Enabling high energy lithium metal batteries via single-crystal Ni-rich cathode material co-doping strategy

High-capacity Ni-rich layered oxides are promising cathode materials for secondary lithium-based battery systems. However, their structural instability detrimentally affects the battery performance during cell cycling. Here, we report an Al/Zr co-doped single-crystalline LiNi<:sub>0.88 Co 0.09 Mn 0.03 O 2 (SNCM) cathode material to circumvent the instability issue. We found that soluble Al ions are adequately incorporated in the SNCM lattice while the less soluble Zr ions are prone to aggregate in the outer SNCM surface layer. The synergistic effect of Al/Zr co-doping in SNCM lattice improve the Li-ion mobility, relief the internal strain, and suppress the Li/Ni cation mixing upon cycling at high cut-off voltage. These features improve the cathode rate capability and structural stabilization during prolonged cell cycling. In particular, the Zr-rich surface enables the formation of stable cathode-electrolyte interphase, which prevent SNCM from unwanted reactions with the non-aqueous fluorinated liquid electrolyte solution and avoid Ni dissolution. To prove the practical application of the Al/Zr co-doped SNCM, we assembled a 10.8 Ah pouch cell (using a 100 μm thick Li metal anode) capable of delivering initial specific energy of 504.5 Wh kg- 1 at 0.1 °C and 25 °C.

Spin transport of a doped Mott insulator in moiré heterostructures

Moiré superlattices of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenide heterobilayers are model systems for investigating strongly correlated electronic phenomena. Specifically, WSe 2 /WS 2 moiré superlattices have emerged as a quantum simulator for the two-dimensional extended Hubbard model. Experimental studies of charge transport have revealed correlated Mott insulator and generalized Wigner crystal states, but spin transport of the moiré heterostructure has not yet been sufficiently explored. Here, we use spatially and temporally resolved circular dichroism spectroscopy to directly image the spin transport as a function of carrier doping and temperature in WSe 2 /WS 2 moiré heterostructures. We observe diffusive spin transport at all hole concentrations at 11 Kelvin — including the Mott insulator at one hole per moiré unit cell — where charge transport is strongly suppressed. At elevated temperatures the spin diffusion constant remains unchanged in the Mott insulator state, but it increases significantly at finite doping away from the Mott state. The doping- and temperature-dependent spin transport can be qualitatively understood using a t–J model, where spins can move via the hopping of spin-carrying charges and via the exchange interaction.

Conduction band convergence and local structure distortion for superior thermoelectric performance of GaSb-doped n-type PbSe thermoelectrics

Achieving high-stability thermoelectric materials with excellent average power factor and figure of merit is crucial for maximizing the output power density and conversion efficiency of thermoelectric devices. In this study, GaSb is added to PbSe as an n-type dopant to form stable solid solutions. Doping with GaSb flattens the conduction band and reduces the energy difference between the Σ and L conduction bands, thereby significantly improving the Seebeck coefficient. Herein, the Ga and Sb atoms co-occupy the vacant Pb sites, unlike in the case of traditional single-element doping, as is verified by density functional theory calculations. The resultant structural distortion is confirmed via transmission electron microscopy. This local structure distortion caused by GaSb doping reduces the lattice thermal conductivity. Consequently, the Pb 0.99875 (GaSb) 0.00125 Se sample exhibits a record-high average power factor of ~22.37 μW cm −1 K −2 and a high average figure of merit of ~0.94 in the temperature range of 300‒873 K. Furthermore, the introduction of interstitial Cu and discordant Zn atoms further reduces the lattice thermal conductivity. The Pb 0.99875 (GaSb) 0.00125 Zn 0.01 Se 1.01 -0.3%Cu sample exhibits a low lattice thermal conductivity of ~0.4 W m −1 K −1 at 873 K and a record-high average figure of merit of ~1.01 in the temperature range of 300‒873 K.

Doping with phosphorus reduces anion vacancy disorder in CdSeTe semiconductors enabling higher solar cell efficiency

Doping is used in many pn junction devices, such as polycrystalline solar cells, to increase the strength of the junction field to assist charge carrier collection and thus partially mitigate nonradiative recombination losses. We demonstrate a different doping characteristic for inorganic solar cells: using dopants to reduce charge carrier trapping and electronic band tails. Alloying CdTe with Se to form CdSeTe semiconductor reduced recombination, but CdSeTe has more complex defect states which can limit further efficiency gains due to charge carrier trapping and trap-limited mobility. Doping CdSeTe with P (but not N, As, or Sb in this study) reduces band tails (Urbach energies) and lessens the impact of the near valence band trap states, with ambipolar mobilities improving to >50 cm 2 V −1 s −1 , fill factor increasing from 76% to 79%, and efficiencies increasing by 0.9% absolute. Simulations are used to show how such defect reduction improves performance in the radiative limit.

Emergence of superconductivity in doped multiorbital Hubbard chains

Abstract We introduce a variational state for one-dimensional two-orbital Hubbard models that intuitively explains the recent computational discovery of pairing in these systems when hole doped. Our ansatz is an optimized linear superposition of Affleck–Kennedy–Lieb–Tasaki valence-bond states, rendering the combination a valence-bond liquid dubbed orbital resonant valence bond. We show that the undoped (one-electron/orbital) quantum state of two sites coupled into a global spin singlet is exactly written employing only spin-1/2 singlets linking orbitals at nearest-neighbor sites. Generalizing to longer chains defines our variational state visualized geometrically expressing our chain as a two-leg ladder, with one orbital per leg. As in Anderson’s resonating valence-bond state, our undoped variational state contains preformed singlet pairs that via doping become mobile, leading to superconductivity. Doped real materials with one-dimensional substructures, two near-degenerate orbitals, and intermediate Hubbard U / W strengths— W the carrier’s bandwidth—could realize spin-singlet pairing if on-site anisotropies are small. If these anisotropies are robust, spin-triplet pairing emerges.

Precursor of pair-density wave in doping Kitaev spin liquid on the honeycomb lattice

Abstract We study the effects of doping the Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice where the spins interact via the bond-directional interaction J K , which is known to have a quantum spin liquid as its exact ground state. The effect of hole doping is studied within the t - J K model on a three-leg cylinder using density-matrix renormalization group. Upon light doping, we find that the ground state of the system has a dominant quasi-long-range charge-density-wave correlations but short-range single-particle correlations. In the pairing channel, the even-parity superconducting correlation is dominant with d -wave-like symmetry, which oscillates in sign as a function of separation with a period equal to that of the spin-density wave and two times the charge-density wave. Although these correlations fall rapidly (possibly exponentially) at long distances, this is never-the-less the example where a pair-density wave is the leading instability in the pairing channel on the honeycomb lattice.

Emergent ferromagnetism and insulator-metal transition in δ-doped ultrathin ruthenates

Abstract Heterostructures of complex transition metal oxides are known to induce extraordinary emergent quantum states that arise from broken symmetry and other discontinuities at interfaces. Here we report the emergence of unusual, thickness-dependent properties in ultrathin CaRuO 3 films by insertion of a single isovalent SrO layer (referred to as δ-doping). While bulk CaRuO 3 is metallic and nonmagnetic, films thinner than or equal to ~15-unit cells (u.c.) are insulating though still nonmagnetic. However, δ-doping to middle of such CaRuO 3 films induces an insulator-to-metal transition and unusual ferromagnetism with strong magnetoresistive behavior. Atomically resolved imaging and density-functional-theory calculations reveal that the whole δ-doped film preserves the bulk-CaRuO 3 orthorhombic structure, while appreciable structural and electronic changes are highly localized near the SrO layer. The results highlight delicate nature of magnetic instability in CaRuO 3 and subtle effects that can alter it, especially the role of A-site cation in electronic and magnetic structure additional to lattice distortion in ruthenates. It also provides a practical approach to engineer material systems via highly localized modifications in their structure and composition that may offer new routes to the design of oxide electronics.

Origin of the enhanced Nb3Sn performance by combined Hf and Ta doping

Abstract In recent years there has been an increasing effort in improving the performance of Nb 3 Sn for high-field applications, in particular for the fabrication of conductors suitable for the realization of the Future Circular Collider (FCC) at CERN. This challenging task has led to the investigation of new routes to advance the high-field pinning properties, the irreversibility and the upper critical fields ( H Irr and H c2 , respectively). The effect of hafnium addition to the standard Nb-4Ta alloy has been recently demonstrated to be particularly promising and, in this paper, we investigate the origins of the observed improvements of the superconducting properties. Electron microscopy, Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure Spectroscopy (EXAFS) and Atom Probe Tomography (APT) characterization clearly show that, in presence of oxygen, both fine Nb 3 Sn grains and HfO 2 nanoparticles form. Although EXAFS is unable to detect significant amounts of Hf in the A15 structure, APT does indeed reveal some residual intragrain metallic Hf. To investigate the layer properties in more detail, we created a microbridge from a thin lamella extracted by Focused Ion Beam (FIB) and measured the transport properties of Ta-Hf-doped Nb 3 Sn. H c2 (0) is enhanced to 30.8 T by the introduction of Hf, ~ 1 T higher than those of only Ta-doped Nb 3 Sn, and, even more importantly the position of the pinning force maximum exceeds 6 T, against the typical ~ 4.5–4.7 T of the only Ta-doped material. These results show that the improvements generated by Hf addition can significantly enhance the high-field performance, bringing Nb 3 Sn closer to the requirements necessary for FCC realization.

Role of Sr doping and external strain on relieving bottleneck of oxygen diffusion in La 2- x Sr x CuO 4-δ

In many complex oxides, the oxygen vacancy formation is a promising route to modify the material properties such as a superconductivity and an oxygen diffusivity. Cation substitutions and external strain have been utilized to control the concentration and diffusion of oxygen vacancies, but the mechanisms behind the controls are not fully understood. Using first-principles calculations, we find how Sr doping and external strain greatly enhances the diffusivity of oxygen vacancies in La 2-x Sr x CuO 4-δ (LSCO) in the atomic level. In hole-doped case (2x > δ), the formation energy of an apical vacancy in the LaO layer is larger than its equatorial counterpart by 0.2 eV that the bottleneck of diffusion process is for oxygen vacancies to escape equatorial sites. Such an energy difference can be reduced and even reversed by either small strain (< 1.5%) or short-range attraction between Sr and oxygen vacancy, and in turn, the oxygen diffusivity is greatly enhanced. For fully compensated hole case (2x ≦ δ), the formation energy of an apical vacancy becomes too high that most oxygen vacancies cannot move but would be trapped at equatorial sites. From our electronic structure analysis, we found that the contrasting change in the formation energy by Sr doping and external strain is originated from the different localization natures of electron carrier from both types of oxygen vacancies.

Exploring nonequilibrium phases of photo-doped Mott insulators with generalized Gibbs ensembles

Many experiments show that strong excitations of correlated quantum materials can cause non-thermal phases without equilibrium analogues. Understanding the origin and properties of these nonequilibrium states has been challenging due to the limitations of theoretical methods for nonequilibrium strongly correlated systems. In this work, we introduce a generalized Gibbs ensemble description that enables a systematic analysis of the long-time behavior of photo-doped states in Mott insulators based on equilibrium methods. We demonstrate the power of the method by mapping out the nonequilibrium phase diagram of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model, which features η -pairing and charge density wave phases in a wide photo-doping range. We furthermore clarify that the peculiar kinematics of photo-doped carriers, and the interaction between them, play an essential role in the formation of these non-thermal phases. Our results establish a new path for the systematic analysis of nonequilibrium strongly correlated systems.

Dopant site-dependent luminescence from rare-earth doped dibarium octafluorohafnate Ba 2 HfF 8 nanocubes for radiation detection

Development of new host materials containing heavy elements for radiation detection is highly desirable. In this work, dibarium octafluorohafnate, Ba 2 HfF 8 , doped with rare-earth ions, was synthesized as cube-shaped nanocrystals via a facile hydrothermal method. The host lattice contains two Ba 2+ crystallographic sites, and dopants on these sites exhibit site-dependent photoluminescence (PL), cathodoluminescence (CL) and X-ray excited radioluminescence (RL) characteristics. Single doping contents were optimized as 25 mol% Tb 3+ and 5 mol% Eu 3+ . In Ba 2 HfF 8 :Tb 3+ –Eu 3+ codoped nanocrystals, preferrable occupation of Eu 3+ and Tb 3+ at two different Ba 2+ sites in the host lattice was observed. The nanocubes exhibited enhanced emissions over micron sized particles. In PL, the presence of Tb3+ ions significantly enhanced the emission intensity of Eu 3+ ions due to energy transfer from the Tb 3+ to Eu 3+ ions, while under high-energy irradiation in CL or RL, Tb 3+ emission was intensified. X-ray induced RL with afterglow in seconds was observed. Finally, it was found that the codoped sample showed higher sensitivity than the singly doped sample, indicating that codoping is an effective strategy to develop a scintillator with this host structure for high-energy radiation detection.

Platinum-complexed phosphorous-doped carbon nitride for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Sustainable hydrogen gas production is critical for future fuel infrastructure. Here, a series of phosphorous-doped carbon nitride materials were synthesized by thermal annealing of urea and ammonium hexafluorophosphate, and platinum was atomically dispersed within the structural scaffold by thermal refluxing with Zeise's salt forming Pt–N/P/Cl coordination interactions, as manifested in X-ray photoelectron and absorption spectroscopic measurements. The resulting materials were found to exhibit markedly enhanced electrocatalytic activity towards the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic media, as compared to the P-free counterpart. This was accounted for by P doping that led to a significantly improved charge carrier density within C 3 N 4 , and the sample with the optimal P content showed an overpotential of only –22 mV to reach the current density of 10 mA cm –2 , lower than that of commercial Pt/C (–26 mV), and a mass activity (7.1 mA μg –1 Pt at –70 mV vs. reversible hydrogen electrode) nearly triple that of the latter. Finally, results from the present study highlight the significance of P doping in the manipulation of the electronic structures of metal/carbon nitride nanocomposites for high-performance HER electrocatalysis.

Approaching theoretical specific capacity of iron-rich lithium iron silicate using graphene-incorporation and fluorine-doping

Lithium iron silicate, Li 2 FeSiO 4 , is a promising cathode material for lithium ion batteries due to its high theoretical specific capacity, earth abundance, low cost, and environmental friendliness. The challenges of Li 2 FeSiO 4 as a practical cathode material are (1) the low electronic and ionic conductivity and (2) the low discharge voltage. The approach of incorporating graphene sheets into the nanostructure of Li 2 FeSiO 4 is used for dealing with the low conductivities while fluorine doping is intended to increase the discharge voltage. The fluorine-doped and graphene-incorporated iron-rich lithium iron silicate F-LFSO/G nanomaterials were successfully synthesized using a facile/efficient hydrothermal method with excellent performance, 328.43 mA h g -1 at 0.1C rate, approaching their theoretical specific capacity, 99% of 331 mA h g -1 . This clearly reveals that the reversible (de)lithiation of 2 Li + ions per F-LFSO has been realized as a result of these approaches. The (de)lithiation process has been studied using in operando high energy synchrotron X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy aided by theoretical modeling, which reveals that F doping deeply changes the O electron configuration in F-LFSO, and consequently makes the Li + ion transfer easier, while the reversible redox of oxygen can be utilized to achieve high specific capacity.

A two-electron transfer mechanism of the Zn-doped δ-MnO 2 cathode toward aqueous Zn-ion batteries with ultrahigh capacity

Neutral aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have attracted considerable attention due to their safe and green features. As one typical cathode, birnessite MnO 2 (δ-MnO 2 ) suffers from low conductivity and structural instability, and its energy storage mechanism is still not well established yet. Herein, we developed a Zn-doped δ-MnO 2 material via a facile and effective microwave-assisted method for the cathode in aqueous ZIBs. By incorporating Zn to modify the microstructure and promote reaction kinetics, the Zn-doped δ-MnO 2 electrode demonstrates significantly enhanced electrochemical performance with an ultrahigh reversible capacity of 455 mA h g –1 and excellent specific energy of 628 W h kg –1 . In addition, the successive insertion of H + and Zn 2+ and deep two-electron transfer routes are revealed systematically by ex situ experiments. In this study, the two-electron transfer route (Mn 4+ /Mn 3+ and Mn 3+ /Mn 2+ ) mechanism of Zn-doped δ-MnO 2 electrodes explains the exceedingly high capacity and opens new opportunities to develop high-energy aqueous ZIBs.

Unusual aliovalent doping effects on oxygen non-stoichiometry in medium-entropy compositionally complex perovskite oxides

Aliovalent doping of perovskite oxides can tune the oxygen vacancy formation energy. This work discovers normal vs. abnormal aliovalent doping effects on redox behaviors in medium-entropy compositionally complex perovskite oxides (CCPOs) (La 1–x Sr x )(Mn 1/3 Fe 1/3 Ti 1/3 )O 3–δ (LS_MFT) vs. (La 1–x Sr x )(Mn 1/3 Fe 1/3 Cr 1/3 )O 3–δ (LS_MFC). In the LS_MFC series, the oxygen non-stoichiometry range Δδ (= δ red – δ ox ) linearly depends on the Sr molar ratio x, while the LS_MFT series shows a V-shape dependence of Δδ on x. This unusual observation is investigated and explained based on the analysis of the energy loss near edge structure (ELNES) in STEM electron energy loss spectroscopy, along with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In LS_MFC, Cr–L 2,3 , Mn–L 2,3 and Fe–L 2,3 peaks have a similar linear shift to higher energy with increasing x, which indicates higher oxidation states of Cr, Mn, and Fe with lower oxygen vacancy formation energies. In LS_MFT, the V-shape of the Δδ vs. x curve is caused by the stable Ti 4+ state and a V-shape Mn/Fe valency dependence on x. Furthermore, this study suggests the possible existence of different (including unexpected) coupled aliovalent doping effects in CCPOs with multiple B-site redox active elements.

Real time quantification of mixed ion and electron transfer associated with the doping of poly(3-hexylthiophene)

Conjugated polymers have promising applications in electronics and energy storage due to the polymer's tunable conductivity and redox activity. For example, the conductivity of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) is heavily dependent upon the doping level and the dopant type. This feature becomes especially important when considering P3HT or similar conjugated polymers for devices that require switching between electronic states (conductive vs. insulating). In this study, the mechanism of mixed ion-electron transfer studied using electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (EQCM-D) is discussed. During cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge–discharge experiments, the mass change of a P3HT film is monitored in real time. Distinct mass transfer regions are quantified as a function of doping level and potential, which are then correlated to changes with in situ conductance and spectroelectrochemical response. To identify the time scale at which the doping reaction transitions from kinetic to diffusion control, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is coupled with EQCM-D. Finally, this work gives valuable insight into the nature of mixed ion–electron transfer, including its time scale, as it relates to the electronic properties of P3HT.

Critical analysis of self-doping and water-soluble n-type organic semiconductors: structures and mechanisms

Self-doping organic semiconductors provide a promising route to avoid instabilities and morphological issues associated with molecular n-type dopants. Structural characterization of a naphthalenetetracarboxylic diimide (NDI) semiconductor covalently bound to an ammonium hydroxide group is presented. The dopant precursor was found to be the product of an unexpected base catalyzed hydrolysis, which was reversible. The reversible hydrolysis had profound consequences on the chemical composition, morphology, and electronic performance of the doped films. In addition, we investigated the degradation mechanism of the quaternary ammonium group and the subsequent doping of NDI. These findings reveal that the products of more than one chemical reaction during processing of films must be considered when utilizing this promising class of water-soluble semiconductors.

N-Doped carbon nanoparticles on highly porous carbon nanofiber electrodes for sodium ion batteries

Nitrogen doped carbon nanoparticles on highly porous carbon nanofiber electrodes were successfully synthesized via combining centrifugal spinning, chemical polymerization of pyrrole and a two-step heat treatment. Nanoparticle-on-nanofiber morphology with highly porous carbon nanotube like channels were observed from SEM and TEM images. Nitrogen doped carbon nanoparticles on highly porous carbon nanofiber (N-PCNF) electrodes exhibited excellent cycling and C-rate performance with a high reversible capacity of around 280 mA h g -1 in sodium ion batteries. Moreover, at 1000 mA g -1 , a high reversible capacity of 172 mA h g -1 was observed after 300 cycles. The superior electrochemical properties were attributed to a highly porous structure with enlarged d-spacings, enriched defects and active sites due to nitrogen doping. The electrochemical results prove that N-PCNF electrodes are promising electrode materials for high performance sodium ion batteries.
