Potential advantages of the spaced antenna method for operational wind profiling, part 3.1B

The problem of very short-range forecasting is twofold. It is necessary to understand the processes that are being forecasted, and data appropriate to the scale of interest has to be generated. Coherent VHF and UHF radars are being used for operational wind profiling and are providing part of the solution to the data-acquisition problem. The Profiler system operated by the Wave Propagation Laboratory at NOAA has already shown great promise. As a result, plans are being considred for expanding the network of radars to cover a larger area of the country. The Profiler uses what is commonly referred to as the Doppler method for measuring winds. Two beams are pointed off-vertical, and the Doppler shift of the echo determines the line-of-sight velocity. The velocity components along the beams are then translated to horizontal wind components. A number of possible advantages of the spaced antennas (SA) method for operational wind profiling are discussed.

The analysis of forest policy using Landsat multi-spectral scanner data and geographic information systems

The role of Landsat multi-spectral scanner (MSS) data for forest policy analysis in the state of California has been investigated. The combined requirements for physical, socio-economic, and institutional data in policy analysis were studied to explain potential data needs. A statewide MSS data and general land cover classification was created from which country-wide data sets could be extracted for detailed analyses. The potential to combine point sample data with MSS data was examined as a means to improve specificity in estimations. MSS data was incorporated into geographic information systems to demonstrate modeling techniques using abiotic, biotic, and socio-economic data layers. The review of system configurations to help the California Department of Forestry (CDF) acquire the capability demonstrated resulted in a sequence of options for implementation.

Systems concept for speech technology application in general aviation

The application potential of voice recognition and synthesis circuits for general aviation, single-pilot IFR (SPIFR) situations is examined. The viewpoint of the pilot was central to workload analyses and assessment of the effectiveness of the voice systems. A twin-engine, high performance general aviation aircraft on a cross-country fixed route was employed as the study model. No actual control movements were considered and other possible functions were scored by three IFR-rated instructors. The SPIFR was concluded helpful in alleviating visual and manual workloads during take-off, approach and landing, particularly for data retrieval and entry tasks. Voice synthesis was an aid in alerting a pilot to in-flight problems. It is expected that usable systems will be available within 5 yr.

Communications-imposed pilot workload - A comparison of sixteen estimation techniques

Sixteen potential metrics of mental workload were investigated in regard to their relative sensitivity to communications load and their differential intrusion on primary task performance. A moving-base flight simulator was used to present three cross-country flights to each of 30 subject pilots, each flight varying only in the difficulty of the inherent communications requirements. With the exception of the rating scale measures, which were obtained immediately post-flight, all measures were taken over a seven minute segment of the flight task. The results indicated that both the Modified Cooper-Harper and the workload Multi-descriptor rating scales were reliably sensitive to changes in communications load. Also, the secondary task measure of time estimation and the physiological measure of pupil diameter yielded sensitivity. As expected, those primary task measures which were direct measures of communicative performance were also sensitive to load, while aircraft control primary task measures were not, attesting to the task-specificity of such measures. Finally, the intrusion analysis revealed no differential interference between workload measures.

The US Space Station programme

The Manned Space Station (MSS) involves NASA, and other countries, in the operation, maintenance and expansion of a permanent space facility. The extensive use of automation and robotics will advance those fields, and experimentation will be carried out in scientific and potentially commercial projects. The MSS will provide a base for astronomical observations, spacecraft assembly, refurbishment and repair, transportation intersection, staging for interplanetary exploration, and storage. Finally, MSS operations will be performed semi-autonomously from ground control. Phase B analysis is nearing completion, and precedes hardware development. Studies are being performed on generic advanced technologies which can reliably and flexibly be incorporated into the MSS, such as attitude control and stabilization, power, thermal, environmental and life support control, auxiliary propulsion, data management, etc. Guidelines are also being formulated regarding the areas of participation by other nations.

Optical photometry of the 1982-1984 eclipse of Epsilon Aurigae

From slightly before the 1982-1984 eclipse of Epsilon Aurigae to the present observers from around the world have been making photoelectric photometry observations of this star system. Over 2000 UBV observations have been reported as well as observations in the R, I, J, H, K, L, M, N, and Q bandpasses plus the y, b, v, and u bandpasses. Twenty nine observers from 9 countries submitted photometry data to the campaign. The data have shown many interesting features of the star system including a Cepheid-like pulsation, flare activity, mid-eclipse brightening, post egress brightening, plus other strange activity.

UBV photometry of the 1982-4 eclipse of Epsilon Aurigae: A discussion of the observed light curves

At least 29 observers in nine countries have contributed photometric measurements of Epsilon Aurigae during the recent observational campaign. The present discussion is limited to data submitted by J. L. Hopkins of the Hopkins Phoenix Observatory and S. I. Ingvarsson of the Tjornisland Astronomical Observatory. Both sources are on the UBV system, with no significant systematic differences. Combined, these two sources cover the entire eclipse, from pre-ingress up to the present (April 1985). It should be noted that this eclipse is the first to have complete photometric coverage in all three broadband filters U, B, and V.

Antarctic Meteorite Newsletter, Volume 8, Number 2

Requests for samples are welcomed from research scientists of all countries, regardless of their current state of funding for meteorite studies. All sample requests will be reviewed by the Meteorite Working Group (MWG), a peer-review committee that guides the collection, curation, allocation, and distribution of the U.S. Antarctic meteorites. Issurance of samples does not imply a commitment by any agency to fund the proposed research. Requests for financial support must be submitted separately to the appropriate funding agencies. As a matter of policy, U.S. Antarctic meteorites are the property of the National Science Foundation and all allocations are subject to recall.

Some comparisons of US and USSR aircraft design developments

A review is given of the design and development of some US and USSR aircraft. The emphasis is on the historical development of large aircraft-civil and military transports and bombers. Design trends are somewhat similar for the two countries and indications are that some fundamental characteristics are dictated more by ideological differences rather than technological differences. A brief description is given in a more or less chronological order of the major bomber aircraft, major civil and military transport aircraft, and the development of the air transport systems.

Buoy systems during the PGGE

The data quality, impact, and application of various buoy systems deployed during the FGGE are discussed. Three general categories of buoy systems provided critical coverage of environmental phenomena in the Arctic Ocean basin, the tropical oceans, and the Southern Hemisphere. Results of the added pressure information in the Arctic are presented. The impacts of the Southern Hemisphere buoy systems on pressure fields, SST fields, and ocean circulation are provided. Those findings from the tropical drifters, relevant to the FGGE time scales, are indicated. All three types of buoy systems, each uniquely engineered for application in different regions of our planet, contributed to the broad objective of advancing weather and climate predictions in several special ways. Comments are provided about the role of buoys in a future observing system, and a consortium of interested countries is strongly advocated in order to accelerate this role.

An overview of European space transportation systems

With the completion of the launch rocket series Ariane 1 to 4, Europe will have reached the same capacity to transport commercial payloads as the USA has with the Space Shuttle and the kick stages which are presently operative. The near term development of these capacities would require Europe to develop a larger launch rocket, Araine 5. Further motivations for this rocket are access to manned spaceflight, the development of an European space station, and the demand for shuttle technology. Shuttle technology is the subject of research being done in France on the winged re-entry vehicle Hermes. Operation of the European space station Columbus will require development of an interorbital transport system to facilitate traffic between the various segments of the space station. All European space transportation systems will have to match their quality to that of the other countries involve in space flight. All areas of development are marked not only by possible cooperation but also by increased competition because of increasing commercialization of space flight.

Processes and process development in Japan

The commercialization of solar power generation necessitates the development of low cost manufacturing method of silicon suitable for solar cells. The manufacturing methods of semiconductor grade silicon (SEG-Si) and the development of solar grade silicon (SOG-Si) in foreign countries was investigated. It was concluded that the most efficient method of developing such materials was the hydrogen reduction process of trichlorosilane (TCS), using a fluidized bed reactor. The low cost reduction of polysilicon requires cost reductions of raw materials, energy, labor, and capital. These conditions were carefully reviewed. The overall conclusion was that a development program should be based on the TCS-FBR process and that the experimental program should be conducted in test facilities capable of producing 10 tons of silicon granules per year.

Analyses and tests for design of an electro-impulse de-icing system

De-icing of aircraft by using the electro-magnetic impulse phenomenon was proposed and demonstrated in several European countries. However, it is not available as a developed system due to lack of research on the basic physical mechanisms and necessary design parameters. The de-icing is accomplished by rapidly discharging high voltage capacitors into a wire coil rigidly supported just inside the aircraft skin. Induced eddy currents in the skin create a repulsive force resulting in a hammer-like force which cracks, de-bonds, and expels ice on the skin surface. The promised advantages are very low energy, high reliability of de-icing, and low maintenance. Three years of Electo-Impulse De-icing (EIDI) research is summarized and the analytical studies and results of testing done in the laboratory, in the NASA Icing Research Tunnel, and in flight are presented. If properly designed, EIDI was demonstrated to be an effective and practical ice protection system for small aircraft, turbojet engine inlets, elements of transport aircraft, and shows promise for use on helicopter rotor blades. Included are practical techniques of fabrication of impulse coils and their mountings. The use of EIDI with nonmetallic surface materials is also described.
