Time delay occultation data of the Helios spacecraft for probing the electron density distribution in the solar corona

S-band time delay measurements were collected from the spacecraft Helios A and B during three solar occultations in 1975/76 within heliocentric distances of about 3 and 215 earth radius in terms of range, Doppler frequency shift, and electron content. Characteristic features of measurement and data processing are described. Typical data sets are discussed to probe the electron density distribution near the sun (west and east limb as well) including the outer and extended corona. Steady-state and dynamical aspects of the solar corona are presented and compared with earth-bound-K-coronagraph measurements. Using a weighted least squares estimation, parameters of an average coronal electron density profile are derived in a preliminary analysis to yield electron densities at r = 3, 65, 215 earth radius. Transient phenomena are discussed and a velocity of propagation v is nearly equal to 900 km/s is determined for plasma ejecta from a solar flare observed during an extraordinary set of Helios B electron content measurements.

Time delay occultation data of the Helios spacecrafts and preliminary analysis for probing the solar corona

S-band time delay measurements were collected from the spacecrafts Helios A and B during three solar occultations in 1975/76 within heliocentric distances of about 3 and 215 solar radii in terms of range, Doppler frequency shift, and electron content. A description is given concerning some characteristic features of the methods of measurement and data processing. Typical data sets are discussed to probe the electron density distribution near the sun (west and east limb as well) including the outer and extended corona. Steady-state and dynamical aspects of the solar corona are presented and compared with earth-bound K-coronagraph measurements. Using a weighted least squares estimation 3 parameters of an average coronal electron density profile are derived in a preliminary analysis to yield electron densities of about 130 billion; 100 million; 7 million/cu m at r?3; 65; 215 solar radii. Transient phenomena are discussed and a velocity of propagation v approximately 900 km/s for plasma ejecta from a solar flare is determined from an extraordinary set of Helios B electron content measurements on April 30/May 1, 1976.

Time-delay-and-integration charge-coupled devices using tin oxide gate technology

Doped tin oxide gates are used in a time-delay-and-integration (TDI) CCD scheme in an effort to develop a stable transparent gate technology. Design characteristics of the system are discussed, including 2 sections of 10 by 9 integration stages, four-phase buried channel construction, and 10 input parallel-in/serial-out output shift register at a video rate of 1.25 MHz. A quantum efficiency of 65% with smooth spectral response is attained by front surface imaging. The suitability of the system for the Landsat program is discussed in terms of TDI-CCD operating parameters.

Deflection of polarised radiation - Relative phase delay technique

The article discusses the geodesic motion of photons, considering particularly whether oppositely polarized photons fall at the same rate. It is assumed that orthogonally polarized photons would be equally deflected by the gravitational field of a nonrotating mass. Upon the introduction of rotation, the angular momentum of the deflecting source couples to the photon spin through gravitational field action. Thus there arise separate trajectories for orthogonal polarizations. Searching for changes in polarization in a deflected beam is accomplished by a relative phase delay technique. If the beam is split into orthogonal linear polarization, final polarization is elliptical. Experiments have been performed on searching for ellipticity developments in the linearly polarized carrier waves from Helios 1 and 2, and the results are presented.

Determination of the time delay in the case of two-path propagation on the basis of the attenuation characteristics for two adjacent frequencies

Pronounced fading occurring in the line of sight radio links at frequencies below 10 GHz can be traced to the effects of multipath propagation. Modulation disturbances depend on travel time differences between the direct wave and the wave which is reflected at atmospheric layers. A method described for the determination of the time delay is based on an indirect approach which utilizes the difference in fading at various frequencies. The method was employed in measurements involving a distance of 181 km. The results obtained in the measurement are discussed.

DSN water vapor radiometer: Tropospheric range delay calibration

A discussion is presented of the Deep Space Network water vapor radiometer by means of simultaneous antenna temperature and radiosonde measurements at Edwards Air Force Base. The calibration of radiometer gain and hot load radiometric noise temperature is also described. Calibration equations are given. It is found that with a selected data set, the RMS error is less than 1 cm over a total delay range of 9 to 38 cm. Limitations on the use of the water vapor radiometer are also given.

Algorithms for the determination of the time delays of the signal when using unequal detectors

In treating the recorded results from detectors at different locations in space, the analysis of the time delays of signals is crucial to locating the sources of detected radiation. Because the correlation method requires the manipulation of awkward matrices to evaluate its accuracy, a solution is outlined based on minimizing the sum of the squares of signal deviations, and the algorithms for evaluating the resulting error are presented.

Time-delay-and-integration charge coupled devices /CCDs/ applied to the Thematic Mapper

The visible focal plane of the Thematic Mapper, the next generation sensor system for application to earth resource survey, uses complex hybrid assembly techniques to interface silicon photodiodes to JFET preamplifiers. This complexity can be ameliorated by the use of a 20-channel time-delay-and-integration (TDI) CCD with nine stages of integration per channel. By going to a CCD array operating in a TDI mode, over 700 individual op amps can be replaced with only 48 op amps. Smooth spectral response and 70% quantum efficiency have been provided by using doped tin oxide gates over the imaging region.

Phase and group delay calibration of a very long baseline interferometer by East Coast VLBI Group

Precisely timed pulses injected into the input of each receiver are used to calibrate the phase and group delay through each interferometer terminal. The short duration pulses are generated at a 1 MHz rate directly from the output of the frequency standard. The pulses are injected into the receiver at a level low enough to produce less than one percent increase in system temperature, yet can be extracted during processing with a high enough signal to noise ratio to determine the phase of the calibration rails within 1 degree in 1 second of integration. The calibration system also includes precise cable measurement electronics and a pulse echo for clock synchronization.

Microwave radiometry as a tool to calibrate tropospheric water-vapor delay

Microwave radiometers were used to measure the emission line due to the water vapor molecules of atmospheric emission. Four separate field tests were completed which compared radiometers to other techniques which measure water vapor. It is shown that water vapor induced delay can be estimated with an accuracy of plus or minus 2 cm for elevation angles above 17 degrees.

Gigahertz analog modulation and differential delay of GaAlAs lasers - Temperature and current behavior

Gigahertz analog modulation characteristics of broad-area commercially available GaAlAs lasers have been investigated as a function of temperature and current in the vicinity of the upper frequency limit, where the resonance phenomena occur. The optimum temperature for small-signal amplitude modulation was found to be around -15 C for our particular broad-stripe geometry double-heterostructure laser. The Q was found to increase by a factor of 2 and the bandwidth by about 2%; the external quantum efficiency was maximized in this range. The optimum dc current bias was about 2% above the threshold current. Differential delays have also been measured down to a few picosecond accuracy by a unique phase-angle measurement method using a vector voltmeter. Some of the temperature effects observed may be related to mode changes and multimode and superradiance behavior.

Time delay and integration detectors using charge transfer devices

An imaging system comprises a multi-channel matrix array of CCD devices wherein a number of sensor cells (pixels) in each channel are subdivided and operated in discrete intercoupled groups of subarrays with a readout CCD shift register terminating each end of the channels. Clock voltages, applied to the subarrays, selectively cause charge signal flow in each subarray in either direction independent of the other subarrays. By selective application of four phase clock voltages, either one, two or all three of the sections subarray sections cause charge signal flow in one direction, while the remainder cause charge signal flow in the opposite direction. This creates a form of selective electronic exposure control which provides an effective variable time delay and integration of three, six or nine sensor cells or integration stages. The device is constructed on a semiconductor sustrate with a buried channel and is adapted for front surface imaging through transparent doped tin oxide gates.

Estimation of the propagation delay through the troposphere from microwave radiometer data

Microwave propagation delay through the troposphere is studied as a means of estimating the adverse effect of atmospheric water vapor on the accuracy of measurements made with very long baseline interferometry. Vertical profiles of temperature and water vapor density were obtained from a total of 240 radiosonde launches taken simultaneously at three New England locations in 1974; all studies were made at the 19 and 22.2 GHz frequency operating range of the radiometers. The wet path length in the zenith direction could be estimated from the surface water vapor density to an accuracy of 5 cm for the summer data and 2 cm for winter data, and with the brightness temperatures, it could be estimated to an accuracy of 0.3 cm. Two dual-frequency radiometers were also used to determine the accuracy of prediction of the path length from real radiometry data. The rms error for the estimation of wet path length from surface meteorological parameters was 3.2 cm, and for the radiometer brightness temperatures the rms error was 1.5 cm.

Polyploidization delay in rat hepatocytes under liver growth inhibition by hypokinesia

A study of young rats, weighing 55 to 59 g, after being for 10 days in conditions of limited mobility, shows a retardation of body growth as well as that of liver growth. The decrease in the rate of growth is accompanied by a reduction of cell proliferation and by delay polyploidization of hepatocytes in the liver of experimental rats. The materials, methods, and results of research are discussed.
