Integrated p-channel MOS gyrator

Several circuits can be integrated into one chip for applications which require more than one gyrator. They can also be integrated with other p-channel MOS circuits to eliminate need for external connections. Devices can operate at economical low-power levels, because they use FET amplifiers that do not degrade with decreases in supply.

A high-speed spectrograph shutter

Device can operate in close-open-close mode. Beam splitter placed behind static-slit assembly allows use of more than one camera. Each frame in particular series may be conveniently varied in exposure time and spacing. This can be done independent of other frames in the series. In ''open'' position, shutter transmits light over wide wavelength range.

Effect of timed secondary-air injection on automotive emissions

A single cylinder of an automotive V-8 engine was fitted with an electronically timed system for the pulsed injection of secondary air. A straight-tube exhaust minimized any mixing other than that produced by secondary-air pulsing. The device was operated over a range of engine loads and speeds. Effects attributable to secondary-air pulsing were found, but emission levels were generally no better than using the engine's own injection system. Under nontypical fast-idle, no-load conditions, emission levels were reduced by roughly a factor of 2.

Reliability improvement of 1 mil aluminum wire bonds for semiconductors, technical performance summary

The reliability of semiconductor devices as influenced by the reliability of wire bonds used in the assembly of the devices is investigated. The specific type of failure dealt with involves fracture of wire bonds as a result of repeated flexure of the wire at the heel of the bond when the devices are operated in an on-off mode. The mechanism of failure is one of induced fracture of the wire. To improve the reliability of a chosen transistor, one-mil diameter wires of aluminum with various alloy additions were studied using an accelerated fatigue testing machine. In addition, the electroprobe was used to study the metallurgy of the wires as to microstructure and kinetics of the growth of insoluble phases. Thermocompression and ultrasonic bonding techniques were also investigated.

Specimen mass measurement

The Skylab specimen mass measurement device was operated throughout the altitude test in close simulation of the 56-day Skylab mission. It performed operational specimen measurements well until it was passed out of the chamber for replacement of the specimen hold-down and was autoclaved prior to return. Fecal measurements were typically made with less than one percent error.

A microprocessor-controlled CCD star tracker

The STELLAR (Star Tracker for Economical Long Life Attitude Reference) utilizes an image sensing Charge-Coupled Device (CCD) operating under microprocessor control. This approach results in a new type of high-accuracy star tracker which can be adapted to a wide variety of different space flight applications through software changes only. The STELLAR determines two-axis star positions by computing the element and the interelement interpolated centroid positions of the star images. As many as 10 stars may be tracked simultaneously, providing significantly increased stability and accuracy. A detailed description of the STELLAR is presented along with measurements of system performance obtained from an operating breadboard model.

On the determination of series resistance and diode quality factor of solar cells

The series resistance and diode quality factor are used for evaluation of solar cell performance. These parameters are normally deduced from the terminal I-V characteristics under forward bias. The method produces a smaller series resistance and a larger value for diode quality factor than appropriate for the device when operating as a solar cell. It is suggested that the diode quality factor be determined from measured saturated photocurrent, open circuit voltage characteristics and the series resistance be measured with an r-f bridge or calculated from a measurement of the surface sheet resistance.

"Space slitter" for film or tape

Device cuts film or tape into strips by guiding film in channel under cutting blades. Device is operated by lifting pressure bar to insert blades into film. Film is then pulled through blades. Cutter has potential uses in advertising, commercial art, and publishing fields.

Microbial load monitor

Attempts are made to provide a total design of a Microbial Load Monitor (MLM) system flight engineering model. Activities include assembly and testing of Sample Receiving and Card Loading Devices (SRCLDs), operator related software, and testing of biological samples in the MLM. Progress was made in assembling SRCLDs with minimal leaks and which operate reliably in the Sample Loading System. Seven operator commands are used to control various aspects of the MLM such as calibrating and reading the incubating reading head, setting the clock and reading time, and status of Card. Testing of the instrument, both in hardware and biologically, was performed. Hardware testing concentrated on SRCLDs. Biological testing covered 66 clinical and seeded samples. Tentative thresholds were set and media performance listed.

Airborne infrared astronomical observations by Fourier transform spectroscopy

Infrared spectroscopic observations from NASA-operated aircraft constitute a rapidly maturing application of FTS methods initially developed for ground-based telescopes. Coupled to airborne telescopes up to 36 in. in diameter, these experiments are now producing new astronomical results as exciting and unexpected as those derived from Connes's first high resolution planetary observations at mountain-top observatories. This review examines the special problems of the IR spectral region that led to aircraft observatories and includes a brief survey of the facilities themselves and their modes of operation. The special problems of operating FTS devices on aircraft and the scientific results achieved with current capabilities are discussed. Finally, airborne observations are compared to the ultimate in high-altitude observing platforms: earth-orbiting cooled and uncooled telescopes carried by the Space Shuttle vehicle.

Applying the helium ionization detector in chromatography

High noise levels and oversensitivity of helium detector make flame-ionization and thermal-conductivity detectors more suitable for chromotography. Deficiencies are eliminated by modifying helium device to operate in saturation rather than multiplication mode. Result is low background current, low noise, high stability, and high sensitivity. Detector analyzes halocarbons, hydrocarbons, hydrogen cyanide, ammonia, and inorganics without requiring expensive research-grade helium.

The phototron: A light to RF energy conversion device

The phototron, a photoelectric device that converts light to radio frequency energy, is described. It is a vacuum tube, free electron, device that is mechanically similar to a reflex klystron with the hot filament cathode replaced by a large area photocathode. The device can operate either with an external voltage source used to accelerate the photoelectrons or with zero bias voltage; in which case the photokinetic energy of the electrons sustains the R.F. oscillations in the tuned R.F. circuit. One basic design of the phototron was tested. Frequencies as high as about 1 GHz and an overall efficiency of about 1% in the biased mode were obtained. In the unbiased mode, the frequencies of operation and efficiences are considerably lower. Success with test model suggests that considerable improvements are possible through design refinements. One such design refinement is the reduction of the length of the electron flight path.

The Strength of the Metal. Aluminum Oxide Interface

The strength of the interface between metals and aluminum oxide is an important factor in the successful operation of devices found throughout modern technology. One finds the interface in machine tools, jet engines, and microelectronic integrated circuits. The strength of the interface, however, should be strong or weak depending on the application. The diverse technological demands have led to some general ideas concerning the origin of the interfacial strength, and have stimulated fundamental research on the problem. Present status of our understanding of the source of the strength of the metal - aluminum oxide interface in terms of interatomic bonds are reviewed. Some future directions for research are suggested.
