Impeller shroud to casing leakage flow simulations in the Space Shuttle Main Engine high pressure fuel pump

Quasi-three-dimensional Navier-Stokes calculations were carried out for the Space Shuttle Main Engine high-pressure fuel pump to simulate the impeller shroud to casing leakage flow. This flow geometry was modeled as an axisymmetric cavity flow with a stationary surface representing the casing, and a rotating surface denoting the impeller. A 63 x 81-node mesh provided sufficient resolution in the regions of greatest flow variations and reduced the effects of numerical diffusion. The turbulence field was closed with the high Reynolds number form of the k-epsilon model supplemented with wall functions in the vicinity of the walls. Finally, a parametric study quantified the effects of through mass flow changes on this leakage flow.

A cure-rate model for the Shuttle filament-wound case

An epoxy and carbon fiber composite has been used to produce a light-weight rocket case for the Space Shuttle. A kinetic model is developed which can predict the extent of epoxy conversion during the winding and curing of the case. The model accounts for both chemical and physical kinetics. In the model, chemical kinetics occur exclusively up to the time the transition temperature equals the reaction temperature. At this point the resin begins to solidify and the rate of this process limits the rate of epoxy conversion. A comparison of predicted and actual epoxy conversion is presented for isothermal and temperature programmed cure schedules.

Structural analysis of a bolted joint concept for the space shuttle's solid rocket motor casing

The Space Shuttle Challenger accident is thought to have been caused by the failure of one of the tang-clevis joints joining together the casing segments of the Solid Rocket Motors (SRM). Excessive displacement between the tang and clevis, possibly unseating the O-ring seals, may have initiated the resulting accident. An effort was made at NASA Langley Research Center to design an alternative concept for mating the casing segments. A bolted flange joint concept was designed and analyzed to determine if the concept would effectively maintain a seal while minimizing joint weight and controlling stress levels. It is shown that under the loading conditions analyzed the seal area of the joint remains seated. The only potential stress problem is a stress concentration in the flange at the edge of the bolt hole, which is highly localized. While heavier than the existing joint, this concept does have some advantages making the bolted joint an attractive alternative.

Dynamical mass determinations for the white dwarf components of HZ 9 and Case 1

Radial-velocity curves for both components of the short-period, white dwarf M dwarf binary systems Case 1 and HZ 9 have been determined from 1-A-resolution spectra obtained at the MMT. The radial-velocity curves for the M dwarf components agree well with previous determinations. The new data have been used to estimate masses for the white dwarfs, yielding 0.38 solar mass for the Case 1 DA and 0.51 solar mass for the HZ 9 DA, with 1sigma uncertainties of about 0.1 solar mass.

Predicting the velocity and azimuth of fragments generated by the range destruction or random failure of rocket casings and tankage

A calculational method is described which provides a powerful tool for predicting solid rocket motor (SRM) casing and liquid rocket tankage fragmentation response. The approach properly partitions the available impulse to each major system-mass component. It uses the Pisces code developed by Physics International to couple the forces generated by an Eulerian-modeled gas flow field to a Lagrangian-modeled fuel and casing system. The details of the predictive analytical modeling process and the development of normalized relations for momentum partition as a function of SRM burn time and initial geometry are discussed. Methods for applying similar modeling techniques to liquid-tankage-overpressure failures are also discussed. Good agreement between predictions and observations are obtained for five specific events.

PDA: A coupling of knowledge and memory for case-based reasoning

Problem solving in most domains requires reference to past knowledge and experience whether such knowledge is represented as rules, decision trees, networks or any variant of attributed graphs. Regardless of the representational form employed, designers of expert systems rarely make a distinction between the static and dynamic aspects of the system's knowledge base. The current paper clearly distinguishes between knowledge-based and memory-based reasoning where the former in its most pure sense is characterized by a static knowledge based resulting in a relatively brittle expert system while the latter is dynamic and analogous to the functions of human memory which learns from experience. The paper discusses the design of an advisory system which combines a knowledge base consisting of domain vocabulary and default dependencies between concepts with a dynamic conceptual memory which stores experimental knowledge in the form of cases. The case memory organizes past experience in the form of MOPs (memory organization packets) and sub-MOPs. Each MOP consists of a context frame and a set of indices. The context frame contains information about the features (norms) common to all the events and sub-MOPs indexed under it.

Case-based reasoning in design: An apologia

Three positions are presented and defended: the process of generating solutions in problem solving is viewable as a design task; case-based reasoning is a strong method of problem solving; and a synergism exists between case-based reasoning and design problem solving.

Regional conditions during the 25 October 1986 FIRE cirrus/altocumulus case study

The regional cloud and meteorological conditions are described for this case using satellite imagery (GOES), dual polarization lidar data, NWS radar, NMC analyses, rawinsonde data including special soundings, and analyzed vertical motions. These observations are interpreted with respect to relationships between the observed cloud characteristics and corresponding atmospheric structure. Similarities with the 27 to 28 Oct. FIRE Cirrus Case Study are noted.

Solid rocket motor case insulation bond nondestructive evaluation

An effective insulator is needed to isolate the motor case from the hot combustion gases in such large solid rocket motors (SRMs) as those of the Space Shuttle, in order to preserve motor case integrity. An account is presently given of the ultrasonic NDE techniques employed to characterize the Space Shuttle's redesigned SRM. It is noted that current inspection procedures are sensitive to conditions that could result in anomalous ultrasonic indications; these conditions encompass (1) inner-outer surface nonparallelism, (2) sensor-surface nonparallelism, (3) contact pressure variation, (4) transducer coupling shoe wear, and (5) surface waviness. Both short-term and long-term NDE procedure recommendations are made.

Self-collimated electromagnetic jets from magnetized accretion disks - The even-symmetry case

This paper extends the previous treatment (Lovelace et al., 1987) of the origin of self-collimated EM jets to the case of even field symmetry, where the magnetic flux function Psi(r, z) is an even function of z. A viscous resistive accretion disk is assumed to surround a black hole with a force-free plasma outside of the disk. Inside the disk, the induction equation is solved for Psi(r, z) and the toroidal magnetic field. Outside the disk, previous results are used to study the formation of self-collimated EM jets. In contrast with the odd-symmetry case, for even symmetry the toroidal magnetic field acts to vertically compress the disk; a comparatively large toroidal magnetic field can exist inside the disk; and an appreciable fraction (possibly all) of the available accretion power can go into the jets.

The cleanroom case study in the Software Engineering Laboratory: Project description and early analysis

This case study analyzes the application of the cleanroom software development methodology to the development of production software at the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center. The cleanroom methodology emphasizes human discipline in program verification to produce reliable software products that are right the first time. Preliminary analysis of the cleanroom case study shows that the method can be applied successfully in the FDD environment and may increase staff productivity and product quality. Compared to typical Software Engineering Laboratory (SEL) activities, there is evidence of lower failure rates, a more complete and consistent set of inline code documentation, a different distribution of phase effort activity, and a different growth profile in terms of lines of code developed. The major goals of the study were to: (1) assess the process used in the SEL cleanroom model with respect to team structure, team activities, and effort distribution; (2) analyze the products of the SEL cleanroom model and determine the impact on measures of interest, including reliability, productivity, overall life-cycle cost, and software quality; and (3) analyze the residual products in the application of the SEL cleanroom model, such as fault distribution, error characteristics, system growth, and computer usage.

The 27-28 October 1986 FIRE IFO cirrus case study - Cloud parameter fields derived from satellite data

A cirrus parameter retrieval methodology and the results of its application over the cirrus Intensive Field Observation (IFO) area using data from the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) taken during the FIRE cirrus case study days, October 27-28, 1986. An impirical cloud bidirectional reflectance model derived from another IFO analysis was combined with a theoretical ice crystal cloud albedo model to estimate visible cloud optical thickness, which was used to derive the cloud infrared emittance. Cloud altitude was adjusted based on the derived emittance and observed temperatures. The approach developed here produced a very reasonable picture of cirrus cloud fields. It was estimated that the cloud-top and cloud-center heights are derived with a precision of about 0.6 km, except in very broken cloud conditions. Cirrus cloud thicknesses were also estimated and it is found that the derived results are comparable to other case study observations.

Structural control sensors for CASES

The Remote Attitude Measurement Sensor (RAMS) is currently baselined to meet two important sensor needs for CASES (Control, Astrophysics and Structures Experiment in Space). First, as a tip displacement sensor, RAMS is designed to provide accurate knowledge of the position and orientation of the boom tip assembly. Secondly, as a boom motion tracker, it is designed to monitor 43 reflective targets which are distributed along the length of the boom and provide displacment information for post facto processing. The design and operation of RAMS as these two types of sesnors are described, and attention is given to how RAMS interfaces with the CASES closed-loop control system and how systems identification is accommodated.

On the theory of the synthesis of offset dual-shaped reflectors - Case examples

In an earlier paper by Galindo-Israel et al. (1987), the geometrical optics (GO) principles, constraints, and requirements of the dual- and single-offset-shaped reflector synthesis problem were collected and developed into a set of nonlinear first-order PDEs. An extension of the methods by which solutions to the PDEs can be obtained is presented, together with several case examples. These examples are independently analyzed by GO and physical optics diffraction methods. The starting point for the integration over each reflector can be taken on the outer rim, at the center, or at an intermediate point-the intermediate starting point being the more general case. The utility of the speed of this synthesis method is demonstrated. For example, the program utilized completes a synthesis in less than 45 s on a 386/20 personal computer and within a fraction of a second on a mainframe Cray. This makes practical the incorporation of the synthesis into a search algorithm that can optimize one or more parameters of the reflector system. As an example, the optimization of the mapping equations for low cross polarization is discussed.
