Extinction Monitoring of Pulsed Proton Beams Using FPGA-Based Peak Detection

The Mu2e experiment at Fermilab imposes stringent requirements on the elimination of out-of-time beam in its pulsed proton beam - a requirement known as "extinction". We present a method to measure the out-of-time particle rates to calculate the level of extinction in the inter-pulse gaps. The proposed method utilizes an array of quartz Cherenkov radiators and photomultiplier tubes to detect particles scattered from a vacuum chamber in the M4 transfer beamline at Fermilab. The measurement will employ a new μTCA-based FPGA system for data acquisition and signal processing, utilizing real-time peak detection algorithms to count scattered beam particles. By integrating data over many transfers, the time profile of the out-of-time beam will be resolved to fractional levels relative to that of the in-time beam. These results are compared with G4beamline simulations to validate models of beam transport, dynamics, and extinction, providing critical input for optimizing beam delivery to Mu2e.

2020 LANL Contributions to the BATS Test in WIPP

The DOE Office of Nuclear Energy (DOE-NE) repository research and development program seeks to provide a sound technical basis for multiple viable disposal options, increase confidence in the robustness of generic disposal concepts, and develop science and engineering tools needed to support disposal concept implementation. Sandia, Los Alamos, and Lawrence Berkeley National labs are conducting research into salt, which includes the Brine Availability Test in Salt (BATS) field test at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP), a DOE Office of Environmental Management facility. BATS is leveraging the existing infrastructure associated with the WIPP to advance science informing generic disposal concepts. BATS is an ongoing heated borehole experiment being conducted in the WIPP underground. The goal of this experiment is to reduce the uncertainty associated with spent nuclear fuel disposition in geologic salt formations. The BATS experiments is designed to accomplish this by increasing our understanding of brine migration in salt, assessing damaged zones from mining and drilling, simulating a post-closure environment, confirming salt properties, and providing data for model validation. Phased testing for generic salt repository R&D was proposed in 2015. Subsequently, borehole thermal testing was developed as a first step in this process. This document summarizes the work conducted on the BATS experiment during fiscal year 2020 with an emphasis on the contributions by Los Alamos National Lab.

TRUST Testing Procedure Documentation

The TRUST testbed was designed and fabricated to conduct vibration testing and validate the behavior of hyper-elastic foams in a pre-loaded condition. The main goals of this testbed design were to ensure symmetry, proper instrumentation alignment and mounting, simplified geometry to make the data analysis validation process more straightforward, and to apply and monitor the applied pre-load. Based off of the test parameters, a shaker system was purchased. The baseplate was designed to mount directly to the bolt holes provided on the top of the shaker table. It was determined that the specimens will be cylindrical and vary in thickness from 2-10mm. The baseplate riser, center-mass, and testbed cap were designed to be cylindrical to make alignment about the center axis more straightforward. It was determined to fabricate the parts previously mentioned using Aluminum 6061-T6 due to its stiffness in order to reduce the likelihood of the stiff material impacting the data being collected for the foam specimens. The design concept used to apply the pre-load to the testbed was a through bolt/nut configuration. A through hole was included in each piece of the testbed, specimens, and instrumentation large enough to allow for 1/8” clearance between the through bolt and each of these pieces. This was imperative to avoid causing friction and complicating the validation model. A load cell was then purchased and used to measure the pre-load being applied to the testbed. It was also required to collect data for 3 axes at 3 different locations 120° apart on the center-mass. This configuration was required to be placed on the cylindrical face and toward the top and bottom of the center-mass. Slots were milled out in the middle of each sensor block with tight tolerances for mounting each of the accelerometers at 120° apart. This same approach was taken to mount 2 accelerometers on the baseplate at 180° apart. Holes were milled out of the corners of each accelerometer mounting slot to relieve the corner and allow for a flat edge at the back of each slot. Sensor blocks were mounted into the center-mass using 6-32 bolts at the required locations. This initial testbed design was fabricated at the TA53 machine shop.

Preliminary Test Design and Plan for a Canister Deposition Field Demonstration

This report provides a high-level test plan for deploying three commercial 32PTH2 spent nuclear fuel (SNF) canisters inside NUHOMS Advanced Horizontal Storage Modules (AHSM) from Orano (formerly Transnuclear Inc.). The details contained in this report represent the best designs and approaches explored for testing as of this publication. Given the rapidly developing nature of this test program, some of these plans may change to accommodate new objectives or adapt in response to conflicting requirements. The goal of the testing is to collect highly defensible and detailed surface deposition measurements from the surface of dry storage systems in a marine coastal environment to guide chloride-induced stress corrosion crack (CISCC) research. To facilitate surface sampling, the otherwise highly prototypic dry storage systems will not contain SNF but rather will be electrically heated to mimic the thermal-hydraulic environment. Instrumentation throughout the canister, storage module, and environment will provide an extensive amount of information for the use of model validation. Manual sampling over a comprehensive portion of the canister surface at regular time intervals will offer a high-fidelity quantification of the conditions experienced in a harsh yet realistic environment.

An Overview of Argonne’s Advanced Mobility Technology Laboratory Vehicle Systems Instrumentation and Evaluation Methodology

This report will provide a general overview of the testing facilities, research equipment, and general testing methodologies Argonne utilizes to conduct vehicle technology evaluations of advanced technology research vehicles. Data is captured from vehicle evaluations that provide powertrain operation and corresponding energy consumption based on a combination of in-depth instrumentation and focused testing. This resulting dataset of hundreds of time-resolved vehicle signals provide a basis for direct analysis and model validation of vehicle specific technologies. Argonne has attempted to standardize the approach to vehicle instrumentation and testing at Argonne, but it should be noted that each vehicle, and the corresponding assessment, remains unique. It is suggested that the reader reference vehicle specific testing reports for an overview of the unique aspects for each test vehicle. Additionally, the datasets for research vehicles are made publicly available through the Advanced Mobility Technology Laboratory’s Downloadable Driving Database (D3) at www.anl.gov/d3.

WhiteWind: White Etching Crack (WEC) Bearing Failures in Wind Turbine: Cooperative Research and Development, CRADA Number CRD-18-00758 (Final Report)

A WEC is a particularly aggressive, unpredictable and wide spread rolling element bearing failure mode that is common for large multi-megawatt (MW) wind turbines. WEC is considered the single most expensive failure mode for all wind turbine components, and there is currently no commercial solution. The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is leading the WhiteWind project to investigate WECs through funding provided by the Innovation Fund Denmark. Other project partners include Vestas, SKF, Expanite, Rheinisch-Westfalische Technische Hochschule Aachen University (RWTH Aachen), and Argonne National Laboratory. The objective of the overall project is to develop a new surface engineered WEC-resistant bearing material using novel surface engineering techniques that shall provide a commercially competitive alternative to existing wind turbine bearings. NREL will support the project by providing existing measured bearing loads and validating models of drivetrain loads.
