SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego Verification Manual - Version 5.8

The SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego, henceforth referred to as Fuego, is the key element of the ASC fire environment simulation project. The fire environment simulation project is directed at characterizing both open large-scale pool fires and building enclosure fires. Fuego represents the turbulent, buoyantly-driven incompressible flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, combustion, soot, and absorption coefficient model portion of the simulation software. Using MPMD coupling, Scefire and Nalu handle the participating-media thermal radiation mechanics. This project is an integral part of the SIERRA multi-mechanics software development project. Fuego depends heavily upon the core architecture developments provided by SIERRA for massively parallel computing, solution adaptivity, and mechanics coupling on unstructured grids.

Probing turbulence with lasers and coherent light sources

Fluid and plasma turbulence consists of multi-scale interactions where the energy of the large scales is dissipated through a cascade to the smallest scales set by the microphysics. Turbulence and mixing can be detrimental to system performance, such as in inertial confinement fusion (ICF). Our current understanding of turbulence is mostly derived from studies of incompressible flows, where the intermediate-scaled eddies in the “inertial range” bridge the transfer of energy from the large eddies to the dissipative range, and that there is no communication between eddies of disparate scales. Whether a similar cascade process exists for compressible turbulence, however, remains to be seen; experiments have been limited by diagnostics and supersonic flow facilities. This project has focused on the development of techniques to measure the evolution of flows and microphysical transport properties using particle tracking velocimetry. This project has investigated three main areas: (1) particle-tracking experiments with x-ray radiography, (2) shock-particle interactions, (3) quantifying viscous effects on particles in shocked flows.

Thermal field reconstruction and compressive sensing using proper orthogonal decomposition

Model order reduction allows critical information about sensor placement and experiment design to be distilled from raw fluid mechanics simulation data. In many cases, sensed information in conjunction with reduced order models can also be used to regenerate full field variables. In this paper, a proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) inferencing method is extended to the modeling and compressive sensing of temperature, a scalar field variable. The method is applied to a simulated, critically stable, incompressible flow over a heated cylinder (Re = 1000) with Prandtl number varying between 0.001 and 50. The model is trained on pressure and temperature data from simulations. Field reconstructions are then generated using data from selected sensors and the POD model. Finally, the reconstruction error is evaluated across all Prandtl numbers for different numbers of retained modes and sensors. The predicted trend of increasing reconstruction accuracy with decreasing Prandtl number is confirmed and a Prandtl number/sensor count error matrix is presented.

Augmented reduced order models for turbulence

The authors introduce an augmented-basis method (ABM) to stabilize reduced-order models (ROMs) of turbulent incompressible flows. The method begins with standard basis functions derived from proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) of snapshot sets taken from a full-order model. These are then augmented with divergence-free projections of a subset of the nonlinear interaction terms that constitute a significant fraction of the time-derivative of the solution. The augmenting bases, which are rich in localized high wavenumber content, are better able to dissipate turbulent kinetic energy than the standard POD bases. Several examples illustrate that the ABM significantly out-performs L 2 -, H 1 - and Leray-stabilized POD ROM approaches. The ABM yields accuracy that is comparable to constraint-based stabilization approaches yet is suitable for parametric model-order reduction in which one uses the ROM to evaluate quantities of interests at parameter values that differ from those used to generate the full-order model snapshots. Several numerical experiments point to the importance of localized high wavenumber content in the generation of stable, accurate, and efficient ROMs for turbulent flows.
