Local Berry Phase Signatures of Bilayer Graphene in Intervalley Quantum Interference

Chiral quasiparticles in Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene have valley-contrasting Berry phases of ±2π. This nontrivial topological structure, associated with the pseudospin winding along a closed Fermi surface, is responsible for various novel electronic properties. In this work, we show that the quantum interference due to intervalley scattering induced by single-atom vacancies or impurities provides insights into the topological nature of the bilayer graphene. The scattered chiral quasiparticles between distinct valleys with opposite chirality undergo a rotation of pseudospin that results in the Friedel oscillation with wavefront dislocations. The number of dislocations reflects the information about pseudospin texture and hence can be used to measure the Berry phase. As demonstrated both experimentally and theoretically, the Friedel oscillation, depending on the single-atom vacancy or impurity at different sublattices, can exhibit N = 4, 2, or 0 additional wavefronts, characterizing the 2π Berry phase of the bilayer graphene. Our results provide a comprehensive study of the intervalley quantum interference in bilayer graphene and can be extended to multilayer graphene, shedding light on the pseudospin physics.

Magnetic Signatures of Radiation-Driven Double Ablation Fronts

In experiments performed with the OMEGA EP laser system, magnetic field generation in double ablation fronts was observed. Proton radiography measured the strength, spatial profile, and temporal dynamics of self-generated magnetic fields as the target material was varied between plastic (CH), aluminum, copper, and gold. Two distinct regions of magnetic field are generated in mid-Z targets -- one produced by gradients from electron thermal transport and the second from radiation-driven gradients. Extended magnetohydrodynamic simulations including radiation transport reproduced key aspects of the experiment, including field generation and double ablation front formation.

Observable signatures of initial state momentum anisotropies in nuclear collisions

In this work, we show that the correlation between the elliptic momentum anisotropy v 2 and the average transverse momentum [ p T ] at fixed multiplicity in small system nuclear collisions carries information on the origin of the observed momentum anisotropy. A calculation using a hybrid IP-Glasma+ music +UrQMD model that includes contributions from final state response to the initial geometry as well as initial state momentum anisotropies of the color glass condensate predicts a characteristic sign change of the correlator ρ ^ ( v 2 2 , [ p T ] ) as a function of charged particle multiplicity in p + Au and d + Au collisions at s = 200 GeV , and p + Pb collisions at s = 5.02 TeV . This sign change is absent in calculations without initial state momentum anisotropies. The model further predicts a qualitative difference between the centrality dependence of ρ ^ ( v 2 2 , [ p T ] ) in Au + Au collisions at s = 200 GeV and Pb + Pb collisions at s = 5.02 TeV , with only the latter showing a sign change in peripheral events. Predictions for O + O collisions at different collision energy show a similar behavior. Experimental observation of these distinct qualitative features of ρ ^ ( v 2 2 , [ p T ] ) in small and large systems would constitute strong evidence for the presence and importance of initial state momentum anisotropies predicted by the color glass condensate effective theory.

Many-Body Signatures of Collective Decay in Atomic Chains

Fully inverted atoms placed at exactly the same location synchronize as they deexcite, and light is emitted in a burst (known as “Dicke’s superradiance”). We investigate the role of finite interatomic separation on correlated decay in mesoscopic chains and provide an understanding in terms of collective jump operators. We show that the superradiant burst survives at small distances, despite Hamiltonian dipole-dipole interactions. However, for larger separations, competition between different jump operators leads to dephasing, suppressing superradiance. Collective effects are still significant for arrays with lattice constants of the order of a wavelength, and lead to a photon emission rate that decays nonexponentially in time. We calculate the two-photon correlation function and demonstrate that emission is correlated and directional, as well as sensitive to small changes in the interatomic distance. Furthermore, these features can be measured in current experimental setups, and are robust to realistic imperfections.

Signatures of Ultrafast Reversal of Excitonic Order in Ta2NiSe 5

In the presence of electron-phonon coupling, an excitonic insulator harbors two degenerate ground states described by an Ising-type order parameter. Starting from a microscopic Hamiltonian, we derive the equations of motion for the Ising order parameter in the phonon coupled excitonic insulator Ta 2 NiSe 5 and show that it can be controllably reversed on ultrashort timescales using appropriate laser pulse sequences. Using a combination of theory and time-resolved optical reflectivity measurements, we report evidence of such order parameter reversal in Ta 2 NiSe 5 based on the anomalous behavior of its coherently excited order-parameter-coupled phonons. Finally, our Letter expands the field of ultrafast order parameter control beyond spin and charge ordered materials.

Signatures of Weyl Fermion Annihilation in a Correlated Kagome Magnet

The manipulation of topological states in quantum matter is an essential pursuit of fundamental physics and next-generation quantum technology. Here we report the magnetic manipulation of Weyl fermions in the kagome spin-orbit semimetal Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 , observed by high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy. We demonstrate the exchange collapse of spin-orbit-gapped ferromagnetic Weyl loops into paramagnetic Dirac loops under suppression of the magnetic order. We further observe that topological Fermi arcs disappear in the paramagnetic phase, suggesting the annihilation of exchange-split Weyl points. In conclusion, our findings indicate that magnetic exchange collapse naturally drives Weyl fermion annihilation, opening new opportunities for engineering topology under correlated order parameters.

Proton Distribution Radii of 16–24 O: Signatures of New Shell Closures and Neutron Skin

The root mean square radii of the proton density distribution in 16–24 O derived from measurements of charge changing cross sections with a carbon target at ~900A MeV together with the matter radii portray thick neutron skin for 22–24 O despite 22,24 O being doubly magic. Imprints of the shell closures at N=14 and 16 are reflected in local minima of their proton radii that provide evidence for the tensor interaction causing them. The radii agree with ab initio calculations employing the chiral NNLO sat interaction, though skin thickness predictions are challenged. Furthermore, shell model predictions agree well with the data.

Signatures of Multiband Effects in High-Harmonic Generation in Monolayer MoS 2

High-harmonic generation (HHG) in solids has been touted as a way to probe ultrafast dynamics and crystal symmetries in condensed matter systems. Here, we investigate the polarization properties of high-order harmonics generated in monolayer MoS 2 , as a function of crystal orientation relative to the mid-infrared laser field polarization. At several different laser wavelengths we experimentally observe a prominent angular shift of the parallel-polarized odd harmonics for energies above approximately 3.5 eV, and our calculations indicate that this shift originates in subtle differences in the recombination dipole strengths involving multiple conduction bands. Further, this observation is material specific and is in addition to the angular dependence imposed by the dynamical symmetry properties of the crystal interacting with the laser field, and may pave the way for probing the vectorial character of multiband recombination dipoles.

Dynamical Scaling as a Signature of Multiple Phase Competition in Yb 2⁢ Ti 2 ⁢O 7

Yb 2 ⁢Ti 2 ⁢O 7 is a celebrated example of a pyrochlore magnet with highly frustrated, anisotropic exchange interactions. To date, attention has largely focused on its unusual, static properties, many of which can be understood as coming from the competition between different types of magnetic order. Here, in this work, we use inelastic neutron scattering with exceptionally high energy resolution to explore the dynamical properties of Yb 2 ⁢Ti 2 ⁢O 7 . We find that spin correlations exhibit dynamical scaling, analogous to behavior found near to a quantum critical point. We show that the observed scaling collapse can be explained within a phenomenological theory of multiple-phase competition, and confirm that a scaling collapse is also seen in semiclassical simulations of a microscopic model of Yb 2 ⁢Ti 2 ⁢O 7 . These results suggest that dynamical scaling may be general to systems with competing ground states.

Trace Anomaly as Signature of Conformality in Neutron Stars

We discuss an interpretation that a peak in the sound velocity in neutron star matter, as suggested by the observational data, signifies strongly coupled conformal matter. Here, the normalized trace anomaly is a dimensionless measure of conformality leading to the derivative and the nonderivative contributions to the sound velocity. We find that the peak in the sound velocity is attributed to the derivative contribution from the trace anomaly that steeply approaches the conformal limit. Smooth continuity to the behavior of high-density QCD implies that the matter part of the trace anomaly may be positive definite. We discuss a possible implication of the positivity condition of the trace anomaly on the M–R relation of the neutron stars.

Phonon modes and Raman signatures of MnBi 2n Te 3n+1 (n=1,2,3,4) magnetic topological heterostructures

An intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi 2 Te 4 arises when intercalating a Mn-Te bilayer chain in a topological insulator, Bi 2 Te 3 . We present observations on the inter- and intralayer phonon modes of the generalized MnBi 2n Te 3n+1 (n=1,2,3,4) family using cryogenic low-frequency Raman spectroscopy with various polarization configurations. Two peaks at 66 and 112 cm –1 show abnormal perturbation in Raman linewidths below magnetic transition temperature due to spin-phonon coupling. In MnBi 4 Te 7 , B i2 Te 3 layers induce Davydov splitting of the A1g mode around 137 cm –1 at 5 K. The out-of-plane interlayer force constant estimated using the linear chain model was (3.98±0.14)×10 19 N/m 3 , three times weaker than that of Bi 2 Te 3 . Adding more Bi 2 Te 3 layers, such as MnBi 6 Te 10 and MnBi 8 Te 13 , makes Bi 2 Te 3 properties more dominant than magnetic properties. Our work experimentally and theoretically discovers the dynamics of phonon modes of MnBi 2n Te 3n+ 1 family, facilitating utilization of magnetic topological heterostructures.
