The aim of this study is to develop model of a small High Temperature Gas cooled Reactor (HTGR) including the balance of plant. This microreactor produces electricity using the thermal power of the nuclear reaction. This work utilizes the MOOSE Multiphysics simulation tools, which are mainly developed at Idaho National Laboratory (INL, Idaho, United States of America). Its thermal-hydraulics and Heat conduction Modules are used to study the fluids behavior in the primary loop and power conversion system and their interactions with the heating structures. More specifically, one verifies that the temperatures, pressures and mass flow rates of the fluids in both loops are consistent and that, at the same time, all the power transfers occur as expected. Moreover, the various mechanical components characteristics (turbine, compressor, pump) are adapted to the reactor operating conditions. This first analysis is conducted using simplified and one-dimensional model for the core. Ultimately, the obtained results are used to build a higher fidelity core model. This step aims to verify that the initial simplified simulation is consistent with the three-dimensional core modeling. In addition, the calculated material temperatures are checked. This study provides a fairly complete model of the thermal hydraulic phenomena for a particular design of High Temperature Gas cooled Reactor.

Bottom-up urban energy models are crucial for understanding current energy use patterns and informing design strategies. However, accurately characterizing these models to represent different communities remains a challenge due to the extensive data needed for simulating existing energy use behavior. This data includes information related to human activities and building characteristics, all of which correlate with socioeconomic factors. To overcome this challenge, we developed an automated framework that utilizes both top-down and bottom-up data, to predict unknown building and occupant characteristics that are needed for more accurate and equitable modeling and analytics. Our framework, integrated into the URBANopt district energy modeling platform, uses statistical data models from ResStock. URBANopt models co-located buildings and neighborhoods. At this scale there are data gaps in building characteristic data, such as materials, insulation, occupancy, income, and energy usage of the buildings. To address this data gap, we use ResStock data, representative at the census tract scale, and develop machine-learning and deeplearning techniques to disaggregate it to individual buildings. By mapping unique occupant, building and economic properties to URBANopt energy models, we gain detailed insights into the variability of building energy use across different neighborhoods. This insight helps deploy technologies for co-located buildings and supports targeted upgrades for communities with unique economic and demographic characteristics, ensuring energy equity. Accurate characterization of energy models allows us to develop equitable strategies tailored to diverse neighborhoods, whether underserved or affluent. Our automated framework streamlines energy modeling and provides a reliable tool for building energy characterization.

The Multiphysics Object Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE) advances predictive modeling in nuclear research by simplifying the application design process and making modeling more efficient and accessible to researchers and the broader community. Because of MOOSE’s critical role in the scientific computation field, verification and validation are important to evaluate the reliability and credibility of MOOSE’s code, simulations, and models. To assess MOOSE’s Navier Stokes module and turbulence models, the following verification and validation University of Manchester ERCOFTAC cases were simulated in MOOSE, and the results were compared: Case 032 Turbulent Flow in a 2D Channel Case 079 Natural Convection in an Enclosed Cavity
