DBD plasma-thermal tandem reactors for converting biogas to carbon nanofibers

Sequestering greenhouse gases (CO 2 and CH 4 ) in biogas into carbon nanofibers (CNF) offers a promising route to mitigate carbon emissions and create value-added solid carbon materials. Coupling non-thermal plasma with a thermocatalytic reactor in a tandem setup is a promising approach for tandem reactions of dry reforming of methane to synthesis gas and its subsequent conversion to CNF. Various parameters were studied to determine their effects on CNF growth. Decreasing the total flow rate resulted in an increase in CNF growth. Increasing the plasma power input or the plasma zone length also enhanced the production of CNF. These results illustrate that plasma-thermal tandem reactors can be used to synthesize CNF from biogas with tunable parameters that may be further optimized in future studies.

Converting existing optical detectors into fast x-ray detectors

Here, the very short burn time and small size of burning plasmas created at advanced laser-fusion facilities will require high-spatial-resolution imaging diagnostics with fast time resolution. These instruments will need to function in an environment of extremely large neutron fluxes that will cause conventional diagnostics to fail because of radiation damage and induced background levels. One solution to this challenge is to perform an ultrafast conversion of the x-ray signals into the optical regime before the neutrons are able to reach the detector and then to relay image the signal out of the chamber and into a shielded bunker, protected from the effects of these neutrons. With this goal in mind, the OMEGA laser was used to demonstrate high-temporal-resolution x-ray imaging by using an x-ray snout to image an imploding backlighter capsule onto a semiconductor. The semiconductor was simultaneously probed with the existing velocity interferometry system for any surface reflector (VISAR) diagnostic, which uses an optical streak camera and provided a one-dimensional image of the phase in the semiconductor as a function of time. The phase induced in the semiconductor was linearly proportional to the x-ray emission from the backlighter capsule. This approach would then allow a sacrificial semiconductor to be attached at the end of an optical train with the VISAR and optical streak camera placed in a shielded bunker to operate in a high neutron environment and obtain time-dependent one-dimensional x-ray images or time-dependent x-ray spectra from a burning plasma.

A mixed-valent Fe(II)Fe(III) species converts cysteine to an oxazolone/thioamide pair in methanobactin biosynthesis

Methanobactins (Mbns), copper-binding peptidic compounds produced by some bacteria, are candidate therapeutics for human diseases of copper overload. The paired oxazolone-thioamide bidentate ligands of methanobactins are generated from cysteine residues in a precursor peptide, MbnA, by the MbnBC enzyme complex. MbnBC activity depends on the presence of iron and oxygen, but the catalytically active form has not been identified. Here, we provide evidence that a dinuclear Fe(II)Fe(III) center in MbnB, which is the only representative of a >13,000-member protein family to be characterized, is responsible for this reaction. These findings expand the known roles of diiron enzymes in biology and set the stage for mechanistic understanding, and ultimately engineering, of the MbnBC biosynthetic complex.

New high-sensitivity searches for neutrons converting into antineutrons and/or sterile neutrons at the HIBEAM/NNBAR experiment at the European Spallation Source

The violation of baryon number, , is an essential ingredient for the preferential creation of matter over antimatter needed to account for the observed baryon asymmetry in the Universe. However, such a process has yet to be experimentally observed. The HIBEAM/NNBAR program is a proposed two-stage experiment at the European Spallation Source to search for baryon number violation. The program will include high-sensitivity searches for processes that violate baryon number by one or two units: free neutron–antineutron oscillation () via mixing, neutron–antineutron oscillation via regeneration from a sterile neutron state (), and neutron disappearance (n → n′); the effective process of neutron regeneration () is also possible. The program can be used to discover and characterize mixing in the neutron, antineutron and sterile neutron sectors. The experiment addresses topical open questions such as the origins of baryogenesis and the nature of dark matter, and is sensitive to scales of new physics substantially in excess of those available at colliders. A goal of the program is to open a discovery window to neutron conversion probabilities (sensitivities) by up to three orders of magnitude compared with previous searches. The opportunity to make such a leap in sensitivity tests should not be squandered. The experiment pulls together a diverse international team of physicists from the particle (collider and low energy) and nuclear physics communities, while also including specialists in neutronics and magnetics.

Attempts to develop an enzyme converting DHIV to KIV

Abstract Dihydroxy-acid dehydratase (DHAD) catalyzes the dehydration of R-2,3-dihydroxyisovalerate (DHIV) to 2-ketoisovalerate (KIV) using an Fe-S cluster as a cofactor, which is sensitive to oxidation and expensive to synthesize. In contrast, sugar acid dehydratases catalyze the same chemical reactions using a magnesium ion. Here, we attempted to substitute the high-cost DHAD with a cost-efficient engineered sugar acid dehydratase using computational protein design (CPD). First, we tried without success to modify the binding pocket of a sugar acid dehydratase to accommodate the smaller, more hydrophobic DHIV. Then, we used a chemically activated substrate analog to react with sugar acid dehydratases or other enolase superfamily enzymes. Mandelate racemase from Pseudomonas putida (PpManR) and the putative sugar acid dehydratase from Salmonella typhimurium (StPutD) showed beta-elimination activity towards chlorolactate (CLD). CPD combined with medium-throughput selection improved the PpManR kcat/KM for CLD by four-fold. However, these enzyme variants did not show dehydration activity towards DHIV. Lastly, assuming phosphorylation could also be a good activation mechanism, we found that mevalonate-3-kinase (M3K) from Picrophilus torridus (PtM3K) exhibited adenosine triphosphate (ATP) hydrolysis activity when mixed with DHIV, indicating phosphorylation activity towards DHIV. Engineering PpManR or StPutD to accept 3-phospho-DHIV as a substrate was performed, but no variants with the desired activity were obtained.

Pulse and Polarization Structures in Axion-Converted X-Rays from Pulsars

Neutron stars (NSs) with their strong magnetic fields and hot dense cores could be powerful probes of axions, a classic benchmark of feebly coupled new particles, through abundant production of axions with the axion-nucleon coupling and subsequent conversion into x-rays due to the axion-photon coupling. In this Letter, we point out that the pulsation structures in both the intensity and polarization of x-rays from NSs could provide us additional information about axions and their couplings. We develop new analytical formalisms of pulsation-polarization structure applicable to a wide range of NSs in the axion scenario and argue that they hold in complicated astrophysical environments. As a case study, we apply our formalism to a representative X-ray Dim Isolated Neutron Star, RX J1856.6-3754, with an unexpected hard x-ray excess which might be axion induced. We show with an updated fit that the axion explanation is compatible with both the intensity and pulsation data available, and combining the pulsation data does not shift the posterior by more than 1⁢𝜎. Yet, the preferred parameter space is close to being excluded by other astrophysical constraints. With a 75% reduction of the uncertainties in the pulsation data, we could potentially draw a definite conclusion on the axion-induced x-rays at more than 3⁢𝜎 level.

Light-Induced Dynamic Frequency Shifting of Microwave Photons in a Superconducting Electro-Optic Converter

Hybrid superconducting-photonic microresonators are a promising platform for realizing microwave-to-optical transduction. However, the absorption of scattered photons by the superconductors leads to unintended microwave resonance-frequency variation and line-width broadening. Here, we experimentally study the dynamics of this effect and its impact on microwave-to-optics conversion in an integrated lithium niobate–superconductor hybrid-resonator platform. Here, we unveil an adiabatic frequency shifting of the intracavity microwave photons induced by the fast photoresponses of the thin-film superconducting resonator. As a result, the temporal and spectral responses of electro-optics transduction are modified and well described by our theoretical model. This work provides insights into the light-induced conversion dynamics that must be considered in future designs of hybrid superconducting-photonic system.

Convert Widespread Paraelectric Perovskite to Ferroelectrics

While nature provides a plethora of perovskite materials, only a few exhibit large ferroelectricity and possibly multiferroicity. The majority of perovskite materials have the nonpolar CaTiO 3 (CTO) structure, limiting the scope of their applications. Based on the effective Hamiltonian model as well as first-principles calculations, we propose a general thin-film design method to stabilize the functional BiFeO 3 (BFO)- type structure, which is a common metastable structure in widespread CTO-type perovskite oxides. It is found that the improper antiferroelectricity in CTO-type perovskite and ferroelectricity in BFO-type perovskite have distinct dependences on mechanical and electric boundary conditions, both of which involve oxygen octahedral rotation and tilt. Thus the above difference can be used to stabilize the highly polar BFO-type structure in many CTO-type perovskite materials.

Converting three-space matrices to equivalent six-space matrices for Delone scalars in S 6

The transformations from the primitive cells of the centered Bravais lattices to the corresponding centered cells have conventionally been listed as three-by-three matrices that transform three-space lattice vectors. Using those three-by-three matrices when working in the six-dimensional space of lattices represented as Selling scalars as used in Delone (Delaunay) reduction, one could transform to the three-space representation, apply the three-by-three matrices and then back-transform to the six-space representation, but it is much simpler to have the equivalent six-by-six matrices and apply them directly. The general form of the transformation from the three-space matrix to the corresponding matrix operating on Selling scalars (expressed in space S 6 ) is derived, and the particular S 6 matrices for the centered Delone types are listed. (Note: in his later publications, Boris Delaunay used the Russian version of his surname, Delone.)

Control and Management of Multiple Converters in a Residential Smart Grid

Power electronic systems are becoming a staple building block for electric grid networks. However, these systems have been largely designed to grid integrate in ad hoc configurations with little or no coordination of control. This work proposes a central controller and power electronic system hardware and software design for a residential system (photovoltaic, energy storage and residential building). This system supports auto-integration, plug and play capabilities, and optimal energy management to meet different use cases. Modelling and multi-day testing of the system have been conducted in a controller hardware-in-the-loop (C-HIL) testbed. Multiple use cases and pricing options have been considered as part of the simulation and testing. Results are presented of these systems as a proof of principle.

Converting Clinical Pathways to BPM+ Standards: A Case Study in Stable Ischemic Heart Disease

Clinical pathways (CPs) are structured healthcare plans designed to implement evidence-based clinical guidelines, medical algorithms, and protocols. In recent years, a community called BPM+ Health has worked to establish a shareable and computer-consumable representation of CP, leveraging standard notations. These notations, collectively referred to as BPM+, include the Business Process Management and Notation (BPMN), Case Management Model and Notation (CMMN), and Decision Model and Notation (DMN), which aim to support clinical management and standardized communication between different stakeholders. However, the adaptation of these notations for the existing guidelines has largely been left unexplored. This paper introduces procedural steps and criteria considerations to apply components of BPM+ notations to reconstruct a guideline for Stable Ischemic Heart Disease. This paper describes how each of the three different notations is mapped to a medical guideline and discusses the advantages and limitations of representing CPs with BPM+ as compared with paper-based medical guidelines.
