Topological Hall effect and magnetic states in the Nowotny chimney ladder compound Cr 11 Ge 19

In this report, we have investigated the magnetic and charge transport properties of single crystals of the Nowotny chimney ladder compound Cr 11 Ge 19 and mapped out a comprehensive phase diagram reflecting the complicated interplay between the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction, the dipolar interaction, and the magnetic anisotropy. We have identified a set of interesting magnetic phases and attributed a finite topological Hall effect to the recently discovered biskyrmion phase. These data also suggest the existence of an antiskyrmion state at finite fields for temperatures just below the magnetic ordering temperature T c as indicated by a distinct change in sign of the topological Hall effect. Above T c , we discovered a region of enhanced magnetic response corresponding to a disordered phase likely existing near the ferromagnetic critical point under small magnetic fields. Strong spin chirality fluctuations are demonstrated by the large value of the topological Hall resistivity persisting up to 1 T, which is most likely due to the existence of the DM interaction. We argue that changes to the topological Hall effect correspond to different topological spin textures that are controlled by magnetic dipolar and DM interactions that vary in importance with temperature

GW190814: Impact of a 2.6 solar mass neutron star on the nucleonic equations of state

Is the secondary component of GW190814 the lightest black hole or the heaviest neutron star ever discovered in a double compact-object system? This is the central question animating this paper. Covariant density functional theory provides a unique framework to investigate both the properties of finite nuclei and neutron stars, while enforcing causality at all densities. By tuning existing energy density functionals we were able to: (i) account for a 2.6 M ⊙ neutron star, (ii) satisfy the original constraint on the tidal deformability of a 1.4 M ⊙ neutron star, and (iii) reproduce ground-state properties of finite nuclei. Yet, for the class of models explored in this work, we find that the stiffening of the equation of state required to support supermassive neutron stars is inconsistent with either constraints obtained from energetic heavy-ion collisions or from the low deformability of medium-mass stars. Furthermore, we speculate that the maximum neutron star mass can not be significantly higher than the existing observational limit and that the 2.6 M ⊙ compact object is likely to be the lightest black hole ever discovered.

Resonant multiscalar production in the generic complex singlet model in the multi-TeV region

We develop benchmarks for resonant discalar production in the generic complex singlet scalar extension of the Standard Model (SM) with no additional symmetries, which contains two new scalars. These benchmarks maximize discalar resonant production modes at future 𝑝⁢𝑝 colliders: 𝑝⁢𝑝 → ℎ 2 → ℎ 1⁡ ℎ 1 , 𝑝⁢𝑝 → ℎ 2 → ℎ 1 ⁡ℎ 3 , and 𝑝⁢𝑝 → ℎ 2 → ℎ 3 ⁡ℎ 3 , where ℎ 1 is the observed SM-like Higgs boson and ℎ 2,3 are new scalars. The decays ℎ 2 → ℎ 1 ⁡ℎ 3 and ℎ 2 → ℎ 3 ⁡ℎ 3 may be the only way to discover ℎ 3 , leading to a discovery of two new scalars at once. Current LHC and projected future collider (HL-LHC, FCC-ee+HL-LHC, IL⁢C⁢500+HL-LHC) constraints on this model are used to produce benchmarks at the HL-LHC for ℎ 2 masses between 250 GeV and 1 TeV and a future 𝑝⁢𝑝 collider (FCC-hh) for ℎ 2 masses between 250 GeV and 12 TeV. We update the current LHC bounds on the singlet-Higgs boson mixing angle for these benchmarks. As the mass of ℎ 2 approaches the multi-TeV region, certain limiting behaviors of the maximum rates are uncovered due to theoretical constraints on the parameters. These limits, which can be derived analytically, are BR⁡(ℎ 2 → ℎ 1⁡ ℎ 1 ) → 0.25, BR⁡(ℎ 2 → ℎ 3 ⁡ℎ 3 ) → 0.5, and BR⁡(ℎ 2 → ℎ 1⁡ ℎ 3 ) → 0. It can also be shown that the maximum rates of 𝑝⁢𝑝 → ℎ 2 → ℎ 1 ⁡ℎ 1 and 𝑝⁢𝑝 → ℎ 2 → ℎ 3⁡ ℎ 3 approach the same value. Hence, all three ℎ 2 → ℎ 𝑖 ⁡ℎ 𝑗 decays are promising discovery modes for ℎ 2 masses at and below 𝒪⁡(1 TeV), while above 𝒪⁡(1 TeV) the decays ℎ 2 → ℎ 1 ⁡ℎ 1 and ℎ 2 → ℎ 3 ⁡ℎ 3 are more encouraging. We choose benchmark masses for ℎ 3 to produce a large range of decay signatures including multi-𝑏, multivector boson, and multi-SM-like Higgs production. As we will show, the behavior of the maximum rates leads to the surprising conclusion that in the multi-TeV region this model may be discovered in the Higgs quartet production mode via ℎ 2 → ℎ 3 ⁡ℎ 3 → 4⁢ℎ 1 decays before Higgs triple production is observed. The maximum di- and four Higgs production rates are similar in the multi-TeV range.

Shapiro steps observed in a two-dimensional Yukawa solid modulated by a one-dimensional vibrational periodic substrate

Depinning dynamics of a two-dimensional (2D) solid dusty plasma modulated by a one-dimensional (1D) vibrational periodic substrate are investigated using Langevin dynamical simulations. As the uniform driving force increases gradually, from the overall drift velocity varying with the driving force, four significant Shapiro steps are discovered. The data analysis results indicate that, when the ratio of the frequency from the drift motion over potential wells to the external frequency from the modulation substrate is close to integers, dynamic mode locking occurs, corresponding to the discovered Shapiro steps. In conclusion, around both termini of the first and fourth Shapiro steps, the transitions are found to be always continuous, however, the transition between the second and third Shapiro steps is discontinuous, probably due to the different arrangements of particles.

Probing C P Violation with Neutrino Disappearance Alone

The best way to probe C P violation in the lepton sector is with long-baseline accelerator neutrino experiments in the appearance mode: the appearance of ν e in predominantly ν μ beams. Here we show that it is possible to discover C P violation with disappearance experiments only, by combining JUNO for electron neutrinos and DUNE or Hyper-Kamiokande for muon neutrinos. While the maximum sensitivity to discover C P is quite modest ( 1.6 σ with 6 years of JUNO and 13 years of DUNE), some values of δ may be disfavored by > 3 σ depending on the true value of δ . Integrable symplectic maps with a polygon tessellation

Identifying integrable dynamics remains a formidable challenge, and despite centuries of research, only a handful of examples are known to date. In this article, we explore a distinct form of area-preserving (symplectic) mappings derived from the stroboscopic Poincaré cross section of a kicked rotator—an oscillator subjected to an external force periodically switched on in short pulses. The significance of this class of problems extends to various applications in physics and mathematics, including particle accelerators, crystallography, and studies of chaos. Notably, Suris's theorem constrains the integrability within this category of mappings, outlining potential scenarios with analytic invariants of motion. In this paper, we challenge the assumption of the analyticity of the invariant by exploring piecewise linear transformations on a torus ( T 2 ) and associated systems on the plane ( R 2 ), incorporating arithmetic quasiperiodicity and discontinuities. Introducing a new automated technique, we discovered previously unknown scenarios featuring polygonal invariants that form perfect tessellations and, moreover, fibrations of the plane or torus. This work reveals a novel category of planar tilings characterized by discrete symmetries that emerge from the invertibility of transformations and are intrinsically linked to the presence of integrability. Our algorithm relies on the analysis of the Poincaré rotation number and its piecewise monotonic nature for integrable cases, contrasting with the noisy behavior in the case of chaos, thereby allowing for clear separation. Some of the newly discovered systems exhibit the peculiar behavior of “integrable diffusion,” characterized by infinite and quasirandom hopping between tiles while being confined to a set of invariant segments. Finally, through the implementation of a smoothening procedure, all mappings can be generalized to quasi-integrable scenarios with suppressed volume occupied by chaotic trajectories, thereby opening doors to potential practical applications. Cyclic phase transition of substrate-modulated two-dimensional dusty plasma driven by gyroscopic forces

Langevin dynamical simulations are performed to investigate the formation of clusters and voids of a two-dimensional periodic substrate (2DPS)-modulated two-dimensional dusty plasma (2DDP) driven by a gyroscopic force. It is discovered that, as the frequency of the gyroscopic force decreases gradually, the substrate-modulated 2DDP undergoes the cyclic transition between the ordered cluster and void phases. Between the observed ordered cluster and void phases, the studied 2DDP exhibits a more uniform arrangement of particles. The discovered cyclic transition is attributed to the symmetry of the time-averaged potential landscape induced by the 2DPS in the reference frame of the moving particle, as confirmed by superimposing the particle locations on the effective potential landscape under various conditions.

Learning Conservation Laws in Unknown Quantum Dynamics

We present a learning algorithm for discovering conservation laws given as sums of geometrically local observables in quantum dynamics. This includes conserved quantities that arise from local and global symmetries in closed and open quantum many-body systems. The algorithm combines the classical shadow formalism for estimating expectation values of observable and data analysis techniques based on singular value decompositions and robust polynomial interpolation to discover all such conservation laws in unknown quantum dynamics with rigorous performance guarantees. Our method can be directly realized in quantum experiments, which we illustrate with numerical simulations, using closed and open quantum system dynamics in a ℤ 2 gauge theory and in many-body localized spin chains.

Simulating lattice fermion doubling with a Floquet drive

We consider a recently discovered mathematical correspondence between the spectra of a naively discretized lattice fermion and that of a periodically driven (i.e., Floquet) quantum system and enhance it into an infrared equivalence between the two systems. The equivalence can be framed as a duality relation, allowing us to simulate a two-flavor discrete-time fermion theory on the lattice side, where the two flavors arise from time discretization, using a single-flavor fermion theory on the Floquet side. Our demonstration establishes an equivalence between (i) the fermion content, (ii) the correlation functions, and consequently (iii) observables of the two theories in the infrared, going substantially beyond the previously discovered spectral equivalence. We also show how interactions may be incorporated into this enhanced infrared equivalence.

Increasing the bulk of the 1TEL–target linker and retaining the 10×His tag in a 1TEL–CMG2-vWa construct improves crystal order and diffraction limits

TELSAM-fusion crystallization has the potential to become a revolutionary tool for the facile crystallization of proteins. TELSAM fusion can increase the crystallization rate and enable crystallization at low protein concentrations, in some cases with minimal crystal contacts [Nawarathnage et al. (2022), Open Biol. 12 , 210271]. Here, requirements for the linker composition between 1TEL and a fused CMG2 vWa domain were investigated. Ala-Ala, Ala-Val, Thr-Val and Thr-Thr linkers were evaluated, comparing metrics for crystallization propensity and crystal order. The effect on crystallization of removing or retaining the purification tag was then tested. It was discovered that increasing the linker bulk and retaining the 10×His purification tag improved the diffraction resolution, likely by decreasing the number of possible vWa-domain orientations in the crystal. Additionally, it was discovered that some vWa-domain binding modes are correlated with scrambling of the 1TEL polymer orientation in crystals and an effective mitigation strategy for this pathology is presented.

Grey-Box System Identification of Grid-Forming Inverters

This paper demonstrates the use of grey-box system identification methods for simplifying and understanding the nonlinear power dynamics of grid-forming inverters (GFMs). The power and frequency outputs of complex high-order GFM models are fed into system identification software in order to fit them to a predetermined LTI system and learn system parameters such as (synthetic) inertia and droop constants. The same process is then run for a high-order synchronous generator model, and the outputs are fit to the same set of LTI equations. Simulation of a network of GFM inverters with diverse control architecture is also performed for the same process. The intent is threefold: first, to demonstrate the appropriateness of unified LTI models for describing the power and frequency dynamics of individual resources and connected networks, in order to facilitate analysis of larger heterogeneous networked systems; second, to discover the relationship between internal control parameters of GFMs and their externally observed values; and third, to validate that grey-box data-driven system identification techniques can be a valuable tool to discover the values of important parameters in the absence of explicit vendor models.

Impedance-Based Prediction of SSR-Generated Harmonics in Doubly-Fed Induction Generators

Doubly-fed induction generators (DFIGs) are prone to subsynchronous resonance (SSR) with series-compensated transmission lines and experiencing SSR-generated harmonics of wide-ranging magnitudes. This paper presents a large-signal impedance-based approach for the prediction of the magnitude of SSR-generated harmonics in DFIGs. Note that the large-signal impedance of a network shows variation in its impedance response with the magnitude of perturbation at its terminals. It is discovered in this paper that the impedance of a series-compen- sated transmission line starts changing with the magnitude of SSR because of the metal-oxide varistor-based protection of series capacitors in the line. The changing line impedance halts the growth of the SSR beyond a certain point, where the DFIG forms a limit-cycle mode and emits harmonics at the SSR frequency. The discovered role of the protection of series capacitors in SSR not only enables the prediction of SSR-generated harmonics but also can be used for the timely detection of an SSR event to avoid system disruption and sudden loss of bulk generation. The large- signal impedance-based prediction of SSR-generated harmonics in DFIG-based wind and hydro generators is demonstrated using numerical simulations of a 2.5-MVA, 690-V DFIG supplying to a series-compensated transmission line.

Parameter Reduction of Composite Load Model Using Active Subspace Method

Over the past decades, the increasing penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) has dramatically changed the power load composition in the distribution networks. The traditional static and dynamic load models can hardly capture the dynamic behavior of modern loads especially for fault-induced delayed voltage recovery (FIDVR) events. Thus, a more comprehensive composite load model with combination of static load, different types of induction motors, single-phase A/C motor, electronic load and DERs has been proposed by Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC). However, due to the large number of parameters and model complexity, the WECC composite load model (WECC CMLD) raises new challenges to power system studies. To overcome these challenges, in this paper, a cutting-edge parameter reduction (PR) approach for WECC CMLD based on active subspace method (ASM) is proposed. Firstly, the WECC CMLD is parameterized in a discrete-time manner for the application of the proposed method. Then, parameter sensitivities are calculated by discovering the active subspace, which is a lower-dimensional linear subspace of the parameter space of WECC CMLD in which the dynamic response is most sensitive. The interdependency among parameters can be taken into consideration by our approach. Finally, the numerical experiments validate the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed approach for WECC CMLD model.

Beyond Visual Analytics: Human-Machine Teaming for AI-Driven Data Sensemaking

"Detect the expected, discover the unexpected" was the founding principle of the field of visual analytics. This mantra implies that human stakeholders, like a domain expert or data analyst, could leverage visual analytics techniques to seek answers to known unknowns and discover unknown unknowns in the course of the data sensemaking process. We argue that in the era of AI-driven automation, we need to recalibrate the roles of humans and machines (e.g., a machine learning model) as teammates. We posit that by realizing human-machine teams as a stakeholder unit, we can better achieve the best of both worlds: automation transparency and human reasoning efficacy. However, this also increases the burden on analysts and domain experts towards performing more cognitively demanding tasks than what they are used to. In this paper, we reflect on the complementary roles in a human-machine team through the lens of cognitive psychology and map them to existing and emerging research in the visual analytics community. We discuss open questions and challenges around the nature of human agency and analyze the shared responsibilities in human-machine teams.

RecJ3/4-aRNase J form a Ubl-associated nuclease complex functioning in survival against DNA damage in Haloferax volcanii

Nucleases are strictly regulated and often localized in the cell to avoid the uncontrolled degradation of DNA and RNA. Here, a new type of nuclease complex, composed of RecJ3, RecJ4, and aRNase J, was identified through its ATP-dependent association with the ubiquitin-like SAMP1 and AAA-ATPase Cdc48a. The complex was discovered in Haloferax volcanii , an archaeon lacking an RNA exosome. Genetic analysis revealed aRNase J to be essential and RecJ3, RecJ4, and Cdc48a to function in the recovery from DNA damage including genotoxic agents that generate double-strand breaks. The RecJ3:RecJ4:aRNase J complex (isolated in 2:2:1 stoichiometry) functioned primarily as a 3′−5′ exonuclease in hydrolyzing RNA and ssDNA, with the mechanism non-processive for ssDNA. aRNase J could also be purified as a homodimer that catalyzed endoribonuclease activity and, thus, was not restricted to the 5′−3′ exonuclease activity typical of aRNase J homologs. Moreover, RecJ3 and RecJ4 could be purified as a 560-kDa subcomplex in equimolar subunit ratio with nuclease activities mirroring the full RecJ3/4-aRNase J complex. These findings prompted reconstitution assays that suggested RecJ3/4 could suppress, alter, and/or outcompete the nuclease activities of aRNase J. Based on the phenotypic results, this control mechanism of aRNase J by RecJ3/4 is not necessary for cell growth but instead appears important for DNA repair. IMPORTANCE Nucleases are critical for various cellular processes including DNA replication and repair. Here, a dynamic type of nuclease complex is newly identifiedidentifiedidentifiedin the archaeon Haloferax volcanii , which is missing the canonical RNA exosome. The complex, composed of RecJ3, RecJ4, and aRNase J, functions primarily as a 3′−5′ exonuclease and was discovered through its ATP-dependent association with the ubiquitin-like SAMP1 and Cdc48a. aRNase J alone forms a homodimer that has endonuclease function and, thus, is not restricted to 5′−3′ exonuclease activity typical of other aRNase J enzymes. RecJ3/4 appears to suppress, alter, and/or outcompete the nuclease activities of aRNase J. While aRNase J is essential for growth, RecJ3/4, Cdc48a, and SAMPs are important for recovery against DNA damage. These biological distinctions may correlate with the regulated nuclease activity of aRNase J in the RecJ3/4-aRNaseJ complex.

Two novel Patescibacteria: Phycocordibacter aenigmaticus gen. nov. sp. nov. and Minusculum obligatum gen. nov. sp. nov., both associated with microalgae optimized for carbon dioxide sequestration from flue gas

The functional roles of bacterial symbionts associated with microalgae remain understudied despite the importance of microalgae in biotechnology and environmental microbiology. 16S rRNA gene sequencing was conducted to analyze bacterial communities associated with two microalgae optimized for growth with flue gas containing 5%–10% CO 2 . Two dominant bacteria with no taxonomic classification beyond the class level (Paceibacteria) were discovered repeatedly in the most productive algal cultures. Long-read metagenomic sequencing was conducted to yield high-quality metagenomes, from which two novel species were discovered under the Seqcode (seqco.de/r:ywe1blo2), Phycocordibacter aenigmaticus gen. nov. sp. nov. and Minusculum obligatum gen. nov. sp. nov. The genus Phycocordibacter gen. nov. was proposed as the nomenclatural type of the family Phycocordibacteraceae fam. nov. and the order Phycocordibacterales ord. nov. Both bacteria possessed features typical of Patescibacteria such as reduced genomes (<800 kbp), lack of complete glycolysis and tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle pathways, and inability to synthesize amino acids. Instead, they rely on the reductive pentose phosphate pathway (Calvin cycle) for essential biosynthesis and redox balance. P. aenigmaticus may also rely on elemental sulfur oxidation (sdo), partial nitrite reduction (nirK), and sulfur-related amino acid metabolism (SAMe → SAH). Both bacteria were found in high relative abundance in cultures of Tetradesmus obliquus HTB1 (freshwater) and Nannochloropsis oceanica IMET1 (marine), suggesting a tight association with microalgae in various environments. The absence of full metabolic pathways for energy production suggests extreme metabolic limitations and obligate symbiosis, most likely with other bacteria associated with the microalgae.

Catabolism of β-5 linked aromatics by Novosphingobium aromaticivorans

ABSTRACT Aromatic compounds are an important source of commodity chemicals traditionally produced from fossil fuels. Aromatics derived from plant lignin can potentially be converted into commodity chemicals through depolymerization followed by microbial funneling of monomers and low molecular weight oligomers. This study investigates the catabolism of the β-5 linked aromatic dimer dehydrodiconiferyl alcohol (DC-A) by the bacterium Novosphingobium aromaticivorans . We used genome-wide screens to identify candidate genes involved in DC-A catabolism. Subsequent in vivo and in vitro analyses of these candidate genes elucidated a catabolic pathway composed of four required gene products and several partially redundant dehydrogenases that convert DC-A to aromatic monomers that can be funneled into the central aromatic metabolic pathway of N. aromaticivorans . Specifically, a newly identified γ-formaldehyde lyase, PcfL, opens the phenylcoumaran ring to form a stilbene and formaldehyde. A lignostilbene dioxygenase, LsdD, then cleaves the stilbene to generate the aromatic monomers vanillin and 5-formylferulate (5-FF). We also showed that the aldehyde dehydrogenase FerD oxidizes 5-FF before it is decarboxylated by LigW, yielding ferulic acid. We found that some enzymes involved in the β-5 catabolism pathway can act on multiple substrates and that some steps in the pathway can be mediated by multiple enzymes, providing new insights into the robust flexibility of aromatic catabolism in N. aromaticivorans . A comparative genomic analysis predicted that the newly discovered β-5 aromatic catabolic pathway is common within the order Sphingomonadales. IMPORTANCE In the transition to a circular bioeconomy, the plant polymer lignin holds promise as a renewable source of industrially important aromatic chemicals. However, since lignin contains aromatic subunits joined by various chemical linkages, producing single chemical products from this polymer can be challenging. One strategy to overcome this challenge is using microbes to funnel a mixture of lignin-derived aromatics into target chemical products. This approach requires strategies to cleave the major inter-unit linkages of lignin to release monomers for funneling into valuable products. In this study, we report newly discovered aspects of a pathway by which the Novosphingobium aromaticivorans DSM12444 catabolizes aromatics joined by the second most common inter-unit linkage in lignin, the β-5 linkage. This work advances our knowledge of aromatic catabolic pathways, laying the groundwork for future metabolic engineering of this and other microbes for optimized conversion of lignin into products.
