Design study of wind turbines 50 kW to 3000 kW for electric utility applications. Volume 2: Analysis and design

All possible overall system configurations, operating modes, and subsystem concepts for a wind turbine configuration for cost effective generation of electrical power were evaluated for both technical feasibility and compatibility with utility networks, as well as for economic attractiveness. A design optimization computer code was developed to determine the cost sensitivity of the various design features, and thus establish the configuration and design conditions that would minimize the generated energy costs. The preliminary designs of both a 500 kW unit and a 1500 kW unit operating in a 12 mph and 18 mph median wind speed respectively, were developed. The various design features and components evaluated are described, and the rationale employed to select the final design configuration is given. All pertinent technical performance data and component cost data is included. The costs of all major subassemblies are estimated and the resultant energy costs for both the 500 kW and 1500 kW units are calculated.

Study on utilization of advanced composites in commercial aircraft wing structures, volume 2

A plan is defined for a composite wing development effort which will assist commercial transport manufacturers in reaching a level of technology readiness where the utilization of composite wing structure is a cost competitive option for a new aircraft production plan. The recommended development effort consists of two programs: a joint government/industry material development program and a wing structure development program. Both programs are described in detail.

Utilization of NASA Lewis mobile terminals for the Hermes satellite

The paper describes the portable earth terminal (PET) and the transportable earth terminal (TET) which enable two-way television and voice communication. Both terminals were developed by NASA and utilize the high power of the Hermes satellite. PET is a bus-type vehicle which has receiving equipment for full duplex color television and which can transmit programs originating in either the on-board PET studio or in nearby buildings. PET has a collapsible 2.4-m diameter parabolic antenna interfacing with a 500-watt 14-GHz wideband TV transmitter and a 12-GHz wideband TV receiver system. TET uses two parabolic reflector antennas, 3 m and 1.2 m in diameter, mounted on a flat trailer towed by a truck. TET can receive and relay color TV signals, and its narrowband transmitter can serve as a return audio link permitting a question-and-answer format. Also described are uplink and downlink performance characteristics, operation procedures, and field demonstrations which enabled personnel at several hospitals to participate in a distant medical conference.

Long-duration high-efficiency operation of a continuously pulsed copper laser utilizing copper bromide as a lasant

A copper laser utilizing copper bromide as a lasant and neon as the buffer gas has been operated at an average laser power of between 16 and 19.5 W for a period of 68 h. Lasing was attained at a pulsing rate of 16.7 kHz in a quartz discharge tube 2.5-cm in diameter with an electrode separation of 200 cm. The laser energy/pulse and peak power/pulse corresponding to an average power of 19.5 W are 1.2 mJ and 30 kW, respectively. The ratio of laser power at 510.6 and 578.2 nm varied from 3.9 to 1.1 corresponding to a total average laser power of 4 and 18 W, respectively. The highest wall plug and capacitor efficiency measured during 68 h of operation were 0.7 and 1.1%, respectively.

Eulusmap: An international land resources map utilizing satellite imagery

In 1972, the International Geographical Union's Commission on World Land Use Survey adopted a project for a land-use map of Europe. Such a map, under the name Eulusmap was started earlier under sponsorship of several government offices in Hungary. Although there was great response from a number of contributors in many countries, it became evident by mid-1974 that the map would contain gaps and some inaccuracies unless additional data sources were utilized. By then, the satellite Landsat-1 had obtained imagery of most of Europe. Using theme extraction techniques, the map was completed in draft form and portions of it displayed at the 23d International Geographical Congress in Moscow during July 1976. Printing of the completed map was accomplished in May 1978.

Utilization of waste heat in trucks for increased fuel economy

The waste heat utilization concepts include preheating, regeneration, turbocharging, turbocompounding, and Rankine engine compounding. Predictions are based on fuel-air cycle analyses, computer simulation, and engine test data. All options are evaluated in terms of maximum theoretical improvements, but the Diesel and adiabatic Diesel are also compared on the basis of maximum expected improvement and expected improvement over a driving cycle. The study indicates that Diesels should be turbocharged and aftercooled to the maximum possible level. The results reveal that Diesel driving cycle performance can be increased by 20% through increased turbocharging, turbocompounding, and Rankine engine compounding. The Rankine engine compounding provides about three times as much improvement as turbocompounding but also costs about three times as much. Performance for either can be approximately doubled if applied to an adiabatic Diesel.

The Establishment of a Production-ready Manufacturing Process Utilizing Thin Silicon Substrates for Solar Cells

During the months of February and March, work towards the goals of the contract were started as scheduled. The first shipment of thin substrates were received and wafer processing was initiated. The objective of the contract is to investigate, develop and characterize the methods for establishing a production-ready manufacturing process which utilizes thin silicon substrates for solar cells. The thin substrates to be manufactured are three inches diameter, p-type Czochralski wafers of approximately 1 Omega cm resistivity. The wafers are prepared by sawing directly to thickness of 8 mils and 5 mils. To ensure removal of residual saw damage, most substrates are chemically etched to final thicknesses of 7 mils and 4 mils. The thin substrates are used to fabricate solar cells by standard processing techniques.

Economic comparison of fabric filters and electrostatic precipitators for particulate control on coal-fired utility boilers

The uncertainties and associated costs involved in selecting and designing a particulate control device to meet California's air emission regulations are considered. The basic operating principles of electrostatic precipitators and fabric filters are discussed, and design parameters are identified. The size and resulting cost of the control device as a function of design parameters is illustrated by a case study for an 800 MW coal-fired fired utility boiler burning a typical southwestern subbituminous coal. The cost of selecting an undersized particulate control device is compared with the cost of selecting an oversized device.
