Revising Apetrei’s bounding volume hierarchy construction algorithm to allow stackless traversal

Stackless traversal is a technique to speed up range queries by avoiding usage of a stack during the tree traversal. One way to achieve that is to transform a given binary tree to store a left child and a skip-connection (also called an escape index). In general, this operation requires an additional tree traversal during the tree construction. For some tree structures, however, it is possible to achieve the same result at a reduced cost. We propose one such algorithm for a GPU hierarchy construction algorithm proposed by Karras in Karras 2012. Furthermore, we show that our algorithm also works with the improved algorithm proposed by Apetrei in Apetrei 2014, despite a different ordering of the internal nodes. We achieve that by modifying Apetrei’s algorithm to restore the original Karras’ ordering of the internal nodes. Using the modified algorithm, we show how to construct a hierarchy suitable for a stackless traversal in a single bottom-up pass.

Progress Toward the First Search for Bound Neutron Oscillation into Antineutron in a Liquid Argon TPC

This note presents current progress for a neutron-antineutron oscillation ($n–\overline{n}$) search in MicroBooNE paving the way for the first search analysis of such process in a Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC). Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Boosted Decision Tree (BDT) algorithms were used to select signal $n–\overline{n}$ events over cosmogenic backgrounds. The CNN-only, BDT-only, and the combined (CNN+BDT) methods were demonstrated on the Monte-Carlo signal and background events. Validation of the CNNonly and the BDT-only methods was carried out on a small dataset of MicroBooNE Run1 off-beam data, setting the starting point toward further improvement of the analysis.

M + (M=Ca, Ba) Cations Bound to Molecular Cavities: A New Strategy for Incorporating Molecular Quantum States into Quantum Information

This project pursued a novel strategy for incorporating multiple qubits per ion into ion-trap based quantum computing (ITQC) involving Ca + and Ba + . By forming molecular complexes of these cations with molecular-scale cages, we hypothesized that molecular energy levels could be incorporated into quantum computing while retaining key properties of the atomic ions intact. We experimented with a variety of molecular cages and found that Na + , K + , Rb + , Ca 2+ , Sr 2+ , and Ba 2+ could be captured and brought into the gas phase efficiently by imbedding them inside [2.2.2]-benzocryptand. IR and UV spectra of these cage complexes are sensitive to the size and charge state of the ion, reporting on the structures and binding properties of the cage complexes. UV photofragmentation of the Ba 2+ -Acetate -1 -BzCrypt complex produces Ba + -BzCrypt, the complex targeted for exploration in the original hypothesis. Follow-on funding is needed to pursue the spectroscopy of this complex as a target for ITQC.

Real-time Object Bounding in LiDAR Data With Computer Vision

The Multimodal Measurement System is a roadside radiation measurement testbed used to detect radiation sources in passing vehicles. It works by combining sensor signals from various modalities to produce a thorough scan of the source. A LiDAR sensor is used to measure the dimensions of the vehicle and provide a velocity estimate. However, the current LiDAR setup uses propriety software for which the source code is unavailable and cannot be updated to improve performance. Therefore, it is imperative to the accuracy of the analysis to create a custom vehicle detection that can return the dimensions and velocity of passing vehicles in real time. This new custom detection is written in C++ using the PointCloud Library, which keeps it lightweight. It also utilizes Docker and the Robot Operating System, which allows the versatility of running both on a small computer or the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory cluster while utilizing different models of LiDAR sensors. The custom detection outperforms the current detection model, which increases the accuracy of radiation source detection.
