Study Program to Determine the Acceleration Environment Capability of the GG159C Gas- Bearing Spinmotor Final Report

The goal of this contract was to determine the g environment under which the GC159C Gas-Bearing Spinmotor (GBSM) could reliably operate. This was fulfilled by building and testing of four GBSM's, a test fixture, and a "dummy" gyro. The test program was divided into two phases when a gas bearing improvement was required to withstand JPL shock requirement of 200 g. Phase I determined existing g capabilities and performance of the GC159C GBSM and gimbal-case structure. Phase II increased GBSM capability to meet required JPL g environments. Life tests were run on two GBSM's which were shocked at a high level to obtain bearing contact while rotating at their operating speed of 23,000 rpm. A third (nonoperating) GBSM was exposed to JPL maximum shock levels, and a fourth (nonoperating) GBSM was exposed to random vibration. Both nonoperating GBSM's were then subjected to life testing.

Scanning photometer system automatically determines atmospheric layer height

Two photometers, placed a given distance apart, determine the height of nonuniform luminous layers in a synchronous manner. Photometer outputs are correlated by a simple analog correlation computer to automatically give the luminous layer height. This system is used to determine visibility ceilings at airports.

Longitudinal Stability and Control Characteristics as Determined by the Rocket-Model Technique for an Inline, Cruciform, Canard Missile Configuration with a Low-Aspect-Ratio Wing Having Trailing-Edge Flap Controls for a Mach Number Range of 0.7 to 1.8

Two full-scale models of an inline, cruciform, canard missile configuration having a low-aspect-ratio wing equipped with flap-type controls were flight tested in order to determine the missile's longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics. Stability derivatives and control and drag characteristics are presented for a range of Mach number from 0.7 to 1.8. Nonlinear lift and moment curves were noted for the angle-of-attack range of this test (0 deg to 8 deg ). The aerodynamic-center location for angles of attack near 5 deg remained nearly constant for supersonic speeds at 13.5 percent of the mean aerodynamic chord; whereas for angles of attack near O deg, there was a rapid forward movement of the aerodynamic center as the Mach number increased. At a control deflection of O deg, the missile's response to the longitudinal control was in an essentially fixed space plane which was not coincident with the pitch plane as a result of the missile rolling. As a consequence, stability characteristics were determined from the resultant of pitch and yaw motions. The damping-in-pitch derivatives for the two angle-of-attack ranges of the test are in close agreement and varied only slightly with Mach number. The horn-balanced trailing-edge flap was effective in producing angle of attack over the Mach number range.

Early orbit determination scheme for the Juno space vehicle

The present status (1959-60) of the ABMA early orbit determination scheme for the Juno space vehicle is described. The design of the scheme was essentially influenced by three factors: its origin centered around postflight vehicle analysis, the flexibility required for accepting varied kinds of data, and the potential of highspeed computers concentrated in ABMA's Computation Laboratory. The scheme is outlined, the tracking stations participating are shortly described, and the physical layout and computational equipment are briefly mentioned. The evaluation techniques used for the various steps of the orbit determination are discussed in detail. Appendices describe briefly the principal coordinate systems used and characteristics of the digital computer programs.

Lunar soil coefficient of friction determined from Surveyor data and laboratory tests

A series of laboratory tests on simulated soils was conducted to evaluate some of these physical properties. Using soils similar to lunar soil composition, particle size distribution, and cohesion as determined from the Surveyor mission, the coefficient of friction and bulk density were evaluated by reproducing soils with the same force vs penetration characteristics as demonstrated at the Surveyor landing sites. The determination of soil coefficient of friction is presented in this paper; the soil density is treated separately in the previous paper’ of this report.

Flight-determined aerodynamic stability and control derivatives of the M2-F2 lifting body vehicle at subsonic speeds

Aerodynamic derivatives were obtained for the M2-F2 lifting body flight vehicle in the subsonic flight region between Mach numbers of 0.41 and 0.64 and altitudes of 7000 feet to 45,000 feet. The derivatives were determined by a flight time history curve-fitting process utilizing a hybrid computer. The flight-determined derivatives are compared with wind-tunnel and predicted values. Modal-response characteristics, calculated from the flight derivatives, are presented.

The experimental determination of atmospheric absorption from aircraft acoustic flight tests

A method for determining atmospheric absorption coefficients from acoustic flight test data is presented. Measurements from five series of acoustic flight tests were included in the study. The number of individual flights totaled 24: six Boeing 707 flights performed in May 1969 in connection with the turbofan nacelle modification program, eight flights from Boeing tests conducted during the same period, and 10 flights of the Boeing 747 airplane. The effects of errors in acoustic, meteorological, and aircraft performance and position measurements are discussed. Tabular data of the estimated sample variance of the data for each test are given for source directivity angles from 75 deg to 120 deg and each 1/3-octave frequency band. Graphic comparisons are made of absorption coefficients derived from ARP 866, using atmospheric profile data, with absorption coefficients determined by the experimental method described in the report.

Tracer techniques for urine volume determination and urine collection and sampling back-up system

The feasibility, functionality, and overall accuracy of the use of lithium were investigated as a chemical tracer in urine for providing a means of indirect determination of total urine volume by the atomic absorption spectrophotometry method. Experiments were conducted to investigate the parameters of instrumentation, tracer concentration, mixing times, and methods for incorporating the tracer material in the urine collection bag, and to refine and optimize the urine tracer technique to comply with the Skylab scheme and operational parameters of + or - 2% of volume error and + or - 1% accuracy of amount of tracer added to each container. In addition, a back-up method for urine collection and sampling system was developed and evaluated. This back-up method incorporates the tracer technique for volume determination in event of failure of the primary urine collection and preservation system. One chemical preservative was selected and evaluated as a contingency chemical preservative for the storage of urine in event of failure of the urine cooling system.

Determination of normal-shock position in a mixed compression supersonic inlet

Methods of determining inlet normal shock position from wall static pressure profiles were investigated. By using methods investigated in this report, it should be possible to control an inlet with less stability margin. Variation in inlet angle-of-attack caused drastic changes in pressure profile shape and wide variations in the angle of the shock plane with respect to the inlet axis. Thus, four sensors located around the circumference may be required to handle angle-of-attack and sideslip variations. One criterion would determine the shock position by comparing individual statics to a properly selected reference pressure.

Pyrotechnic hazards classification and evaluation program. Phase 2, segment 3: Test plan for determining hazards associated with pyrotechnic manufacturing processes

A comprehensive test plan for determining the hazards associated with pyrotechnic manufacturing processes is presented. The rationale for each test is based on a systematic analysis of historical accounts of accidents and a detailed study of the characteristics of each manufacturing process. The most hazardous manufacturing operations have been determined to be pressing, mixing, reaming, and filling. The hazard potential of a given situation is evaluated in terms of the probabilities of initiation, communication, and transition to detonation (ICT). The characteristics which affect the ICT probabilities include the ignition mechanisms which are present either in normal or abnormal operation, the condition and properties of the pyrotechnic material, and the configuration of the processing equipment. Analytic expressions are derived which describe the physical conditions of the system, thus permitting a variety of processes to be evaluated in terms of a small number of experiments.

Research to determine the role of gravity in neurosecretory physiology

In an effort to determine the effects of gravity in regulating the synthesis, transport, storage, and release of octopeptides from the hypothalamo-neurophypophyseal system, the teleost fresh water fish was studied. A labyrinthectomized fish was subjected to a gravitational orientation of -G sub z for three days. Results show the fish had reduced levels of adenyl cyclose activity in its kidneys when compared to labyrinthectomized and unoperated fish exposed to normal gravitational orientation (+G sub 2) for the same period of time. Efforts were also made to determine the presence of vasopressin in the neurophypophysis and peripheral target organs.
