On an invariance property of acoustic waveguides

The acoustic power transmitted by a variable-area duct section which carries a steady subsonic flow is investigated under the conditions of both upstream- and downstream-propagating incident plane waves. It is found that the ratio of the power transmitted by incident waves moving against the flow to the power transmitted by incident waves moving with the flow is equal to the ratio of the difference between the Mach number and unity to the square of the sum of the Mach number and unity.

Convolution using guided acoustooptical interaction in thin-film waveguides

Interaction of two antiparallel acoustic surface waves (ASW) with an optical guided wave has been investigated theoretically as well as experimentally to obtain the convolution of two ASW signals. The maximum time-bandwidth product that can be achieved by such a convolver is shown to be of the order of 1000 or more. The maximum dynamic range can be as large as 83 dB.

Propagation along azimuthally magnetized ferrite-loaded circular waveguides

The paper describes the modal dispersion characteristics of electromagnetic waves traveling along the azimuthally magnetized ferrite-loaded coaxial transmission line and the ferrite-loaded wire. The modal dispersion curves are used to determine the pass and stop bands of normal propagation. Boundary-value problems were solved with Bolle-Heller functions. The dispersion characteristics of transverse electric modes are presented as plots of the normalized propagation constant vs the normalized frequency.

Optical fiber waveguide sagnac interferometer. Phase 1: Multiturn one meter diameter, single mode

A rotating ring interferometer was constructed using a 100 meters of single mode optical fiber wound on a crystal cylinder. A 20 inch diameter fiber interferometer gyroscope was built and its sensitivity was evaluated. Major noise sources were identified and improvements for the next phase of development were determined. The accuracy of .01 of a fringe can be improved to .0001 by the removal of the noise source.

Investigation of laser induced parametric interactions in optical waveguides and fibers

Experimental and theoretical aspects of the laser pump depletion characteristics in an optical fiber due to stimulated Raman scattering, and stimulated Brillouin scattering were studied. A review is presented of research in fiber transmission accompanied by stimulated scattering. Results of experimental work with tunable dye lasers and argon lasers are presented. The spectral profiles of the laser pump and its transmitted light through the fiber are given.

A theory of stationary long waves. III - Quasi-normal modes in a singular waveguide

The present paper deals with the fundamental issue of whether one can treat waves as normal modes when critical surface, where the phase speed of the wave matches the zonal wind speed, are present. In particular the question of whether a Rossby critical level (such as the zero-wind line for stationary waves) is absorbing or reflecting is raised and subsequently addressed. It is found that the critical level is never totally absorbing; Rossby waves are partially reflected even if the critical layer is dominated by dissipative processes. The relevance of nonlinearity in planetary-scale Rossby wave critical layers is also discussed and it is found to be the dominant mechanism. With the relative magnitudes of nonlinearity versus viscosity relevant to the earth's atmosphere it is found that the steady-state critical level should be almost perfectly reflecting to incident Rossby waves. Consequently, normal-mode solutions can be found; the quantization condition for these waves is also derived.

Ultrapure glass optical waveguide development in microgravity by the sol-gel process

The alkali-borosilicate system was selected as the glass system for the preparation of ultrapure low loss glasses suitable for optical communication. The effect of different oxide contents on the absorption loss was critically reviewed. One composition was chosen to develop the gel preparation procedure in the alkali-borosilicate system. In addition, several procedures for the preparation of gels based on two different approaches were developed. The influence of different preparation parameters were investigated qualitatively. Several conclusions are drawn from the results.

Wave scattering and guidance by dielectric waveguides with periodic surfaces

The extended-boundary-condition method is used to solve the wave scattering and guidance by a stratified medium with a periodic surface. First, the transition matrix for two sets of Flocquet waves incident from above and below a periodic surface separating the two media is derived. The results are applied to the diffraction of an incident plane wave by a multilayered medium having a periodic surface. The theoretical results can easily be applied to the guidance problem for which the complex guiding constant of the periodic structure is obtained. Numerical results for both the scattering and the guidance problems are obtained. The theory is compared with experiment for metallic gratings with surface-plasmon excitations. The calculated guiding constants of a thin film with a periodic sinusoidal surface are also compared with other numerical methods.

Coupled parallel waveguide semiconductor laser

The operation of a new type of tunable laser, where the two separately controlled individual lasers are placed vertically in parallel, has been demonstrated. One of the cavities ('control' cavity) is operated below threshold and assists the longitudinal mode selection and tuning of the other laser. With a minor modification, the same device can operate as an independent two-wavelength laser source.

Improved Waveguide Laser Array

Improved structure for integrated array of AlxGa1-xAs diode lasers causes array to oscillate predominantly in fundamental supermode (with all units at same phase), thereby producing intense, narrow light beam. New structure differs from older ones in that gain in spaces between laser channels is approximately equal to gain in channels.

Fundamental mode oscillation of a buried ridge waveguide laser array

An eight-element phase-locked array of index-guided separate confinement ridge AlGaAs diode lasers is fabricated. In this array the absorption of light in the region between lasers is negligible and the gain profile across the array is nearly uniform. Unlike most other arrays, this array oscillates in its fundamental mode. Stable radiation patterns of near diffraction-limited single narrow beam with 1.6 deg width are obtained. The beam width approaches the theoretical limit for the present array structure.
