Due to increasingly high DC link voltages and further advancements in the current density of silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFETs, it has become evident that conventional IGBT protection methods are not sufficient to protect these devices from overcurrent during low-inductance fault events. The use of an air core Rogowski coil topology was explored to see if it could mitigate these hard fault events. The design of this circuit resulted in safe shutdown of a low impedance phase-tophase fault, tested up to DC link voltages of 1 kV.
Stop watch which may be remotely controlled by the use of a solenoid mechanism is described. When the solenoid is energized, the coil spring pulls the lever arm and starts the balance wheel. When it is not energized, the spring pulls the lever and stops the watch.
Heat and corrosion resistant preheater elements are used in oxide induction furnaces to raise the temperature to the level for conducting electricity. These preheater elements are then removed and the induction coil energized.
Evidence is presented which shows that the Australian and Java tektites entered the earth's atmosphere and experienced ablation by severe aerodynamic heating in hypervelocity flight. The laboratory experiments on hypervelocity ablation have reproduced ring-wave flow ridges and coiled circumferential flanges like those found on certain of these tektites. Systematic striae distortions exhibited in a thin layer beneath the front surface of australites also are reproduced in the laboratory ablation experiments, and are shown to correspond to the calculated distortions for aerodynamic ablation of a glass. About 98 percent of Australian tektites represent aerodynamically stable configurations during the ablative portion of an entry trajectory. Certain meteorites exhibit surface features similar to those on tektites.
Oao spacecraft momentum regulated by torque created by the interaction of current carrying coils with the earth magnetic field
It is shown how the gravity-gradient effect may be utilized to design a long-lived, earth-pointing satellite attitude control system which requires no fuel supplies, attitude sensors or active control equipment. This two-body system is provided with a magnetic hysteresis damper which effectively damps out oscillations (librations) about the local vertical. The long rods, which must be extended in space from coiled up metal tapes, provide the required large moments of inertia and possess adequate rigidity and sufficient strength to endure the rigors of the extension process. The system is compatible with the requirements of multiple satellite launchings from a single last-stage vehicle. Analysis indicates that the gravitational torques are sufficient to keep the disturbing effects of solar radiation pressure, residual magnetic dipole moments, orbit eccentricity, rod curvature, eddy currents, and meteorite impacts within tolerable limits. It is believed that the high-performance, earth-pointing system described and analyzed in this paper represents an essential step in the development of high-capacity communications satellites requiring long life.

Dynamic instabilities of aurora, including small- scale folding, omega band and large-scale wavy and coiling structures
Coil springs wound with maximum initial tension in a three-truss, closed loop structure form a collapsible truss structure. The truss automatically expands and provides excellent rigidity and close dimensional tolerance when expanded.
Omnidirectional antennas and solar panels can be supported by a thin-walled tubular strut. Silicon grease is used as the vibration-damping medium and a coil spring supports static loads.
Distortions around weld areas on sheet-aluminum tanks and other structures are removed with a portable electromagnetic hammer. The hammer incorporates a coil that generates a controlled high-energy pulsed magnetic field over localized areas on the metal surface.
Thin tungsten wire and tungsten tubing are brazed together using a contacting coil of nickel wire heated to its melting point in an inert-gas atmosphere. This method is also effective for brazing tungsten to tungsten-rhenium parts.
