Spacelab 2 Upper Atmospheric Modification experiment over Arecibo. I - Neutral gas dynamics

The Orbital Maneuvering Subsystem engines of the Space Shuttle were used to inject H2, CO2, H2O and other combustion products into the upper atmosphere over the Arecibo Observatory. Images of the airglow enhancements that resulted from chemical reactions between the exhaust gases and the F-layer plasma showed that the exhaust vapor trail came to rest 80 km downstream from the center of the burn. A computer simulation of the gas dynamics shows that the region of the burn was dominated by a 'snow plow' effect sweeping out a corridor in the atmosphere and collisionally heating the injected vapors.

Flash melting of chondrule precursors in excess of 1600 C. Series 1: Type 2 (B1) chondrule composition experiments

Several questions in chondrule production remain an enigma despite years of experiments. What were the melting temperatures experienced by chondrules? What were the physical characteristics of chondrule precursors? How and why did volatile elements (i.e. Na) found within chondrules survive the formation process? We present the initial results of a series of experiments designed to investigate the above questions by using flash melting to duplicate the melting stage of chondrule formation.

High Reynolds Number Hybrid Laminar Flow Control (HLFC) Flight Experiment: Aerodynamic Design - Report 2

This document describes the aerodynamic design of an experimental hybrid laminar flow control (HLFC) wing panel intended for use on a Boeing 757 airplane to provide a facility for flight research on high Reynolds number HLFC and to demonstrate practical HLFC operation on a full-scale commercial transport airplane. The design consists of revised wing leading edge contour designed to produce a pressure distribution favorable to laminar flow, definition of suction flow requirements to laminarize the boundary layer, provisions at the inboard end of the test panel to prevent attachment-line boundary layer transition, and a Krueger leading edge flap that serves both as a high lift device and as a shield to prevent insect accretion on the leading edge when the airplane is taking off or landing.

Gravity model improvement using the DORIS tracking system on the SPOT 2 satellite

A high-precision radiometric satellite tracking system, Doppler Orbitography and Radio-positioning Integrated by Satellite system (DORIS), has recently been developed by the French space agency, Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES). DORIS was designed to provide tracking support for missions such as the joint United States/French TOPEX/Poseidon. As part of the flight testing process, a DORIS package was flown on the French SPOT 2 satellite. A substantial quantity of geodetic quality tracking data was obtained on SPOT 2 from an extensive international DORIS tracking network. These data were analyzed to assess their accuracy and to evaluate the gravitational modeling enhancements provided by these data in combination with the Goddard Earth Model-T3 (GEM-T3) gravitational model. These observations have noise levels of 0.4 to 0.5 mm/s, with few residual systematic effects. Although the SPOT 2 satellite experiences high atmospheric drag forces, the precision and global coverage of the DORIS tracking data have enabled more extensive orbit parameterization to mitigate these effects. As a result, the SPOT 2 orbital errors have been reduced to an estimated radial accuracy in the 10-20 cm RMS range. The addition of these data, which encompass many regions heretofore lacking in precision satellite tracking, has significantly improved GEM-T3 and allowed greatly improved orbit accuracies for Sun-synchronous satellites like SPOT 2 (such as ERS 1 and EOS). Comparison of the ensuing gravity model with other contemporary fields (GRIM-4C2, TEG2B, and OSU91A) provides a means to assess the current state of knowledge of the Earth's gravity field. Thus, the DORIS experiment on SPOT 2 has provided a strong basis for evaluating this new orbit tracking technology and has demonstrated the important contribution of the DORIS network to the success of the TOPEX/Poseidon mission.

Magnetoelastic interactions in SrCu 2 (BO 3 ) 2 studied by Raman scattering experiments and first principles calculations

Dynamic and static crystal lattice properties of SrCu 2 (BO 3 ) 2 are studied by means of Raman scattering, magnetostriction, and thermal expansion measurements in magnetic fields to 45 T. Raman experiments versus temperature reveal that some phonon modes show an unusual behavior: their frequencies soften (modes at 200 and 450 cm –1 ) while others harden (modes at 385 and 478 cm –1 ) when decreasing the temperature below 15 K. Magneto-Raman experiments show that their field dependence correlates with their respective temperature dependencies; e.g., modes that are hardened with increasing temperature also harden with applied magnetic fields and modes that become softer with temperature also soften with applied fields. We use density functional theory to successfully model and compute the energies of these modes, classifying them into two types: pantograph (modes that soften when decreasing the temperature) and nonpantograph. We conclude that the former involves the modification of the intradimer exchange interaction J and the latter the interdimer J'. Lastly, dilatometry is used to correlate field-dependent Raman modes to the closing of the spin gap as well as fractional-magnetization stripe states M = 1/4 M s and M = 1/3 M s , where M s is the saturation magnetization.

Diffusion energy barrier of Au on Bi 2 Se 3 : theory and experiment

The stability and diffusion of ultra-thin thermally deposited Au films on Bi 2 Se 3 was studied using scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory calculations. The Au/Bi 2 Se 3 interface is of interest as gold is predicted to provide excellent electrical contact while maintaining the spin-polarized characteristics of the electronic states in Bi 2 Se 3 that make the material attractive for spintronic applications. When deposited at room temperature, Au 10 covers the surface with tightly packed islands of nanometer scale dimension. The surface morphology is stable up to 400K. At this annealing temperature, Au atoms have sufficient energy to diffuse across the surface and aggregate into larger nanostructures. At 550K, the Bi 2 Se 3 surface is only sparsely covered, and the Au has formed clusters with length scales 5-10 times larger than the original islands formed at room temperature. Comparison of the experiment and first principle calculation lead to the conclusion that the diffusion energy barrier for Au on Bi 2 Se 3 is as high as 0.47 eV, 15 which is much larger than diffusion barriers on other van der Waals materials.

Integral Experiment Request 554: CED-2 Summary Report

This report summarizes the critical experiment design 2 (CED-2) or final design study for Integral Experiment Request 554 (IER-554). This experiment describes the effects and importance of adding a commercially available neutron absorber material to a known light-water low-enriched uranium assembly. The assembly in question is the Seven Percent Critical Experiments (7uPCX) at Sandia National Laboratories. The neutron absorber plates considered for the experiment are known as Boralcan and are made of boron carbide (B 4 C) particles embedded in 1100 aluminum alloy. The concentrations of B 4 C and 1100 aluminum were changed as well as the thickness and the positions of the plates, and the fuel rod configuration was adapted to ensure that the assembly would be critical in each case studied. A total of 6 critical configurations, each with a neutron absorber plate inserted, are described in this report. No results of high-quality integral experiments involving neutron absorbers made with B 4 C and 1100 aluminum plates are currently publicly available. Sensitivity to the neutron absorber plate material definition, isotopes, and cross sections of specific regions and configurations are also analyzed. As part of the final design of the experiment, a safe plate holder made of 3003 aluminum was designed. The study results indicate that these experiments are achievable with sufficiently low uncertainties and minimal modification to the assembly, and the CED-3 phase can start when funding allows.
