Insights into storm direction effect on flood response

In this study, we investigate the directional influence of storm movement on catchment flood peak response using the synthetic circular basin. Due to the complexity in defining storm movements that require meteorological modeling, we adopt a novel approach of combining the basin rotation method (BRM) with a circular basin construct. A systematic basin rotation approach provides a proxy for the storm direction relative to the river network topology to study its hydrologic response. Using Stage-IV rainfall with 4-km by 1-hour resolution for 16 years period from 2003 to 2018 in Iowa, U.S., we systematically analyze consequent flood peak response due to storm directions (basin rotations) using a distributed hydrologic model called the Hillslope-Link Model (HLM). HLM has demonstrated the ability to reproduce observed streamflow for real river basins studied in Iowa. The hydrologic simulation results show that the BRM can quantify the relationship between the rainstorm direction and catchment hydrologic response. Also, the maximum flood peak response is strongly dependent on the interaction of the peak of the rainstorm with the peak of the width function. The results indicate significant differences in runoff volume and runoff peak and their interannual variability due to rainstorm direction. The study has important implications for flood frequency predictions and developing flood resilience and watershed management strategies, particularly due to changing storm tracks under a warming climate.

Highly silanized cellulose biocomposites for sustainable insulation materials

Microfibrillated lignocellulose networks, derived from agricultural byproducts, represent an environmentally friendly biogenic material production due to their abundant availability to circular bioeconomy and inherent carbon sink in life cycle analysis. Yet, its vulnerability to moisture and flammability, coupled with challenges in creating highly reinforced insulation materials, poses challenges for the carbon-zero green building sector. Here we address these challenges with a new concept of in-situ grafting polymerization of nanoporous silica in pre-formed lignocellulosic fiber networks. The seamlessly integrating nanoporous silica with cellulose through hydrogen bonding networks enabled us to prepare highly reinforced biogenic composites for green building insulations. A high reinforcement biocomposite with hierarchal arrangements of nanoporous silica within the cellulose network exhibits remarkable attributes. It boasts a thermal conductivity of 24.2 mW·m –1 ·K –1 , a flexural modulus of 942 MPa, and soundproofing with a 20.8 % noise reduction, as well as the fire resistance characterized by an extended time to ignition and a reduced peak heat release rate of 144 kW·m –2 at 35 kW·m –2 of incident radiant heat flux. Furthermore, it demonstrates a reduced water absorption capacity, dropping from 5.12 g·g –1 to 0.75 g·g –1 . Altogether, this study opens the new pathways towards sustainable carbon-zero building materials in the context of circular bioeconomy.

A systematic analytical framework for multi-source municipal solid waste characterization for energy recovery

Advancing municipal solid waste (MSW) management from disposal-oriented practices toward circular, value-driven systems requires standardized methodologies capable of identifying material composition and resource recoverable potential at the point of generation. Despite extensive research, MSW characterization remains fragmented due to inconsistences in sampling methodologies, waste sorting categories, and temporal coverage across previous studies which limit cross-site comparability, reproducibility, and constrain the reliable evaluation of potential resource recovery pathways. This lack of consistency has hindered the development of a unified framework for MSW characterization and resource assessment. This study introduces a standardized, field-validated protocol for MSW sampling and composition analysis that ensures consistent, traceable data across diverse waste sources. The protocol integrates randomized spatial sampling, systematic material sorting, and controlled subsampling for multi-site and multi-season field campaigns. Validation included MSW collection from residential, grocery, restaurant, and school MSW streams across five U.S. states, including Maryland, Idaho, Virginia, Ohio, and Mississippi, to demonstrate the protocol’s ability to identify source-based composition patterns relevant to resource recovery applications. Grocery and restaurant streams were dominated by food waste and high-moisture organics, while school waste contained higher paper content and residential waste showed greater heterogeneity. Aggregation into energy-relevant fractions highlighted practical recovery pathways via anaerobic digestion or gasification, supporting data-driven planning, policy, and circular economy strategies for sustainable waste management across waste sources.

Specific resonance mode enhancement and suppression using non-uniform polarization of piezoelectric wafers: Theory and experiments

In this work, we present experimental demonstration of specific resonance mode enhancement and suppression in circular and rectangular piezoelectric wafers with engineered non-uniform polarization profiles. The polarization profiles are designed based on the electromechanical impedance response of non-uniformly polarized wafers as obtained from the theory. The circular wafers are fabricated with non-uniform polarization profiles that involve a central polarized region surrounded by an unpolarized region. The radius of the polarization zone is designed based on the condition for specific mode enhancement obtained from the electromechanical impedance response of non-uniformly polarized wafers. We actually show how the condition can not only be used to enhance but also to suppress electromechanical resonances. Two kinds of wafers are designed and fabricated to specifically suppress second and third radial modes respectively. Similarly, rectangular wafers are designed with two different kinds of non-uniform polarization profiles — the first of which enhances the second in-plane extensional mode in the impedance spectrum and the second polarization profile suppresses all the electromechanical resonances pertaining to the in-plane extensional modes and selectively excites only the in-plane bending modes. The proposed approach of using non-uniformly polarized wafers finds application in designing multi-frequency sensors/transducers, frequency-tuned receivers, acoustic beamforming, and other non-traditional applications such as information storage.

Demonstration and technoeconomic analysis of dodecanol production from acetate using metabolically engineered Escherichia coli

In a circular bioeconomy, the one-way conversion of petroleum to chemicals and CO 2 is replaced with processes that reduce CO 2 to energy carriers and useful materials that are returned to CO 2 upon combustion. A circular bioeconomy that relies on photosynthesis to generate sugars as the chief energy carrier and precursor to chemical building blocks has yet to overcome many recalcitrant aspects of plant-based photosynthesis, namely, high feedstock costs, arable land scarcity, food competition, and fertilizer overuse. Acetate is a potential sustainable energy carrier because it can be produced from CO 2 either electrocatalytically or by acetogens via the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway. Here, in this work, we conducted a metabolic engineering study of Escherichia coli 's ability to convert acetate into dodecanol as a model oleochemical product. We performed techno-economic and life cycle analyses to determine break-even points with alternative fossil fuel-based strategies and identified critical process performance parameters for supporting an industrial acetate-based bioprocess. These analyses showed that oleochemical yield is the primary driver of minimum oleochemical selling price and carbon intensity. Therefore, to increase yield on acetate, we deleted the aceBAK operon, which facilitates funneling of acetate into biomass instead of product. We performed additional strain engineering to increase flux towards dodecanol and increase acetate uptake. Finally, we demonstrated increased yield in controlled bioreactors, improving from 13% of the maximum theoretical yield to 37%. Rigorous uncertainty analyses assuming a range of market conditions and future technological performances resulted in 88% and 37% of simulated scenarios having lower carbon intensities than fossil fuel-based routes and lower minimum selling prices than the market price.

Kinetic-ballooning-mode turbulence in low-average-magnetic-shear equilibria

In this work, kinetic-ballooning-mode (KBM) turbulence is studied via gyrokinetic flux-tube simulations in three magnetic equilibria that exhibit small average magnetic shear: the Helically Symmetric eXperiment (HSX), the helical-axis Heliotron-J and a circular tokamak geometry. For HSX, the onset of KBM being the dominant instability at low wavenumber occurs at a critical value of normalized plasma pressure $\beta ^{\rm KBM}_{\rm crit}$ that is an order of magnitude smaller than the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) ballooning limit $\beta ^{\rm MHD}_{\rm crit}$ when a strong ion temperature gradient (ITG) is present. However, $\beta ^{\rm KBM}_{\rm crit}$ increases and approaches the MHD ballooning limit as the ITG tends to zero. For these configurations, $\beta ^{\rm KBM}_{\rm crit}$ also increases as the magnitude of the average magnetic shear increases, regardless of the sign of the normalized magnetic shear. Simulations of Heliotron-J and a circular axisymmetric geometry display behaviour similar to HSX with respect to $\beta ^{\rm KBM}_{\rm crit}$ . Despite large KBM growth rates at long wavelengths in HSX, saturation of KBM turbulence with $\beta > \beta _{\rm crit}^{\rm KBM}$ is achievable in HSX and results in lower heat transport relative to the electrostatic limit by a factor of roughly five. Nonlinear simulations also show that KBM transport dominates the dynamics when KBMs are destabilized linearly, even if KBM growth rates are subdominant to ITG growth rates.

Interpretation of high-harmonic fast-wave propagation in the scrape-off layer of NSTX-U as a geometrically bounded-waveguide mode

This paper revisits the onset of high-harmonic fast-wave (HHFW) propagation in the scrape-off layer (SOL) plasma of the NSTX/NSTX-U spherical tokamak, motivated by past HHFW heating and current drive experiments and modelling. Previously, the fast-wave propagation in the SOL was correlated with the opening (suppression) of the fast-wave right-hand cutoff layer in front of the antenna. In this work, the SOL propagation is interpreted as a geometric waveguide mode guided by the SOL geometry, whose radial width can be comparable to the wave’s perpendicular wavelength in the HHFW regime. A two-dimensional circular model is first employed using full-wave solvers to characterise the poloidal eigenmode structures and to clarify their relationship to annulus resonance. By progressively adding a tokamak-like magnetic-field configuration, starting from a uniform axial field, the effects of magnetic-field gradients and pitch on the SOL waveguide mode are characterised. The poloidal mode numbers supported by the SOL plasma agree well with analytic estimates, indicating that an anisotropic plasma in a bounded geometry selectively supports and amplifies the resonant poloidal mode number. Additionally, two-dimensional axisymmetric NSTX-U simulations demonstrate that the SOL eigenmode features identified in the circular model persist in the experimentally relevant configurations. A control approach based on lengthening the wave perpendicular wavelength relative to the SOL width, including a higher magnetic (B)-field operation, is discussed. The analysis here shows the key role of a bounded geometry in interpreting HHFW eigenmode coupling and propagation in the NSTX-U SOL plasma.

Catalytic Upgrading of Pyrolysis Condensables from Postconsumer Polyolefins Using HZSM-5

The conversion of plastic wastes to monomeric olefins is an attractive means for achieving a plastic circular economy. In our study, a fluidized bed reactor converts post-consumer waste high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP) to mostly condensed pyrolysis waxes and some oils, preventing carbon loss to gases. The pyrolysis condensables were upgraded to light olefins (C 2 –C 5 ) at carbon yields greater than 76 wt % using the HZSM-5 zeolite catalyst at a post pyrolysis process that employed a micropyrolyzer. These results were comparable to olefin monomer yields from direct ex situ catalytic pyrolysis of the original waste plastics without condensing the vapors, highlighting the potential applicability of this approach in plastic waste recycling. Our results suggest that a centralized catalytic upgrading facility fed by pyrolysis condensables sourced from distributed thermochemical processing plants is a promising pathway to a circular economy. Such an approach enables utilization of available catalytic cracking infrastructure while focusing on setting up distributed thermochemical processing plants close to material recovery facilities. As a result, the energy-dense pyrolysis waxes are more suitable for transportation, contributing to the overall scalability and economic viability of the proposed distributed approach.

Chemically and Mechanically Recyclable Vitrimers from Carbon Dioxide-Based Polycarbonates

Designing thermoset materials with dynamic crosslinks is an important strategy to mitigate rising global carbon dioxide emission levels. The development of polymers from sustainable feedstocks, with efficient manufacturing methods, for high-value applications, and with circular end-of-use solutions is essential for advancing material technologies. One approach involves exploiting carbon dioxide itself as feedstock to create high performance, sustainable materials, by enchaining 50 mol% CO2 via copolymerization with epoxides to yield polycarbonates. This work describes the synthesis, end-functionalization, and curing of poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) and poly(cyclohexene carbonate) (PCHC) into beta-hydroxy ester vitrimers. These vitrimers demonstrate the ability to be mechanically reprocessed up to 3 times with retention of the material’s properties through dynamic transesterification exchange reactions. The polycarbonate vitrimers with gel fractions exceeding 90 % exhibit high tensile strength (> 50 MPa) and Young’s modulus (> 2 GPa), achieved by varying repeat unit structure in the polymer backbone from the low Tg PPC to the more rigid high Tg PCHC structures. Owing to an entropically favorable chain back-biting mechanism, the network chains can be cleaved and depolymerized into cyclic small molecules. In the case of PCHC, this process enables repolymerization back to polycarbonates with 69 wt.% CO2 retention through life-cycles. The promising mechanical performance and recyclability of these CO2-based polycarbonate vitrimers indicate their potential for sustainable, high-performance materials, paving the way for future innovations in circular polymer technologies and carbon capture utilization.

Resonant Chiral Effects in Nonlinear Dielectric Metasurfaces

We study the resonant enhancement of linear and nonlinear chiroptical effects in planar silicon metasurfaces with an in-plane asymmetry supporting multipolar Mie resonances and quasi-bound states in the continuum (quasi-BICs). We demonstrate theoretically and observe in experiment the pronounced linear circular dichroism at the quasi-BIC resonances originating from the interaction of modes with the substrate. We further find that both local field enhancement and third-harmonic signal are large for Mie resonances and some quasi-BIC modes due to the critical coupling. We demonstrate experimentally a strong nonlinear chiroptical response associated with high efficiency of the third-harmonic generation and large nonlinear circular dichroism varying from +0.918 ± 0.049 to –0.771 ± 0.004 for the samples with different asymmetries. We reveal the nonreciprocal nature of nonlinear chirality governed by the microscopic symmetry of nonlinearities and macroscopic symmetries of the meta-atom and metasurface lattice. Here, we believe our results suggest a general strategy for engineering nonlinear chiroptical response in dielectric resonant metasurfaces.

C–H Functionalization of Polyolefins to Access Reprocessable Polyolefin Thermosets

Upcycling plastic waste into reprocessable materials with performance-advantaged properties would contribute to the development of a circular plastics economy. Here, we modify branched polyolefins and postconsumer polyethylene through a versatile C–H functionalization approach using thiosulfonates as a privileged radical group transfer functionality. Cross-linking the functionalized polyolefins with polytopic amines provided dynamically cross-linked polyolefin networks enabled by associative bond exchange of diketoenamine functionality. A combination of resonant soft X-ray scattering and grazing incidence X-ray scattering revealed hierarchical phase morphology in which diketoenamine-rich microdomains phase-separate within amorphous regions between polyolefin crystallites. The combination of dynamic covalent cross-links and microphase separation results in useful and improved mechanical properties, including a ~4.5-fold increase in toughness, a reduction in creep deformation at temperatures relevant to use, and high-temperature structural stability compared to the parent polyolefin. The dynamic nature of diketoenamine cross-links provides stress relaxation at elevated temperatures, which enabled iterative reprocessing of the dynamic covalent polymer network with little cycle-to-cycle property fade. Finally, the ability to convert polyolefin waste into a reprocessable thermoformable material with attractive thermomechanical properties provides additional optionality for upcycling to enable future circularity.

Topology-Accelerated and Selective Cascade Depolymerization of Architecturally Complex Polyesters

Despite considerable recent advances already made in developing chemically circular polymers (CPs), the current framework predominantly focuses on CPs with linear-chain structures of different monomer types. As polymer properties are determined by not only composition but also topology, manipulating the topology of the single-monomer-based CP systems from linear-chain structures to architecturally complex polymers could potentially modulate the resulting polymer properties without changing the chemical composition, thereby advancing the concept of monomaterial product design. To that end, here, we introduce a chemically circular hyperbranched polyester (HBPE), synthesized by a mixed chain-growth and step-growth polymerization of a rationally designed bicyclic lactone with a pendent hydroxyl group (BiLOH). This HBPE exhibits full chemical recyclability despite its architectural complexity, showing quantitative selectivity for regeneration of BiLOH, via a unique cascade depolymerization mechanism. Moreover, distinct differences in materials properties and performance arising from topological variations between HBPE, hb-PBiLOH, and its linear analogue, l-PBiLOH, have been revealed where generally the branched structure led to more favorable interchain interactions, and topology-amplified optical activity has also been observed for chiral (1S, 4S, 5S)-hb-PBiLOH. More intriguingly, depolymerization of l-PBiLOH proceeds through an unexpected, initial topological transformation to the HBPE polymer, followed by the faster cascade depolymerization pathway adopted by hb-PBiLOH. Overall, these results demonstrate that CP design can go beyond typical linear polymers, and rationally redesigned, architecturally complex polymers for their unique properties may synergistically impart advantages in topology-augmented depolymerization acceleration and selectivity for exclusive monomer regeneration.

Layer Number Dependence of Chirality and Spin Polarized Lifetime in Chiral 2D Halide Perovskites

Chiral metal halide perovskite semiconductors (CMHS) are fascinating semiconductors with unique chiroptical properties and spin-polarized charge transport. Achieving long spin lifetimes and high carrier mobility concurrently is essential to realize the true potential of CMHS in manipulating charge, spin, and light. While conventional monolayer n = 1 CMHS possess appreciable anisotropy factors of circular dichroism (g CD ) and photoluminescence (g lum ), imparting chirality to quasi-2D CMHS (n > 1) with enhanced carrier mobilities is underexplored. Herein, we systematically investigate the layer number (n-value) dependence and emergent trade-offs in chiroptical properties, spin-relaxation times, and carrier mobilities in chiral quasi-2D (R/S-MPEA) 2 MA n-1 Pb n I 3n+1 single crystals and thin films (R/S-MPEA: R/S-β-methylphenylethylammonium; MA: methylammonium; n = 1–3). Films with n = 2 exhibited the highest g CD of 8 × 10 –3 , an order of magnitude larger than their n = 1 and n = 3 counterparts. On the other hand, n = 3 films demonstrated enhanced spin lifetimes up to 15 ps along with increased carrier mobility up to 11.6 cm 2 V –1 s –1 . As a result, photodiode-type photodetectors based on n = 3 CMHS reveal high specific detectivity and superior discrimination of circularly polarized light, outperforming n = 1 and 2. These findings highlight the potential of quasi-2D CMHS as tunable, high-performance platforms with longer spin lifetime and diffusion length, enabling new functionalities.

Dynamically Chiral Expanded Helicenes

Expanded helicenes are a class of chiral nanographenes with a screw-shaped skeleton and a larger diameter than their classical ortho-fused counterparts. The flexibility of this internal cavity results in helicenes that are often difficult to isolate as single enantiomers. Expanded helicenes are therefore an intriguing target for exploration of dynamic chirality, a phenomenon resulting from introduction of chiral auxiliaries to control structure in a racemic system. This contribution describes installation of chiral amine substituents into the cavity of a diformyl expanded [11]-helicene by mild, efficient, and reversible imine condensations. The resulting helicenes display strong molar circular dichroism up to |Δε| = 300 M -1 cm -1 and absorption dissymmetry factors of |g abs | = 0.010. The magnitude of circular dichroism can be varied by using different chiral amine substituents, which is correlated to the diastereomeric ratios of the helicenes. In conclusion, this is the first instance of dynamic chirality being used to observe a chiroptic response in expanded helicenes and is a significant synthetic improvement over methods which require conventional enantiomer resolution.

X-ray study of ferroic octupole order producing anomalous Hall effect

Recently found anomalous Hall, Nernst, magnetooptical Kerr, and spin Hall effects in the antiferromagnets Mn 3 X (X = Sn, Ge) are attracting much attention for spintronics and energy harvesting. Since these materials are antiferromagnets, the origin of these functionalities is expected to be different from that of conventional ferromagnets. Here, we report the observation of ferroic order of magnetic octupole in Mn 3 Sn by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism, which is only predicted theoretically so far. The observed signals are clearly decoupled with the behaviors of uniform magnetization, indicating that the present X-ray magnetic circular dichroism is not arising from the conventional magnetization. We have found that the appearance of this anomalous signal coincides with the time reversal symmetry broken cluster magnetic octupole order. Our study demonstrates that the exotic material functionalities are closely related to the multipole order, which can produce unconventional cross correlation functionalities.

Switchable planar chirality and spin texture in highly ordered ferroelectric hybrid perovskite domains

Chiral organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites offer a promising platform for developing non-linear chiro-optical applications and chiral-induced spin selectivity. Here, we show that achiral hybrid perovskites that have highly ordered ferroelectric domains with orthogonal polarization exhibit planar chirality, as manifested by second harmonic generation with strong circular dichroism. Interestingly, the handedness of the second harmonic generation circular dichroism response can be alternatingly switched between orthogonally polarized domains and domain walls. To correlate the origin of planar chirality in these domains, atom-resolved atomic force microscopy is used to reveal distinct arrangements of atomic rows in these ferroelectric crystals that indicate planar symmetry breaking. Remarkably, a large SHG anisotropy factor of 0.41 is measured at the domain wall. Additionally, spatially resolved two-photon photoluminescence excitation measurement provide evidence of larger Rashba spin-splitting in these chiral ferroelectric domains compared to domain-free areas. Our discoveries of domain-dependent planar chirality and spin texture hold great promise for advancement of domain-specific chiro-optical applications.

Spin switchable optical phenomena in Rashba band structures through intersystem crossing in momentum space in solution-processing 2D-superlattice perovskite film

Spin-switchable phenomena are a critical element for the development of spintronic and chiroptic devices. Herein we combine a 2D-superlattice perovskite (4,4-DFPD2PbI4) film with a ferromagnetic cobalt (Co) layer to form a multiferroic perovskite/Co interface, and demonstrate spin-switchable circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) between right-handed σ+ and left-handed σ− polarizations. When the ferromagnetic spins of Co at the Co/perovskite interface are altered between positive and negative magnetic field directions, the CPL from the 2D-superlattice perovskite switches from σ+ to σ− polarization. The magnetic field effects present a unique method to confirm that CPL is generated by the circular-orbital momentum of light-emitting excitons within Rashba band structures, eliminating artifacts involving structural birefringence. Our polarized neutron reflectometry measurements confirm a super long-range spin-orbit interaction occurring in the 2D-superlattice perovskite films. The temperature dependence of spin-switchable phenomenon indicates an extraordinarily long orbital polarization lifetime, reaching microseconds at room temperature and milliseconds at 5 K.

Enantioselective Se lattices for stable chiroptoelectronic processing media

Chiroptoelectronic devices are crucial for applications in quantum computing, spin optical communications, and magnetic recording. However, the limited efficiency and low stability of conventional circularly polarized light (CPL)-sensing materials have restricted their broader use. Here, we introduce atomic chiral Se nanorod (NRs) films as broadband CPL detectors, leveraging the intrinsic chirality and stability of Se nanocrystals. We also perform incident circular polarization (ICP)-Raman optical activity (ROA) to explore the chiroptical activity of the large-area films. The Se NRs thin films detected CPL across a broad range from ultraviolet (UV) to short-wavelength infrared (SWIR), with a responsivity dissymmetry factor of up to 0.4, maintaining high stability under ambient conditions for longer than 13 months. CPL-sensitive Se NRs with intrinsic chirality have potential applications in chiral photonic synapses, chiral spin devices, and CPL-sensitive photocatalysts. ICP-ROA mapping also advances the analysis of 2D chiral materials.
