Tuning austenite stability through prior microstructure control in a low-alloy Q&P steel
Quenching and partitioning (Q&P) processing is a widely accepted heat treatment methodology for creating high strength steels consisting of ferrite, martensite, and austenite, while maintaining relatively low manufacturing costs. Though the research on effects of prior microstructure is limited, an understanding of the heat treatment response of different starting microstructures is critical to processing and creating steels with complex microstructures that contain retained austenite and may afford opportunities to further optimize properties. This study investigates the influence of starting microstructure (ferrite/pearlite versus martensite) and prior levels of cold work (38 verses 58 %) on the microstructural development and mechanical properties of a 0.2 C-2.0 Mn-1.5 Si (wt.%) steel exposed to Q&P processing. Samples with a starting martensitic microstructure resulted in higher retained austenite fractions and a more homogeneous microstructure after Q&P processing compared to a starting microstructure of ferrite-pearlite. Starting martensitic microstructures also displayed higher work hardening rates and higher uniform elongations. Larger cold reductions saw accelerated dissolution kinetics and austenite formation during intercritical annealing, resulting in more similar final microstructures from the ferrite-pearlite and martensitic starting microstructures. Finally, the results presented here indicate that varying prior processing can be a route to manipulate and control austenite stability in a Q&P processed steel.

Electronic tuning of confined sub-nanometer cobalt oxide clusters boosting oxygen catalysis and rechargeable Zn–air batteries.
Reasonable design of robust bifunctional oxygen catalysts from an electronic structure perspective is intriguing and challenging for the development of high active rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs). In this study, the favorable regulation of the electronic structure of the cobalt oxide nanoclusters was firstly predicted by density functional theory (DFT) simulation, and then experimentally verified by confining sub-nanometer CoOx clusters (0.86 nm) into the small pore of ZIF-8 derived N-doped nanomaterials (PNC) using a microporous MOFs confinement strategy. The confined effect of the MOF micropores not only enhanced the stability of the subnanometer cobalt oxide clusters, but also make it coupled with Co-Nx to further regulate the electronic structure of the former, synergistic resulting in enhanced ORR/OER actives. As a result, the optimized 0.05CoOx@PNC catalyst demonstrates outstanding bifunctional oxygen performance with a smaller potential gap of 0.67 V. Moreover, the rechargeable Zn-air batteries integrated 0.05CoOx@PNC air cathode displays encouraging performance with a peak power density of 157.1 mW cm(-2), a specific capacity of 887 mAh g(Zn)(-1)at 10 mA cm(-2) and long-term cyclability for over 200 h, significantly outperforming the benchmark electrode couple consisted of Pt/C/RuO2. DFT calculation further revealed that reducing particle size and coupling with Co-N could effectively regulate the charge distribution of CoOx nanoclusters and downshift the D-band center of Co adsorption sites in CoOx nanoclusters, which reduced the reaction barrier of intermediate O-2* and OH* and ORR/ OER over potential, thus accelerating the overall ORR/OER kinetic process. This work offers a novel reference for the construction of a robust sub-nanometer cluster catalysts in the field of ZABs.
Tuning spin-orbit coupling towards enhancing photocurrent in hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites by using mixed organic cations
The presence of the heavy elements leads to strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs), which plays an important role in the photovoltaic performance of HOIPs by changing the populations between bright and dark states. The organic cation is a critical composition and affects SOC via the interaction with the inorganic cage. In this work, we use magneto-photocurrent measurement to explore the SOC effect upon using mixed organic cations (methylammonium (MA) and formamidinium (FA)) with different dipole moments in Pb based perovskites. Magneto-photocurrent measurements showed that the internal magnetic parameter B0 is decreased from 402.41 mT to 180.18 mT and 104.58 mT with decreasing the MA/FA ratio. This provides evidence that changing the internal dipole moment by using mixed organic cations can essentially change the SOC in HOIPs. Simultaneously, the photocurrent is increased from 21.46 mA/cm 2 to 22.60 mA/cm 2 and 23.08 mA/cm 2 when the MA/FA ratio is changed from 1:0 to 0.9:0.1 and 0.7:0.3. Above all, our results indicate that the change in SOC by different organic cations can also be a factor affecting the performance of perovskite solar cells.
Tuning the Mechanical Properties of Shape Memory Metallic Glass Composites with Brick and Mortar Designs
We use molecular dynamics simulations to characterize the tensile deformation and failure of shape memory alloy-bulk metallic glass composites (BMGCs). As the failure in BMGCs shifts from the MG matrix to the second phase different strategies are required to further improve their mechanical properties. Results show that a staggered brick BMGC displays enhanced ductility with mild strength loss following a homogeneously distributed plasticity. This demonstrates that judiciously designed BMGCs can effectively synergize the mechanical properties of metallic glasses and shape memory alloys by effectively distributing stress and preventing the generation of critical shear bands and premature failure while preserving strength.
Tuning the mechanical properties of nanoglass-metallic glass composites with brick and mortar designs
We use molecular dynamics simulations to characterize the tensile deformation and failure of metallic glass (MG)-nanoglass (NG) composites designed with a brick and mortar architecture consisting of a 3 nm-grain-size NG matrix and a MG second phase. Results show that the overall strength of the matrix is significantly improved by the second phase without sacrificing the large NG matrix ductility. The mechanical synergy of the two phases is optimized by arranging the MG bricks in a staggered way, which effectively delocalizes the plastic deformation, hindering the buildup of local stress hot spots and the generation of critical shear bands.
Tuning the Product Selectivity of Single-Atom Alloys by Active Site Modification
There is widespread interest in developing catalysts with uniform active sites that consist of single atoms, thereby simplifying the reaction mechanism and improving product selectivity. Here, we examine experimentally how CO can be used to modify the active sites on a strong binding single-atom alloy and examine how this in turn impacts product selectivity for a reaction that has two different pathways. Specifically, we find that CO can be used to selectively block isolated Rh atom active sites in a RhCu(111) model single-atom alloy catalyst surface and promote the dehydrogenation pathway for adsorbed ethyl groups by suppressing the hydrogenation pathway.
