Exploring the onset of collectivity approaching 𝑁=40 with masses of manganese isotopes

Isotopes in the region of the nuclear chart below 68 Ni have been the subject of intense experimental and theoretical effort due to the potential onset of a new “island of inversion” when crossing the harmonic oscillator subshell closure at 𝑁=40. Here, we have measured the masses of 64−68 Mn using TITAN's multiple-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer, resulting in the first precision mass measurements of 67 Mn and 68 Mn. These results are compared to ab initio calculations and modern shell model calculations and show an increase in collectivity approaching 𝑁=40.

New level scheme and lifetime measurement of the 13/2 + state in 209 Po

The level structure of 209 Po has been studied by in-beam 𝛾-ray spectroscopy with the 209 Bi ⁢( 6 Li ,𝛼⁢2⁢𝑛) 209 Po reaction at beam energies of 28, 30, 34 MeV. The level scheme of 209 Po is expanded by the 𝛾−𝛾 coincidence measurement, where 27 new transitions and 23 new levels are observed. The lifetimes of 13/2 − , 17/2 − , and 23/2 + states are obtained and are consistent with the previous work, while the one of the 13/2 + state is measured for the first time. A configuration-interaction-shell-model calculation is performed, and its results are compared with the experimental results for 209 Po , with an emphasis on the coupling between the single valence neutron hole and the even-even core of 210 Po . A systematic comparison of the 13/2 + state in N = 125 chain is also studied in the current work.

Retrieval of full angular- and energy-dependent complex transition dipoles in the molecular frame from laser-induced high-order harmonic signals with aligned molecules

High-order harmonic signals generated in molecules are the consequence of coherent summation of complex laser-induced transition dipoles $\textit{d}(θ, ω)$ with each fixed-in-space molecule; here $\theta$ is the angle of the molecular axis with respect to the laser polarization axis and $\omega$ is the harmonic energy. In the so-called rotational coherent spectroscopy, it is proposed to extract the fixed-in-space $\textit{d}(θ, ω)$ in the molecular frame by measuring harmonics generated by a probing laser from the rotational molecular wave packets that have been prepared by a prior pump laser. By varying the time delay between the two lasers, methods have been utilized to extract the $\theta$ dependence of both the amplitude and phase of each individual harmonic, but the relative phase between harmonics cannot be retrieved. Here we report that this limitation can be removed. It requires the additional measurement of harmonic spectra versus the pump-probe angles at one fixed time delay. The two-dimensional input harmonic data (time-delay and pump-probe angle) are then used to retrieve the full complex transition dipole $\textit{d}(θ, ω)$ using a retrieval method based on machine learning algorithms. Finally, we demonstrate this method on N 2 and CO 2 molecules.

Anomalous ellipticity dependence of the generation of near-threshold harmonics in noble gases

We measured the ellipticity dependence of the harmonic yield of He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe. It is found that the harmonic yield in general decreases monotonically with increasing laser ellipticity but anomalous dependence does occur for each atom for some harmonic orders. Additionally, we found that the degree of anomaly is weakest in helium but is stronger for the heavier atoms. The anomaly also depends on laser intensity. To explain these features, we developed a quantum trajectory Monte Carlo (QTMC) model based on the quantum path integral theory to study high-order harmonic generation (HHG). The model includes the effect of Coulomb potential from the target ion, thus it is capable of calculating near-threshold harmonics quantitatively. This model reveals that the presence of Coulomb potential would generate orbiting trajectories which are responsible for the anomalous ellipticity dependence near the threshold.

Superconductivity in single crystals of ZrP 1.27 Se 0.73

Results are reported for single crystals of the PbFCl-type layered compound ZrP 1.27 Se 0.73 that were produced using the iodine vapor transport method. Electrical transport, magnetization, and heat capacity measurements reveal disordered metallic behavior and the occurrence of bulk superconductivity, with a transition temperature (T c ) of 7.1 K and an anisotropic orbitally limited upper critical field. 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance measurements provide additional microscopic information, where the line shape, Knight shift, and spin-lattice relaxation data are consistent with the superconductivity originating from the corrugated Zr-P(2c)/Se plane. This suggests that the superconductivity first forms in the corrugated plane and the bulk superconductivity eventually occurs via coupling between the square planar layers. These data also show that either there are multiple superconducting gaps or there is a single gap that does not fully open across the entire Fermi surface. Finally, these results clarify the superconducting state in this material and will enable further measurements that require single-crystal specimens.

Tunable artificial topological Hall effects in van der Waals heterointerfaces

The topological Hall effect (THE) originating from a real-space Berry phase is a significant transport signal for chiral spin textures and has been extensively investigated recently due to its potential applications in topological spintronics. Recently, chiral spin textures and THE were realized in heterointerfaces where spatial inversion symmetry is naturally broken. However, multichannel transport in heterointerfaces can mask the intrinsic THE associated with chiral spin textures. We systematically investigate multichannel transport in two different kinds of van der Waals (vdW) heterointerfaces. In ferromagnetic-ferromagnetic (FM-FM) heterointerfaces with two opposite anomalous Hall effects, multichannel transport has mimicked both positive and negative THE without involving any topological charges, which is dubbed as an artificial THE. Moreover, artificial THEs were also observed in FM-metal heterointerfaces consisting of a single FM layer stacked onto a nodal-line semimetal; this was attributed to the presence of multichannel transport as well. Our findings provide an alternative explanation for THE-like features in heterointerfaces. They also reveal exotic multichannel transport properties in vdW heterointerfaces which could facilitate the development of multifunctional nanodevices based on vdW heterointerfaces.

Mass measurements of neutron-rich gallium isotopes refine production of nuclei of the first r -process abundance peak in neutron-star merger calculations

We report mass measurements of neutron-rich Ga isotopes 80–85 Ga with TRIUMF's Ion Trap for Atomic and Nuclear science. The measurements determine the masses of 80–83 Ga in good agreement with previous measurements. Here, the masses of 84 Ga and 85 Ga were measured for the first time. Uncertainties between 25 and 48 keV were reached. The new mass values reduce the nuclear uncertainties associated with the production of A ≈ 84 isotopes by the r-process for astrophysical conditions that might be consistent with a binary neutron star (BNS) merger producing a blue kilonova. Our nucleosynthesis simulations confirm that BNS merger may contribute to the first abundance peak under moderate neutron-rich conditions with electron fractions Y e = 0.35–0.38.

Measurement of the scintillation and ionization response of liquid xenon at MeV energies in the EXO-200 experiment

In this work, liquid xenon (LXe) is employed in a number of current and future detectors for rare event searches. We use the EXO-200 experimental data to measure the absolute scintillation and ionization yields generated by γ interactions from 228 Th (2615 keV), 226 Ra (1764 keV), and 60 Co (1332 keV and 1173 keV) calibration sources, over a range of electric fields. The W value that defines the recombination-independent energy scale is measured to be 11.5±0.5 (syst.) ±0.1 (stat.) eV. These data are also used to measure the recombination fluctuations in the number of electrons and photons produced by the calibration sources at the MeV scale, which deviate from extrapolations of lower-energy data. Additionally, a semiempirical model for the energy resolution of the detector is developed, which is used to constrain the recombination efficiency, i.e., the fraction of recombined electrons that result in the emission of a detectable photon. Detailed measurements of the absolute charge and light yields for MeV-scale electron recoils are important for predicting the performance of future neutrinoless double β -decay detectors.

Mass measurements of neutron-rich indium isotopes for r -process studies

A new series of neutron-rich indium mass measurements is reported from the TITAN multiple-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MR-TOF-MS). These mass measurements cover 125-134 In (N = 76–85) and include ground states as well as isomeric states. The masses of nuclei in this region are known to be of great importance for accurately modeling r-process nucleosynthesis, and the significance of the reported neutron-rich indium masses is discussed in this context. Results are compared with earlier experimental data where available as well as theoretical mass models. The measurements reported here include the first mass measurements of 133,134 In, as well as the first direct mass measurement of 132 In. The masses of 125-131 In ground states and several isomers were previously measured to higher precision by Penning trap mass spectrometry, which also resolved some low-lying isomers that could not be resolved in this work. The earlier Penning trap measurements serve as excellent cross-checks for the MR-TOF-MS measurements, and in some cases the MR-TOF-MS measurements improve the literature uncertainties of higher-lying isomer masses and excitation energies. Finally, a new isomeric state for 128 In, recently reported for the first time by the JYFLTRAP group, is also confirmed by the TITAN MR-TOF-MS, with a measured excitation energy of 1813(17) keV.

Mass measurements of 60–63 Ga reduce x-ray burst model uncertainties and extend the evaluated T=1 isobaric multiplet mass equation

We report precision mass measurements of neutron-deficient gallium isotopes approaching the proton drip line. The measurements of 60–63 Ga performed with the TITAN multiple-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer provide a more than threefold improvement over the current literature mass uncertainty of 61 Ga and mark the first direct mass measurement of 60 Ga. The improved precision of the 61 Ga mass has important implications for the astrophysical rp process, as it constrains essential reaction Q values near the 60 Zn waiting point. Based on calculations with a one-zone model, we demonstrate the impact of the improved mass data on prediction uncertainties of x-ray burst models. The first-time measurement of the 60 Ga ground-state mass establishes the proton-bound nature of this nuclide, thus constraining the location of the proton drip line along this isotopic chain. Including the measured mass of 60 Ga further enables us to extend the evaluated T = 1 isobaric multiplet mass equation up to A = 60.

Investigating nuclear structure near N=32 and N=34: Precision mass measurements of neutron-rich Ca, Ti, and V isotopes

Nuclear mass measurements of isotopes are key to improving our understanding of nuclear structure across the chart of nuclides, in particular, for the determination of the appearance or disappearance of nuclear shell closures. Here, we present high-precision mass measurements of neutron-rich Ca, Ti, and V isotopes performed at TRIUMF's Ion Trap for Atomic and Nuclear science (TITAN) and the Low Energy Beam and Ion Trap (LEBIT) facilities. These measurements were made using the TITAN multiple-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MR-ToF-MS) and the LEBIT 9.4T Penning trap mass spectrometer. In total, 13 masses were measured, 8 of which represent increases in precision over previous measurements. These measurements refine trends in the mass surface around N=32 and N=34, and support the disappearance of the N=32 shell closure with increasing proton number. Additionally, our data do not support the presence of a shell closure at N=34.

Pion and kaon parton distribution functions from basis light front quantization and QCD evolution

We investigate the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the pion and the kaon by combining quantum chromodynamics (QCD) evolution with the basis light front quantization. The initial PDFs result from the light front wave functions obtained by diagonalizing the effective Hamiltonian consisting of the holographic QCD confinement potential, a complementary longitudinal confinement potential, and the color-singlet Nambu–Jona-Lasinio interactions. The valence-quark PDF of the pion, after QCD evolution, is consistent with the result from the E-0615 experiment at Fermilab. Meanwhile, the pion structure function calculated from the PDFs agrees with the ZEUS and the H1 experiments at DESY-HERA for large x. Additionally, the ratio of the up quark PDF of the kaon to that of the pion is in agreement with the NA-003 experiment at CERN. Finally, we also present the cross section for the pion-nucleus induced Drell-Yan process with the obtained pion PDFs supplemented by the PDFs of the target nuclei.

Parton distribution functions of heavy mesons on the light front

The parton distribution functions (PDFs) of heavy mesons are evaluated from their light-front wave functions, which are obtained from a basis light-front quantization in the leading Fock sector representation. We consider the mass eigenstates from an effective Hamiltonian consisting of the confining potential adopted from light-front holography in the transverse direction, a longitudinal confinement, and a one-gluon exchange interaction with running coupling. In this work we present the gluon and the sea quark PDFs which we generate dynamically from the QCD evolution of the valence quark distributions.
