Single and Dual-Solute Transport in Quaternary Ammonium-Functionalized Anion Exchange Membranes: Isolating the Impact of Water Volume Fraction
Membranes are essential components of photoelectrochemical CO 2 reduction cells (PEC-CRC), as they regulate solute transport and impact device efficiency. These cells are a promising approach for converting carbon dioxide into valuable chemicals. However, electrochemical reactions involve not just a single electrolyte; membrane transport typically includes multiple electrolytes. When a mixture of solutes is present, the presence of one solute in the membrane can impact the diffusion and sorption of other solutes. In complex systems where multiple solutes are diffusing simultaneously through a hydrated, dense polymer membrane, the resulting transport behavior is poorly understood. This study highlights the individual and two solute transport behavior of potassium formate, acetate, and bicarbonate ions in neutral membranes and quaternary ammonium-functionalized anion exchange membranes (AEMs) based on phenyl acrylate polymer backbones. By isolating the effect of water content, we emphasize how fixed charge density and solute-membrane interactions influence transport behavior. In neutral membranes, the diffusivity follows the order of potassium formate > potassium acetate > potassium bicarbonate. However, in AEMs, the order shifts due to changes in ion-membrane interactions, with potassium bicarbonate diffusivity surpassing that of potassium acetate. These results underscore the importance of ion exchange membranes and ion-membrane interaction in modulating transport properties, providing valuable insights for optimizing membranes in electrochemical applications.

Manganese effects on plant residue decomposition and carbon distribution in soil fractions depend on soil nitrogen availability
Recent studies have highlighted the critical role of manganese (Mn) in plant litter decomposition and soil organic carbon (C) cycling in forest ecosystems. Long term nitrogen (N) deposition and N fertilization can increase soil acidity and mobilize bioavailable Mn (Mn 2+ ) in soil. However, no studies have examined the interactive effect of N and Mn fertilization on litter decomposition and carbon distribution in agricultural soils, despite agroecosystems being subject to both N and Mn management. We hypothesized that increased soil N and Mn availability would accelerate plant residue decomposition and transfer of its C to mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM), and that the combined effect of Mn and N enrichment would be greater than the individual effect. Here, we conducted a laboratory incubation experiment by adding 13 C-labeled residue of perennial grass Glyceria striata (Lam.) to agricultural soils that had received 225 kg N ha –1 yr –1 for 27 years (N 1 ) and comparable soils that received no N (N 0 ). Before the experiment, these soils also received three levels of dissolved Mn 2+ , designated M 0 (no additional Mn), M 1 (50 mg kg –1 ), or M 2 (250 mg kg –1 ). We measured total CO 2 production as well as distribution of 13 C from the residue into CO 2 , particulate organic matter (POM), MAOM, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) over a 1-year period. Manganese amendments significantly increased CO 2 production from residue decomposition in the N 1 soil, but no such effect was observed in the N 0 soil. Manganese also accelerated the loss of residue-derived C from POM and DOC, but increased its recovery in MAOM. However, the positive effect of added Mn in decomposition and recovery in MAOM in the presence of N fertilization occurred only during the initial 30-day decomposition period, where M 2 showed a 12% increase in cumulative CO 2 production from residue, 8% increase in POM loss, and 43% increase in recovery of residue C in MAOM compared to M 0 . For M 1 , only CO 2 emission from residue was significantly higher than Mo during this period. At 365 days M 2 showed 8% increase in CO 2 production, 1% increase in POM loss, and 16% increase in recovery of residue C in MAOM compared to M 0 , but none of these were statistically significant (p < 0.05). This study adds to the growing evidence that increasing Mn availability enhances plant litter decomposition. However, the occurrence and magnitude of Mn-induced stimulation of decomposition is context specific. Further investigation with greater temporal resolution, involving a multitude of litter and soil types and including microbial compositional and functional characterization, is recommended to fully elucidate the interactive role of Mn and N on C cycling.

Proximate spin liquid and fractionalization in the triangular antiferromagnet KYbSe 2
The Heisenberg triangular-lattice quantum spin liquid and its phase transitions to nearby magnetic orders have received much theoretical attention, but clear experimental manifestations of these states are rare. Here we demonstrate that a spin-half delafossite material, namely, KYbSe 2 , shows close proximity to the triangular-lattice Heisenberg quantum spin liquid. Using neutron scattering, we identify a diffuse continuum with a sharp lower bound within the measured spectra. Applying entanglement witnesses to the data indicates multipartite entanglement spread between its neighbours, and an analysis of its magnetic-exchange couplings reveals close proximity to the theoretical quantum spin-liquid phase. The key features of the data are reproduced by Schwinger boson theory and tensor network calculations with a substantial next-nearest-neighbour coupling. The strength of the dynamical structure factor at the Brillouin-zone K point shows a scaling collapse down to 0.3 K, indicating the existence of a second-order quantum phase transition. Finally, comparing this with previous theoretical work suggests that the proximate phase at a larger next-nearest-neighbour coupling is a gapped $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ spin liquid, resolving a long-debated issue. Ordering the topological order in the fractional quantum Hall effect
Here, we discuss the possible topological order/topological quantum field theory of different quantum Hall systems. Given the value of the Hall conductivity, we constrain the global symmetry of the low-energy theory and its anomaly. Specifically, the one-form global symmetry and its anomaly are presented as the organizing principle of these systems. This information is powerful enough to lead to a unique minimal topological order (or a small number of minimal topological orders). Almost all of the known experimentally discovered topological orders are these minimal theories. Since this work is interdisciplinary, we made a special effort to relate to researchers with different backgrounds by providing translations between different perspectives.
Stability of the particle-hole Pfaffian state and the 5 2 -fractional quantum Hall effect
Here we present a method for the exact construction of the fully particle-hole symmetric Pfaffian (PH-Pfaffian) ground state and its charged excitations on a sphere. We adopt the Moore-Read state, but with a nonholomorphic pairing component as in previous studies, and project it to the lowest Landau level. We study the energetics as well as other properties of these states and find that in a pure system interacting with the Coulomb forces the PH-Pfaffian cannot compete with either the Moore-Read state or its particle-hole conjugate, the anti-Pfaffian state, as an explanation for the 5/2 effect.
