Using Eye Tracking to Elucidate the Mechanisms Underlying Stimulation-Enhanced Visual Target Detection

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a noninvasive form of brain stimulation that involves passing a weak electrical current between electrodes on the scalp to modulate underlying neural tissue. TDCS has been shown to modulate cognition in a variety of domains, including memory, attention, and visual processing. Prior work from our laboratory has shown positive effects of tDCS on learning to detect target objects hidden in complex naturalistic visual scenes and learn rules for categorizing images, though the mechanism for these benefits remains unknown. One possibility is that tDCS optimizes visual search by modulating visual attention or via the reduction in search errors. One method of quantifying visual attention is to use eye tracking to record search patterns to determine if and how visual search is adjusted under verum stimulation conditions. Eye tracking data allows classification of errors into error types, including sampling errors (failing to look in the relevant region), recognition errors (looking at the critical portion of a scene, but failing to recognize it as such as evidenced by visual fixation), and decision-making errors (fixating on the relevant portion of a scene, but making the wrong determination). Our results indicate that the benefit tDCS confers on visual search for targets stems from the reduction in decision-making errors when targets are present (Cohen’s d = 0.86). Also reported is a replication of previous findings showing a tDCS-dependent improvement in learning this task, learning score (Cohen’s d = 0.88); d’ (Cohen’s d = 1.00). This provides support for moving tDCS into the application space by pairing it with analysts who are concerned with the type of search error that is corrected via stimulation.

Impact of Regional and Seasonal Characteristics on Battery Electric Vehicle Operational Costs in the U.S.

This study investigates the operational cost competitiveness of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in the United States, considering regional climates, energy prices, and driving patterns. By comparing BEVs with plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), and the alternative use of BEVs and conventional vehicles (Convs), the analysis incorporates thermal dynamometer tests, real-world vehicle miles traveled (VMT), and state-specific energy prices. Using detailed simulations, the study evaluates energy consumption across varying temperatures and driving distances. The findings reveal that, while BEVs remain cost-effective for short trips in moderate climates, PHEVs are more economical for long-range trips and cold environments, due to the excessive cost of using external direct current fast chargers (DCFCs) and reduced BEV efficiency at low temperatures. HEVs are identified as the most cost-efficient option in regions like New England, characterized by high residential electricity prices. These insights are critical for shaping vehicle electrification strategies, particularly under diverse regional and seasonal conditions, and for advancing policies on alternative energy and fuels.

Integrating Data Centers and Grid Technologies at Scale

This presentation focuses on the challenge of integrating AI-driven data centers with the power grid at scale. It examines the AI data center capacity challenge and the role of new Medium Voltage Direct Current (MVDC) and other grid-enhancing technologies in enabling efficient and reliable power delivery. The session will highlight the National Laboratory of the Rockies' ARIES capabilities and planning tools, along with collaborative examples involving Verrus, Compass, and Schneider through the Agora test bed for grid-friendly data center evaluations, and ON. Energy for UPS evaluation. It will showcase the NLR Stable Grid Platform for studying oscillations caused by large-scale data centers, along with planning tools to assess grid security and reliability. Additionally, the presentation covers reconductoring strategies to increase grid capacity and explores innovative data center architectures, including the Advanced DC Architectures with Power-electronic Transformers (ADAPT) platform, which enables testing of complete DC architectures for data centers.

Levelized Cost of Charging Electric Vehicles

This data set includes the levelized cost of charging (LCOC) and lifetime fuel cost savings (LFCS) values as reported in "Levelized Cost of Charging of Electric Vehicles in the United States." Values are reported at the state and national levels for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). The data set also includes the four annual direct current fast charging (DCFC) station load profiles used to approximate the levelized cost of DCFC charging. Each profile provides 15-min resolved power requirements for one full year. Potassium plasma cell facilitates thermionic energy conversion process

Thermionic energy converter converts nuclear generated heat directly into high frequency and direct current output. It consists of a potassium plasma cell, a tantalum emitter, and a silver plated copper collector. This conversion process eliminates the steam interface usually required between the atomic heat source and the electrical conversion system.
