Multiple plate hydrostatic viscous damper

A device for damping radial motion of a rotating shaft is described. The damper comprises a series of spaced plates extending in a radial direction. A hydraulic piston is utilized to place a load in these plates. Each annular plate is provided with a suitable hydrostatic bearing geometry on at least one of its faces. This structure provides a high degree of dampening in a rotor case system of turbomachinery in general. The damper is particularly useful in gas turbine engines.

On Certain Integrals which Pertain to the Forced Vibration of Plates

The various plate integrals previously considered by Crighton (1972) are directly recast in a manner that permits their systematic development near the source point; and thus to dispense with manipulation of the velocity transform. The advantage is the ease with which distributed forces over the plate are incorporated into the analysis. After the procedure is introduced in connection with a line source problem and followed by consideration of a point source, the analogous problems relative to uniformly distributed forces over strips or circular areas of the plate receive attention.

Ion plating for the future

The ion plating techniques are classified relative to the instrumental set up, evaporation media, and mode of transport. A distinction is drawn between the low vacuum (plasma) and high vacuum (ion beam) techniques. Ion plating technology is discussed at the fundamental and industrial level. At the fundamental level, the capabilities and limitations of the plasma (evaporant flux) and film characteristics are evaluated. And on the industrial level, the performance and potential uses of ion plated films are discussed.

An experimental investigation of silicon wafer surface roughness and its effect on the pull-strength of plated metals

Plated silicon wafers with surface roughness ranging from 0.4 to 130 microinches, subjected to tensile pull-strength tests, were analyzed. Results show that the measured pull-strength of plated metals decrease with increasing silicon surface roughness, effecting a weakening of the cohesive strength of the wafer, possibly caused by microcracks or 'etch pits' in the silicon surface. The mean value of pull-strength for all wafers plated with the Ni-Cu-Cu sequence exceeded the required 450 g/0.02 sq cm, and at Ra = 0.4 microinches, the mean pull-strength for the Ni-Cu-Cu and Ni-Cu wafers were 2290 and 850 g/0.02 sq cm, respectively. The development of standardized methods for measuring contact pull-strength is suggested. These results may have some bearing on solar cell arrays problems.

Laminated anisotropic reinforced plastic plates and shells

Basic technical theories and engineering calculation equations for anisotropic plates and shells made of rigid reinforced plastics, mainly laminated fiberglass, are presented and discussed. Solutions are given for many problems of design of structural plates and shells, including curved sections and tanks, as well as two chapters on selection of the optimum materials, are given. Accounting for interlayer shearing and transverse separation, which are new engineering properties, are discussed. Application of the results obtained to thin three ply plates and shells wth a light elastic filler is presented and discussed.

Comparisons of different plate treatments and designs: Analysis

The design and process changes on cell performance and life were studied. The merits of each design were analyzed physically, chemically, and electrochemically. A teardown analysis of each cell was carried out. On opening the cell it was found that the cell pack was moist with the electrolyte, the extent varying from one cell to another. The cell components, the positives, the negatives, and the separators, could be separated easily for cell pack of an uncycled cell. The separators from the uncycled cell were clean and white. In the case of cycled cells the separators were stuck to the surface of the negative plates. During the removal of these separators from the negative plates invariably a thin layer of the separator material was strongly adhering to the surface of the negative plates and could not be removed as easily as in the case of the uncycled cells. The separators had dark patches due to cadmium migration.

Three-dimensional elasticity solution of an infinite plate with a circular hole

The elasticity problem for a thick plate with a circular hole is formulated in a systematic fashion by using the z-component of the Galerkin vector and that of Muki's harmonic vector function. The problem was originally solved by Alblas. The reasons for reconsidering it are to develop a technique which may be used in solving the elasticity problem for a multilayered plate and to verify and extend the results given by Alblas. The problem is reduced to an infinite system of algebraic equations which is solved by the method of reduction. Various stress components are tabulated as functions of a/h, z/h, r/a, and nu, a and 2h being the radius of the hole and the plate thickness and nu, the Poisson's ratio. The significant effect of the Poisson's ratio on the behavior and the magnitude of the stresses is discussed.

Measurements of displacement around holes in composite plates subjected to quasi-static compression

Attempts to develop a whole-field, high sensitivity optical technque for measurement of load induced changes of thickness of composite plates are described. Graphite-epoxy plates of quasi-isotropic layup were used as test specimens. Changes of thickness of three plates, each with a central hole of different size, were measured as a function of applied compressive loads. The first test specimen showed localized zones where no holographic fringes were present, surrounded by zones of low fringe contrast. This was thought to be a result of localized motion or creep. Subsequent tests with an increased time interval between specimen loading and holographic exposure demonstrated no localized zones of absent fringes. No plausible explanation for radical differences in the quality of fringe patterns was found, although the use of specimens having a high quality mirrorized surface provided superior change of thickness patterns. Recommendations for further investigations and changes in test procedure are presented.

A proposal to conduct a Caribbean plate project involving the application of space technology to the study of Caribbean geology

The Caribbean plate project is designed to improve current understanding of geological resources and geological hazards within the Caribbean region. Models of mineral occurrence and genesis (including energy resources) on a regional scale, which contribute to nonrenewable resource investigations. Models of lithospheric stress and strain on a regional scale, which contribute to forecasting geological hazards such as earthquakes and major volcanic eruptions are developed. Geological information is synthesize, and research tools provided by space technology the study of the Earth's crust are used. The project was organized in a thematic fashion, to focus on specific geological aspects of the Caribbean plate which are considered to be key factors in developing the types of models described. The project adopts a synoptic perspective in seeking to characterize the three dimensional structure, composition, state of stress, and evolution of the entire Caribbean plate. Geological information derived from analysis of space acquired data is combined with information provided by conventional methods to obtain insight into the structure, composition, and evolution of the Earth's crust. In addition, very long baseline interferometry and laser ranging techniques, which are also based upon the use of space technology, obtain information concerning crustal motion that, in turn, provides insight into the distribution and localization of crustal stress.

Postbuckling of orthotropic composite plates loaded in compression

The nonlinear large deflection equations of von Karman are written for 'specially' orthotropic plates. The equations are then manipulated to determine the parameters required to establish postbuckling behavior. It is found that only two new parameters are needed beyond those required for buckling. By assuming trigonometric functions in one direction, the plate equations are converted into ordinary nonlinear differential equations which are solved numerically using a two point boundary problem solver that makes use of Newton's method. The postbuckling behavior is obtained for simply supported and clamped, long, rectangular, orthotropic plates covering the complete range of dimensions and material properties.

A note on the cracked plates reinforced by a line stiffener

The problem of a cracked plate reinforced by a line stiffener is reconsidered. The original solution of this problem was given in the literature. Also, a variation of the problem with debonding between the plate and the stiffener near the cracked region was reported in the literature. However, the special case of the problem in which the crack tip terminates at the stiffener does not appear to have been studied. In practice, the solution may be necessary in order to assess the crack arrest effectiveness of the stiffener. The problem of a stiffened plate with a crack is reformulated, the asymptotic stress state near the crack tip terminating at the stiffener is examined, and numerical results are given for various stiffness constants.

Unsteady laminar boundary-layer calculations on oscillating configurations including backflow. Part 1: Flat plate, oscillating in its own plane

A finite difference method has been developed to calculate the unsteady boundary layer over an oscillating flat plate. Low- and high frequency approximations were used for comparison with numerical results. Special emphasis was placed on the behavior of the flow and on the numerical calculation procedure as soon as reversed flow has occurred over part of the oscillation cycle. The numerical method displayed neither problems nor singular behavior at the beginning of or within the reversed flow region. Calculations, however, came to a limit where the back-flow region reached the plate's leading edge in the case of high oscillation amplitudes. It is assumed that this limit is caused by the special behavior of the flow at the plate's leading edge where the boundary layer equations are not valid.

Ion-plating of solar cell arrays encapsulation task: LSA project 32

An ion plating process by which solar cells can be metallized and AR coated, yielding efficiencies equal to or better than state-of-the-art cells, was developed. It was demonstrated that ion plated AR films may be used as an effective encapsulant, offering primary protection for the metallization. It was also shown that ion plated metallization and AR coatings can be consistent with the project cost goals.

Failure mechanics in low-velocity impacts on thin composite plates

Eight-ply quasi-isotropic composite plates of Thornel 300 graphite in Narmco 5208 epoxy resin (T300/5208) were tested to establish the degree of equivalence between low-velocity impact and static testing. Both the deformation and failure mechanics under impact were representable by static indentation tests. Under low-velocity impacts such as tool drops, the dominant deformation mode of the plates was the first, or static, mode. Higher modes are excited on contact, but they decay significantly by the time the first-mode load reaches a maximum. The delamination patterns were observed by X-ray analysis. The areas of maximum delamination patterns were observed by X-ray analysis. The areas of maximum delamination coincided with the areas of highest peel stresses. The extent of delamination was similar for static and impact tests. Fiber failure damage was established by tensile tests on small fiber bundles obtained by deplying test specimens. The onset of fiber damage was in internal plies near the lower surface of the plates. The distribution and amount of fiber damage was similar fo impact and static tests.

Geologic observations of the northern boundary of the Caribbean plate across central America as seen by Seasat and SIR-A

The radar data analyzed here extend from the Amatique Bay (Golfo de Honduras) in the northeast to the Pacific Ocean (Puenta Remedios) in the southwest. Space Shuttle Imaging Radar (SIR-A) data-take 18 overlaps the principal part of the Seasat mosaic. SIR-A data make possible more observations over the Central American Cordillera, where strong layover limited the amount of information obtained by Seasat. The radar coverage delineates the principal strike-slip faults of the region (Cuilco-Chixoy-Polochic, Motagua and Jocotan), which have acted as the Caribbean-Americas plate boundary. It also demarcates volcanic terranes related to subduction of the Cocos Plate under the Caribbean Plate. Within pumice fields of the Tertiary volcanic belt, the use of two Seasat look directions (rev 759 and rev 1211), in conjunction with SIR-A data, makes possible some rock discrimination.

Generic buckling curves for specially orthotropic rectangular plates

Using a double affine transformation, the classical buckling equation for specially orthotropic plates and the corresponding virtual work theorem are presented in a particularly simple fashion. These dual representations are characterized by a single material constant, called the generalized rigidity ratio, whose range is predicted to be the closed interval from 0 to 1 (if this prediction is correct then the numerical results using a ratio greater than 1 in the specially orthotropic plate literature are incorrect); when natural boundary conditions are considered a generalized Poisson's ratio is introduced. Thus the buckling results are valid for any specially orthotropic material; hence the curves presented in the text are generic rather than specific. The solution trends are twofold; the buckling coefficients decrease with decreasing generalized rigidity ratio and, when applicable, they decrease with increasing generalized Poisson's ratio. Since the isotropic plate is one limiting case of the above analysis, it is also true that isotropic buckling coefficients decrease with increasing Poission's ratio.

Heat transfer and flow characteristics of jets impinging on a concave hemispherical plate

The present study is concerned with an experimental investigation of the flow characteristics and heat transfer from turbulent air jets impinging normally on a concave hemispherical plate (CHP). It is found that the incompressible, turbulent jets impinging on a CHP are in many respects similar to the jets impinging on a flat plate. The observed differences are due to effects of curvature and to a slightly higher turbulence level inside of the CHP. Attention is given to the experimental apparatus, aspects of inner boundary layer development, the maximum velocity decay in a wall jet, the derivation of a maximum velocity decay formula, the influence of curvature on stagnation point heat transfer, and heat transfer calculations for a concave hemispherical plate.
