Alvin Tollestrup (1924-2020): A Life in Science

Alvin Tollestrup was a physicist and engineer of uncommon insight, intuition, and ingenuity who was revered in life for his essential leadership in the development of superconducting magnets for high-energy accelerators. He exhibited a matchless mastery of what he called freshman physics — though his mastery hardly ended there — and an uncanny gift for joining careful measurements with transparent calculations to reveal the essence of a subject. To watch Alvin at work was to learn how a true scientist formulates and solves a problem. He had other gifts: a nose for significant problems in both science and technology, the ability to draw talented people to an important cause, and a mentor's instinct for spotting gifted junior colleagues and helping them to mature as engineers and scientists. He was also good company! Alvin brought his keen vision about what constitutes important science, along with powerful ambition for the institution and for fundamental science, to considerat ions about Fermilab's future. His questions were uniformly probing, his opinions unfailingly interesting, and his appetite for work consistently inspiring. Among Alvin's many contributions to experimental particle physics — in a career that spanned seven decades — the rich achievements of the Collider Detector at Fermilab Collaboration, of which he was a founder and an enduring leader, stand out. The discovery of the top quark in 1995 earned worldwide acclaim. He reaped individual accolades as well, including election to the National Academy of Sciences. The National Medal of Technology, conferred in 1989, recognized Alvin’s leading role in developing superconducting magnets for Fermilab's Tevatron. Universities Research Association created the Tollestrup Award for Postdoctoral Research, commemorating Alvin's avuncular support for young scientists. This volume celebrates Alvin Tollestrup’s career and the rich, fulfilling life he led beyond the laboratory. Contributions from colleagues and family illuminate many facets of this remarka! ble figure. May old friends savor the memory of the Alvin they knew, while discovering less-familiar parts of his history; and may readers who did not have the opportunity to know Alvin firsthand find inspiration in his exemplary life in science.

Archival, anonymization and presentation of HTCondor logs with GlideinMonitor

GlideinWMS is a pilot framework to provide uniform and reliable HTCondor clusters using heterogeneous and unreliable resources. The Glideins are pilot jobs that are sent to the selected nodes, test them, set them up as desired by the user jobs, and ultimately start an HTCondor schedd to join an elastic pool. These Glideins collect information that is very useful to evaluate the health and efficiency of the worker nodes and invaluable to troubleshoot when something goes wrong. This data, including local stats, the results of all the tests, and the HTCondor log files, is packed and sent to the GlideinWMS Factory. To access this information, developers and troubleshooters must exchange emails with Factory operators and dig manually into files. Furthermore, these files contain also information like email and IP addresses, and user IDs, that we want to protect and limit access to. GlideinMonitor is a Web application to make these logs more accessible and useful: it organizes the logs in an efficient compressed archive; it allows to search, unpack, and inspect them, all in a convenient and secure Web interface; via plugins like the log anonymizer, it can redact protected information preserving the parts useful for troubleshooting.

Three Sheet Al alloy assembly for automotive application

An update on joint characterization of three sheet friction stir lap welds (FSLW) in three aluminum alloys (7xxx, 5xxx, and 6xxx) for automotive assembly application is presented. Welding speed of 0.3-2.9m/min was used with pin length >5mm with the aim to reduce upturn hooking on the retreating side and avoid wormhole defect on the advancing side. Joints were also made in to enable T peel and U peel testing. Stitch welds were used to understand effects of weld length and ramp length on T peel performance. Hat sections were joined for 3-point bending and axial crush testing and tested with promising results. Several key issues that require further investigations are identified including flash management near the trim edge, weld quality with limited clamping, tool failures at speeds greater than 0.5m/min, and propensity of incipient melting for 7xxx stack-up.

Process Robustness of Friction Stir Dovetailing of AA7099 to Steel with In Situ AA6061 Interlayer Linking

Rolled homogeneous armor (RHA) steel was joined to aluminum alloy AA7099-T7451 with an interlayer of AA6061-T651 by single-pass friction stir dovetailing (FSD). The evolution of the AA7099/AA6061 and AA6061/steel interfacial microstructures and mechanical properties of the joints were examined. The AA6061 interlayer prevented Zn migration from the AA7099 to the steel during FSD and inhibited formation of brittle, Zn-rich, Fe-Al intermetallic compounds within the joint. The flow of the dissimilar aluminum alloys at the interface was controlled with a partially threaded friction stir welding pin and a dovetail geometric configuration optimized in previous work. The process robustness was explored to establish parameter windows by elucidating parametric effects on the relationship between process conditions and the joint’s microstructure and mechanical properties. Ranges of process forge force (50–70 kN) and interface temperature (475°C–515°C) consistently yielded joints with adequate performance. The load-carrying capacity in lap shear tensile tests was 2025 ? 100 N/mm.

Method of fabricating photosensitive devices with reduced process-temperature budget

A method is provided for fabricating a backside-illuminated photodetector in which a device wafer is joined to a readout wafer in an IC hybridization step. Before the IC hybridization step, the device layer is defined in the device wafer, and an LPCVD layer is formed over the device layer. The LPCVD layer may be a passivation layer, an antireflection coating, or both. The side of the device wafer having the LPCVD layer is bonded to a handle wafer, the IC is hybridized by mating the device wafer to the readout wafer, and the handle wafer is then removed, exposing the LPCVD layer. Because the LPCVD layer is formed before the active devices are fabricated, it can be made by high-temperature techniques for deposition and processing. Accordingly, a layer of high quality can be fabricated without any hazard to the active devices.

Quarterly Management Document – FY21, 4th Quarter, Multi-pass Hybrid Laser Arc Welding of Alloy 740H

This report summarizes the progress made on reducing the joining time for thick plates of Alloy 740H. Modeling of deep penetration laser welding of Alloy 740H continues with the goal of explaining cracking in the weld that is observed in experimental laser welds in this alloy. Experimental work was also performed to understand factors influencing hybrid laser arc weld quality as a function of the arc and laser parameters. Laser welds and hybrid laser arc welds have been made using best practices up this point in the project. Welded materials have been sent to a commercial vendor to make creep specimens and perform short term creep tests to help evaluate the quality of the welds that have been made so far.

Additive Manufacturing Case Study

Geothermal technologies include an extremely wide range of products required for well construction, completion, production, intervention and surface energy conversion activities. Many of these products are geometrically complex, require multi-step and highly specialized fabrication processes, and are expensive due to the low production numbers typically associated with the geothermal market. These challenges along with the high temperature demands of the geothermal environment have also hindered the adoption of many tools routinely used in the oil & gas industry.Recent advancements in Additive Manufacturing (AM) materials of construction, build volumes and part quality have transitioned the technology from primarily cosmetic prototyping applications to the point where AM can be used to make production parts, even for the most demanding applications. These improved AM capabilities along with the inherent ability of AM to produce complex parts and, in some cases, geometries that cannot be manufactured using conventional casting, machining and joining fabrication approaches motivate an exploration of its potential to positively impact geothermal well construction and operations technologies.Sandia National Labs collaborated with Oak Ridge National Laboratory on a case study examining additive manufacturing opportunities for Geothermal applications. The study focused on designing components with improved performance characteristics that cannot be fabricated conventionally. A rotor for a downhole motor was chosen based on the potential for improving its rotational dynamics. Topology optimization was used as a design method to reduce the rotational inertia of the part while preserving sufficient rotational stiffness to transmit the torque required for the drilling application. The optimization resulted in a nearly 50% reduction in polar moment of inertia while maintaining other desired performance characteristics. The design developed using the topology optimization approach was fabricated using additive manufacturing and cannot be fabricated conventionally. This paper will discuss the design approach, performance improvements and manufacturing methods used to produce the part.

The Future of Arms Control in a Multilateral and Multi-Domain Environment

The crisis of arms control is obvious and broadly discussed among states, within the world’s expert community and to a lesser extent the media. This crisis has at least three building blocks: Russia continues to violate or undermine key arms control treaties and commitments; China rejects to join the existing arms control architecture; and both countries heavily invest in the modernization of their armed forces, including development of the nuclear arsenals. In the current highly competitive environment, arms control is more difficult to achieve and is likely to accomplish less than what was optimistically anticipated a generation ago. The growing pressure to “save arms control at all cost”, often expressed by the Western expert community, further complicates the situation. The excessively aspirational and ideological approach to arms control – in which arms control, disarmament, and non-proliferation (ADN) become a silver bullet solution – is as dangerous as security and defence policies which entirely exclude ADN. As James Cameron rightly points out, “history should teach policy-makers to look beyond formulae for strategic stability to other ways in which arms control can help to contain disruptive challenges to the balance of power and minimize the chances of war”.
