Critical slowing of the spin and charge density wave order in thin film Cr following photoexcitation

We report on the evolution of the charge density wave (CDW) and spin density wave (SDW) orders of a chromium film following photoexcitation with an ultrafast optical laser pulse. The CDW is measured by ultrafast time-resolved x-ray diffraction of the CDW satellite that tracks the suppression and recovery of the CDW following photoexcitation. We find that as the temperature of the film approaches a discontinuous phase transition in the CDW and SDW orders, the time scales of recovery increase exponentially from the expected thermal time scales. We extend a Landau model for SDW systems to account for this critical slowing with the appropriate boundary conditions imposed by the geometry of the thin film system. This model allows us to assess the energy barrier between the available CDW/SDW states with different spatial periodicities.

Topological spin/structure couplings in layered chiral magnet Cr 1/3 TaS 2 : The discovery of spiral magnetic superstructure

Significance Magnets in which chirality of crystal lattice gives rise to noncollinear spin orders are ideal playgrounds for studies of novel physical phenomena originating from the nontrivial topology of magnetic textures. Most studies have been focused on homochiral materials, while topological magnetic states of heterochiral magnets have rarely been explored. Here, we report a layered chiral helimagnet with highly tunable topological heterochiral states. Tuning the chiral domain density, we have observed a topological magnetic texture that has the form of a spiral unfolding in the radial direction. In weak in-plane fields, this spiral magnetic superstructure transforms into a nonspiral array of concentric rings. Our results open a horizon for studies of tunable topological magnetic textures.

First identification of resonant states in the {sup 45}V(p, {gamma}){sup 46}Cr reaction and their influence on the production of {sup 44}Ti in Core Collapse Supernovae

The observation of active 44Ti in supernova remnants offers the potential to solve one of the most debated questions in modern astrophysics, the exact underlying explosion mechanism of core collapse supernovae (CCSNe). In particular, a comparison between the predicted synthesized yield of 44Ti and the ejected flux is expected to allow for a determination of the mass cut of the star. Unfortunately, such comparisons are currently severely hindered by large uncertainties in the nuclear reactions governing the production and destruction of 44Ti. On this note, the astrophysical 45Vðp; γÞ46Cr reaction is expected to play a decisive role. We present the first experimental information on resonant states in the 45Vðp; γÞ46Cr reaction. Excitation energies have been measured with high precision for ten previously unknown, low-spin, proton-unbound states in 46Cr, and spin-parity-assignment constraints have been made using observed γ-decay patterns and shell-model calculations. We find that an l ¼ 1 resonance at 714 keV dominates the 45Vðp; γÞ46Cr reaction for the entire temperature range of α-rich freezeout. Moreover, the nominal rate is found to be ∼25–50% of previous estimates for T > 1.2 GK, indicating an increase in 44Ti production in CCSNe of ∼20–35%.

Nonharmonic contributions to the high-temperature phonon thermodynamics of Cr

Here, phonon densities of states (DOSs) of body-centered cubic chromium were measured by time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering at temperatures up to 1493 K. Density functional theory calculations with both quasiharmonic (QH) and anharmonic (AH) methods were performed at temperatures above the Néel temperature. Features in the phonon DOSs decrease in energy (soften) substantially with temperature. A Born–von Kármán analysis using fits to the experimental DOSs reveals a softening of almost 17% of the high-transverse phonon branch between 330 and 1493 K. The low-transverse branch changes by approximately half this amount. The AH calculations capture the observed behavior of the two transverse phonon branches, but the QH calculations give some inverted trends. Vibrational entropies from phonons and electrons are obtained, and their sum is in excellent agreement with the entropy of chromium obtained by calorimetry, indicating that above 330 K, no explicit temperature-dependent magnetic contributions are necessary.

Comparative study on the formation of Cr and Ti ohmic contacts to (001) β -Ga 2 O 3

Here, a comparative study of Cr/Au and Ti/Au ohmic contacts on (001) β-Ga 2 O 3 was conducted. The electrical behavior from current-voltage measurements and the interfacial composition and microstructure as determined from high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with energy dispersive x-ray analysis were compared for the different contacts at selected points in an annealing series (300–700 °C, 1 min. anneals in N 2 ). Cr/Au contacts became ohmic at temperatures (300–350 °C) approximately 50–100 °C lower than Ti/Au contacts (400–450 °C). Cr/Au and Ti/Au contacts demonstrated optimal ohmic behavior (lowest resistance) when annealed to 450–500 and 500–600 °C, respectively, with Ti/Au contacts yielding a lower total resistance than Cr/Au. Cross-sectional TEM images of Cr/Au contacts annealed at 450 °C revealed the presence of Au nanoclusters at the Ga 2 O 3 interface and CrO x layers at both the top of the contact and the Ga 2 O 3 interface. Whereas TiO x also formed at the top and bottom interfaces in 450 °C-annealed Ti/Au contacts, the TiO x surface layer appeared to be variable in thickness and/or discontinuous, unlike the CrO x surface layer. Au nanoclusters were not detected at the interface in the Ti/Au contacts. The interdiffusion and oxidation observed in both contact metallizations point to the need for diffusion barriers that may allow these contacts to be used in future Ga 2 O 3 -based devices that operate at elevated temperatures.

Resistance to oxyimino-cephalosporins conferred by an alternative mechanism of hydrolysis by the Acinetobacter -derived cephalosporinase-33 (ADC-33), a class C β-lactamase present in carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CR Ab )

ABSTRACT Antimicrobial resistance inAcinetobacter baumanniiis partly mediated by chromosomal class C β-lactamases, theAcinetobacter-derived cephalosporinases (ADCs). Recently, a growing number of emerging variants were described, expanding this threat. Consistent with other β-lactamases, one of the main areas of variance exists in the Ω-loop region near the site of cephalosporin binding. Interestingly, a common alanine duplication (Adup) is found in this region. Herein, we studied specific Adup variants expressed in a uniformEscherichia coligenetic background that demonstrated high-level resistance to multiple oxyimino-cephalosporins. For ceftolozane and ceftazidime, the Adup ADCs significantly increased levels of resistance (minimum inhibitory concentration [MIC] ≥ 512 µg/mL and MIC ≥ 1,024 µg/mL, respectively). These observations were consistent with the increasedk cat /K M for ceftazidime. For cefiderocol, three Adup variants exhibited increased MICs and increasedk cat /K M for this compound. Timed electrospray ionization mass spectrometry demonstrated stable cephalosporin:ADC adducts with ADC-30 (non-Adup), but not with ADC-33 (Adup), consistent with turnover. The X-ray crystal structure of Adup variant ADC-33 in complex with ceftazidime was determined (1.57 Å resolution) and suggests that increased turnover is facilitated by conformational changes (shift in Tyr221 and orientation of the oxyimino portion of the R1 side chain) and repositioning of water in the active site. These changes appear to favor substrate-assisted catalysis as an alternative mechanism to base-assisted catalysis. These studies also provide unprecedented insight into the mechanism underlying oxyimino-cephalosporin hydrolysis by expanded-spectrum ADC β-lactamases and possibly other class C β-lactamases, which is of critical importance to future drug design. IMPORTANCE The characterization of emergingAcinetobacter-derived cephalosporinase (ADC) variants is necessary to understand the increasing resistance to β-lactam antibiotics inAcinetobacterspp. In this study, cefiderocol retains effectiveness against ADC variants with and without an Ω-loop alanine duplication (Adup). However, the presence of the Adup appears to introduce loop flexibility and structural alterations resulting in increased resistance and steady-state turnover of larger cephalosporins. Further characterization provides unprecedented insight into the mechanism of cephalosporin hydrolysis by ADC β-lactamases and supports a concomitant increase in ADC structural flexibility and cephalosporin affinity that leads to more efficient hydrolysis. In addition, the crystal structure of ADC-33 in complex with ceftazidime is consistent with a substrate-assisted catalysis mechanism. The structural differences in the ADC-33 active site leading to ceftazidime catalysis provide a better understanding of β-lactamase Adup variants and open important opportunities for future drug design and development.

Report on FY 2021 testing in support of integrating Alloy 800H and 2.25Cr-1Mo for EPP analysis

The use of simplified Elastic-Perfectly Plastic (EPP) design methods avoids the complexities and limitations of the elastic analysis approach in evaluating strain limits and creep-fatigue damage for Class A metallic coolant boundary components in ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section III, Division 5, Subsection HB, Subpart B. No stress classification and linearization are required in the EPP methods. Further, the strain limits and creep-fatigue damage evaluation procedures based on elastic analysis results were developed for the reactor operating conditions where uncoupled, rate-independent plasticity and stationary creep can be used to approximate the deformation in the component adequately. But at very high temperatures, the deformation is rate-dependent, and it can only be approximated adequately by unified viscoplastic model. Thus, for example, the elastic analysis approach cannot be used to evaluate strain limits and creep-fatigue damage for Alloy 617 above 650 °C. The EPP methods remove the temperature restriction. They can be used to evaluate strain limits and creep-fatigue damage for the full range of temperatures.

Solubility of An(OH) 3 am and An(OH) 3 cr in the presence of Citrate and EDTA

The solubility of An(III), which pertains to Pu(III), Am(III), and Cm(III), in brine is an important contributor in WIPP (Waste Isolation Pilot Plant) performance assessment (PA) models to calculate the potential release of transuranic elements in the near-field environment of the WIPP repository. Americium, although present in much smaller quantities than plutonium (~ 336 kg on year 2033 is potentially WIPP-bound primarily as Am-241), has a significant impact on release due to its higher activity during the earlier times of repository history (~26% initially, decreasing to 17% and ~0% at 1000 and 10,000 years after emplacement) (SOTERM, 2019). Lanthanide analogues such as Nd 3+ possess physical and chemical characteristics that allow them to be used to examine the chemical behavior of trivalent actinides (Lucchini, et al., 2007).
