Para-particle oscillator simulations on a trapped-ion quantum computer

Deformed oscillators allow for a generalization of the standard fermions and bosons, namely, for the description of para-particles. Such particles remain hypothetical and unobserved in nature; yet, they can model physical phenomena, such as topological phases of matter. Here, we report the digital quantum simulation of para-particle oscillators by mapping para-particle states to the state of a qubit register, which allows us to identify the para-particle oscillator Hamiltonian as an XY model and further digitize the system onto a universal set of gates. In both instances, the gate depth grows polynomially with the number of qubits used. To establish the validity of our results, we experimentally simulate the dynamics of para-fermions and para-bosons, demonstrating full control of para-particle oscillators on a quantum computer. Furthermore, we compare the overall performance of the digital simulation of dynamics of the driven para-Fermi oscillator to a recent analog quantum simulation result.

Potentials of mean force fail to describe chemical bond-breaking in solution

Many liquid phase studies assume that the potential energy surfaces of reacting molecules are the same as in the gas phase, neglecting complex solvent dynamics that can completely alter the nature of chemical reactivity. Even studies that include solvent effects typically only consider them in an average, equilibrium way as part of a potential of mean force (PMF). In this work, we use mixed quantum/classical simulations to compare how equilibrium and non-equilibrium solvent motions affect the photodissociation of a simple diatomic molecule, NaK + , in liquid tetrahydrofuran. A PMF analysis shows that as the excited-state molecule dissociates with the solvent at equilibrium, the bonding electron remains associated with K + at short bond distances but eventually localizes on Na + at the end of dissociation. When we examine non-equilibrium dynamical photodissociation trajectories, however, we find that they fall into three distinct categories: about a quarter of them have the bonding electron mainly associated with Na + , another quarter stay mainly associated with K + , and about half have the bonding electron shared roughly equally between the two ions. The results show that equilibrium PMFs cannot accurately describe the dynamics of bond-breaking chemical reactions in solution because there is insufficient time for the solvent to reach equilibrium on the time scale over which bond dissociation occurs. Furthermore, our analysis shows that the solvent coupling between the electronic energy surfaces is similar at and away from equilibrium, suggesting that other factors, such as solute velocity-driven solvent memory effects, play a more important role in explaining the failure of the equilibrium PMF to predict the non-equilibrium dynamics.

Predicting the viscoplastic response of a crystallizing fluoropolymer using transient network theory

We employ a molecular theory of dynamic polymer networks to describe the viscoplastic response of rubbery FK-800, a thermoplastic copolymer of chlorotrifluoroethylene and vinylidene fluoride, over a broad range of thermal histories. The kinetics of crystallization at different annealing temperatures was modeled using a modified Avrami equation, whose parameters were found to evolve through simple relationships over the full temperature range of the rubbery state. By fitting experimental compression data, we discovered predictable trends for the physical parameters in our mechanical model over its full range of crystallinities (up to ≈20%) and provided insights based on molecular-level physics to justify them. Using this, an end-to-end model was developed to predict the yielding and post-yield behavior of rubbery FK-800 for arbitrary thermal histories. The model successfully predicted the highly nonlinear evolution of characteristic mechanical signatures (stiffness, yield point, post-yield drop) throughout the crystallization process. A statistical analysis of variance test was employed to determine that the measured variations in the mechanical behavior of rubbery FK-800 are primarily dictated by its fractional crystallinity, regardless of its exact thermal history.

Interference microscopy study of the preplasma formed on an iron target surface exposed to high-power femtosecond laser pulses

The characteristic scale of spread of the plasma formed on the surface of a bulk iron target irradiated by a femtosecond laser pulse with an intensity of 10{sup 16} W cm{sup −2} is measured by time-resolved interference microscopy using femtosecond pulses emitted by a Cr : forsterite laser system with an intensity contrast of 10{sup 7}. The chosen technique is demonstrated to be efficient in such measurements. It is shown experimentally that, as a result of laser pulse impact, the displacement of a plasma layer with a density exceeding critical does not exceed 30 nm. (paper)

Influence of saturable absorber saturation power, modulation depth and relaxation time on pulse parameters of a soliton fibre laser

The influence of the saturable absorber saturation power, modulation depth and relaxation time on the energy and shape of fibre soliton laser pulses has been studied by numerical simulation. The results suggest that the use of a saturable absorber with a lower saturation power in a fibre laser ensures pulsed lasing onset at a lower gain. The fibre laser pulse energy decreases as the saturation power of the absorber or the relaxation time of its open state increases at a constant gain coefficient. In addition, increasing the absorber saturation modulation depth at a constant gain coefficient has been shown to reduce the pulse peak power and energy. (control of laser radiation parameters)

Possibility of reducing nonlinear distortions of a frequency response of a gas ring laser with a periodic alternating frequency bias

We report a theoretical study of the dependence of the beat frequency of counterpropagating waves on the rotation velocity in a gas ring laser with a periodic alternating frequency bias. Rectangular biases of two types are considered: with constant amplitude and with periodic amplitude modulation. We have found dynamic zones for locking-in the counterpropagating wave frequencies and determined deviations of the frequency response from the ideal one that arise when measuring frequency nonreciprocities, close in magnitude to the amplitude of an alternating frequency bias. It is shown that in the case of a rectangular bias with periodic amplitude modulation, nonlinear distortions of the frequency response can be reduced by an order of magnitude. (paper)

Effect of elastic anisotropy on thermally induced distortions of a laser beam in single cubic syngony crystals with radial cooling. Part I

We have studied thermally induced distortions of a beam in single cubic syngony crystals of all symmetry groups with an anisotropic elastic stiffness tensor. The arithmetic mean and the difference between the thermally induced phase incursions of eigenpolarisations, as well as the angle of incidence of these polarisations, are calculated for a long rod and a thin disk with radial cooling under uniform volume pumping of the active element. The position of the specific crystal orientations unrelated to its symmetry elements is investigated. The effective values of the thermo-optical constant Q in two specific orientations, as well as the thermo-optical constant P in an arbitrary orientation, are found. (invited paper)

Control over pulsed operation modes of an erbium-doped fibre laser passively mode-locked via nonlinear polarisation rotation

We have experimentally demonstrated the possibility of controlling pulse generation modes of an erbium-doped fibre ring laser operating in the anomalous dispersion regime and passively mode-locked via nonlinear polarisation rotation. It has been shown that individual adjustment of the pump power and intracavity polarisation controllers leads to changes in pulse generation mode, without changing the cavity. We have evaluated the key spectral, temporal and energetic characteristics of the observed pulse generation modes. (control of laser radiation parameters. active media)

Second-harmonic generation in zinc blende crystals under combined action of femtosecond optical and strong terahertz fields

The influence of a short intense (with an electric field strength up to 250 kV cm{sup −1}) terahertz (THz) pulse on the generation of second harmonic (SH) of Ti : sapphire laser radiation in crystals of zinc blende type (InAs and GaAs), characterised by nonzero bulk quadratic susceptibility, is investigated. It is experimentally shown for InAs(100) that, in the case of s-polarised first and second harmonics, an application of s-polarised THz field changes significantly the SH signal. The THz field-induced azimuthal dependence of the SH signal is in good agreement with the results of theoretical calculation within a phenomenological approach. The dependence of the SH signal on the delay time between the optical and THz pulses is investigated. This dependence for the GaAs crystal repeats the envelope of the THz pulse intensity, whereas in the case of InAs crystal there is a significant discrepancy, caused by the nonlinear dynamics of strong THz field in InAs. Kinetics of the luminescence decay of Fe{sup 2+} impurity centres in polycrystalline ZnSe upon excitation by an electron beam

The kinetics of the decay of the luminescence of Fe{sup 2+} ions is measured at nitrogen temperature in polycrystalline ZnSe excited by a short pulse of accelerated electrons. The time dependence of the luminescence intensity differs from the exponential one, observed upon excitation of luminescence by a short light pulse. The obtained nonexponential dependence is theoretically described. The explanation is based on the quenching effect of the excited state of the Fe{sup 2+} ion by free electrons of the volume charge of the current of accelerated electrons in the sample (Auger effect). It was shown that the relaxation of the volume charge after the electron-accelerating voltage is removed makes a significant contribution to the decay kinetics of the impurity luminescence. (paper)

Multifrequency stimulated Raman scattering of light in a calcite single crystal

Using pulses of multifrequency stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in calcite, nonlinear photoluminescence in a stilbene molecular crystal is excited. When multifrequency SRS is excited by the radiation of a Nd{sup 3+} : YAG laser with a wavelength of 1064 nm, eleven anti-Stokes components are observed in the visible spectrum with an average frequency shift of 1086 cm{sup −1} between them. Using the second harmonic of the Nd {sup 3+} : YAG laser radiation allowed three anti-Stokes and four Stokes components to be recorded. The large spectral range of the frequency comb facilitated effective reduction in the duration and increase in the intensity of the radiation pulse of multifrequency SRS. BaGa{sub 2}GeS{sub 6} and BaGa{sub 2}GeSe{sub 6} crystals for nonlinear optical frequency conversion

We analyse the functional capabilities of new crystals, BaGa{sub 2}GeS{sub 6} (BGGS) and BaGa{sub 2}GeSe{sub 6} (BGGSe), which are used for nonlinear optical frequency conversion in their transparency range. The wavelengths at which maximum conversion efficiencies can be obtained and the tuning range for difference-frequency generation are found. It is shown that there are wavelength combinations at which the effective nonlinearity coefficient varies only slightly in a wide frequency band. (nonlinear optical phenomena)

Effect of focused nanosecond laser pulse irradiation on microtribological properties of diamond-like films

We have examined the effect of focused nanosecond laser pulses on the formation and tribological properties of microstructures in the form of a matrix of craters produced in a – C : H : Si : O diamond-like films (DLFs), both undoped and doped with tungsten. The studies are performed by scanning probe microscopy (SPM) using SPM probes of standard design with a tip and probes without a tip (tipless-type probes). A special procedure is developed for assessing the wettability (contact angle) of individual sections of the laser-induced microstructure by the local adhesion force. According to estimates, the material inside the crater becomes softer and more hydrophobic as a result of laser irradiation. This is manifested to the greatest extent in tungsten-doped DLFs, where the crater walls are arranged like terraces formed by ‘nanoflakes’, i.e. grains of the substance. Scanning of microstructures with a tipless probe in the regime of lateral force microscopy demonstrates a decrease in friction in the crater area. Soft X-ray and EUV emission spectra of beryllium plasma produced by neodymium-glass laser radiation with broad frequency and angular spectra

We present the results of an experimental study of soft X-ray (SXR) and extreme ultraviolet emission spectra of the plasma produced by exposing a plane solid beryllium target to laser radiation with broad frequency and angular spectra. SXR lines up to 1s – 9p of Be IV as well as the plasma continuum are recorded for a laser focal-spot intensity of 5.3 × 10{sup 13} W cm{sup −2}. To model the SXR beryllium plasma spectra, simulations are carried out using the INDHAUS programme and the FLYCHK code in the framework of local thermodynamic equilibrium model, which agree nicely with experimentally obtained results. Peculiarities of the formation of photonic nanojets by a matrix of dielectric microtoroids

We report the results of theoretical modelling of photonic nanojets (PNJs) formed by laser radiation scattering on a single-layer ordered assembly of dielectric microtoroids placed on the surface of a transparent matrix (silicone film). Using the method of computational electrodynamics (FDTD), the main PNJ parameters (length, width, peak intensity) are analysed under the conditions of mutual influence of the light fields of neighbouring microparticles. It is shown that the main factor affecting the PNJ characteristics under study is the spatial configuration of the radiation-scattering particle, namely, the internal diameter of its cross section. It is found that for certain configurations of toroid placement in a cluster, a PNJ ensemble is implemented with parameters significantly better than those for a single toroid. (paper)

Heat transfer in water under laser heating through fibres for endovenous laser coagulation

We report the results of studying heat transfer in water heated by a cw laser with wavelengths of 1.55 and 1.94 μm through optical fibres with end-face and radial outputs. It is shown that, depending on the power and wavelength of the radiation, heat transfer is implemented via convection, bubble boiling, or explosive boiling and occurs asymmetrically, mainly in the forward − upward direction for the fibre with the end-face output and upward for the radial output.
