps to foster the commercial utilization of the space station, and one of the design goals of the project is the definition of astronaut facilities that are very 'customer friendly'. Reliance on a single, program-wide contractor has been deemed undesirable; several major aerospace manufacturers will instead distribute responsibility among themselves for the various modules constituting the craft.

Communications and logic systems at millimeter wave frequencies

Activities in materials development, lithography, FET experiments, and mixer diode fabrication are reported. In addition, articles are presented which address leakage effects in n-GaAs MESFET's and lateral nonuniform doping in GaAs MESFET's.

Communications and logic systems at millimeter wave frequencies, summary

During the contract period an AsCl3 epitaxial system used to provide buffer layers for FET structures was constructed. A submicron lithographic processes using deep U.V. techniques was developed and, employing these techniques, a working .5 micron gate device was produced. In addition, the development of submicron mixer diodes continued. The gettering of substrates of a technique to improve the mobility of ionimplantated layers was investigated. The result of this experiment showed a correlation between improved hall mobilities and gettered substrates. Finally, several theoretical studies are reported.

A formalization of commonsense reasoning based on fuzzy logic

The basic idea underlying the approach outlined in this paper is that commonsense knowledge may be regarded as a collection of dispositions, that is, propositions which are preponderantly, but not necessarily always, true. Technically, a disposition may be interpreted as a proposition with implicit fuzzy quantifiers, e.g., most, almost all, usually, often, etc. For example, a disposition such as Swedes are blond may be interpreted as most Swedes are blond. For purposes of inference from commonsense knowledge, the conversion of a disposition into a proposition with explicit fuzzy quantifiers sets the stage for an application of syllogistic reasoning in which the premises are allowed to be of the form Q A's are B's, where A and B are fuzzy predicates and Q is a fuzzy quantifier. In general, the conclusion yielded by such reasoning is a proposition which may be converted into a disposition through the suppression of fuzzy quantifiers.

Space Station - The next logical step

NASA is committed to the development of a permanently manned Space Station within a decade, in concert with European and Japanese space agencies. In addition to continuing scientific research, the Space Station will proceed with applied science and industrialization experiments. International cooperation opportunities arise within the Space Station program for users (in the definition of missions), for builders (in the development of station resources and capabilities), and operators (in the orbital maintenance of the Space Station).

Expertise and reasoning with possibility: An explanation of modal logic and expert systems

Recently systems of modal reasoning have been brought to the foreground of artificial intelligence studies. The intuitive idea of research efforts in this area is that in addition to the actual world in which sentences have certain truth values there are other worlds in which those sentences have different truth values. Such alternative worlds can be considered as possible worlds, and an agent may or may not have access to some or all of them. This approach to reasoning can be valuable in extending the expert system paradigm. Using the scheme of reasoning proposed by Toulmin, Reike and Janick and the modal system T, a scheme is proposed for expert reasoning that mitigates some of the criticisms raised by Schank and Nickerson.

Chaos as a part of logical structure in neurodynamics

It is proposed that chaotic attractors incorporated in neural net models can represent classes of patterns in the same way in which a set of static attractors represent unrelated patterns. Therefore, chaotic states of neuron activity are associated with higher level cognitive processes such as generalization and abstraction.

An experiment-based comparative study of fuzzy logic control

An approach is presented to the control of a dynamic physical system through the use of approximate reasoning. The approach has been implemented in a program named POLE, and the authors have successfully built a prototype hardware system to solve the cartpole balancing problem in real-time. The approach provides a complementary alternative to the conventional analytical control methodology and is of substantial use when a precise mathematical model of the process being controlled is not available. A set of criteria for comparing controllers based on approximate reasoning and those based on conventional control schemes is furnished.

Auto- and hetero-associative memory using a 2-D optical logic gate

An optical associative memory system suitable for both auto- and hetero-associative recall is demonstrated. This system utilizes Hamming distance as the similarity measure between a binary input and a memory image with the aid of a two-dimensional optical EXCLUSIVE OR (XOR) gate and a parallel electronics comparator module. Based on the Hamming distance measurement, this optical associative memory performs a nearest neighbor search and the result is displayed in the output plane in real-time. This optical associative memory is fast and noniterative and produces no output spurious states as compared with that of the Hopfield neural network model.

Associative-Memory Array Of Optical Logic Gates

Experimental optical associative-memory apparatus measures similarity or dissimilarity between input binary image and each of M binary images in memory. Uses Hamming distance as measure of dissimilarity, determines which (if any) of memory images closely or most closely resembles input image. Indicates this match by displaying image (e.g., recognized image or symbol, word, number, or other substitute image) in real time on output plane.

AiGERM: A logic programming front end for GERM

AiGerm (Artificially Intelligent Graphical Entity Relation Modeler) is a relational data base query and programming language front end for MCC (Mission Control Center)/STP's (Space Test Program) Germ (Graphical Entity Relational Modeling) system. It is intended as an add-on component of the Germ system to be used for navigating very large networks of information. It can also function as an expert system shell for prototyping knowledge-based systems. AiGerm provides an interface between the programming language and Germ.

Dissolving variables in connectionist combinatory logic

A connectionist system which can represent and execute combinator expressions to elegantly solve the variable binding problem in connectionist networks is presented. This system is a graph reduction machine utilizing graph representations and traversal mechanisms similar to ones described in the BoltzCONS system of Touretzky (1986). It is shown that, as combinators eliminate variables by introducing special functions, these functions can be connectionistically implemented without reintroducing variable binding. This approach 'dissolves' an important part of the variable binding problem, in that a connectionist system still has to manipulate complex data structures, but those structures and their manipulations are rendered more uniform.

The use of programmable logic controllers (PLC) for rocket engine component testing

Application of PLCs to the rocket engine component testing at a new Stennis Space Center Component Test Facility is suggested as an alternative to dedicated specialized computers. The PLC systems are characterized by rugged design, intuitive software, fault tolerance, flexibility, multiple end device options, networking capability, and built-in diagnostics. A distributed PLC-based system is projected to be used for testing LH2/LOx turbopumps required for the ALS/NLS rocket engines.
